This Changes EVERYTHING We Thought About the Sixers…
We are just days away from the Philadelphia 76ers season officially getting underway and it appears the vibes have shifted quite a bit in the building. Multiple Sixers are praising Tyrese Maxi for his growth in leadership and it seems to be a spirit within this team that was never found last year. I do want to highlight exactly what is being said and why I do think this may matter in an onc court context once these games begin to get played. So let’s dive right into things here. And I do want to start off with this headline from the article from Kai Carlin of Sixers Wire here as he writes, “Multiple Sixers single out Tyrese Maxi for being vocal in practice.” Now, let’s not forget that this is the same Tyrese Maxi who not only coined the phrase 1% better every day, who not only has turned himself from a dude, a small guard with questionable shooting coming out of Kentucky to a clear-cut NBA all-star in the span of five seasons. But this is a guy who stood 10 toes down at the podium at media day saying, “I want to set the standard for this Sixers team.” statement to give his exact quote and give him his due credit here that Maxi said quote I think the biggest thing that I’m trying to accomplish is we need a standard like this is who we are no matter every single day no matter who plays no matter who doesn’t play when you see the Philadelphia 76ers this is what you see you’re going to see that team every single night every single time that you turn on the turn the TV on every single time you step foot in whatever re arena we’re playing in this is the team that you’re going to get and I think this is a very honorable goal that he is setting and he’s the right guy to try and achieve it here. That it was all over the map last season. We didn’t know who was on the Sixers roster on a nightight basis. Is Joel Embiid playing? Is Paul George playing? Who is this guy we just called up from the G-League? Who is OSHA Brassette? Who does he bring to this Sixers team? It was a nightmare last year and having a standard like that is something that the Sixers should absolutely be aspiring to achieve. Now, the latest quotes on what we have regarding Maxi’s leadership. I first want to start off with this from Andre Drummond here once again from from Kai Carlin’s article and it writes he’s been good at it Andre Drummond Tyrese is a natural quiet leader I think this year he’s taking on well starting from last year he’s taking on the role of being more vocal and this year it’s been intensified by a lot more so it’s really cool to see his growth in that play in the in that piece of his game. Anybody can be a leader on any team. However, it means more coming from one of the team’s best players. The Sixers have been pushing Maxi to be the voice of this team to make sure everybody is on the right page and get the most out of his teammates. It falls to him. Quote, I mean, he’s the franchise player or one of the franchise player. The franchise player. I’ll correct myself. Drummond finished. We got to hear his voice. I told him that first day I came back last year. Like, you’re the guy. So, we need to hear from you. You can play hard and we can follow your lead that way, but we got to hear your voice, too. And I think he’s really taken that role on very well. Now, to this point about leadership and being the best player, I do disagree with the notion that the best player needs to be the leader of a team, but it certainly works better when it does function that way. That it makes life easier as far as like if you’re saying things, if you’re talking the talk but not walking the walk, it does not carry as much weight in another person’s opinion here that it is not going to translate to teammates if you’re not backing up what you say. Tyrese Maxi is a guy who has backed it up far before he’s even said it. This was a skittish young kid that came in a league who just put the work in as hard as he possibly can and the results are speaking for themselves. He has the grounds to be able to give others a kick in the butt if they’re not doing their thing, if they’re not working hard, if they’re not bought in. And I love that he is taking that so personally and so intentionally here. Now, to continue on with the article and get another opinion here, this coming from veteran Eric Gordon here that he said, quote, “He’s been speaking up more.” Eric Gordon said at practice on Thursday, quote, “I mean, I encourage him to speak up. I mean even more and more because he has a great personality where he always means well he’s very encouraging he should speak up even more so it’s been time for him to be a leader I would say a little bit pointed here and I would say you know kind of encouraging guy it is interesting Eric Gordon is a guy who’s just hung around and I I do think it was worth noting Joel Embiid repping the Eric Gordon uh jersey at practice the other day have no idea what that was about nor did Eric Gordon when he was asked about it there but it is good that all these guys are getting along and on the right page and there does feel to be like a level camaraderie and connectiveness that I simply did not expect for a team coming off the season that they did last year. I mean, we got this update today looking at the uh the popcorn. Shout out to Harrison Graham that it appears Adam Dembona didn’t fulfill his ongoing rookie duties. As he tweets, it appears that Dembona didn’t fulfill his ongoing rookie duties which resulted in his tire being removed and popcorn filled in his car. Vibes seem great with this Sixers team. And the video in itself was quite funny there. You got a little view of Andre Drummond and Kelly Ubé punch munching some popcorn right out of the car there. Joel Emvida was cracking up when he was shown and a Dem Bona looking not pleased whatsoever. This is one of those good good naturatured pranks that I think is like this is how the NBA is supposed to work and I get that Bona no longer officially a rookie. Do want to know the details of what exactly he fell short on there. And we also see video clips like these guys playing around in the hot tub. Janai Broom diving in there is the whole team was cheering on as he was doing updowns here. All this being broadcast on Andre Jones Drummond’s Instagram story there. There does feel a connectiveness, a locker room sense in a way that I felt was absent last year with this Sixers team with so many bodies coming in and out of this organization with no new no real feel of who is the team at this point is what last year felt like. It does feel like there’s a conscious effort being made to change that. Now granted, all of this is empty weight if it does not translate to the court. there is not an improved level of play from the team as a whole. But I do admire and appreciate the efforts that are being taken to get to this level here that Tyrese Maxi being intentional in his approach as a leader being more forward- facing member of this organization. This man was coined the franchise for a reason and he is filling those shoes at a very rapid rate. Now, to mention Maxi specifically here, I did have one who pull up uh his exact stats here that last season averaging 37.7 points per game or 37.7 minutes per game, excuse me. 26.3 points, 6.1 assists, 3.3 rebound shot, 43.7% from the field, 33.7% from beyond the three-point arc. It’s going to be very interesting to see what exactly his role looks like on this Sixers team. We know who Maxi is as a basketball player. But I am curious if there’s a little bit more of an effort to play him off ball to an extent more. Is it put the ball in Jared McCain’s hand? Allow Quinn Grimes to bring it up once in a while. VJ Edgecom has said he looks at himself as a gu as a point guard in the long-term future and it’s going to take some strides to get there. It’s going to be really interesting to see how they all fit together. But for Maxi directly, that that three-point percentage is something that I’m going to have my eye on this year because on one hand, this is a guy who had a rep as a struggling shooter coming out of college that he shot sub 30% not just in college, but in his rookie season in the NBA. Then flash forward not too long and all of a sudden he’s a top five shooter in back-to-back seasons at the NBA level there by 30 point percentage. That is a ridiculous level of growth. But what we’ve seen over these past really two seasons is when the volume has increased, the production has not exactly matched. Now, the simple math of that is because you’re shooting it more and you’re not getting as clean of looks. That in those like third, second, and third seasons where he was able to just basically post up in the corner and shoot threes and was not utilized in the offense to the fullest extent that his talent level commanded there. Those were always highle looks and he managed to deliver and that’s why the stats do say do show the way that they are. I am curious if we get a little bit of a return to that form of Tyrese Maxi there from an efficiency standpoint that we know the shot is still in there. He didn’t lose it overnight and he certainly is still putting the the work in to improve his game and add layers there. But I would like to see a little bit of growth in there that let’s at least get in the 38% range. Tyrese Maxi is 100% capable of that. That’s something I am going to keep my eye on this year. But nonetheless, shout out to Tyrese Maxi for really taking these steps and working actively to improve this Sixers team that it is one thing to talk the talk to stand up there at media day and talk about how you want to set a standard. It’s a whole another thing to actually put that into effect. And it does seem that that is exactly what he’s doing with this Sixers team. So, shout out to Tyrese Maxi for getting the job done there. I love that there is a little bit of spirit and good vibes about the Sixers team. And who knows what happens if that begins to deteriorate if there are a couple losses here and there, but it’s nice that that’s the starting point for this year. It feel like we never even reached this last year for the Sixers team that it was disaster before the train even got off the tracks there. At least in some regard, we’re starting in a good spot this year and that starts with all these guys being bought in. So, we’ll see what ultimately happens, but did want to highlight a little bit of that leadership growth that is being shown for Tyrese Maxi. camaraderie within the Sixersh locker room here and we’ll see if it translates on the court starting Wednesday against the Boston Celtics. So, I appreciate you guys for tuning in this video here. We are just a couple days away from the Sixers season beginning and cannot wait for that to be the case. So, make sure you guys are tapped in. This team is going to be fun to watch
Who can see 👀 Grimes the key, if Sixers is HEALTHY? 🤔 ..his scoring off bench
How is that possible that Drummond Scored 7 points and 4 rebs within 10mins. If he had played 20 mins he would have easily had a Double-Double. Fire up the 🥁 he's back.
I think Andre Drummond may be the Philadelphia Seventy Sixers version of Udonis Haslem. Glad to see him being the big brother to Tyrese Maxey. Go Sixers ❤️💙❤️💙
1 percent better everyday actually comes from either Jalen hurts or sirianni
Apparently in the eyes of NBA players, you are technically a rookie until you touch a second year, regular season game floor. Not sure if this means until the sub you in, or until a game you are rostered for starts, but apparently you are subject to "rookie rules" until that point.
I forget which NBA player said this, but I'm pretty sure it was on teagues podcast, and it was in reference to Bona.
