Ben Simmons, the 29-year-old ex allstar, is still a free agent. The guy is a 6′ 10 in point forward who was the number one overall draft pick. Remember last season, Simmons split time between the Brooklyn Nets and the LA Clippers. He secured a buyout deal with the Nets, pocketing a hefty $124 million for just 90 healthy games and then joined the Clippers to try to get back to the playoffs after years stuck in lottery limbo. But there he felt the pressure of the rotation and played in only five of seven postseason games in limited minutes under Tailoo’s command. His averages were low. 0.8 points on 33.3% shooting, 1.4 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.8 blocks in 8.4 minutes per game. As a Clippers reserve, he put up 2.9 points on 43.4% field goal shooting and 85.7% from the free throw line, plus 3.8 8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 0.7 steals in 16.4 minutes. Sure, the back and foot surgeries along with some mental health struggles after that contract hold out with the Philadelphia 76ers in 2021 to22 have changed his potential. He’s not the superstar he once was, and his three-point shooting is awful, just 13.9% for his career. His free throw shooting 50% overall. But Paceek thinks the Celtics along with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons could benefit from a versatile player like him. Picture Simmons as a switchable defender, former alldefensive team member, giving coach Joe Misella some options. He can play as a ball handling point guard or as a small ball center. He’d be a cheap depth piece to help with the guard rotation alongside Derek White, Payton Pritchard, the 2025 sixth man of the year, and the new addition Anthony Simons. He’s not going to raise the team ceiling, but he could keep us afloat until Tatum returns later in the season. The focus would be on what he does beyond scoring, defense, rebounds, assists.
