Scratching a player is like skipping classes in college.
You tell yourself, just once.
But once the dam breaks open…..
To me, this just means they are planning on keeping him up all year. This is sorta the norm for rookies nowadays.
I like Cowan. He’ll be a good player. He does some nice things….he also looks like a smaller player who gets pushed around easily. I think he’s better served developing in the AHL right now. I’m fine if they want to keep him up a bit longer to give that taste but I think its a mistake if hes still in the NHL two weeks from now.
Seems like a good move. He had a tough game against the Rangers and I think playing against Seattle was a good show of faith from the coaches, but he could use a mental reset.
Should do this for some regulars as well.
Actually the kid needs a health break. Rangers game he gets high sticked and the Seattle game he gets cross in the mouth….common denominator???? No other leaf came to the rookies rescue. So unless the leafs change their paper tiger image this kid will get cheap shots until someone decides enough is enough
You can play on the top line and not get first line minutes. You can be on the roster and not be a full-time player.
It’s an interesting approach to his development but I like it. I think he could have played for the Marlies for a couple months first and it would have been cool too, but they obviously see the value he can bring to this team and want to acclimate him to playing with/against the best players in the world.
I think coach makes a good point, but I’ve been happy with Cowan so far.
I think he’s NHL ready and should stay up this year
Pens have been doing this with their rookies this year too and it’s working out well. It makes sense. Good call on Berube’s part here.
love this quote.
rookies like him shouldnt be forced into a lineup night after night, especially when they hit bumps or skids. pull them out, let them watch a bit and reset.
adding that bit at the end about being in a good spot….. 100% a message for cowboy to say “hey, when you read this…you still good, we still have faith”
great players coach.
I don’t mind this. It’s a gruelling season. I actually am surprised they don’t do more load management in general. Goalies too basically never play 65+ games.
It’s one of my issues with Marleau when he was here.
If you keep an eye out for him you’ll notice they manage Cowan’s minutes closely. He gets most of his minutes in the first half of the game.
If it’s a large lead (like Nashville) he’ll get some more shifts in the third, but if it’s a tight game like the Rangers or Kraken, his shift count drop offs more
I really like this approach, and it does bode well for him sticking around long term
