Rich Eisen Reacts to the Detroit Lions’ MNF Demolition of Baker Mayfield & the Buccaneers

The Detroit Lions last night taking on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to wrap up week number seven with a double header on Monday Night Football. The Seattle Seahawks take care of business against the Houston Texans. Later on, we’ll hit that um in an hour number three of this show. But as for the Detroit Lions, you know, I love talking about them. You know, I love talking about them after a win. Um because I chose them to win the NFC at the end of the day. And uh I I like being right. I like being proven correct. Um, and you mentioned that I I I I got it’s one of my favorite things. Uh, but if I’m wrong, I’ll raise my hand and say, “Hey, I’m off.” And at the end of the day, you know, they’re not even in the top uh two. They’re not even leading their division right now. Believe it or not, through seven weeks of the NFC campaign, the 41-1 Green Bay Packers are currently your one seed with the 5-2, aforementioned San Francisco 49ers sitting there. And then you’ve got the Eagles leading the NFC East at 5-2 and the Buccaneers now at 5-2 with that loss last night in Detroit. Um they lead their division um in the NFC South. And right now the Lions are sitting in at 5-2 and the five seed kind of like you know the team that they put in that position last year, the Minnesota Vikings. If you recall that last game of last year, Lions had a chance to uh win the conference, win the division, win the conference in the the final game of the season against the Vikings. They did so and the Vikings became a 14- win wildcard team that got one and done here in Los Angeles. I set all that up to say is that the Lions don’t want to be in the position of the Minnesota Vikings at the end of the day, which is top wild card team. And last night they took a large step towards not being that even though they are right now through seven weeks. That’s because they beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the only at the at the time 5-1 team in the conference. And they beat him up. And they not only beat him up, they took care of business on defense with once again, stop me if you’ve heard this story before, speaking of last season, half their defense on the back end out due to injury or in the case of Brian Branch suspended because he slapped at Juju Smith Schustster after the Kansas City Chiefs game last week in the loss in Arrowhead. That kind of lingered into this game as well on the Aman Ross St. Brown front. I’ll get to that in a second. But the defense getting it done against the in my estimation coming into week seven clear MVP through the first six weeks of the season in Baker Mayfield. They were all over him. The pass rush was getting home. And when the pass rush wasn’t getting home, the back end of the defense with names that you don’t really hear very much being mentioned. Amig Robertson. Um, Arthur Mallette. You don’t hear that name a lot, but you certainly did when he ripped the ball out of the hands, I believe, of Kate Utten when it was resting on his shoulder, coming up with an interception last night. Robertson forced a fumble. Nick Whiteside, some key pass breakups for the Detroit Lions. And that’s it. Once again, excellent coaching and deep rostering can win a day. And last night against a 5-1 Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that had just gotten Mike Evans back before losing him for the rest of the season. We’ll talk about that later on. No Bucky Irving. They do have Ibuka. They don’t have Godwin. Mayfield is down some parts, but he could not get past a Lions defense that was a getting home with a pass rush with a terrific front seven and then a bunch of guys who’s needs the name tags for the Ford Field faithful last night. So, they don’t have their coordinators from last year. That’s supposed to be a problem. They don’t have a lot of their top ranked players on the back end of their defense. That’s supposed to be a problem. Jir Gibbs takes care of it. Sets a careerh high with 218 scrimmage yards. Most by a Detroit player in a game since anybody. Ber novin. Calvin. Yeah. Week eight 2000 and 13. He had 329 yards from Jeez, it’s insane. but 218 scrimmage yards, a buck 36 on the ground, 82 in the air. First player with 130 or more rush yards and 80 or more receiving yards in a game since Saquon Barkley in 2019. You thought he did it twice against the Rams last year, didn’t you? I was about to say, no, it was in 2019. The only Lions players with 200 or more scrimmage yards in a prime time game now are named Jir Gibbs and the two guys you mentioned, TJ. Okay. Barry and Calvin. That’s correct, sir. And Barry was there last night. It’s a good list to be on. Right. 78 yd rushing touchdown was the longest of his career. Yeah, it felt good to have him in fantasy. And then I’m on Ross St. Brown. Son of God. Now again, remember when I came on the air on Tuesday, one week ago today, talking about the loss in Kansas City for the Lions, that that game turned on a fourth down attempt on just inside the Kansas City portion of the 50. Okay. And they go for it in the second quarter of that game. And G and Aman Ra can’t connect. The Chiefs then hop on the football, score right before halftime, score right after halftime, and that game completely flipped. Well, you heard Joe Buck and Troy Aman say over and over again in the first quarter of that game that of last night that Aman Ross St. Brown had steam coming out of his ears all week long that he sent a text to Goff apologizing for not catching the ball and Goff responded by essentially saying, “Hey man, I didn’t put the ball completely on you either.” And Buck was saying all week long the Lions organization was saying they can’t wait to see what Aman Ross St. Brown is going to do when he gets back on the field. And sure enough, six catches for 86 yards and the receiving touchdown to start it all off before Gibbs ripped it all off after that. I’m on Ross St. Brown leads the NFL with seven receiving touchdowns this year. Now, so on doing his thing, the defense is doing its thing. And if Jir Gibbs continues to do his thing, you’re going to you’re going to see the Lions win a lot more. And it appears the head coach believes it’s only just the beginning for Jim Gibbs. Felt like this was coming. You know, you felt like that that this has been building and you know, as he gets in better shape and starts getting his feet under him, you know, starts getting a feel of it, starts breaking some tackles, you just feel every week has gotten closer and closer and um tonight was the night where it just he busted one of these out of there and and there’ll be no looking back. I mean, I I just I think he’s just going to continue to do this. So, our old line um did a good job, you know, in areas of of getting him to the second level. Certainly, we got to continue to improve there, but man, that’s all you got to do. If you can get him to the second level, he’ll do the rest. You know, we’re fortunate cuz our old line can open some holes in it. We have receivers that block, so the rest is up to him one-on-one with the safety. Yep. That said, plus one, all of it. No Kirby Joseph out with a knee. No Terry Arnold out with a shoulder. No GJ Reed. He’s on IR. Brian Branch suspended as I mentioned. Baker Mayfield a 66.1 passer rating anyway. Four sacks, 20 quarterback pressures, 12 passes defensed. That’s the most by Alliance team in 23 years. That’s what they did last night. Highly impressive W. Yeah, for sure. In all of that regard, you remember also too, just quick before we throw to break and Albert Preer is going to join us. Remember when Jamir Gibbs got drafted? Yeah. People questioned why they Oh, you did. They ever took a back that high. Yeah, dude. Especially since they already had David Montgomery Knuckles. Yep. Why do you need a Sonic when you already got Knuckles? Certainly when you spend that money in the in free agency. And all I heard that night from that Thursday night of the draft to the Friday from a bunch of my guys on the set and from behind the scenes elsewhere, all I heard is the Lions jumped the line on a ton of teams on Jir Gibbs. Yeah, you told us that. They jumped the line on a ton of teams on Jir Gibbs. And boy, do the Lions look smart. Another guy that they drafted in the first round that everyone was questioning was one of our glue guys, Jack Campbell out of Iowa. All right. How’s he looking right now? So on that 78 yard touchdown, Chris, he just ran straight up the gut. And it was the first time in a while someone else reminded me of Chris Johnson. Remember those ones Chris Johnson runs where Gus Gus would just yell speed because there was nothing else to say. That’s what that run was like. Well, uh, Jared Goff was Jared Goff was talking about that run after the game and and, um, you know, if you could see in the replay, he put his he put his hands up like touchdown like Lane Kein back in the day when he was calling plays for Alabama. Roll it. Those those long ones are fun to watch and I feel like I got the best seat in the house just to like see him hit the hole and then and then just like take off. And there I don’t know how many safeties in the league could catch him. So, as soon as he gets there, it’s it’s over. You know, he’s gone. And um it felt like last year the Titans run, you know, the 70 yard run. It was very similar where it’s just like him on the safety and it’s over. Um but yeah, it’s it’s pretty cool. He’s he’s he’s dang fast and um it’s fun to watch. They have a buy now, so all of those defenders can come back from either suspension or injury. We’ll see what happens. And then after that home game with Minnesota at Washington, who the heck knows what’s going on with them, right before a Sunday night visit to Philadelphia. What a big huge game in the NFC standings that is going to be before they finish up on Thanksgiving against Green Bay. Following week against Dallas, they visit the Rams out here. Another big game in the NFC. The rest of their division matchups around a home date with an Aaron Rogers visit back to Detroit. That’s some fun, mustsea television with the Detroit Lions playing like this and Dan Campbell just being as entertaining as ever, coaching his ass off, and his team just being full of grit. Fun stuff. Hey, you made it all the way to the end. Thanks for that. Check us out every single day streaming live on Disney Plus and the ESPN app 12 to 3 Eastern.

  1. Lions played well bit man this felt like the football gods picked a side. The number of things that went the lions way was unlike anything I have ever seen and it wasn't even like bad ref calls, just like the literal football football gods said "you know…its been an eternity since we let abything go the lions way". Congrats lions fans.

  2. I don’t want to hear anymore about Baker Mayfield MVP. What I saw last night against the Lions forget about his on the field performance, his sideline persona was that of a loser. It’s been a while since I’ve seen a more hangdog Quarterback. Crying on the sidelines about an ugly Lions field goal that just happened to bounce good.
I’ve never ever seen Mahomes projecting that kind of negativity.

  3. Bucs loss , that's all …just like Lions loss last week…so Lions
can bounce back ,but Bucs get all the flack for losing a game?
note: Bucs are 5-2 Lions are 5-2…they loss last week ,we loss
    this week…blah, blah…go Bucs😅😅😅

  4. If someome would have said after 2 weeks the panthers would be 1.5 games behind the 1 seed after 7 weeks, we all would havw laughed, even panther fans 😂

  5. 4-1-1 over 5-2 is a questionable mathematical anomaly. The league counts a tie as half-win and half-loss; that is a fallacy. It should count as neither – on team has five wins and one team does not.

  6. Is now going to get to the point where opposing fans are gonna stop everything they're doing if they're not somehow paying attention to the draft when it's on at the time JUST to start paying close attention to whoever Brad Holmes drafts and whether they know the player or not they just going to start getting instantly MAD AF because they know he's going to be a star without even knowing the player yet 😂😂😂.. that's just how elite Brad Holmes drafting is.. he's DEFINITELY The best GM in the league.. the most strategic and the best drafting, HANDS DOWN..

  7. Our offense is still not fluid. We’ve been leaving so many points on the board all season. You can see how frustrated MCDC is during the post game locker room speeches bcs he knows we can be soooo much better offensively. I hope we can work out the issues during the bye week 🦁

  8. Haters are gonna hate but give credit to Baker and the Bucs. I will forever defend my team. Baker has still been playing out of his mind despite all these injuries. Great football teams find ways to win, and that’s what we did with the Seahawks and 49ers. We had a gauntlet stretch and still fought hard. Most teams would kill to be 5-2, looking at you Jets and Dolphins. Yes this was a tough loss, but every quarterback has bad games. Look at Josh Allen, he had a terrible game against the Patriots but he’s still one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and he will bounce back. Buccaneers aren’t going anywhere. Baker is gonna continue to Baker and most people will doubt us which I love. The more people doubt us, the more we can prove them wrong. 👨‍🍳🏴‍☠️

  9. I know this post is about Lions/Bucs, but I'm still shocked there's nothing on Ohtani's performance being mentioned on his show (at least looking at post on YouTube).

  10. Being from Beautiful Portland Or. Iam a Seahawks fan! Go Hawks! But iam also a Detroit fan because they have been loosers for so long! LA thought they were getting over on Detroit by giving them Goff an 2 first round picks. (GIBBS and LaPorta) 😂🤣😂😘

  11. The good news is the Lions are going to be getting back most of their D in the next few weeks. Hopefully all in time for Washington & Philly

  12. Best comment of the night was from Troy Aikman, "We did many Thanksgiving games here and it was like a morgue. It is great to see the turn around and how this place is rocking."

  13. Eisen…Lions have a next man up mentally that is different than most teams…they play so " brutal" that it"s only " next man up,
they lost more players last night because of that brutal mindset
…I'll stick with my Bucs and our loss over that any day…we're more than next man" up…we care more for the one down…by
that brutal mentality Lions won't have any left for playoffs…so
I'll keep my Bucs any day!

  14. 8:58 while we’re on the topic of 1st round picks. How bout the 1st round pick that started it all. Penei Sewell moving lines and blocking several guys at once. What a game!

  15. Yeah missing every starter in the secondary while also missing backups (Maddox and Dorsey) then having Ya-Sin go down in game. That DB group played their hearts out last night.

  16. Kudos to the Lions for playing well. But, it's impossible to be competitive especially on the road when every game changing call goes against you. That was one of the worst refered game in NFL history. Its obvious they made up for the Kansas City game. Bucs had four successful plays reversed that were called on the field, and two should not have been unreviewable. Mike Evans had a player with his arm around his neck and drapped on his back on a blatent PI. Which resulted in a season ending injury. The referees made sure that the Bucs could not come back in what was mostly at one score game until the end. That's amazing in this day and age the technology we have to put up with this b***

  17. So what you're saying Rich is the Lions are the best team in in the NFL (that was the byline that made me click on the video) despite being dominated by the Chiefs the week before and the Lions had Brian Branch in that game and the Chiefs certainly didn't come close to allowing any Lion 200 yards from scrimmage! Then as a sign of ultimate disrespect, you leave the Chiefs off your top ten 10 list after dismantling the Lions because you're stuck on their record when they're 3-3 and still you put the Lions at number 2. The Chiefs passed the "eye test", but somehow you didn't think so. I like you Rich and I enjoy watching your show, but sometimes your arguments are flawed.
