[Smith]: The Los Angeles Lakers have picked up the 2026-27 rookie scale team option for Dalton Knecht, a league source told @spotrac. Knecht will be on the Lakers books at $4.2M for next season.

  1. Makes sense because while he’s been bad recently, he’s shown potential to be an nba caliber rotation or at least a depth piece, unlike JHS.

    It’s smart to retain under a cost controlled contract because it helps with potentially trading him in the future, unless he comes a totally negative contract, which I doubt because he’s not that awful.

    He can easily improve his form and if he can becomes somewhat valuable, then this team friendly contract further improves his value to a considerable extent.

  6. I mean he’s old but he’s only in his 2nd year. Guards usually take the leap in their 3rd year. He has shown that he can be a flamethrower. This is a low risk, high reward contract. Both for him and the team.

  9. At this point, it is more of a team friendly contract that we are retaining Dalton. I am not sure he is worth the contract but I hope he will bounce back and play better.

  10. Still a big fan, think he’ll be a contributing NBA player – don’t believe we’ve managed his confidence well even with his current deficiencies on one side of the ball. Hope he can realise his potential as a Laker

  13. Elite trade bait..hopefully they get rid of him for a legitimate 3 and d player. Dalton doesn’t bring anything to the Lakers he horrible on defense and a streaky shooter who can’t get his own shot

  14. This makes sense. He doesn’t move the needle much as an expiring, so you have to signal that he has some value in a trade. JJ hyping up his practice, extending the contract, and then hopefully we can get him on the court with extended starter minutes which is where he does his best work, and trade him.

  17. Happy for Dalton he gets that $4.2 mill because if he doesn’t pick it up, he might not get many more NBA contracts. Definitely not a player I expected to struggle in the league.
