How good are Matthew Stafford and the Rams? | The NFL Today

GEICO FORMER TEAMMATE OF MINE, J.T. IS THE BEST. >> MWE KEEP TALKING ABOUT PATRICK MAHOMES. SAY WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY, HE DIDN’T HAVE HIS NUMBER ONE RECEIVER TODAY. YES, HIS NUMBERS WERE DOWN, BUT HE DOESN’T MAKE MISTAKES. IT DOESN’T TURN A FOOTBALL OVER. HE UNDERSTANDS MOMENTS IN THE GAME WHERE WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO. FOUR TOUCHDOWN PASS US TODAY. >> FIVE. HIS ARM STRENGTH. YOU TALK ABOUT HUGGING THE CEILING, A GREAT REFERENCE. I NEVER EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT THAT BUT SUCH A GREAT — >> GREAT VISUAL. >> THE VISUAL IS LIKE THE CEILING FOR ONE LEVEL IS HERE, THE CEILING FOR ANOTHER LEVEL IS HERE, SO WHAT YOU’RE TRYING TO DO IS REACH THE CEILING FOR THE LEVEL THAT YOU’RE TRYING TO THROW IT TO AND I’VE SEEN MATTHEW STAFFORD JUST HUGGING OVER THE GUY RUSHING. FOR THE GUYS DOWN THE FIELD 40 YARDS. HE’S GOING TO BE ABLE TO PUT IT IN THE BUCKET. A GREAT REFERENCE RIGHT THERE. THIS GUY MATTHEW STAFFORD, I’LL TELL YOU. YOU TALK ABOUT AN MVP, TALK ABOUT PATRICK MAHOMES. >> WHEN NATE CAME ON BOARD HE STARTED TALKING ABOUT MATTHEW STAFFORD. I WATCHED HIM A LOT MORE CLOSELY. YOU ARE ONE OF THE BEST TEACHERS AROUND, WHAT IS IT THAT STAFFORD DOES SO WELL? >> ONE, IS A FOOTBALL PLAYER. AND WHAT I MEAN BY THAT — I WOULD BE THE HEIGHT GUY ON MY TEAM AND I REMEMBER OCCASIONALLY HE WOULD TOO. HE WOULD COME UP TO ME LIKE I DON’T KNOW HOW YOU DO IT, YOU ALWAYS GET IN FRONT OF THE TEAM AND JUST TALK SO CONFIDENTLY. AND I’M LIKE YOU DO TOO, YOU DO A GREAT JOB HE’S LIKE YEAH, BUT I GET NERVOUS. I CAN’T TELL. HE SAID I IMAGINE MYSELF IN A HELMET BECAUSE THAT THE ONLY PLACE UNCOMFORTABLE. EVERY FIVE PLAYS, THIS IS A QUARTERBACK WHO SAYS ONLY PLACE UNCOMFORTABLE IS INSIDE MY HELMET. THAT JUST MEANS HE LOVES FOOTBALL. THAT’S JUST HIS PERSONALITY AND HOW MUCH HE LOVED THE GAME. WHEN IT COMES TO TALENT, HE WAS BLESSED TREMENDOUSLY. A ROCKET FOR AN ARM AND OVER THE COURSE OF HIS CAREER WITH TIME, COACHING, EXPERIENCE, SOME UPS AND DOWNS, THE HARD TIMES IN DETROIT, HE’S LEARNED HOW TO BECOME A BETTER VERSION OF HIMSELF. EACH YEAR HE HAS IMPROVED AND EVEN WITH THE AGENT SALT AND PEPPER IN. I BELIEVE THIS IS THE BEST VERSION OF MATT STAFFORD WE HAVE EVER SEEN. IS GETTING BETTER WITH AGE LIKE FINE WINE. SO NOW YOU ADD THAT WITH PUKA NACUA. HE WILL COME BACK HEALTHY. ADAMS IS FINALLY COMFORTABLE WITHIN THIS OFFENSE. YOU HAVE A HOST OF PLAYMAKERS THAT ARE SURROUNDING THOSE TWO GUYS AND THEN SEAN McVAY. NOT TO MENTION THE DEFENSE THAT IS ALSO STEPPING UP. I JUST FEEL LIKE THIS IS ONE OF THOSE SQUADS THAT IF YOU’RE ATTENTION TO THEM NOW, THEY WILL START PUNCHING PEOPLE IN THE FACE IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER AND CATCH PEOPLE OFF GUARD. AARON DONALD, I SEE YOU ARE STILL WORKING OUT. WANT TO GO GET ANOTHER RING… >> TO ME PROBABLY ANOTHER GUY FROM DETROIT, HE WAS A POWER PITCHER EARLY ON LEARNED TO LOCATE AND ISN’T ALWAYS GOING FASTBALL. HE HAS THE FASTBALL, IS THAT TREMENDOUS ARM STRENGTH. BUT IT ONLY COMES OUT ON OCCASION. MOST OF THE TIME LITTLE TOUCH PASSES HERE AND THERE, FINDING THE RIGHT WINDOWS OR CHANGING ARM ANGLES. SLEPT ON, HIS ABILITY TO MOVE. WE DON’T THINK OF MATTHEW STAFFORD AS A MOVEMENT TYPE GUY BUT EXTENDS PLAYS REALLY WELL. HE THROWS OFF THE RUN REALLY, REALLY WELL. BOTH TO THE RIGHT AND TO THE LEFT. AND I THINK THAT ALLOWS SEAN McVAY TO OPEN UP THE PLAYBOOK IN DIFFERENT WAYS AND HIS ABILITY TO PUSH THE BALL VERTICAL ON THE RUN, PUSH THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD, I THINK IS ONE OF THE THINGS I LOOK AT AND I GO THAT’S REALLY IMPRESSIVE, TO BE ABLE TO GO TO THE LEFT, DRIVE THAT WILL BALL DOWN THE FIELD. IT OPENS UP THE FIELD AND IT OPENS UP SEAN McVAY’S PLAYBOOK TO BE ABLE TO ATTACK YOU IN THE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT WAYS.

  1. I'm a 49ers fan and I don't like the Rams, but i give credit when credit is due. Matthew Stafford performance today should put him as an MVP candidate

  2. McVay is finally starting to implement his coveted 12 personnel packages that he's been TRYING to do since he got to LA, he finally has the TE's to do it. He was waiting for their rookie, Ferguson to catch up to the playbook and today we got a HUGE glimpse into what the rest of this season is going to look like. Jacksonville was caught off guard, they've never played against that before and Cohen probably had NO idea it was coming and had NO answer for it after he spotted it. The Rams looked clean and tight today, a complete team on both sides of the ball.
    Watch out, they're coming.

  3. More impressive than Stafford's yardage total so far this season is his TD-to-INT ratio: that definitely shows maturation, even at this stage of his career, as a QB.

  4. Stafford has had the rams in place to be 7-0 today if it wasn’t for a special team blunder and a typical Kyren fumble…

    17 tds – 2ints and almost 2k yards…

He should 1000% be in the mvp convo

  5. Stafford is a good quarterback and the fact he is 38 or 39 he is a veteran knows how to play the game but I give that rams defense alot of the credit .but I like Baker Mayfield to be front runner for MVP .or Daniel Jones

  6. Matt Ryan's analysis of Stafford's game is SUPER on point. Stafford's mobility has always been underrated.

The only other thing I'll add, is Stafford's ability to ambush you. You don't want to face Stafford in a two minute drill. He will tear you apart. He'll have his offense 40 yards down the field in 3 plays or less. There's a reason he's got 50 game-winning drives.

  7. It’s going to get even scarier when puka is back 😎… so many people stepped up and showed they can make it happen! 👏🏾 RAMS 🔵🟡🔵🟡

  8. I swear he is consistently underrated. And of course he won’t get peoples attention until he throws 5 tds. What he does on a weekly basis is ridiculous and people don’t realize it.

  9. It's so strange to see Stafford getting his proper. He's always been elite. He was just loyal to a terrible franchise for most of his career. And I've always said he's mobile, people are just blind to it.
