The ILLEGAL Trade That Changed NHL History

Let me tell you about the illegal trade that changed the NHL forever. In 1990, the St. Louis Blues stole Scott Stevens from the Washington Capitals with a record-breaking offer sheet, five first round picks, and a $5 million deal. They tried the same trick a year later by stealing Brandon Shanahan from the New Jersey Devils, but the problem was they already traded those five first round picks. So, it went into court and the ruling was the Blues got Shanahan, but they traded Scott Stevens to the Devils. The man that the Blues overpaid became the core of three Devils Stanley Cops while the Blues got nothing. That one offer sheet caused salary chaos around the league. It led to two lockouts, brought in Gary Beman as commissioner, and even kickstarted the salary cap era. And the crazy part is that trade tree eventually led to Jordan Bingington and the Blues first Stanley Cup in 2019. All because of Scott Stevens.

  1. lol, it might have ruined Eric Lindros’s trajectory as well. Stevens scrambled his brain. He was never the dominant player again. Good, sure, but not dominant.
