I’ve been talking to some sources and the feeling inside and outside of Wrigley is clear. The 2025 2026 off season will be defined by how the front office led by Jed Hoyer pivots from its perceived losses and attacks its obvious weaknesses. The first major domino and this is something we are monitoring closely is what happens with Kyle Tucker. What I am hearing and the TJ French article we’ll be breaking down confirms this direction is that a Tucker return is not expected at this time. That’s a blow. There is no way to sugarcoat it. Losing a bat of that caliber leaves a significant hole in offensive production. However, this front office’s focus is never on one single piece. It’s about resource allocation. If the let’s say 30 $35 million 8AV that would have gone to Tucker is now off the table, the immediate question for Hoyer is how is that money reinvested to build a deeper, more sustainable playoff team? The answer, and this is where it gets interesting, appears to be leaning heavily toward the mound. The 2025 rotation was a story of absolute extremes. On one hand, we were blessed with the emergence of Kate Horton. The kid is a budding star. Period. He exceeded every expectation and looks like a future anchor. Alongside him, Shota Imanaga continued to prove he is a frontline ace, a fierce competitor with elite stuff who plays at the top of any rotation. But after those two northsiders, you watched the games just like I did. We saw the depth problems. We saw the inconsistency at the back end and the downstream impact it had on our bullpen. By the time we hit the playoffs, that lack of a durable, reliable third or fourth starter hurt us. You cannot win in October with only two dominant starters. The front office knows this. They know that to compete with the Dodgers, the Braves, and yes, the Brewers, and Cardinals in our own division, starting pitching depth is non-negotiable. This is where the hottest name linked to the Cubs in the last 48 hours comes in. Dylan CE. Now, I know what some of you are thinking. CE had a seemingly average 2025 season with the Padres’s, but it’s my job to look past the surface numbers and that is what the Cubs front office is doing. Joel Reutder at Bleacher Report put out a very detailed contract prediction that has ceased landing as the ninth biggest free agent on the market. His projection 5 years $125 million. That’s a $25 million AAV. Let’s break that down. This contract would put him slightly below what Tyler Glasnau got 5 years 136.5 million after his trade to the Dodgers. The Glasno comparison is in my opinion perfect. Both are guys with electric Sai Young level stuff but who come with questions whether it’s command in CE’s case or injury history in Glasnos. Let’s look at CES’s 2025 numbers. Yes, the ERA was 455. It’s not pretty. But he made 32 starts, which signals durability, something we desperately lacked. And most importantly, 215 strikeouts in 168 innings. That is elite stuff that doesn’t happen by accident. What I’m hearing from datadriven people is that CE’s underlying numbers, his FIP fielding independent pitching, his XRA, expected ERA, suggest he was the victim of bad luck and some subpar defense in San Diego. His pitches still have an elite whiff rate. The Cubs under Carter Hawkins love this profile. A pitcher whose stuff is better than his surface level erra. They believe they can optimize guys like this. Cease, a Chicago area native, fits this mold perfectly. He would slot in as the clear number three, a high impact arm who on any given day can dominate a lineup and take the pressure off Horton and Imanaga. The $125 million question is whether this is a bet the Cubs are willing to make. Historically, as the article notes, the Cubs are not known for spending big. I disagree with that premise slightly. They do spend, but they spend intelligently. They paid for Swanson. They paid for Imanaga. The issue isn’t spending, it’s risk. 5 years for a volatile pitcher is a risk. However, the alternative is worse. The free agent pitching market is shallow after the top names. If you miss on cease, you are looking at far less inspiring options. What I’m hearing is that the San Diego Padres’s are understandably the favorites to resign him. They know what they have. This means if Jed Hoyer wants his man, he is going to have to enter a bidding war. This is where the presumed Tucker departure becomes so crucial. Freeing up that money allows the Cubs to enter that bidding war for cease without compromising their ability to fill other holes like the bullpen or perhaps a first base bat. The impact of adding cease is profound. It solidifies the one to three rotation pushes names like Jameson Tylon, Jordan Wixs or Ben Brown into depth roles or five or to the bullpen where they might be more effective. Suddenly a 2025 weakness becomes a 2026 strength. This is a contention window defining decision. If the Cubs are serious about winning now while Immanaga is in his prime and Horton is cheap, this is exactly the kind of aggressive calculated move they need to make. My final analysis is this. The pursuit of Dylan CE is the most logical and highest impact pivot the Cubs can make this off season, especially with the expectation that Kyle Tucker’s money is coming off the books. The $125 million price tag is the cost of doing business for elite stuff with proven durability. Even with an inflated 2025 ERA, it’s a bet on analytics over surface level results.
