I’m watching film for a video I’m making on Maye & Darnold deep balls this year.
Under pressure, gets his arm hit as he releases, right over the outstretched DB (impressive rookie nickel Jacob Parrish), into the only spot Dareke Young could catch it??
This throw is beyond impressive for a jump ball prayer.
It ended up being a free play due to a Lavonte David hold, but I think that was out of Darnold’s vision so he threw that up not knowing it was a free play. Could be wrong about that but holy cow what a ball

Oh my god Sam Darnold 😭

  1. I’ve been thinking about this throw at least once a day since that game. Arm talent has never been an issue of his.

  2. This is why I hate modern football broadcasts. The live view of this play was impressive, but an all-22 view where you can see the full route and get to see that the QB is on his face before the ball is even at its apex and watch the receiver adjust to make the catch is so much more satisfying.

This was supposed to be the promise of large HD tvs for sports, but instead the only view we get on the live broadcast puts the LOS in the middle of the screen then zooms in so tight on the QB that you don’t get to see any of the routes being run, then it tracks the ball in flight and you only see the receiver for the last second before the catch. You never see any routes or adjustments DBs make to shift coverage or what happens at the LOS after the throw.

I would pay way more than the cost of Sunday Ticket to get a live stream of the all-22 feed with just stadium audio.

  3. Sick throw, but also a savvy box out from Dareke Young (who has 4 receptions in 4 seasons he’s been a ST guy)

  4. I mean bc it worked out I’m super happy about it. But I’m not sure throwing this is a good decision. He had one of these against Jacksonville also that should have been picked and if it had it would have changed the complexion of that game.

  5. I’ll disagree. I think it was a terrible throw.

I was at the game live, and as soon as I saw him throw up that ball, I was cursing. He saw the guy in his face, was moving backwards, and chucked up a ball to a guy who was covered. It reminded me *alot* of the pick-6 geno threw to the Rams at home.

Obviously, it worked, and I was hyped when I saw Young come down with the catch, but I think Sam got lucky there.

  6. Is there a reason that they’ve been having darnold roll out and throw to the left a lot?
