DK’s Daily Shot of Steelers: Defense a real dilemma
[Music] I wanted the offense to put up 30 points for the first time. Didn’t think it was asking much. Turns out it wasn’t asking much. Actually, outdid that by one full point. I wanted the defense to just, I don’t know, be its best self. But it turns out nobody can really know right now what exactly that is. Good morning to you. Good Friday morning. I’m Dan Kvachovich of DK Pittsburgh Sports coming to you from Cincinnati. This is Daily Shot of Steelers presented by FanDuel. It comes your way bright and early every weekday. If you’re into hockey and or baseball, I also offer daily shots of Penguins and Pirates in the same place that you found this Bengals 33, Steelers 31. That’s Bengals without Joe Burrow. Bengals with the lowest ranked rushing offense in the league. Bengals without really a passable offensive line. Bengals without Mike Gasiki, their starting tight end. Bengals still putting up 33 points and 470 yards of offense. and Joe Flacco alone accounting for 342 of those yards through the air. The great, and I do mean great, Jamar Chase with 16 catches for 161 yards. T. Higgins as ever by his side, six catches of his own for 96 yards. Chase Brown, one of the NFL’s lowest rated, lowest performing running backs with a 2.5 average entering this evening. Ran for 108 yards on just 11 carries. My friends, it isn’t the what. It isn’t the losing to the Bengals or the losing on Thursday night silliness. It’s not even just the loss period. It’s it’s the how. And when I say how, I mean how did this happen? How did this defense that had taken very real, very measurable strides over the previous three weeks regress just like that in a single night? How did TJ Watt, Cam Hayward, the stars of this defense, virtually vanish? How did the entire inside linebacking crew, which we’d all been singing about from Dublin to the Browns game, just go poof? How did this secondary that was purportedly designed to take on a team like the Bengals with not one but two spectacular wide receiving threats pose absolutely no threat to anything that Cincinnati wanted to do? And by God, how did Chase Brown run for all those yards, but only against this one opponent? How? How? Mike Tomlin typically wanted to talk about the two turnovers the offense had. I’m not touching that with a 31 ft pole. Sorry. Your offense was the only reason you were even remotely in that game. your defense, your beloved defense, your defense, as well as whatever it is that Terra Austin has to do with it, vomited up the entirety of the reasons that the Steelers lost. So, I went to the players. I went to the locker room. I asked Joey Porter if maybe this secondary, you know, the coverage people thing where there’d be three of them himself, Darius Slay, of course, Jaylen Ramsay would be able to take on, you know, the mono immano challenge of both Chase and Higgins. And I asked if maybe this was too much challenge for you guys when you’re facing, you know, two guys of that caliber as opposed to just one, which you’ve been faced most of the year. No, not really. I mean, we got the guys to do it. They just got to let us play. What do you mean by that? The I mean, I I wasn’t a big fan of the call today with the with the officiating, but it is what it is. It’s football. Now, be fair here. There’s only so much Joey can say in response to that question. He’s not going to say, “Yeah, you know what? Uh, it is too much. We’re just not that good.” That’s not how defensive backs are wired to begin with. I’ll also acknowledge to some degree something else that he would bring up with me and that’s that the penalty flags against him were really tickytacky and they were and that doesn’t help but nonetheless this was terrible. I asked Alex Heismith, probably the Steelers most stout runs stopper, why there were no runs stoppers in this one and what it’ll take to have runto stoppers again. What will it take to stop the run? I mean you guys got to that point recently in Ireland last week. Yeah. I mean specifically I mean like you said this just looked like more physical get blocks and so um you know that’s where it starts. You just got to play physical get blocks. No one had answers. Nobody. Patrick Queen for once didn’t have answers. didn’t really have anything to say, including expressing his standard frustration or disgust or anything. Just said, “We need to be better.” Well, they do. And listen, I know how the nation rolls. At least I’d like to think I do after a lifetime around it. And this is all going to end up being about Tomlin, maybe to a lesser extent, Austin. And on top of that, the the weirdness about Thursday nights, I’m not into days of the week patterns. I’m not even into the more tangible short week patterns. To me, bringing that up in any context comes across as excusem for Tomlin or Austin or whoever. Zack Taylor and his staff had the same amount of time, the exact same amount of time to prepare for the Steelers as vice versa. They had the time to come up with that unreal flacko bootleg that had people throughout that stadium audibly gasping when it occurred. They had time to make a real plan. They had time to say, “Hey, what happens in the event that our three coverage people can’t handle their two other worldly wide receivers? What happens then?” They had time to hear that question, to pose it themselves, and to address it. They might not have found the right solution, but don’t tell me they didn’t have time. They had time not to stick in the cover two, cover three formations. They had time to wonder why they wouldn’t ever send more than four people after the Cincinnati backfield, meaning four up front. They had time. And you know what else? They had halfime, too. They didn’t do anything. They didn’t change a thing. And honestly, I don’t really care which one is the horse and which one’s the cart. I know that this defense doesn’t work. I know that impressing us in two out of six games isn’t good enough. I know that sometimes it’s miscommunication. Sometimes it’s somebody not understanding roles. Sometimes it’s just a lack of physical actual performance on the field. And there was plenty of that last night. Be sure of that. I’m talking about just routine missed tackles, stuff that you don’t need to be coached how to do. And I also know that I’m sorry, I’m not really thinking much about taking this football team too seriously until this stuff gets cleaned up. And it’s not going to get cleaned up until everybody involved understands the scope of the slop within which they’re currently operating. [Music] Today’s J1 Q comes from Nate who says, “DK, the Steelers did score more than 30 points.” So, you were right about that, but as if on Q, the run defense regressed to the mean. Will there be a serious debate inside the organization about the merits of stripping the ball versus ending the play? because that’s a lot of what I’m seeing on these missed tackles. Nate, I have seen the game exactly once with my own eyes live from the press box. Occasionally, I’ll glance over and look at the silent monitor that the Bengals provide, as all teams provide in their press boxes, but beyond that, I’m not going to have a great gauge for what percentage of the missed tackles were the result of a player trying to pry the ball loose. The Steelers defense hasn’t had a takeaway since Ireland. Not since that TJ Watt interception. That’s a long time for a defense that’s supposed to be founded on takeaways to go without one. And unlike the Cleveland game where they came close a half a dozen times, they weren’t even in the solar system of a takeaway in this game. They were just bad, bad, bad. So, the point I’m going to reiterate here because I feel it’s worth reiterating, everyone, maybe even yourself here with the way you’ve asked this question, Nate, is going to want to point to a single thing. Makes it easier to, you know, transfer the anger or whatever, focus the anger. That’s not going to do anything. If everyone wants to complain about Tomlin’s record on a certain day of the week, it’s not going to do a thing toward getting this defense where its players think it should be. Where a lot of people of late would say they think it should be. Is there some single one fell swoop solution to all of this? Maybe if you fire Terrell Austin and you tell Mike Tomlin, meaning you fire from above and tell Tomlin to leave his coordinator alone, you can install some. This isn’t going to happen. I could waste everybody’s time with it. It’s not going to happen. That is something that would cover a lot of different areas with one move if you or actually Art Rooney felt that was the way to go. But none of this is going to get even recognized properly unless you look at everything and you’re honest with yourself about everything. Are these schemes, the cover two, the cover three, the fourman rush, are they the right fit for this personnel? Are they the right fit for the National Football League in 2025? Are they the right fit for a given opponent? One of the things that I not liked, I loved about the games against the Vikings and the Browns was that the Steelers made very obvious but smart adjustments to those opponents. Did they fail to do that against the Bengals because of the short week? I have a hard time accepting that. Did they fail to do it because they got a little bit too full of themselves after a couple wins? Meaning the coaches? That’s possible. But you’d have to do something along the lines of what Tomlin and others on his staff did before flying over to Ireland. You’d have to take a really long hard look in the mirror. And you’d have to do it in ways that might wound the ego some. But man, you’re sure as heck not going to look in the mirror and say, “Why can’t I win on Thursdays?” I appreciate the question. I appreciate everybody listening to Daily Shot of Steelers. I would bring up the app thing, but you’re all in a terrible mood. You’re not going to download our app today. So, whatever you do, don’t email me at dkdsittsburghports.com because I know you won’t want the premium level of the app and let’s just all keep it, you know, above board. Reminder that there’s no double shot of Steeler show today because be traveling back from Cincinnati at that time. So the next anything that we do will be Monday’s Monday morning’s daily shot of Steelers. Thanks so much for listening. [Music]
This defense has become an all-consuming dilemma.

Tomlin is to loyal to Austin
I wish Mr. Rooney had balls enough to get rid of the whole coaching staff, if he truly wants to hoist another 🏆 as long as tomlin is still the coach u fans better realize that it will not be another superbowl not in Pittsburgh
…. which is the horse and which is the cart, but we all know the difference between horse manure and cow manure and BullShit,,, yesterday was BS, offense and defense. How does it happen 🤔
People in the stands were calling the plays put before they happened and even Chase said they knew exactly what was coming and the Steelers did exactly what they thought and were hoping they would do. Once again completely predicable defense. Aaron balling out is the only reason we didn't get completely embarrassed today
I mean if the defense could have just stopped one of the touchdown drives
Tomlin is now 0-9 in road games in the conference on Thursday night games. That is more than a pattern. Yes , the players on defense played bad. But why is that after playing so good the last 2 games? There is one common denominator . Tomlin. For whatever reason he never has the team ready for these games. The Scheme was terrible . The middle of the field was wide open all game and no adjustments . His stubbornness is a big part of the problem.
I am starting to worry about TJ. His stats this year are not great. He's not even going to hit double digit sacks the pace he's going. It's not all on him and i get the whole league is throwing sooner to avoid guys like TJ but man there was plenty of opportunities to get Flacco last night and no one got home
I do think part of it is Flacco, Flacco has always had the Steelers number even more than Burrow or Lamar currently. That's why Tomlin was pissed about Flacco going to the Bengals
The fact Tomlin wanted to speak on the 2 interceptions but not the defense is such a freaking joke. Defense shit the bed
DK the list of problems of this game are just inexcusable bottom line. The tires did not just go flat. The wheels fell off ran over the coaching staff hit certain players. Two picks thrown by the QB with a lead umm ball protection. Run stopping and gap integrity on second down nonexistent in first half. First down passing plays by the Bengals out schemed our defense. I'm writing it off to they did not have tape on Flacco in this offense which is probably why Tomlin is mad at old Berry of the Browns. The Bengals practice against the Packers did not matter to them. It only prepped Falcco and the offense. They wanted a win at home against the Steelers on white out night and which directly influences the AFC north standings. Let's really say what Tomlin wanted to say the two Ohio Teams coursed against the Steelers. They threw a sucker punched. Tomlin and Omar need to take this game extremely personally. When the Bungles come back to Accrisure the Steelers need to throw a haymaker and end them please Joe Burrow come back. Move on to Green Bay but do not forget what these two Ohio teams did.
If the Steelers go down this same road that they always do this year i have to imagine Tomlin is actually going to be on the hot seat man. TJ and Cam are getting old, all the other vets we picked up are getting old, Aaron will be gone and we will have no QB again. It's going to be a monumental mess up if they can't get atleast one playoff game under their belt. I think it will be way louder than last year
Is anybody TRULY surprised by this?
If so, please explain why.
It looked just like Tom Brady and Julian Edelman out there running 26 slant patterns against THE SAME DEFENSE over and over.
All while Tomlin is standing there like 'Blade' with his eyes bugged out of his head under the shades he has on despite it being night. His arms are crossed in complete befuddlement as to why PROVEN DEFENSIVE SCHEMES that led him and the Steelers to two Super Bowl appearances aren't currently working.
With Tomlin's thinly disguised Cover 2 schemes, it's like playing against the Rams GREATEST SHOW ON TURF every single week.
the remaining constant every year is Tomlin. It's tomlins fault, this happens all the time every year, nothing will change till tomlins gone.
DK I love ya, you won't miss me, but I'm checkin out for a few weeks. This team is too frustrating. I don't watch the games anyway, I just follow them and watch things like your show, but that loss broke me. I'll check back maybe if they win some of the harder games on their schedule, but otherwise I'm checking out. And I know you call bluffs on that sort of thing but trust me, I really do check out. Good luck, hope the show keeps growing
Let's not forget this team nearly lost to the Jets. The only good team they played so far is Seattle and that didn't go well. New England is not good yet, and Minnesota was all beat up, so we shouldn't be shocked by this
Not since Dick LeBeau have they had a solid, playmaking, consistent defense. I truly believe it comes down to coaching.
Let’s face it folks, they should be 3-3. Patriots beat themselves with 5 turnovers.
Steelers got real fight in them .. they squeezed Bengali at the death ..never gave up …. awesome team 😊
D has basically been bad all year–Browns dont count
Unfortunately, they didn't plan correctly for Chase or Higgins. What? Tomlin talked about the 2 turnovers as the issue? It was 1000% of the defenses' fault ➡️ they allowed 33 points, Flacco threw for a season high so far, both WR's ate, and the RB ran for over 100 yards for the first time this season. Did the defense even double-team Chase or Higgins? Tomlin should have called out the sloppy play of the defense as a whole, on the line, and the secondary without naming any specific players.
What would have been appropriate is Tomlin saying, " Although we had two turnovers on offense in which one was just a good contested play, our offense still played a solid game and kept us in it until the very end," and then gave compliments to the offensive players (the Oline, Rodgers, RB's, TEs, and WRs).
Allegedly, Mike Tomlin is obsessively in the film room all the time all week watching opponents and studying. If that's the case, then the defensive scheme would be amazing like it was against the Browns because I had no idea what the defense was going to do from play to play they look unpredictable for the first time in a long time. But then Tomlin became full of himself regarding the Bengals and underestimated them and thought that if he Blitz Flacco, that that would work, and force him to make bad passing decisions, or take sacks. I think with Joe Burrow out, and Flacco in, the Steelers can be beat again when they come to Pittsburgh.
Tomlin LIVES in his fears. That's one reason why he doesn't let defensive coaches, coach. Okay, so he called, and helped Brian Flores⭐️ initially, get another job, but knew it was going to be Flores's way💪🏽 of coaching, and NOT his, so he made sure he was one and done with the Steelers👎🏽. Flores, should have been able to keep his role🔥, along with becoming the DC over Austin.
Edit: Does anyone agree?
If Joe Flacco put up 33 points and 470 yards what in the world would Joe Burrow have done?! 50 points and 550 yards?
Definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a new outcome.
We are tired of seeing Tomlin do this and wash, rinse, repeat year after year after year.
He needs to go. No more losing to teams under .500.
we need refunds TJ Watt i will not play unless i am the hightest paid player in the NFL a no show ….
You gotta take something away..Chase, Higgins and "Jim Brown"..I'm sorry Chase Brown all had great games..Flacco looked like Marino he had a white uniform with no dirt on it!!!Totally embarrassing defensive performance!! "D"LEGENDARY… NOT!!
My take and perspective on Aaron Rodgers our offense is 25th overall in the NFL our defense is 29th over all in the NFL our total offensive yards per game is the lowest it's been since 2019 this is all about defenses not Aaron Rodgers in the grand scheme of things Aaron has 14 TDs 8 of them came vs 2 of the worst defenses in the NFL 3 came from defensive takeaways setting Aaron up with great field position the last 3 came on length of the field drives so without the defenses Aaron has thrown for 3 TDs and 6 INTs in 6 games
Our offensive total yards per game are the lowest since 2019 the next bunch of teams we play their QBs and defenses are far better than the ones we've faced previously
These QB aren't going to throw INTs and Aaron relies on bad defenses and defensive takeaway to generate points with the takeaways 24 PPG with out the takeaways 18 PPG
The players admitted that the schemes were fine. It's just, the players didn't deliver. They admitted it was their fault, so stop blaming the coaches. Coaches could tell them what to do, but they can't make them do it, and they can't go out there and do it for them!
Tomlin didn't watch last week's show 😂
Tomlin is a tired confused old man. Just lost when challenged by good offensive schemes. His defense is predictable and a pushover the way they line up in his schemes. Tomlins time is over we see it every year. Just got embarrassed early this year.
Without a pass rush we suck period. Unless we can find a way to get pressure this could get worse. Wait till we play a good team.
When is Tomlin not going to live in his fears? He’s scared of playing press man because he thinks the worst will happen every play. So instead he has every one run backwards immediately and that sets up huge runs and big YAC plays.l
I wish there was some more transparency and not just the same excuses after each game. I just want Austin to take full control of 1 game to see how much is on Tomlin.
