The Carolina Panthers finally have a winning record; Carolina Hurricanes look to remain unbeaten …
And much like last week, the idea is to stay positive. Is to stay positive and not worry about the things that you cannot control. And there are a handful of worries about the Carolina Panthers as they walk out of New York with a 13-6 victory. But we’re going to stay positive. Four and three on the season. Say it again. Four and three. the first time the Panthers have been above 500 this late in a season since 2019. There are kindergarten kids who do not know such success as the Carolina Panthers have had right now. And that is amazing to believe. Best game of his career from Xavier Lee. Carolina Panthers 13, New York Jets six. Panthers get their first win on the road. Positive. They do not give the New York Jets their first win. Positive. They expose the Jets for who they are, which is a bad, bad NFL football team. With a head coach who feels like he’s even more over his head than he was when he took the job. He wanted to create some sort of chemistry, some sort of like this is us and this is us right now is a hot mess. And so we’re going to stay positive. Bryce, game manager, young. Same kind of bit. Rico Dattle. And I’m hopping all over the place right now because I’m trying to stay positive. The team that many people told you they don’t care about. The team that many people told you that you should not care about is now four and three in a game and a half outside of Tampa Bay. And Tampa Bay plays tonight. So, they could close that gap even more. Was it the prettiest of games? Nah, it wasn’t Rico Dattle. And I say amateurs borrow and professional steel. So I’m taking from Rico Dattle. It was an ugly grind out win, but a win is a win. And that’s what it was. Now positive, positive, positive. JC Horn, one-handed grabs. My goodness. So awesome. Do you think he could play both ways? Travis Hunter did not play both ways yesterday in the Jacksonville loss in uh London. But he had his he had his best game though. I guess he had 100 yards 100 yards receiving. Yeah. It turns out if you only have to focus on one side of the ball, you might be a little bit better on that side. You’re okay. You’re okay. JC Horn focuses on one side of the ball and do nose ball with two picks and a and a uh a drive killer of a second pick. And I guess a drive killer of the first pick too was in the end zone. So there’s that. So Dave Canales, the golden retriever of the NFL, who should be smiling a lot more these days. Remember, a win is a win, and this team can win in multiple ways, says Rico Dattle. Talked about JC Horn’s performance against the Jets. Yeah, clutch play. Um, just do right longer, you know, being in position and then just the ball skills, you know, to be able to come up with the catches on those, you know, as a dominant receiver on those plays. um where all of a sudden the ball’s up and like you know he’s bigger and faster and he’s got great hands and just to be able to you know come through for his teammates in those situations giving us a chance to end the game on the second drive to last. Um but then just you know Mike Jack coming up with some clutch plays as well to give us one more shot to get a first down and end it. And no no no we were talking about JC Horn. We were talking about JC Horn. Let’s sneak Mike Jackson in there. You could just see Mike Jackson in there when you’re talking about the illustrious duo of Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields. He just wants to make sure everybody gets credit for for their part. Not everybody gets credit. Not every unit contributed to a 13-6 win. The overunder on this thing was 42. We thought we were going to get a few more points. Well, I think a lot of that was thanks in part to the Jets doing their thing. Yep. Let’s stay positive. Four and three. A first road win for the Carolina Panthers. Six sacks. Six. That was the craziest part of the game for me when they flash up the uh the graphic on the screen. It’s like sacks this season, five, sacks in this game, six. Or like that should tell you everything you need to know about what’s going on with the Jets. And not that that’s anything new. Anyone who’s been paying a lick of attention to football over the last, I don’t know, 15 years knows that this isn’t anything new, but it was an impressive performance. Uh, this continued to do what they’ve done well, uh, especially defensively over the last couple of weeks in really stuffing the run and then adding on that pass rush that we haven’t really gotten to see. And uh part of that could also be thanks to, you know, Nick Scon getting an increased role with the injury to Pat Jones who had this surgery and he’s out for the season. Saw some young guys getting a couple more opportunities which was nice. And Derek Brown just continuing to be an absolute monster on the interior defensive line. Yeah, he is just pancaking dudes. He’s just pancaking. It’s not even funny. His athleticism is ridiculous. When he went to run after Justin Fields, chased him out of bounds and then came out like he didn’t even want to come out. He’s like, “Dude, just give me some water. I’ll go right back in there. I’ll make that happen. The Justin Fields thing is interesting. I’m I’m I’m surprised that they went with him at the start of this year to be like their guy and now he’s getting benched. All right. I mean, he did kind of No, he did get knocked. Yeah. But I don’t know if they maybe they didn’t say I I that’s on me. I maybe should have checked to see if uh Aaron Glenn had elaborated on that whether or not that was more of a benching or an injury type of thing. But I mean, I don’t think anyone would blame him if they straight benched him because that offense is just not moving the ball as well. And and in week one, you thought it might be decent this year because they were going crazy against the Steelers week one. That was an absolute shootout and then they’ve just struggled to replicate that since then. The New York Giants lost a 19-point lead in the fourth quarter to the Denver Broncos yesterday. And still more and more people are talking about how the Jets cannot get on or stay on the field or put up actual points. Nick Folk kicked a field goal and the place went absolutely bonkers. Bonkers. I was a little worried. Two field goals and the place went nuts. He was like, “Oh my god, we scored.” the first drive it felt like they were in a bit of a rhythm and they were coming down there and then Panthers get the fourth down stop and all of a sudden the just any sort of momentum they possibly had was completely halted. Uh Panthers never let them establish any sort of run game. Uh Bree Hall was that’s true that running attack. Yeah. Pretty much completely limited. uh which again has been more of the same over the last couple weeks for the Panthers defense who gave up what 180 yards a game last year on the ground and I’m sure again I should have pulled up the box score so I have the exact number but having given up only 50 combined rush yards the last two weeks had to be less than 100 yesterday as well it was 81 yards yesterday yeah I mean they’ve been fantastic so you can’t deny the progress that we’re seeing in the areas of need for the Panthers the ones that we’ve talked about ad nauseium last year and coming into this season and even after the first couple of games it looked like maybe some of those areas weren’t shor up and weren’t fixed some of those are starting to you know kind of come into fruition now now of course you have to factor in the quality of opponent over the last few weeks okay we were trying to stay positive Max but here okay well let’s turn the page you can only beat the teams in front of you I know let’s let’s turn the page yeah we can turn the page we can turn the page now 13 to6 Panthers over the Jets that’s Max Gore and Paul Ihander with you next up here on 999 the fan. Uh Bryce Young, we got to talk about it. Uh right ankle injury. Not quite sure what’s going on there. Had to come out. He got stepped on. He got stepped on. He was making a turn of the back field. It wasn’t because he did one of those awkward slides, which again, can we get the man a slip and slide or five of them and just make him, you know what, you’re going to get this right. You’re going to get this right. Instead of kind of like this kind of I’m six years old, just learning how to get down on the ground kind of thing. Uh, he got stepped on though. It wasn’t, you know, it wasn’t his fault to get stepped on, so he had to go. So, Andy Dalton came in, had to had to do that. So, the game manager, Bryce Young, who managed the game properly, there’s no doubt about it. Uh, we’ll see. And this is one of those things where if you’ve got a team now on a three-game win streak, if you can believe that this is a three-game win streak, depending on how Young’s ankle’s going, and he was in a boot after the game yesterday, and that could be just precautionary, too. So, hey, let’s just keep this thing stable because high ankle sprains in the NFL are real. There’s no doubt about that. Andy Dalton could be in for a few more reps. Now, that might be putting the cart way, way far ahead of the horse. Like, we haven’t even hitched that bad boy together yet, but that is something to watch. Bryce Young did get hurt, and the last few weeks of play for Bryce Young during this win streak have been very game managerial, and no one’s complaining about game management. That’s not that’s not what we’re complaining about by any means. The Jets are a bad football team. Okay, so this is where you want to this is where you want to put that away. And Max, you were hinting on it right away. Here comes the true test in the next two weeks as a 4 and3 Panthers team. All of a sudden, it’s like, okay, they’re winners. This is a different team to prepare for now next week for the Buffalo Bills. coming off of uh coming off of a by-week as well, which you know, never never helps when you’re going up against the opponent who’s coming off the buy and has had the extra time to prepare. Now, hopefully there’s a chance Bryce Young can go, but it definitely isn’t looking great. I saw some kind of I don’t know if you consider it analysis. I don’t even really know who it was from, but I think it was a a former NFL doctor had some sort of podcast and uh I think he had said that he’s probably not looking great for this upcoming week, but it shouldn’t be anything super long term. Now, granted, that’s from just a a a random probably former NFL doctor because I didn’t really verify any of that, but sure. Hey, listen. It was some kind of sports injury podcast. I’m sure you could look this up if you wanted to, but uh you know, hopefully there’s a chance he can go. Uh again, it’s not looking great with the boot and everything. And Andy Dalton was not super impressive when he had to come in. He looked rusty. He did. He looked rusty, but I mean, they were just really trying to finish things out and, you know, get it out of there with a win. So, they probably weren’t opening up the playbook super super wide with Andy in there. Of course, he was uh he has a pretty good connection with Xavier Legette, though, who had a great game as well. Had his best game as a pro. Um we’ll see if he gets more involved here in this upcoming week if Andy Dalton is the starter. Um and then they’ll just have to lean on that run game. Uh hopefully Rico Dattle gets a little bit more of a share of the carries. Okay. Yeah, let’s talk about this a bit. Um neither Rico or Troubah could really get into rhythm with this tandem thing. Yeah. Yeah, and they were doing the driveby drive thing which was interesting. But it was pretty clear I felt after the first few that Rico was just more effective running the ball has been the last few weeks. He’s better. He’s just better right now than Chuba Hubard. And regardless of money that was spent between these two guys and the extension or whatever it is, sometimes you just got to play the best guy and not necessarily be fair about it. And yes, you want to get him reinvolved and get involved the offense because you don’t want the guy to sit around either, but you’ve got a hot hand. I’m like, this is this is like uh the shooter at the craps table, right? You get a hot shooter. I’m like, no one’s replacing the guy until he until or woman person, sorry, until they until they run out of throws. I mean, that’s what it is. You don’t yank out. And it was it was it was unusual. Like they canal has to figure that one out. and he talked about it Monday, well before the report came out Sunday morning. Shaft is like, “Oh, the Panthers are calling around asking people how to work with the tandem running back.” No, they’ve been working on that for a week, like knowing when Chuba was coming back. This wasn’t just like a day of revelation and they didn’t quite figure it out now against the Jets. Maybe you didn’t really have to. You didn’t really have to. Jets gave you six sacks. Like, so it’s pretty clear that that offensive line is a is a bunch of matadors. Olay, here comes Derek Brown. Olay, here comes Nick Scorton. Olay, here comes Princely. Here comes Trayvon Merrick. Yeah, Trayvon Merrick. Gez, how’s that guy getting in the back field and blasting Justin Fields? Oh, Fields wasn’t even looking at him. He’s staring at us one receiver. Fun fact about Trayvon Merrick. I I believe uh he leads the NFL in tackles for loss by a safety. Yeah, that was his that’s that’s that’s the reputation, right? He’s living up to it. He’s living up to it. Uh, so they got to figure that one out, too, right? We were trying to stay positive the entire thing. 13 to6. I’m not finding crap on the shoe on a on a walk through the park on a sunshiny day. I promise. 13 to6 over the Jets. This was a cure for insomnia. If you had recorded this game and then played it back at night, you would have fallen asleep immediately after watching the Jets offense operate. It was It was sad. And they had opportunities, too, because uh obviously, you know, with the Bryce Young injury, Andy Dalton came in, offense looked a little bit out of sync. Jets kept getting the ball back, but Panthers defense is up to the task. And the ball JC Horn playing awesome uh defensive front, absolutely stuffing the run for a third straight week. So, uh I’m glad they were able to execute and finish things off there. But uh obviously going to be quite a test coming up next Sunday. Uh and then the week after that, too. Although while the Packers are good, I don’t think they’re quite the juggernaut level that a lot of people were kind of hyping them up to be at the start of this year. Obviously, still going to be a tough road trip going to Lambo, but uh hopefully if Bryce Young is able to come back by then, Panthers will have a game plan and be ready to compete in that one. Oh, they’ll need a game plan. They will need a game plan for sure. 13 to6 Panthers over the Jets. Uh the other thing that needs to be figured out is how to get Jaylen Coker back involved in this offense. Uh they had him blocking on a couple of plays, but really he had like one target and he wasn’t really the target. It was kind of thrown in between him and Leette in the end zone. I think it was Legette, maybe it was Sanders, maybe it was I don’t know who the hell it was. It’s kind of tough to tell. But see, how do you get how do you run packages for Jimmy Horn Jr. like intentional packages and then not do the same for Coker? Like did he fall out of favor that far? And I don’t want to crap on what’s happening right now because it is a 4 and3 team and you want to be able to just to kind of breathe that one in a little bit for a while because Panthers fans haven’t had a chance to breathe something like this in for a bit and regardless of opponent, regardless of who they’re playing and regardless of the outcome of the score, a win is still a win. Yeah. Four and three still looks pretty good, especially in the NFC South. Yeah, it looks it looks really good compared to anything they’ve seen on the field over the last handful of years. as we mentioned, it’s it’s been four years since they’ve been above 500 at any point. So, it’s good that they’re able to win the games they’re supposed to win. Uh, and next week, even if Bryce Young’s not able to go, if they can get back into that rushing attack they had over the the last few games before this one, uh, they’ll be able to compete because you if you control the ball and you can control the clock like that and your defense keeps playing the way it’s been playing, you can compete with anybody. Uh, but again, it’s just getting into that rhythm. They still have to figure out the whole tandem thing. I don’t know if the driveby drive system they were going with is going to be the the move for them going forward. But, uh, I feel good. I, you know, hopefully the prognosis with Bryce Young is is positive. I I think we’ll hopefully find out more about that today. Hopefully nothing too serious. But, uh, I feel cautiously optimistic at this point. Take the dubs when you can get them. Take the dubs where you can get them. We will keep you updated on the Bryce Young situation throughout the day. Obviously, stick around here on 999 the Fan, certainly with Adam Gold at noon, Tim Donnelly at 3, and through our app 99 the Fan. You can download through the Apple Store or Google Play Store for Android. [Music] I’m Max Goran with three things you need to know right now from 999 the Fan. It’s a hockey night in Carolina. The still undefeated Hurricanes continue their state fair road trip tonight in Vegas against the Golden Knights. Storm Watch with Adam Gold begins at 9:30 ahead of a 1000 p.m. puck drop right here on 999 the fan. After defeating the Jets 13 to6 yesterday, the Carolina Panthers improved to 4-3 on the season, giving the team a winning record for the first time since October 2021. Bryce Young exited the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury. His status for next week against Buffalo is still unknown. It was a rough weekend in the triangle in terms of college football. On Friday night, a crucial fumble at the goal line with just under four minutes to go led to UNCC’s third straight loss against Cal. Then on Saturday, Georgia Tech remained undefeated and took down Duke 27 to 18 at Wallace Wade Stadium. This Saturday, Duke will be idle and Carolina will play host to Virginia. Find these stories and more on wlports.com and the 999 the fan app. We are drunk on winds when it comes to the Carolina Hurricanes. We are milkshake drunk. We are tequila drunk. The amount of shots that the Carolina Hurricanes have been pouring on in the first five games of the season. My goodness. My goodness. Call the designated driver. The Canes 5 and0. 3-0 on this roadie with three to go. Overtime against the Kings early Sunday morning. Yes, out west. It is a Sunday morning finish. Seth Jarvis playing lights out hockey right now uh with his overtime gamewinner. The fourth game winner of the season for Seth Jarvis. The fourth. Now, I don’t want to discount Jordan Stall’s first two goals which came within the first four minutes of this game. Yeah. He scored what 12 seconds in for the first one. 12 seconds and then 358 in the first. the fastest two goals in Hurricanes history by the same person and the fourth fastest all time in the NHL. Jordan Stall trying to put his name in stone somewhere or plaque somewhere. Hurricanes are playing very good hockey right now. They even got Brandon Busy another win. Now there are concerns. We have not seen Jacob Slavven on this road trip. Shane Gossas Bear got exited off the ice during that game against the Kings. So, we’re a little banged up. Just a little banged up. Uh, let’s talk about Seth Jarvis first. Head coach ride Brenda Moore thankful for Jarvis’s hot start. Well, he’s special player and special times, right? Like we we he’s time and time again seems to be coming through for us. So, um I mean again we need all kinds of guys, but he’s a different player than Doro, but just as valuable. Remember in 2022 when he could barely get on the ice like skating like nine minutes a fourth line 10 minutes just limping on over the bench man I can’t figure this out. He had like nine goals that season and then he’s rolling. He’s been rolling and he’s the guy that comes with almost like I don’t want to say quiet confidence because he’s not that guy. He’s not quiet guy by any means. He’s a very emotional guy when it comes to hockey. But man, there is a confidence when he touches the puck that I’m not sure even he’s been able to unlock until now. He’s really, I think, and people around the league are noticing this as well. He’s starting to elevate from very good player, like good two-way player, can score a little bit, does things the right way to, okay, like this guy is a star player. He might have 40 goals this year. He might be a point per game guy this year and he’s doing it all while being a really good defensive forward as well. So much so there’s a little buzz going around about him being a Silky candidate which is extremely rare as a as a winger as well. So, uh it’s just that continued development and he’s getting a little older. You know, he’s gaining that confidence. uh the skill set has always kind of been there, but when you add in the confidence to shoot from the hip and uh just kind of impose your will out there, we’re seeing the results of that. And the result of that is an NHL record in four game-winning goals in your team’s first five games. It’s easy to talk about Seth Jarvis because he’s playing so well right now. We’re going to get a a hell of a matchup tonight with some of the most elite goal scorers on the planet. Goal scorers and point scorers. This is There’s no doubt a step up tonight when they play Vegas. Yeah, Jack Eel’s on on fire right now. Mark Stone has been Mark Stone. I mean, and for a guy who literally just Mark Stone, it’s Mark Stone. Mark Stone does Mark Stone things. He does. He sees the icy pass. I as much as it is to glaze up and and uh the Vegas Golden Knights. I do want to talk about Jordan Stall real quick. Jordan Stall and head coach Rod Bendmore says it too. And we’ll go over Jordan’s numbers on Saturday night as well. Uh here’s here’s Rod on the stall line and their performance against the Kings. Well, it’s they just started with a puck. I mean, he was 90% on faceoffs, right? Just think about that for a minute. That’s every shift that you’re out there and then you’re starting with a puck. You know, people wonder why that’s, you know, is that important. Well, just watch the game. You can see on the flip side, if you’re doing the other way, you’re just defending the whole time. So, that’s uh he was so impactful tonight. That line was great. And uh you know, like I said, that’s we’re fortunate to have him. Yeah. Uh two goals. He had four shots, blasted a couple dudes, blocked a shot. And Rod said it there, too. 90% in the faceoff circle. He had 25 shifts. He was 20 and two. He won 20 of 22 battles in the dot. And of course, that’s stupid. Of course, at the start of overtime, too, he gets kicked out of the faceoff circle. And Keandre Miller has to take the face off and he loses it. That’s okay. Can’t expect a defenseman to win the face. Listen, KAR Miller played 27 minutes. He had an excellent game as well. Most of anybody on Saturday night, especially with these Dmen dropping like flies here early in the season, just his performance. And uh it’s going to be, I’m sure, bigger minutes tonight if if Ghost is not able to go. And maybe we’ll see uh Charles Alexis Lgo get his first uh NHL regular season action. But um Keandre Miller early dividends, you know. Oh, for sure on on that contract for sure. Fill in the bucket. There’s no doubt about it. He fills the bucket in every way possible. Like it’s whatever the Rangers did. Again, we’re five games in. It’s easy to get over our skis here when you talk about this team, but whatever the Rangers did to Miller, like they’re undoing it very quickly here. Whatever it is, they I He understands it. Straight uh running it back of another defenseman outcast from the Rangers that finds success. It was Tony D’Angelo. It was Brady Sheay. Now it’s Keandre Miller. It’s something about the former Rangers defenseman when they come to Carolina were able to unlock their potential. Now, if Gosh Despair can’t go tonight, you mentioned LGO, it will mean most likely that we’ll see a little bit more power play time for Nikeshan andor Walker. Walker hasn’t had a real chance to really run that that crew a little bit. We know Miller can we know Miller can pull it off. Uh but we’ll see who gets who gets that nod tonight for Rod when it actually comes down to that. Uh but but there’s no doubt about it. Hurricanes are playing lockown hockey right now. Playing very good hockey. Tonight is a Tonight will be a The next two games will be tests. It’s three games. I mean, you got Oh, yeah. Yeah. They got to come back here. Vegas, Colorado, and uh and Dallas all in a row. That is a bit of a murderous row. Those are probably uh besides the Hurricanes in my opinion. Uh and I wrote this uh in the I wrote a Friday column for our 999, the fan app on Friday, kind of just whipping around like the big stories of the NHL. I think those three teams are probably the three best teams in the NHL that are not named the Carolina Hurricanes. And the fact that they play them all in a row on the road is definitely going to be a test of this team’s medal, especially with the early injuries that they’re already dealing with. Can you believe that about a month or so ago, we had a contest to send someone to this game tonight, not knowing it was going to be like this kind of a game? Yeah, it was. and the way Vegas has started and and the way that Eichel is looking and uh the way they found they like it’s almost not even fair the way they find guys like uh Pavalor Five who just all of a sudden is this goalc scoring machine who looks like he’s going to be a yearly like 30 goal guy at least and then you also get Mitch Marner and then Mark Stone continuing to play at an elite level it feels like he’s been at that level for so long and he’s still getting it done and uh it’s it’s crazy. Um, you can’t miss one tonight. It’s going to be a good one. I I hope I’ll make it through. I had a 1045 game myself last night against uh 999, the fans own Dennis Cox. Uh, so it’s it’s going to be tough to get all the way through the end of another 10 p.m. start, but I’m going to try I’m going to try to do it for the for for the station, for the people. There you go. Hey, we stay up so you all don’t have to. That’s for sure. All right, friends. Uh that is tonight 10:00 puck drop right here on 999.

We still need a quarterback.
We’ll beat the bills and lose to the Green Bay. I’m cool with that
