The energy around this is DIFFERENT right now…

The energy in San Antonio is different right now. After ending the preseason undefeated, every single Spurs is clicking in the way that every fan wanted to see highlighted by Wemby, Stefan Castle, Luke Cornette. But the big point is that it’s so much more down to even the bench guys like Carter Bryant and even the two-way deals. We got so much to touch on because the energy in San Antonio, it’s real. It feels different. This season feels like the season that the Spurs prove all the doubters wrong. And again, the 5-0 performance in this preseason just cements that, right? And look, I know preseason is preseason. It doesn’t mean that this is going to turn into an 82 and0 season. I don’t think anyone’s pretending that it will, but that’s not the point of the preseason. The point of the preseason, yes, obviously you want to win, but you want to see your players step up in the ways that you want them to step up, right? We wanted to see Carter Bryant play some great defense and look to be a role player. He did exactly that. But it was this tweet here by the Spurs way that really summarized this for me. Right. WBY looks spectacular. We’re going to get into him a little bit more because this guy again it is real with him right now. We’re going to touch a lot on Victor Wanyama. Don’t don’t you worry. But Vel looks ready. Kell looks confident. Cornet looks sturdy. Barnes looks consistent. Champenny looks dependable. Castle looks eruptive. Harper looks smooth. Fox is coming. So coming is coming 5 and0 preeason. trying to speed that up at the end there because you don’t want to listen to me read this stuff all day. But it’s so true, right? And you know, knowing what the Spurs were capable of this whole preseason, we we we had our expectations, right? We were like hoping We WY looked comfortable. Again, more than that, Castle looking explosive was something that we were really looking forward to again after that bruised knee. But you can see here throwing the lob, he even hit some threes. This alleyoop here and of course his massive jam right here that everyone was talking about. Everyone looks in the way that we wanted them to look. Castle in particular, I want to start just for a moment on him. Again, 15 points, four and four last year, rookie of the year winner, but his three-point shot is coming along pretty well. He’s practicing a lot on that. And despite the mild knee injury, he looks incredibly explosive. But his passing also looks really good. And again, with Fox out to start the season, Dylan Harper might take that starting role. But I don’t know, Stefan Castle very well could be that starting one on opening night. So, so many good things here. But I want to touch on some other guys, right? Before we get into Wemby and the big guys here, I want to start with some bench guys. And I saw this tweet from Spurs reporter and I tended to agree with it, right? So, first off, again, we do have a lot of like two-way deals. We got like Adam Flaggler who had a pretty good preseason. David Jones Garcia. I still love this tweet here. Dribbling. Look at Kyrie shooting Curry finishing out mid-range CB3 defense kawaii. David Jones Garcia if you want all of it. But these two-way guys really had a chance to show out this preseason. And to me, that was one of the more interesting storylines of this whole preseason for San Antonio. Is not just the Stars doing what we wanted them to do. It’s the bench guys, the guys that are fighting for their NBA lives coming out there and proving that the Spurs have made some great scouting decisions all the way down. And Michael Potter was a guy that I did want to highlight here because he plays bigger than he looks. I think he’s like 69, 610, but he is a great shooter. His fundamentals are unbelievable. and he feels like the kind of guy that, you know, will probably play most of the year with Austin, but can absolutely slide into the Spurs lineup depending on how the shooting struggles are. Like again, I always say this, no matter what sport, if there’s a niche that needs to be filled on a team and you have that specific skill set, there could be two, three, four guys that are objectively better players than you ahead of you. But if you fill that need for a team, you’re jumping up that list of who is up next. And Micah Potter could be that guy. Am I anticipating him playing a ton in the NBA? No. But he’s a high IQ big bait, can play physical D. I tend to agree with what Spurs reporter said here. Reliably hit open threes, get rebounds, keep defenses honest by helping create spacing in the half court. So, you know, I at the full NBA level, I don’t anticipate him being like a massive difference maker really ever. But it’s these kind of guys, him, David Jones Garcia, Adam Flagler, and so many more guys, Riley Min, right? like that are just showing the Spurs do have that next man up kind of mentality and these guys are ready and that’s what helps this team’s depth so much and a team that will have some injury troubles throughout the season. There’s no doubt, right? You could, it’s rare that your full team gets through unscathed. Of course, Sohan and Fox both out to start the season, at least the season opener with injuries. So, there’s a lot of guys who could very well step up. Carter Bryant being another guy. But really, what we want to talk about is kind of the the big names. And before we do get to Webby, I want to chat about Luke Cornet. Let me make sure I have the uh the picture. Here it is. So, Webby fan was posting on the Spurs subreddit, which is a great play place for Spurs discussion. Of course, Luke Hornet’s preseason averages 137-2 with a block on 79% shooting and 85% from the line in 18 minutes a game. And yes, one of them was against the the Guangjo uh Long Lions, but still Luke Cornet showed up every single night this preseason. And what did we want to see from Luke Cornette? We wanted to see some rim protection and we wanted to see him slashing off ball because apparently he was really good at that. Like that was one of the things that we saw on those stack cards, those advanced analytic stat cards. Yeah, he was good at that. And even so, we’re going to play the highlights again here. Yeah, there’s a Webby lob, but there’s a Cornet lob in here as well. The offball slashing, the ability to get into the right spot on the offensive end was uncanny for Luke Cornet. Now, look at this right here. Nice little roll, nice little one-handed jam off the dish from Dylan Harper. And he showed up more than I think anyone really would have expected. We knew what we were getting in him as like a decent backup from Boston when we signed him to that four-year deal. but to come in and look perfect as not only Wemb’s backup, but a guy that could very well run a two big uh lineup with Wemby sort of Twin Towers 2.0 thing. French vanilla out there in the front court, which Luke Cornet approves of by the way. So, quite like that. Right now, he has shown up huge. And again, not just him, not just the bench guys, but everyone. Like I said here, Webby Vel Kelvin shot so well from the field. I want to go into this here. This is from Uncle Freddy on the Spurs subreddit cuz I want to just highlight this as well because it gives that extra bit of credence to why the energy is right now different in San Antonio. Because again, like I said, it’s not just about the individual performances. The preseason’s about how the guys work together, how the team chemistry looked, and how that will contribute to winning in the regular season. Mind you, this is also with only a couple of games of not 100% Dylan Harper, couple of games of theoretically not 100% Stfan Castle, and no D’Arren Fox, no Jeremy Sohan. Let’s get back into it. WBY, of course, we’ll get to him in just a moment, but Kell shot 70% from the field. Julian Champeni shot 63% from three. Luke Cornet 79.3% from the field. These guys stepped up. Kell Johnson is looking like the Kell Johnson that I think we all really wanted to see, right? Kell Johnson that comes off the bench is a spark plug. He is a efficient. He’s knocking down some threes, but he’s getting to the rim very well and his finishing looks great. Julian Champeni if he can be a reliable shooter that is huge for this team. But of course the big thing here is Webinyama 17 8.8 and four with one steal, two blocks and 6650 88 shooting in 20 minutes. Those per 36 minutes are something like 30 points, 15 rebounds and like I don’t know like almost 10 assists. It was something ridiculous if you do the math. But those 24 11 4 and four numbers from last year like that’s not far off of what he averaged in the preseason. Yes, it is a bit far off, but again, 20 minutes per game and he played 33 minutes last year. If you just extrapolate to 33 minutes, which is again what he played last year before going down going down with the injury. Hold on, let me quickly do that math just so I’m not wrong here. So, it’s 27 12 points, 14 12 boards, 6 and 12 assists, and over three blocks per 33 minutes. Again, the per 36 are better, but that’s just considering his minutes per game from last year. And again, watching these highlights, the lobs, there’s so much here that I didn’t even include, too. Including his footwork where he’s clearly like the work with Hakee is paying off so well, but the explosiveness of Castle Harper having Cornet right there on the lob. The chemistry is unbelievable. Carter Bryant with the block getting the bucket on the other end. But it’s Wemi again at the center of all of this. These lobs, these threes that he’s taking in transition. And what’s crazy to me is that it’s almost already you’re like I’m getting desensitized like every game when he’s out there getting a couple lobs. Some insane footwork where he caught it almost at the three-point line like in the short quarter, pump faked. He gathered his dribble, pump fake, got him in the air, he stepped through and with one step from like the short corner got a easy layup. I don’t even know how that’s like if you try to do that on the basketball court, you’ll probably, I don’t know, sprain your ankle or something. It’s ridiculous. The idea that he can do what he’s doing is is insane. And I feel like I’m already kind of getting used to it, which is nuts, but at the same time, I feel like I’ll never get used to it. I mean, this guy’s truly an alien, right? By the way, you want this sweater because I love this sweater. I wear it a lot. Die Hard Addicts. Link in the description. They got us with all this amazing merch. But right now, like I said, the energy feels different in San Antonio for various reasons. The players are clicking on another level. Webby is doing what we wanted him to do. Vel looks ready. Castle is explosive in more ways than one that Bruis knees certainly not show. We have John at home. We have Luke Cornet, the backup big, who we just signed. We have some amazing play from the rookie Carter Bryant. We have the G-League level guys showing up, showing that we have that next man up thing. It’s real. It’s real this time for San Antonio. And I’m just going to end this off by saying I think we’re really going to outperform this 42 and 40 projection. The Western Conference is a blood bath, but look, Bleacher Report, like I don’t know. I feel this energy. I feel it’s different and I feel like we’re going to be better. Thank you for watching.
