Knicks Make MULTIPLE Roster Moves, Regular Season Roster Is Set | NY Knicks News

The preseason is over. The Knicks start their season this week. Their roster is set as they made multiple roster moves that we got to break down on today’s show. Before we do that though, if you want the Knicks to win the NBA Finals this year and put a banner in the rafters of the world’s most famous arena, hit that thumbs up icon right now. This is New York Knicks now by chat sports and I am your host Marshall Green. Appreciate everybody for stopping by as we recap the New York Knicks roster moves as they had some decisions to make following the final preseason game. They have the roster set and we are ready to roll for game one this Wednesday against the Cleveland Cavaliers which we will be live on the channel 4. We’re going to be live for almost every Knicks game this year. So, sub for Nick Stubs and turn your notifications on. All righty. The first roster move the Knicks made. They have waved sharp shooting Garrison Matthews. The 6’6 28-year-old has been one of the better three-point shooters in the NBA over the past couple of years. He shot the ball well at the beginning of the preseason for the Knicks. He was in a competition with Landry Shamut to make the team. He unfortunately did not. There were some quotes that emerged that he was not interested in signing with the nextGeague team. So, we’ll see if he has a future with this squad. The reason they chose Shamut over Matthews was because of the defensive versatility and really just defensive ability that Shamut possesses over Matthews. I think he’s a good guy. I think he shoots the pill well. Would like to have him back potentially down the line. We’ll see what happens there. The New York Knicks are also moving on from the 32-year-old center Alex Lynn. The seven-footer was at training camp for the New York Knicks on a non-g guaranteed deal. He ended up not making the team. The Knicks are a little bit thin at that center spot with just really Mitchell Robinson, Ariel Huckport, and Carl Anthony Towns. We’ll see if he goes and latches on to another team or if the Knicks maybe string him along as someone they could look to as a injury replacement down the road. The Knicks are all also moving on from Matt Ryan, the other sharpshooter that they had at NBA training camp as well. 28-year-old played 19 games for the New York Knicks last year, a career three-point shooter of 40 plus%. They are moving on from him. So, the New York Knicks, they have 13ish 14ish players on the roster. I’ll tell you why I’m sounding like that in a second, but let’s just dive into who’s on this team and what this depth chart could potentially look like. Jaylen Brunson is your starting point guard. No surprises there. I think he could put together an MVP- like season this year once he finds the groove of this Mike Brown offense. I’m really excited to see what is going to happen. I don’t really think the Knicks have a backup point guard. I’ve got Miles McBride slotted into that spot um really because he’s kind of just the best option you have at that spot. I don’t think that he is really a point guard. I think he’s a offball wing trapped in a guard’s body, but uh you got what you got and you got Tyler Kick as your third string point guard as well. I’ve listed Jordan Clarkson as the backup shooting guard for the Knicks, but I think you could almost make the case that he is the backup point guard and he will be the guy that handles the rock off the bench. You’ll probably play Clarkson and McBride a little bit together and I think Clarkson should maybe handle the ball a little bit more. But Muel Bridges, your starting two guard, a lot of hype about him having, I guess you could say, a bounceback season in his second year with the Knicks. I thought he looked really good in the preseason. Mike Brown has been extremely loud and sung the praise of Bridges over the last couple of weeks. Called him an allNBA defender last week. I think his offense is going to grow. He’s going to have more opportunities. You just got to be more involved. The aggressiveness and the physicality seem to be there in the preseason. We’ll see how he ends up playing this year. And Landrew Shamut, who gets one of those final roster spots, he is your third string shooting guard. He also can play the small forward spot as well. your small forwards, OG and an Obi going to be the starter. Missed the last preseason game, I believe, with an ankle injury. Uh, we’ll see how serious that is. Injuries and OG and an Obi always scare me a little bit, but I’m not going to let this one ruin my mood up to this point. Josh Hart continues to battle uh some injuries that he is dealing with at this time. Uh, hasn’t returned to practice in a full capacity yet. So, we’ll continue to monitor that one. And then you got Pakome Dier, the secondyear first round pick at the back end of the bench at that small forward spot. Curious to see if he gets any minutes this year and if he’ll continue to be a Nick by the end of the season. I want to welcome back DraftKings, the sponsor here on New York Knicks now by Chad Sports. At the power forward spot, Carl Anthony Towns will be the starter there this year. number 32 coming off a career year with the New York Knicks played the center spot under Tom Tibido. Um I’m not worried about Carl Anthony Towns, but I didn’t love the way that he was used and played in the preseason. I think it’s going to take him a little bit of a little bit of time and some games and some minutes to find out what his role is and what’s the best way that he could be effective. I think Mike Brown and him will have to go through some trial and error. I thought he had a lot of success last year as a center because he was more athletic than the people that were guarding him. And on the defensive side of the ball, I worry about him guarding players on the perimeter. So, I don’t love that as well. Gershon Yabaelli is your backup power forward. Gave him $5 million to sign with the Knicks over two years. That second year as a player option. Uh he’s supposedly up to 283 pounds. He was at like 265 last year for the Sixers. I thought he looked a little bit big in the preseason. We’ll see if that’s something that could um be something that slows him down this year. Maybe it’s at all muscle and we’ll see. Uh and then you have Mohamad Diawara kind of on the team at the power forward spot. I’ve got an asterisk next to his name because he’s not technically on the team just yet. Maybe it could be coming. He was on an exhibit 10 deal which essentially is a training camp offer but you retain the rights to his GLeague rights to the Knicks and the Knicks cannot sign him to the second round exemption. So at this moment not including Mohamd Diawara you have just 13 players on the roster and the Knicks can carry 13 players for two weeks into the season before they have to reach the 14 player roster minimum. Then you have to get to 15 players on the roster. So, the Knicks will try to play that roster gymnastics game that they did last year. They’ll try to manipulate the salary cap the best that they can. Probably string along Diawara, put him on the G-League team. Maybe Garrison Matthews down the line ends up being that 15 man on the roster. So, still some back end of the roster shuffling continuing to go on and will be needed. as uh Keith Smith has reported and as we’ve talked about on this show, um the Knicks cannot sign Mohamd Diawara to that second round pick exemption, saying he’s not eligible. That contract has to be signed as the first contract the player signs as Diwirz signed an exhibit 10 deal. He’s no longer eligible. Why does that matter? Because the Knicks don’t have enough money under the second apron to make him a uh veteran a minimum salary at this point. if you would have signed to the second round pick exe exception from the jump, you would have been able to. So, they’re going to have to get tricky and try to find ways to uh manipulate the salary cap. I thought my guy Brutus on Twitter uh asked a good question saying, Keith, what is the reason you believe the Knicks did not use a second round draft pick exemption to sign Dawara? He said uh he said, “Couldn’t they have given him a longerterm deal as a second round draft pick pick exception?” and on the deal he has, doesn’t he become a restricted free agent after the season? He says, “My thought is that they didn’t want the extra years involved with using the TP uh TRP. He was picked 51st overall. I don’t think the Knicks are overly worried about him being a restricted free agent target for other teams next summer. He’d really need to pop for that to happen. That’s unlikely given New York is a title contender and won’t give him all that many minutes.” So, we’ll continue to keep you up to date on the Diwara saga and see where he winds up on this basketball team. Just two centers on this squad if you don’t want to count Carl Anthony Towns as well, who will be able to play that spot like he has his whole career. Mitchell Robinson, your starting center, and Ariel Hucky. I was really impressed with the way that Mitch looked and played in the preseason. He looked in shaped in shape. He looked healthy and he he looked locked in. I think he’s poised for a career year and I think Ariel Hawk is going to surprise some people this year. He could start some games with Robinson maybe sitting out back to backs again this season and I think there’s a world where Dio uh Ariel Hawky kind of emerges as the best player from that 2024 draft class that the New York Knicks had. So you take a look at the roster now you got 13 players on it with Diwara waiting in the wings. Maybe he gets brought up. Still some things that they could potentially go into. Jaylen Brunson, Bridges, OG, Towns, and Robinson. I believe that is going to be your starting five on opening night. Then your bench guys that I think will play every single game. Miles McBride, Jordan Clarkson, Josh Hart, and Gershon Yabellle. I think those four guys will see action every single night. Then you’ll see Ariel Hucky, I think, play some nights. Tyler Colet could play some nights. Landry Shamik could and maybe even a guy like Pomeier. So, you got 13 players on the roster. More moves could potentially come, but I want you to grade the New York Knicks roster before we get ready for game one of 82 this Wednesday. Get out your red pen, be honest. A, B, C, D, or F. Grade the New York Knicks roster as we are just a couple days away from game number one. Want to bring on my guy Andrew Connell, producer of the show before we bounce on out of here. Just curious your overall thoughts on the roster, where they sit, and are you ready for Knicks basketball Wednesday? Yeah, I’m fired up. Knicks uh Knicks basketball right around the corner, just two days away at time of recording. And um I don’t know. This is still I think people saw the Knicks as a title contender last season, but not like one of the top title contenders. They were still probably a tier below, but I think the Knicks are arguably the best team in the Eastern Conference and have a real chance to win the championship this year. So, it’s exciting. It’s unusual for Nick fans under a certain age to have that feeling heading into a season. And I think the roster looks pretty good. Pretty deep. Obviously hurt by the surprise retirement of Malcolm Brogden, but otherwise pretty deep roster. The Knicks have legit bench options. They should go be deeper than a year ago. And hopefully they can take some stress off the starters and have them not have to play that many minutes. What do you think about really just this overall team when it comes to the what give me one thing you look at as their biggest strength and maybe one of their biggest weaknesses or things you’re maybe a little bit worried about. Yeah, I think strengthwise it has to be kind of like the balance scoring and all the guys they have that can put the ball in the basket. You have Jaylen Brunson who one of the top scorers in the NBA, Carl Anthony Towns, arguably the best shooting big man of all time is a guy who puts up 20 plus a night regularly. And then you have guys like Bridges who we’ve seen him explode last year on Christmas for 41 points. OG Anobi I think is underrated as an offensive player. He is pretty good at getting his own shot and his shot I think has improved since he came to the Knicks. And then you have some punch off the bench as well. Deuce has grown so much as an offensive player. Clarkson is a guy who can heat up any night. So, I think just the amount of guys that can get their own shot and score, I think that’s a strength in the Knicks team. And weakness, I would have to say just defense. Uh, they have some good strong individual defenders, but as a team, they can kind of get picked on at times, especially when you have Brunson and Towns on the court at the same time. Uh, they’ll get isoed in pick and rolls. Sometimes teams will hunt them and it’s up to Mike Brown to try and scheme a better way where they don’t just hemorrhage points when those two get caught in pick and rolls and try and hide them a little bit as best you can. Yeah, I agree with all that. I think um the way they’re able to get stops will ultimately be the the wild card of if they’re able to get it done. I guess one more thing I have for you because a lot of people have asked me this is Marshall, are you worried that the Knicks were 31st in pace in the preseason despite Mike Brown making a conscious effort to verbalize they want to play faster practice they played faster? Do you think this team is capable of playing fast with the personnel that they have? Yeah, I think they are. I think it’s probably going to be more when the bench comes in the game and I think maybe that preseason metric has a little bit to do with the fact that Josh Hart was injured and missed some time in the preseason. He’s a guy who really kind of revs the pace for the Knicks, gets that rebound, can go and just go ahead and and get on a fast break and find open players or finish strong. Um really he doesn’t give you much on offense if it’s not on the fast break. Um I think guys like Deuce Clarkson can really help push that pace, but I we’ll see. I think they may have to find their time. I’m sure they weren’t trying to gas themselves in the preseason too much and and they have to also figure out their halfcourt offense because they’re under a new coach and a new system. So, I think they probably wanted to rep that a lot in the preseason as well preseason as well. So, not too worried. I think they can uh I think it’s going to have to be a concerted effort and I think most of these guys are probably more comfortable playing ISO ball in the half court because they’ve done that more of their career. But I don’t there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to. Yeah, I think that’ll be a storyline that we’ll probably spend a lot of time on. And I think also the the way that Mike Brown coaches this team, like it’s a new head coach, it’s a new philosophy on both sides of the floor. While I do think this team is capable of winning a title, I wouldn’t be shocked if maybe there’s some speed bumps out of the gate where they have to learn how to play the Mike Brown way and they have to figure out the best way to do that. So, even though I think this team is the best team in the East, I think maybe there’s some speed bumps out of the gate, but at the end of the day, uh, games in October do not matter. They lost by 30 on opening night last year to the Boston Celtics. Ended up beating them and beating them in six in the playoffs. It’s a long season. Um, but I’m pumped up, man. Going to be a lot of fun here on the channel. Yeah, I think on that just like Tom Tibido was someone who so prioritized the regular season and like it ended up maybe costing them when the team ran out of gas. I think that’s going to be a shift. They may win less games this regular season, but with the where this Knicks team’s at right now and trying to contend for a title, not that it doesn’t matter, but you didn’t hire Mike Brown to win more regular season. This like you’re measuring the Knicks and their success this season on how they do in the playoffs. Doesn’t matter if they win 45 or 55 games. Like it doesn’t really matter. It’s what round in the playoffs do they get to? Agreed. Agreed. Appreciate everybody for tuning in again. We’ll be live on the channel this Wednesday about 30 minutes before tip off. Want to see all you there. Subscribe and let’s go Knicks.

  2. The pressure for the Knicks this season must be on an unimaginably high level. Not only they have a chance to save NY sports but this could be their best chance to win in this decade. I’m excited but very fucking nervous.

  3. A-
I am concerned about the Knicks PG squad. Can they carry the Knicks through the season and win games without the starting PG Jalen Brunson or Brunson get rested on the bench.
    I know they can

  4. The only real improvement is the fact that we know the Knicks will use the bench. I think the Knicks should go out and get Alex Burks to have some one else to help the offense off the bench I also think they took a step back defensively.

  5. With Bridges STARTING at the 2, Robinson starting at the 5 and the additions to the bench…..I would say it's a B+ with the playing potential of being an A+. Let's go Knicks !!!

  6. I honestly think the over whelming pressure that everyone is putting on the knicks is crazy and very unfair……knicks is I believe the only team that put so much pressure on there team……..they need to stop that championship or bust bullshit
