[Stroupe] Mahomes personal trainer talks PFF over recent criticism of their system’s Mahomes performance grades.
October 21, 2025
PFF seriously gave Geno Smith a higher PFF performance grade than Patrick yesterday, that should result in PFF being shut down and disavowed permanently 🤦♂️

Interesting share, thanks. Excellent analysis from his trainer
Stop talking about PFF. It’s a worthless measurement that is used to generate engagement. The more we talk about how bad it is the more engagement and incentive they have to publish crap.

Seems like an odd role for a trainer.
Yeah after seeing Geno getting a higher grade, I will no longer give a damn about PFF ratings again at any position
Word.
Wow, this is actually really interesting.
Time to go rewatch a bajillion hours of Mahomes highlights.
I see no lies here. All things we know – Bobby just articulated it.
Pretty much on the money, would be curious to see PFF’s response.
“The thing that they don’t know about Patrick’s recovery from his ankle sprain is that we’ve since optimized the lateral head of tibia for rotation in a manner of which most athletes I’ve worked with have only been able to get around 75% power on the the Falkner dorsomimal flexion power test, whereas Pat is actually the first athlete we’ve ever seen get OVER 100% on, and that’s post-injury.
This all comes from separate binomial rotation of the joint, which Pat has actually been training with me since 7th grade, but he’s first athlete I’ve seen that has yet to reach a plateau. One of the keys to his success is training isometric pulse deficit split squats blind folded.”

Not even sure what PFF is. Not going to look it up. Sounds about as useful as ESPN power rankings. Do we truly care that “our” QB ranks higher/lower in some subjective evaluation ostensibly meant only for fans?
PFF mostly works for season long stats. For single games, it is often useless. Btw, great insight by Stroupe. He dissected the whole subject perfectly.
Unpopular opinion, I’m not upset with his low PFF passing grade against the Raiders. He had at least 1 turnover worthy throw. Guess what? That throw was extremely similar to the pick 6 against the Jags and the Raiders tech got him on that play… We got lucky he didn’t make the catch. PFF score will punish him for turnover worthy plays, and imo they should imo.
However, the grades do not necessarily mean one QB is better than the other (lots of times it does correlate but not 100%). I feel like ppl are getting this mixed up and are getting upset over it. PFF grades have some pros and cons, it’s not the end all be all. It’s one extra tool to help assess QB play (again I know there’s cons, PFF doesn’t know the play, etc). Similar to ESPN QBR, it’s not an amazing stat but it has pros and cons in assessment. GENERALLY, Mahomes has scored extremely well in PFF and ESPN QBR. Mahomes did have at least 1 turnover worthy play (similar to his pick 6 against the Jags, which honestly help contribute to the loss!!!). He got lucky and that’s okay. It’s a grading tool, it’s not necessarily telling us who’s better or not. Ppl saying Geno scored better so it concludes he played better are totally missing the point imo. PFF would be the first to tell ya Geno ain’t better than Mahomes. Imo ppl need to chill and not get so defensive.
PFF says Mahomes is the 19th best QB in the league, but we all know there are at least 25 GM’s and owners around the league that would love to have him. Something is broken with the PFF grading system. There is no way to justify giving Geno Smith a higher grade in that game.
Bobby can be a little much at times but he’s right on here.
Earlier in his career some people tried to nickname Mahomes “the outlier” because he breaks all statistical models. That is the nickname that should have stuck.
Lets not leak our secrets now…
Interesting that he’s calling out his inconsistency and tendency to be uncomfortable while throwing deep in a standstill position. Seems like that would be a concern as he gets older and less mobile.
Great break down on why not to pay any mind at all to pff lol. It’s all based off of things you can measure while mahomes is doing things that you can’t measure and doing them better than anybody.
Why is it taking so long for everyone to figure out PFF is trash? It’s never been useful. Coaches don’t use it by any means.
