Mark Masters: Stolarz clears the air after calling out Nylander, Leafs

Following Saturday’s overtime loss, Anthony Stolarz called out his team for an inconsistent start to the season. As part of his criticism, the Leafs goalie singled out William Nylander for what he perceived to be a poor effort on the Seattle Kraken’s game-winning goal.
After the dust settled, the goalie pulled the star winger aside to talk about what happened.
“It’s all good,” Nylander assured reporters on Monday. “Look, we’re teammates. He’s a great guy. There’s nothing that we need to, you know, talk about here. He talked to me after and it’s all good. It’s been no issue since.”
Thing is , with the history of how this team is, they might have a bit of grit the next few games, heck maybe weeks but then it’ll disappear entirely. I hope this was maybe more of a sharper point that gets driven through the team especially with Chief and your best goaltender calling you out in the media.
He also should’ve called out his so called capitan who floated back and watched the whole play. But that’s just leafs hockey.
Stolaz had a .857 save percentage and his gsax was below average. Don’t think he should be calling anyone out in that position to the media
i just watched the goal… doesnt look like low effort to me.. he got beaten by speed because he was skating backward but the effort was there afterward to try to recover.
maybe he had to be better and not get caught, but it wasnt a low effort situation imo.
maybe they should start small. for example by not constantly pushing guys into him?
People are gonna focus on the media topic in the headline, but there’s a lot of interesting response stuff in this article itself, not all about those two.
Namely:
stolarz gets essentually called out by Berube for publicizing what should be a conversation that happens all the time behind the scenes.
stolarz calls himself out for not making the save.
carlo gets called out by berube (lightly) for not marking his box out guy in time and as a result pushed him into Stolarz.
Stolarz has no issues with the team response on him being run prior to that.
Every Leaf response pretty much in this article also basically tells the media to stay in their lane on the questions for the Nylander stolarz stuff lol. In particular, the Matthews and Nylander responses make it sound like the call out in general isnt a big deal and this kind of stuff is common in a dressing room, they just find it silly they have to address the media about it
This should be a good thing for the leafs. At least the jays have a shot at the chip and unlike the nhl, we’ll all be rooting for Toronto there.
This team has zero heart. That’s always been the issue and the players that had it got traded. Now you have a captain who’s as good as a presence as a bag of raisins, and no grit so every other team knows they can just walkover the leafs.
What captain stays back and watches your goalie just get trampled after what happened last season?
Pathetic. Nothing has changed with this team. This is why we’re a joke in the league. Now marner will win a cup here just like every other leaf that has left.
Leafs picked the softest cuddliest player to be their Captain. You cannot wear the C if you don’t play a 200 ft game.
600+ game plus Nylander taking criticism from Stolarz with his barely 150 games… he’s at most played like 34 games in a season. Not even half a season in his decade in the league.
Nylander who has helped the team get to division 1st and 9 playoff appearances. Most of the time also considered a top performer in the playoffs.

I can imagine what that conversation looked like.
Stolarz: “be better”
Nylander: “Stop crying bro”
