Mason McTavish, Leo Carlsson react pace of Carolina Hurricanes in 4-1 loss | Ducks Postgame

a little bit different game tonight compared to Tuesday. What do you think went wrong or went right tonight for you guys? Um, yeah. I mean, I think, you know, ultimately it comes down to I think we didn’t really capitalize on our chances. Um, we had a lot of great looks. Um, you know, credit to their team. They played well. Goalie played well. Um, but we had some good looks. I don’t think we have to get too down on ourselves, but um, you know, that’s a that’s a really good hockey team over there. But um I feel like we uh we held in there and uh we gave ourselves a chance to win. How much does their style of play sort of just dictate how this entire game goes? Yeah, a little bit. I feel like it’s more apparent and especially in their building. Um but I mean yeah, they’re they’re a great hockey team like I said and um you know they’re very create a lot of wear and tear by just you know shooting a lot of pucks, skating around, always in your face. So, um, you know, it’s a good style they play and it’s working for them and, um, yeah, it was, uh, I don’t know if it, you know, I guess at the start of the first first half, I’d say it kind of dictated, but, I feel like we kind of had a good push and late in the second there. Had had a lot of great looks and like I said, just didn’t capitalize. So, against Pittsburgh, more time and space on the power play to work with. What What kind of was so difficult with the power play tonight? Um, yeah. I mean, similar to their five on five play, I mean, they’re they’re just always in your face, sticks, bodies, always in lanes. Um, you know, I think the way to beat it is we had a couple looks um, you know, bang bang plays that, you know, that’s they’re they’re prone to give those up when they’re that aggressive. And, um, really, like I said, it just comes back to back to not capitalizing on those on those looks. Mentioned that you did generate those looks. Does that give you confidence going into this road trip that you know you can compete with teams like this and you can those chances? Yeah, I think so. Um, you know, I think that game, you know, obviously they with the style they play, they’re normally going to outshoot their their opponent. Um, but like I said, we had we had our looks and um it could have could have went our way. Um, you know, there’s there’s 82 games. You don’t want to get two down, but um, you know, I think I think we held in there for sure. And did you like the emotional response there? like you were involved at the end of the second period from from your Yeah. No, that’s great. I mean, especially early early in the season shows the guys are, you know, super super glued together here. We got a great group. Everybody loves each other, which is which is awesome. Very grateful. But we have a, you know, awesome locker room here. So, um, you know, it’s something we can build on for sure. Another game where you guys started down, but, you know, how do you change that going into this road trip and set off on the right foot? Um, yeah. I mean, I don’t know. I guess score the first one. Um, no. I mean, I don’t know. I mean, that’s How many games have we lost given up the first goal? Is that four? Four. Yeah. Yeah. I don’t know. I guess warm up better. I don’t know. Um, I’m not too sure. And obviously with just the way they play, how much does their style sort of dictate how you guys are going out there? Uh, I mean, we knew they was going to play fast. Uh, but yeah, our our breakouts was was not, you know, ideal first period. they played good for 10 minutes maybe in the second period but we yeah couldn’t keep it the whole game still though for as as good of a team as they are to kind of hang with them as you did is that going to give you a little boost you know knowing that that’s another level that this team can get to that there’s still things to work for yeah both there I mean I knew like we knew that we’re a good team but uh yeah they were better today um feel like we’re going to be yeah more ready in the future for those type of teams too uh so yeah looking looking forward to that the margins are super thin they were able to capitalize on a couple of the mistakes you guys made. Um, and you guys weren’t unfortunately. I’m sure that’s kind of the level that you guys are striving to be one day is being able to capitalize more on those mistakes that the team makes. Yeah, exactly that, too. I mean, we just got to, you know, uh, don’t do the mistakes more often or like Yeah. Yeah. that often that they this game. Uh, yeah, like they’re a good team, so we’re going to score off that. Um, yeah. Said like that’s goal for us too, you know, like to be that dominate against other team. So, yeah. when the game is going as it is, you know, do you kind of just take it on your shoulders like, “Hey, I got to make something happen here.” And you kind of do that with that goal? Uh, yeah, a little bit. I mean, yeah, like don’t don’t really think like that. I just think like, you know, to to try and score every shift. Uh, but uh, yeah, it was a good a good one to get it to, you know, like the the one goal there, but yeah, wasn’t enough today. Does that kind of show how much uh, Ken brings to that line where he could work on the boards and get the puck to you in space in the neutral zone? Yeah, he’s so good there. Yeah, you know, playing playing in the in in the league for a while, so he’s really smart. Uh so yeah, like playing with him. Leo, what did you work on in the summer then in the training camp to get off to the start that we’re seeing the guy we’re seeing play four games? Boring answering everything really every summer. Uh I’m at that age where I can, you know, build like build a lot of muscle but still, you know, keep my skills. So the focus is is just to get better at at everything. Do you feel stronger? Have you noticed the work paying off? Yeah, I think so. Um I mean, yeah, I hope so, too. I mean, the work I put in this summer is a lot of work. So, uh, yeah, I thought it was for sure. Final score indicated, what would it have taken to turn this around? Well, we had a good stretch there in the second. We got a little more motion in our game and more involvement with our speed. Um, but uh, hey, they’re a good hockey team because they uh, I I don’t know if I’ve seen better sticks in a game. I don’t know how many times they took the puck away from us cleanly, neatly, and turned it into something. But that was a relentless performance on uh how to play with your stick and in the puck area in the battle areas and uh that’s what we want to get to. But uh that was a demonstration of uh how to do it correctly. Is it sort of like a teaching moment game where you say that’s the level that we can and should aspire to? Well, we want to make sure that uh you know we’re we could have been a tougher route. Um but uh you know you got some games when you’re looking at an opponent it’s like hey we got to be a we got to play the right way and we got to play a perfect game and uh you know we’ll talk about tomorrow but we can learn from us as well but you know we can’t be satisfied. What do you make of the emotional response from your team especially at the end of the second period there? Well, it was, you know, we had some momentum going there at the end of that period and going into it with, you know, a couple of breaks, a couple great opportunities and uh and uh, you know, just guys sticking together, you know, a little bit of hockey there. Leo, was with a couple of good rushes, including that goal. He also had the crossbar. I mean, what have you just seen from him in these first few games? Just overall, you see him have the puck more than I than we saw in camp. And I thought he’s uh he’s working hard. He’s uh his usefulness or his use of his stick has been better and uh he’s sustaining pucks and his speed is lethal. Um so he’s been he’s been effective. How much of that would you say comes from playing with Krider and Corin, two guys that can help him get the puck more often? Uh well I I think that tonight I thought he had some good speed. Um had some tough luck. Um, but at the same time, uh, you know, I think he’s going to be just improving at his at a good pace and I I think that, uh, you know, he plays a lot of minutes, important minutes for us, so we we need him to be a factor. Are you looking forward to the road trip? No, it’s what we’re going to be. Our schedule’s all, you know, we’re going to be busy. So, it’s a uh whatever’s going to be coming, we got to be welcoming it and uh and ready for the next one because it’s a uh you know, we got some tough games on that trip, but certainly uh you know, let’s let’s be excited about one at a time. You know, the first goal in every game so far. Is are there something that needs to change off the hop for the guys or do you feel like they’re still coming out, right, and just coming on the wrong end of stuff? Yeah, I think it’s uh you know, I think we’re ready to start games. I think that uh maybe we’re hesitant a little bit, but I you know I think that uh you know we’re uh they’re all different kind of goals that have gone in. So it’s like uh it’s but they came out in first shift and dictated the way the game was going to be played and and uh that was a kind of a you know an indication that we had to you know kill it right there early enough and that was but that’s what happens when you’re you’re you’re ready to play. Really packed schedule coming up for you guys on the road. What are you looking to kind of carry over from these last two games into this road trip? Well, I think uh over four games I I I I didn’t mind our game, so today I didn’t I wasn’t crazy about it. Um the stretches last game, we’re okay, but uh I think that uh it’s a work in progress, but I still think that uh I’m looking forward to getting to a standard of play and expecting us to play at that level game in game out. And uh when we get there, I’ll let you know.
