The Check In – 10.13.25 – Jets at Islanders
Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] Hey, [Music] [Music] don’t [Music] Number [Music] one. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Check. Check. Check. Testing. Testing. One, two, one, two. Testing. Is this thing on? That gets you every time. Good. Good morning, everybody. Let’s get this on the rails already. We’re already off the rails. All right. It’s only 10:30 in the morning. This does not bode well for the rest of the day. Good morning everyone. Happy Thanksgiving Monday to you. I’m Sarah. He’s Jamie Thomas. You are joining us for the latest edition of Check-in as we get you set for game three. The Winnipeg Jets playing the New York Islanders today as they kick off this two-game road trip. It’s their first road game of the season. Yeah. And a lot of new faces on the roster. Obviously, Mike McIntyre was asking a lot of the players and the coaches about, you know, this is a great opportunity for the players to get together. But they’ve had a lot of team building events leading up to the regular season. Of course, there was the golf tournament, right? And then there was a there was a dinner um uh for everybody as well. So although this is great to have everybody out in the road, they’ve uh been building already and you can kind of see that already. And it’s great to see especially with all the new faces on the roster. Yes. Well, and that’s one of the things that we always talk about is yeah, getting out on the road how important it is for the group early. So it will be good for them. I think they’ll have a day off tomorrow. So, it’s a for only two games in a condensed schedule. Yeah, it really is a long road trip when when you think about it. They’re gone almost all um all this week. But anyways, it it’ll be good. But yeah, they I think this is a team that seems to be jelling off the ice um well, and we’re starting to see the signs on the ice as well. Yeah. And I mean, I don’t think there’s the one thing we’ve already addressed a lot over the last two years is the culture of the building, the family that they have, although there’s, you know, some key components missing uh from the roster already. Uh the new guys have filled in nicely and are starting to look more and more comfortable as we go along here. Well, it’s great to see so many of you in the chat already. Uh love to see it. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you as well. Great to be able to see you on uh Reeds. Good morning from Vegas. Yeah. Well, excellent. It’s an early It’s what? 8:30 in Vegas. Is it an hour before or two? If you’re up that early in Vegas, maybe maybe Reed hasn’t gone to sleep yet. Maybe she was right. I will try to not take shots at Jamie today. Not guaranteed though. He’s such an easy target. I mean, you’re not wrong. That is fair. You’re not wrong. That is 100% right. Uh let’s get you Let’s get all of you started though with the thoughts on facing this Islanders team. Yeah. I mean, they’re 0 and2 to start the year. Patrick Wah has, you know, been trying to get this team back to their glory days. Um, obviously they have great goalending. Elio Sroken will start in goal. That’s one position they’ve had under control recently. They have a fine young superstar that they drafted first overall this past June. He’s certainly a special kid and and a special player. We’ll get to him momentarily, but um, you know, it’s the Islanders are not one of the more exciting teams. you know, when you think of the upand cominging teams or the teams you want to watch, just is not they’re not on the top of their list. But that being said, they are hard out all the time whenever it comes to the Jets playing against them. And a lot of that is the system they play. They’re tight defensively. Uh they have great players, Matthew Barzal, um and Anthony Declair. So, and then of course we’ll get to Matthew Schaper here in a second, but uh it’s it’s never easy whenever the Jets go to um to pace the Islanders on the road uh for whatever for whatever reason, especially in this new arena that they have. So tough start to the road trip. Yeah, absolutely. But they they left Candle Life Center with a win and feeling uh better about their game, right? We know that they weren’t happy with the with the effort. Effort isn’t the right word, with the result in the in the season opener against Dallas, but they leave their twoame home stand with a 500 record, one and one on it. What do you think about the game against LA, which was an afternoon game? This is two afternoon games in a row for it’s throwing me off. It’s throwing all of us off, I think. Yeah, because it’s funny uh whenever you watch pregame or postgame interviews how players will still say tonight and they’ll forget it’s today, which you can totally understand because majority of their time is spent at night playing games. So, um it was a it was a typical Winnipeg Los Angeles game and I you know, Winnipeg came out like gang busters to start and then the the Kings took over the second period and you’re like, “Wow.” Yeah, because you really see how good LA was at that point because I thought Winnipeg was dominating. And in the third period, Winnipeg just does enough, namely the top line, Mark Shley, um doing a lot of the work to to get the win. But um never easy to beat the Los Angeles Kings, but full credit to Mark Shley. A tremendous performance. Game tying goal in the third period and then and the winner as well. Yeah, I mean that top line of Shley, Connor, and Valardi has scored five of the seven goals. Obviously Kyle Connor with the hattick in the first Mark Shaley with the two goals the last game and you mentioned LA it’s never easy to beat LA that the Kings were the one team last season that the Jets did not register a win against. So good to be able to check that box off already. Yeah, only play them three times, but again a very difficult team to play against. And you think of the Jets schedule to start off as you got Dallas who went to the Western Conference Final. You got LA who probably should have went to the Western Conference final as well, but Edmonton took care of that in the opening round after them getting out to a two nothing series lead. Um, let’s quickly go to the question of the day. We saw going up a little bit there across the bottom courtesy of our good friend Zach. U, we were going to ask you what you are thankful for in the Winnipeg Jets, but we did that last year. Yeah, mix it up. So, I like I like this one. Sarah came up with what is your game day superstition? And the reason why you said that because you were in the press box the other day and we had a couple superstitious people. We have many we have many superstitious co-workers but with this particular one know it was the season opener and game was very close and then all of a sudden we know that there was that quick stretch of three goals that the stars scored. So the person left my that I was standing with said Michelle remain nameless I cannot stand here anymore. I have to leave. Yeah. Right after they left what happened? Come back. He shorthanded goal. Yeah. Boom. Another short-handed goal. So, it became one of these ones going, I don’t think that we can stand together anymore during games. So, what is your superstition? Because we always hear players who don’t like to say they’re superstitious. Usually, they just like to say that they are routine oriented. Um, do you have a routine or a superstition that you like to go along whether or not it is setting up for the game or during the game? If you are, you know, there’s a great one. That’s a good one already, too. Here, hold on, I’ll throw it up. Sorry, Zach. This is the first check-in with Sarah and JT wearing pajama pants. If they win, my new superstition is all chickens will need to be hosted in pajamas. That’s a great one. I should have worn them. I almost wore sweats today. I was like, “Nobody’s going to be at the rink. I’ll be fine.” Just Someone asked me the other day when when I was at Sports Center if I ever wore sweatpants on this on the set. Yeah. But we had a glass top. Yeah. You couldn’t. No. But make no mistake, if it is not a glass desk, Yeah. most often people are wearing shorts or tights, sweats, whatever it may be. kind of Skittles and beer for every live hockey game. Really? Yeah. It’s not the beer, it’s Skittles. Not together, right? Not that you’re not having those together, I hope. Um, so let’s continue to hear them. Love to be able to hear. Actually, there was a great one until we were way up in the score that um Kylie Kelsey, Jason Kelsey’s wife, there was a video of her that she had turned around, I guess, while the Eagles, so she’s a diehard Eagles fan and had turned around in the stands and I guess the Eagles started playing well, so she couldn’t turn back and face the field for the rest of the game. Very superstitious. That’s a good one. Let us know what James, look at that. Any team I cheer for does terribly if I watch them play. Oh, James. James, is there like is there a study on this one? Is there like a record that you could put us up so uh you’re not watching today? We’ll let you know what happens later. I used to think growing up because I didn’t go to a ton of Jets 1.0 games, but when I did, they would always win. I obviously thought I was the Lucky Charm. So, I used to think that if the Jets gave me tickets, Yeah. then they would have great success. They could have gone 82 and 0. That’s that’s great. Yeah. I like this, too. Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Winnipegers from Chicago just here because my father moved us here in the early 90s and we stayed but it became worth it. But I’m glad you’re still cheering for the Jets and with a Central division rival. So, thank you for that. Yes. And happy Thanksgiving. Let’s go back though. Let’s talk a little bit more about the Kings game. Obviously, uh part of the news too is that they ended the game with only five defenseman. So, Hayden Flurry um injured in second period. Yeah. Blocking a shot. Yeah. Which they blocked a lot of um in that game. And there was certainly a story line for it. So Sunday he did not practice. The Jets did skate briefly before they flew out. This is what the projected lines for today look like based on practice yesterday because obviously with this being a 12:00 central start, 1:00 Eastern, there is no morning skate. So best we can do is go by what we saw yesterday. Um the the impact obviously on the blue line. And so based on what we saw with practice yesterday, Logan Stanley moves up beside Neil Pian and Colin Miller draws in beside Luke Sha and plays on his offside. So that a consistent question is how much do you enjoy playing that? It does is an advantage for one-timers obviously. Um being a right-handed shot, but uh so you know Colin’s been around the game long enough. He said he’s played a little bit. He even didn’t even remember if he did it last year, but he did I think I did it last year. That’s how quickly these guys erased. Yeah. Everything that’s happened before. uh as a veteran defenseman should he draw in today it it shouldn’t be a problem and um so that is your lineup. Um of course the change no changes up front with the forward group that you know you’re just talking about how the top line was doing so well. That’s because they’ve been together for so long. There’s still three lines that are meshing together as we speak because of a lack of familiarity and not playing together that much during the preseason. So I thought they looked a lot better and a little more cohesive in that game as they did opposed to the Dallas game. Yeah. Uh, so we said that Hayden Flurry blocked the shot. Blocked shots was certainly a theme late in the game in order for the Jets to be able to get the win. I mean, special teams played a big role, but block shots, uh, by that blue line. Certainly, they came up big. Yeah, they did. And it was like a crazy final two and a half minutes. And that’s what the first question to Logan Stanley was about yesterday. Long couple minutes. I felt like I was doing burpees in the crease, you know, getting up and down trying to take away the pass. But yeah, it was it was fun to be out there at the end of the game and, you know, try to contribute to uh to help the guys win. Yeah. At one point when you’re laying down, is part of you thinking, I’m not sure that I could even get up at this point or No, I was getting back up to be just laying there, but yeah, I was I was exhausted, legs were gassed, and I think they were too. I think LA’s guys were kind of hunched over in front a little bit, too. And uh it was a good battle and and uh fortunate we came out with two points. Creates kind of an even wilder scenario when you I think it was Neil that came out of the box, right? It was his penalty, but then he’s the freshest guy of everybody, but he’s kind of running around as a forward now, right? Cuz you’ve got 2D, so just Yeah, that’s why we go over the systems and and everyone’s got to know kind of what’s going on. And and Pete came flying out screaming. I don’t even know what he was screaming, but he was had some energy, so that obviously helped us out. And um you know, he did a good job. Absolutely. Yeah, it’s uh you know, I think I think obviously not our our cleanest game last night there, but uh the guys did a great job, you know, doing what doing what they had to to get it done. All right, we’re back. Paul Evans will be joining us here momentarily as he’s getting set up uh at UB UBS Arena. Sure. Okay. Yeah. Yeah. It’s been called UBC. You know, there’s if there’s one thing that sometimes I struggle with, it’s remembering what the names of all the arenas are because sometimes it’s why the staple center will always be the staple center to me and not crypto.com. There’s a lot of changes. I Minnesota has a new name to their ring, but we’ll get to that another time. It’s not important. Another a story for another day. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. Let’s save that one for the Minnesota game. Um, so Logan Stanley, great sense of humor. There’s also um remember there’s a big hit from Logan in the first period. Luke Shen had to fight uh Jeff Malot and uh it was funny because Logan told the story afterwards about how his dad actually went to Luke and thanked Luke for protecting his son. So he said Luke Shen big brothered me on that one. So he fought my fight for me. So that was a great conversation from uh with Logan Stanley yesterday after practice. Oh quite entertaining. Love to see people in the chat too say that the the appreciation for Stanley for blocking those shots. things that they like from him. I heard someone say that he took a shot off the back of the helmet, too, as well, blocking a pass, so did a little bit of everything. One of the players who mentioned that said, “Thank you, Phyllis. Logan Stanley did do good.” Um, so a busy man. Yeah, he’s not in a staircase. I’m a little disappointed. Well, it’s cuz we came It’s cuz we started the show too late. Yeah, good point. If we had done a 9:30 show, Yeah. He would have been in the stairs. He would have been the staircase. Yeah. So, he’s a good friend of the show. It is Paul Edmonds, uh, the voice of the Winnipeg Jets, joining us from the rather spacious radio booth at UBS Arena. Right, Paulie? Look at all I I sent a text to Mitch the other day like that. You know, that thing from uh Step Brothers, like so much room for activities. That’s how big that booth is. You know, it’s it’s uh thanks for having me on first and foremost and uh fun to be back on the road and and have the 41 games that are played here. But, you know, this is another one of those arenas that they you remember Union Dale JT. It was an old building that just oozed that history from all those great cups and and teams of the Islanders gone by. And and then they built this facility here after playing a couple years in Brooklyn. and the facility is great, but the the broadcast location at the old place was just awesome. Here we’re a little further back and you’re sort of toward the corner, but you do have a lot more space. And that was the one thing at at Unionale was um or Nassau County Coliseum was that you you were tight, but you were right on top of the action. And even though there would be sometimes only 11,000 people in the building to see an Islanders Jets game, uh you knew you were in midst uh in the midst of an atmosphere. And I wonder what this crowd is going to be like here today. The Islanders are off to an 0 and2 start, but you know, Matthew Schaefer should draw a few people in and Matt Barzel was back healthy again. So, the Jets will have their hands full today and we’ll see what kind of atmosphere there is in this building this afternoon. Can you You said you have more space there. What’s the vantage point like, Paul, for calling the game? Well, we’re right on the goal line actually and uh down to the right. So, you know, if you’re going left to right, then we’re down on the right hand side and right on the goal line. But, you know, you have a vantage point to see everything. So, you’re not impeded in any way. It’s just that you’re far back and you’re pretty high up. And that’s the way a lot of these buildings have have been built of late. Edmonton’s very similar. Edmonton used to have a a great vantage point for sure. Uh the new arena is real far back and real high. So, you just have to get used to it. I mean, I’ll tell you a funny sort of personal story. Uh, Edmonton last year drove me to the point where I said, I need to get my eyes checked and I need to upgrade my prescription on my glasses, which I did this off season. I did both. So, you know, it should be we should be good to go for for at least another year or 18 months, but at my advanced age, of course, I might be getting new prescription every 18 months to go along. So, every season and a half. Okay. Remember, uh, when the Oilers had those navy blue with the orange numbers in the back? Those were the worst. Oh, yeah. terrible. I mean, it was really hard to differentiate between, you know, what was an 89 and a 98 sometimes, right? Or if you had two numbers that were similar, uh, a 26 and a 28 sometimes would be difficult. So, uh, anyway, I digress. I mean, it’s it’s not really that big of a deal. It’s not that much of a hardship here. We’re in the National Hockey League calling hockey for a living. So, um, you know, just suck it up, Edmonds. I think she won’t say. Okay. Well, so let’s let’s go with the Jets themselves, Paul. Like two games in, there’s a bunch of new faces, there’s new lines, there’s new defense pairings. What have you made of how the Jets have started with all these new faces? Well, that’s the interesting part. I mean, when you if you include Nikita Chipperov, who I mean, got less than a cup of coffee last year with the team. I mean, he played some games, but there’s five forwards that weren’t full-time here last year on this team. So you’ve had to integrate those players and Jonathan Taves being one, Gus Nyquist another, Tanner Pearson, Cole Keepky and Nikita Chibov. So you think that yeah, your foundation is here and it is, but there’s five players on the forward core alone that have to get up to speed with who they’re playing with, how you play the systems so that you’re not thinking about the systems, you’re just reacting to how you’re supposed to roll them out. And that’s the difference. And once you start to get comfortable, there’s less thinking, just more action and more reaction. So, I think that everything is has gotten certainly better from game one to game two. We’ll see if that now allows them to take another step from game two to game three. But here’s the difference. I mean, did you feel they were a little nervous on Thursday? Did you feel they were a little out of sync at times? I guess so. You could make that argument on Thursday night certainly against Dallas, but I thought that they were way better on Saturday afternoon against the Los Angeles Kings. And part of that was the comfort level, the speed factor. They were they were better at battling. They were more competitive in terms of winning puck battles. So again, that’s that comfortability that we talk about where you can feel that everybody’s getting the chemistry that they want with playing with different guys and then certainly just getting getting level to how everybody wants you to play at at this at this particular stage of of where you are with a new organization. So the D pairings to talk about that for a minute. I love the Luke Shen Logan Stanley pairing. I mean, I talked to Logan Stanley today and he was talked to yesterday by uh the general media and there’s a bit of a Bash Brothers going on there. There’s a great mentorship and I think this will be great for Logan Stanley and maybe reinvigorates Luke Shin. Not that he needs a lot of that, but he’s playing with a young guy that reminds him of himself coming up. So, this could be a real good pairing. Like, uh Scott O’Neal said what he wants to see from that pairing is he doesn’t want to see or notice them. So, if they can go out and move the puck and and be physical and block shots like you’ve talked about, uh, JT and Sarah that last couple of minutes and Logan Stanley blocking shots off his or blocking passes off his helmet and and whatnot. I mean, that’s what you want to see when the game’s on the line. Two big bodies there that are getting in front of high-powered shots. So, uh, from that standpoint, from the stand from the forwards and and on the defense, I think there’s been some integration here, but every team has it every year. And with the foundation that they have here, it’s a lot easier to integrate those players. What are you going to watch for today, Paul? Like, we often talk about how the styles in the East and West are different, and it’s different going up against a team like Dallas and LA that you see three, four times a year that you have a history with than the Islanders that you only face twice. Uh, but when you look at this Jets group with the way that we have seen the progression from game one to game two, what are you looking to see from them today against this Islanders group? Well, first off, I want to see that top line still drive offensively and they’ve done that for two games for sure. Cal Connor in game one with a three-goal performance and then Mark Schiffley with two goals in the win on Saturday afternoon. So, that line has to drive. They have to score. They know that they’re they’re paid to do that. This Islander team is not the same Islander team that we used to see consistently where they would win a game one nothing 2-1 and have probably one of the best fourth lines in in the game in Sikas, Clutterbuck and Martin. Well, the last two guys that I mentioned um are no longer here. Uh Casey Suzikas is playing game number 900 of his NHL career today. All of them with the New York Islanders. So, the fourth line is different. So, in saying that, that brings me to my point. The fourth line for the Winnipeg Jets, I’ve really enjoyed watching in Keepy, Pearson, and Baron. And maybe they can have an impact on this game as well. And if they can, and the top line is going, it softens everything else up for the the other two lines on the Winnipeg Jets. So, I’m looking for the fourth line to continue doing what they have been doing in two games for sure. And that includes Morgan Baron winning defensive zone faceoffs late in games in his in his own zone. And this is a guy that’s really this is his first full-time year as a centerman in the National Hockey League. And then just making sure that you move the puck efficiently and stay out of the penalty box. You know, the penalty kills been really good, but they’ve given up five power play chances in each of the two games. That’s 10 in in total. And while they are nine for 10 on the kills, I still think it’s probably two or three power plays overall too many. Before I let you go, buddy, I know you got to get ready for the for the game itself. Uh we’re asking our viewers, what’s your game day superstition? And I’ve been with you in the booth for three years and travel with you over the time, but what’s your game day superstition before you go to podcast? JT, I I’m surprised you asked me this question because you you used to bug me. What did you used to bug me about after we would have the meal? your pills. That’s right. I would take that. That’s Why don’t you tell the story? It’s just I I take my vitamins I take my vitamins and an acid reflux pill every single game day at the same time. So you can enlighten our listeners on that. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He brings it on the table, unfolds it because it’s pulled up perfectly. And there’s the vitamins. The acid reflex was working with me for three years. So that’s Well, I used to take I used to take two with you. I only take one with Mitchell now. And Sarah would go with you because of my uh my lack of preparation sometimes. Just likes to roll the dice. Molly. Yeah. No, there’s certain there’s certain ways I have things laid out and there’s certain times of of game day depending on the time of game that I do things. And one of them would be when I take my vitamins and my acid refunds pill after the pregame meal. Buddy, thanks as always for coming on. Have a great and we’ll talk to you soon. Yeah. All right. Talk to you guys when we get home again. Yeah. See you. Okay. Bye, Paulolly. The best. I love the way that you just teed him up for us. The interest. You knew exactly what it was going to be because the exact same thing with the microphone. I did this all the time on the radio broadcast. I would do I would he would throw to me out of the lead. He’d read this perfect lead. Yeah. And I would start talking and my microphone would be turned off. So it’s just You even had that issue then? Oh, I told you I came from television where everybody did everything for me. So it’s just like I’m a smaller version of an athlete where everyone has to think for me and then all I had to do was just react on the on the set. That’s it. That’s why we have the problems we have today. You’re welcome everybody. You know what? when Paul was talking about how um Nassau Coliseum used to be that it was one of those buildings that was just it had so much history and it certainly it lacked all of the modern amenities. Yes. Or it but it had personality. I did the Islanders Penguin series. I can’t remember which year when like what a fun series. Yes. And so you’d go so the Penguins ended up winning that series. It was it was just the atmosphere in there was incredible. Then when the Penguins won though. Yeah. I mean, Islanders fans were obviously not happy about it. I remember doing an on ice interview with Sydney Crosby um afterwards and he we actually had to move towards the glass. So they couldn’t be behind you. Well, so that because they were chucking stuff on the ice. So I thought, where am I? This is unbelievable. Um, yeah. So, it was certainly it was uh but there was something as much as I say it was crazy. Yeah. There was something that was uh so unique and so special uh about it. So, we mentioned that the Islanders 0 and2 to start the season. They lost 4-3 to Pittsburgh, 4-2 to Washington. Um out of the playoffs last year as well. They dealt with so many injuries for them. So, and Barzal was one of them. Yes. Yeah. So, this is what do we have? We do. Of course. This is what we are expecting based on their practice. I’m not going to touch anything. And there goes this is what their anticipated lines are. This came out of their practice yesterday. Uh they have said that Ilia Sroken will play. He’s 3-2 against the Jets career with a 932 save percentage, 2.03 goals against average and one shut out in those five games. Uh but really when you look at it to me what intrigues me most about this team actually so first Jonathan Direan draws back in the line of suspended for one game. So, he goes back in on that top line, but it’s really Matthew Schaefer is is who I want to be watching. The youngest defenseman in NHL history to get a point in his debut, beating out Scott Neita, who did it in 1991. Uh, the youngest player to record more than 25 minutes in a game. He played in his second game, 26 minutes. He had one goal, eight shots. Incredible. Um, second youngest Islander, right, to score his first career goal. Here is my question. This could have been my question of the day for um for fans, right, would be who was the youngest Islander to score their first goal? To score first goal. And I ask you this obviously because they were playing the Winnipeg Jets. So this is not just randomness. There is a connection here. Uh it would be Bob Nestrom. No, a Jets connection. Yeah. Okay. I’m missing the boat here. Go ahead. Nino. Oh, cuz for those that don’t remember, I mean, he has played for drafted by the drafted by the Islanders in 2010, fifth overall. So, um, Nino need Ryder was the youngest Islander to score his first career goal. Matthew Schaefer becomes second. Schaefer drafted, selected first overall in this past year’s draft. And great story, tremendous story. He was tremendous in the interviews that he did on that day and since then. Um, so great to be able to see um, him have early success the way that he has. Looking forward to watching him today. And, you know, regardless of which team you cheer for, I think that as sports fans, so many of us cheer for good stories or want to see good things happen to good people. And certainly that that seems to apply to Matthew Schaefer. Uh, you heard Paul talk about we uh, before we we were going to get to this um, before you heard Paul talk about the penalty kill. Yes. Talking about, you know, not great. They’re taking so many penalties. obviously is not something something you want to play with, but they are nine for 10. They have two short-handed goals. Yeah. Almost a third because Morgan Baron out wrestled Quinn Biffield for the puck in the Jet zone. They got the puck off to Shley and he gets the goal to tie it um with the penalty winding down. So, they’re nine for 10, two short-handed goals. So, Mike McIntyre asking yesterday about the dangerous penalty kill. Like, you just want to kill penalties, but there’s an offensive flare to them because of the fact that Kyle Connor and Mark Schiff are killing penalties a little bit more this year. Here’s that uh here’s that answer from Scar O’Neal and of course Logan Stanley. Yeah, it gives gives us life for sure and and uh you know if you’re a threat on the kill it it gives a different element. I don’t think uh we’re going to keep running at the same pace as we are right now. But um yeah, it’s nice to be able to have a threat and you know get a few shorties throughout the year and um you know we got good players on the ice that can finish when they get chances. It’s been good. It’s been really good. And uh the one thing kind of about the league, it kind of you usually see power plays start slow, penalty kills start strong. That’s great. Last year we were the opposite way where it took a while for just because Dino coming in new look kind of we were doing some of the things we’re doing different. Um it’s nice that the guys are all fresh with it. We kind of just carried it over from last year and um you know, so there’s a lot to build on. We got some new bodies that were teaching, but I really like the way that those guys are grasping how we’re how we’re killing and um yeah, so far it’s been good. Hopefully we obviously going out the road needs to be just as strong. There he is. Scarter Neil and Logan Stanley. It he talked about Dean. That’s Dean Chanel, one of the assistant coach of the Jets. Y speaking with the players, they said this second year with under Chanel’s penalty kill system, it’s more now they’re just reacting instead of thinking about everything. And Josh Morris he was saying on the penalty kill if you are one second off you’ll miss a pass that if you’re not in the right lane or whatever too. He said that’s the part of where you’re thinking instead of just reacting or thinking as opposed to reacting and they’re getting more comfortable and you’re seeing that their penalty kill has been very good and the only goal they’ve given up was at a five on three um that they had almost killed off. So while you don’t want to continue to keep playing with fire, at least you have that comfortability and you know reliance on your penalty killers um that they can get the job done. Yeah, great to see the success early on. I mean, other than those teams, I think there’s six or seven teams that haven’t given up um a goal yet short-handed, but otherwise, Jets with 90% have one of the highest, the next highest uh PK. But look, at any point, as they all said, you love to see it have success when it’s called upon. You do not want to see it called upon on the average five times in a game because you are just playing with fire, regardless of how great your PK is. And you don’t want to put them in a position where they have to be blocking that much more that many more shots because I’m sure Logan Stanley doesn’t want to be on the ice for two and a half minutes at the end of every game if that makes any sense. So 100%. But uh great effort by them. As we get ready to wrap up, just a reminder that the game so it gets going in an hour um out out east. So that’ll be 12:00 central. You can listen to it on CG on Power 97. CJ’s uh pregame show will be underway. TSN does not have a pregame show today. So, they will get going right at 12:00 Central. I like uh you know, a lot of people, there were a couple people that had guessed need a rider. Yeah. Uh which is great. But what I’m loving is that there’s seems to be a lot of talk about the slurpee addition to Canada Life Center and how people are big fans of being able to Okay. Okay. So, I move I move here. Yes. And I’m here and it’s a slurpie capital of Canada. No way. because I thought Alberta was. But now that I’ve been around long enough, I think we’re the slurpy capital of the world, aren’t we? Well, probably. Probably. Yeah. Yeah. Yes. You can’t believe there’s a 7-Eleven candle lifesaver. 7-Eleven. You could sponsor the show, too, if you want. We’re taking anybody right now. In fact, slurpies. I could do the sugar intake. He doesn’t love sugar to the same extent I do. But, well, in different forms because I will apple fritter, cookies, pie. As we were just talking about, my wife made an amazing pumpkin cheesecake yesterday. Yes. Yeah. So, that part, but I will not I can’t drink slurpies. The three challenge says Matt. Three slurpies, three jets dogs. Oh, whoa. Matt, that’s that’s a lot now. So, are you challenging us to do this? No, no, Matt. You know what? Take a picture. Yeah. Send it in. We’ll We will We’ll put it up. Yeah. We will highlight it for you. Uh just a couple notes just quickly as we wrap up here. Uh Josh Morsy one assist away from becoming the franchise leader in assists. He would by defenseman which would overtake uh Dustin Bufflin. Mark Shley four points which you think I mean he’s not going to get four points today. Oh today today. Okay. But then I mean you never know. You look to become to become uh four points from passing Blake Wheeler for the all-time points leader in this franchise. So, uh, certainly it would be I prefer to do it here, but so would I. He can get five points. I’ll forgive him if he does it today. Yeah, four points. No, you have to get five, though, Mark. A little past. Uh, so the Jets playing the New York Islanders today. They will fly into Philadelphia because of their early start. They will fly into Philadelphia. It’s a day off for them tomorrow, so there will be no updates coming from Jets land. They will practice again on Wednesday before playing Thursday in Philadelphia. One of the things that I look forward to talking about throughout this season and just keeping an eye on is the way that the Jets are approaching their road trips this year, especially because of the condensed schedule. We talked about that last year with everything that was uh going on with the four nations. This year the it’s even more condensed when you look at it with the Olympic break and how the majority of February is off. So they are approaching their road trips differently in terms of travel instead of flying home right after a lot of the games did most time. Yes. So they only do the only time traditionally they would fly if it’s in the Pacific time zone. Yeah. And you would have to come or if a game starts at 8:00 p.m. say in Edmonton, we would always fly back the next day. The next day. And so they’re trying different things this year to try to really deal with um just the fatigue that’s going to be happening on these players and the wear and tear on it. So that’s something that we’ll talk about a little bit more when they play in Philadelphia on Thursday before they come home for one against Nashville on Saturday. Always love those games against the Flyers and always love this game against the Islanders. Uh happy Thanksgiving to you. Yes. Hope you if you had your dinner yesterday, great. If you’re having it today and please enjoy enjoy leftovers. Yeah, pumpkin pie. Sarah and I are grateful for you for tuning in this morning and enjoy the day off if you’re working. Thank you for watching us while you’re supposed to be working. That’s great as well. That’s a challenge. There you go. If you can watch us while you’re working, that’s a that’s a skill. But uh we appreciate it though as always. Thanks so much everyone for checking in. Uh, hope to see a great game from the Jets this afternoon. They won their last afternoon game. Why not make it two in a row? All right, thanks. Thanks so much for checking in, everyone. Have a great day. [Music]
The Jets make their only trip of the season to UBS Arena to face the Islanders. Sara and Jamie will get you set for the matinee contest with the question of the day “Which Jet are you thankful for?” and also welcome the voice of the Jets, Paul Edmonds to the show.
