When Will the Blackhawks Get the RECOGNITION They’ve Earned? | CHGO Blackhawks Podcast
It’s mailbag Tuesday on CHGO Blackhawks. When will the other Blackhawks get respect? It is our annual time to discuss Chelsea Dagger and a whole lot more coming up next on CHGO Blackhawks. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Hello. Welcome into the CHDO Blackhawks podcast presented by Bet 365. Download the Bet365 app. Use the code CHGO365 when you sign up. Whatever the moment, it’s never ordinary at Bet 365. I’m Jay Zawaski. That’s Mario Turbosi. Sarah’s over there running the show, learning how to spell courtesy. Steven’s over there doing stuff, making sure we’re not screwing anything up. Start the show that way. We had a pre-show discussion. I could end it right now. See, this is this is a fun thing, though. Everyone show everyone. This is our mailbag question to the fans. They can put it in the chat. What is the word that you can’t spell that you should be able to and and do all your all your best efforts to spell it in the chat, too. Don’t Sarah said courtesy. You said restaurant. Restaurant. I can’t spell definitely. Cincinnati for Steve. How often are you typing Cincinnati? Are you a Reds blogger or a subpar Chile blogger? This is one or the other. You would write Cincinnati. Cincinnati. Yeah. Let us know in the chat. What’s the word you can’t spell and we’ll try to decipher what word you’re talking about. Do it without looking at your keyboard, too. Just try to spell it the way you spell it and we’ll see how it goes. Everybody’s got one. Uh, every Yeah, that’s definitely is the one for me. It can never get it right and it always looks wrong. And Grammarly, I have Grammarly on my computer. Like, really? Still, I still had to put the green underline under this, you idiot. They’re enabling me. Grammarly is enabling me and I appreciate it. Well, thanks for being here. We appreciate you all being here. Do us a favor. Hit that like button. It’s the thumbs up button right by the uh play button there on your YouTube page. Make sure you are subscribed to our YouTube page as well. And if you’re uh a podcast listener, we love you, too. Make sure you’re following or subscribed on your favorite app. We got some answers already. Grace Miller can’t spell tomorrow with two M’s and two Rs. What’s Anthony saying? Pelony. Pelony. Yeah. Pelony. You know, paly. Pelony. I don’t know what that is. Uh, young dangle god. Resign versus resign. Yes. Yes. There there have many times people have asked uh you you too have asked the Blackhawks to resign Patrick Kane and they tried. Char. Oh, see Charlie the Bang guy. Another one I can’t do is separated. Separated is good. Febru February from Samuel. Yeah. February. What is Anthony trying to say though? I really don’t. P A P E L A N Y. Pelony. Pelony. Pel. Pelon. Painy. Pellainy. I don’t know. Plenty. Clearly it’s not penalty. I think he’s going for penalty. Still not getting it. Penalty. Melancholy from Cory. Government. Government governanatorial. This is the best show we’ve ever done. Uh Grace, by the way, it’s her birthday. Happy birthday to uh Grace in the chat. And it’s also Ryan Green’s birthday. So, happy birthday to Ryan Green. Wow. Seems like every day someone’s celebrating a birthday. It’s one of my favorite Bobley observations of all time. All right, we’re going to get to your mailbag questions. We got a bunch. They’re from our uh dieards this week because there’s a lot and we haven’t done a mailbag every week for a little while here. So, if you want to get your questions answered, the best way to do it is to become a diehard and get those questions in on our diehards only discord. All chto.com/join is the place to go. Or you can scan that QR code that’s on your screen right now and uh get uh set up as a diehard. And by the way, I’ve been playing uh NHL EASHL with some of the dieards over the last few nights. I I saw the uh the chats in the Die Hard Discord last night. Uh, so the 8:00 p.m. start time doesn’t work for me cuz that’s that’s my daughter’s uh start of her bedtime. She’ll figure it out. Yeah. Yeah. If you guys ever play at 1:00 in the morning, that’s my video game time. That happens too, believe it or not. Uh, me and Dead Hawk always up at 1:00 a.m. playing NHL together. had a very comical moment uh which really summarizes my NHL experience where have a nice move forehand backhand hit the post then I get destroyed along the boards and then an EA glitch happens and I fall flat on my face unprovoked and they captured that on video in the chat which is pretty funny. So uh anyway, good times in the Discord. So become a die hard for access to all that stuff. All right, shall we? Sarah, is the mailbag definitely ready? Yeah. All right, let’s go. Uh Wendy City Hockey these are courtesy of of Discord. Yes. says, “Uh, we know the vibes are so high in San Jose. Just kidding. When will national media start realizing that the vibes aren’t in San Jose and the vibes are great in the Windy City 16game losing streak for the Sharks?” Yeah, that’s that’s dating back to last season. Yep. 16 in a row. Lost the last 16 games. Uh, four points if I’m looking correctly. four points in their last 16 games. Uh and you have the head coach of your team saying, “I would trade one of my children for a win.” His children uh for a win. Yeah. Um I I think well I think it was very evident the game on TNT against St. Louis was a tide turning uh event for the narrative around the Chicago Blackhawks. And as long as they keep playing this way and they keep, you know, it doesn’t even have to be wins, just those are nice obviously. Um, but as long as they keep playing this style of hockey that they’re in games, they’re competitive, they have guys that can have really good uh moments. Bard looks like a a new version of himself, an improved version of himself. Frank Nazar has superstar capabilities. Um, you know, you got a guy a a lot of eyes on what young players like Sam Renzel and Ardum Levchenov can do. Spencer Knight has been amazing to start the season. Like, you have those guys grabbing people’s attention with their play night in and night out. It’s just going to slowly continue to build on, at least for this season and moving forward, what that TNT blowout of the Blues uh started to do. And it’s it’s funny like I’m seeing a lot of Sharks fans online being like, “Oh, you’re comparing Baddard’s third year to Celibbrini’s second year.” It’s just like, “Okay, well, what were you all doing last year?” You know, talking about Bard’s second season. It’s it’s open game on online in the in the fan community, you know? It’s it’s there’s a lot of uh receipt cashing going on early on in in this this year with with Blackhawks fans and and Sharks fans and and I’m I’m loving it as an outside observer. The thing for me is like why does it have to be Badard versus Celabbrini? They’re both you need enemies, but they’re both really good players. Like I understand the Levino Demodv thing because one was chosen over the other, right? So there was a decision made. Sure. Celabbrini was a no doubt number one overall pick. Connor Badar was a no doubt number one overall pick and I look Cabbrini is going to be really good. It’s almost saying like would you rather have going through the dynasty years would you rather have Jonathan Taes or Patrick Kane. They’re different players with different skill sets. They’re going to provide different things to their teams. You had them both. They’re both really good. But I I do think since Wendy City wrote that question which I think the date was the 16th or something. It was a couple days ago. Um, you have seen a shift from Sharks negativity to Hawks positivity. It has definitely flipped and you mentioned the Blues game. Obviously, that was the start, but then the win over the Ducks and then there has been the comments from Warsovski, which I mentioned, I give up one of my children and then he has to apologize and then uh Will Smith basically is like, well, I’m just going to get mine when the coach tells him to play a certain way. And then you’ve got the unfortunate scoreboard message which you can find on your own. Our friends at what addressed it if you want to find it. All the like kind of fumbles that we’ve seen the Hawks having over the last few years now the Sharks are having and I think people are really noticing it. They are really starting to notice now that the Sharks are well they’re really not quite as fun as they seem. Uh Mlin Cabbrini’s uh getting Zapruder filmed in his body language. That did I will say that did look like a hostage video. It sure did. Yeah. Just like standing just can’t wait to get out of there. I’ve I’ve been told uh that’s what secondyear players do. Uh they want to leave their town as fast as possible. Right. Well for the Vancouver Canucks, oddly enough. Mhm. Yeah. Um well and and you know I think uh a lot of people looked at what the Sharks did this off season and based it off of what they did last season, which was finish nine points behind the Blackhawks. Uh, and they were like, “Wow, look at all these. They got a lot of NHL players. Like, they’re gonna be more competitive.” Did you see the NHL players? They got a lot of castoffs. Yeah. What a a lot of former Blackhawks. One good enough not to be a Blackhawk. Yes. Yeah. I just uh Yeah. I I I I think I think there was a lot of um piling on that people liked to do to Baddard last year. And the anticip Well, there’s a word I can’t say. probably can’t spell it either. Anti-thesis. Um the the opposite of like the piling on Bard was the elevation of Will Smith and and Mlin Celibbrini. So you kind of got both ends of the coin and now the coin’s flipped. Yeah. And now I think I think very quickly we’re going to see not that people are going to pile on CBrini outside of the Blackhawks fan community, which I’m not opposed to them doing. Uh, like I said, reap what you sew in a in a fan community. But I think I think a lot of people in national media that I’ve, you know, different podcasts I’ve listened to, when they mention the Sharks, they’re like, “Gh, yeah, things are bad.” And I was just like, “Yeah, what happened to all the Flowers and Roses you were tossing at them last year? Yeah, things are bad. They were the worst team in the league last year and they were bad last year and they didn’t get better.” Yeah. Well, I think see the the Hawks getting bard immediately made expectations bigger and there’s more spotlight on the Hawks. They get the Winter Classic and look terrible on it. There have been more opportunities for the Hawks to look bad in front of people than there have been for the Sharks and that’s part of it too. Uh speaking of vibes, we got to share the photos from Blackhawks social media today. Uh apparently the trip to Florida, the young players, cuz it’s not just the rookies. Nazar is dressed up and Slagger’s dressed up. The charter flight needed some pilots. They they they went with the Top Gun look and is it top like Okay, I say Top Gun, but then I look at Arty and it’s the Top Gun logo World War I flying ace. You know what they look like? Ardam Lipov. They look like bed Charlie. That’s what they look like. That’s true. And there’s those scarves. Frank Nazar with the 67. Yeah, the details of the of the flight suits uh are are awesome. It’s just a tribute to Michael Fique. That’s what I think it is. That that must be what it is. That’s what the whole thing is. But see, the Hawks are having fun. They’re bonding. This is what we were being sold about the Sharks last year. But the difference is I think the Hawks will have more than 52 points or whatever it was they had last year. They’re on pace for what was it? 94. 94. Yeah, Sharks are on pace for like 12. So, I’ll take the over on that. Yeah, I have more than 12. Yeah, they got a chance to get their first first win of the season uh tonight against the Islanders, but uh don’t guarantee that that’s going to happen. Yeah, it’s it’s a lot of fun to see this team and and these players in Chicago starting to feel good, starting to I think it’s it’s not only is it just they’re having fun, I think they have a belief in themsel which allows them to open up a little bit. Yeah. allows them to to lean into more of the, you know, good feelings and you kind of ride that momentum. Some sometimes you get, you know, teams that like things are just feeling good, guys are in good moods, you get some good performances, you get some results, you get some points in the standings, and that means something and that can carry over. And sometimes teams can, for lack of a better term, aura their way to some to some wins in some games that otherwise like we tal we’ve talked about in in a number of post games this year already. There have been games that this team has either been in close games or have won that last year or the year before would have found ways to lose and a belief in yourself and some positive feelings and just and insane goalending and Yes, of course. and really good goalending makes a difference in being able to believe that you can pull yourself out of uh tough situations. All right, before we hit the break zone, do we have the photo of my uh my person falling on their face? Here’s the highlight from our NHL video game with the Discord guys. I’m number 68 Morating there. Wait for it. Ran over. Here we go. What happens here? No one knows. You stepped on the puck. That’s the I guess. So, I stepped on the puck. Oh, man. The physics engine of this game is is amazing. That’s the first and only time I saw that happen in that game. And uh that’s funny. I I hit the post repeatedly. But boy, hey, at least when you hit the post, it makes a sound. I’m like table turbine. Yeah, that’s true. Playing uh playing EAS, NHL, eShel, whatever they call it is a lot different from more highlight reels. What? Well, now that we’re I didn’t know they recorded the game, but it popped up in the Discord yesterday. You should play more and then some of your best. I need to get better before I start sending videos because it is a big adjustment from Ultimate Team where you control everybody to just controlling yourself. It’s way different. And I think there’s a little bit of a input lag. There’s like a half second delay. You’re connecting across the globe with people to play in the same game. It always gets a little laggy. I have to get used to the time difference. Anyway, we’re going to hit the break zone. I hope you enjoyed me falling on my face. Uh, back in 2 minutes. Hit that like button and we’ll be back in a moment on CHGO Blackhawks. Whatever the sport, the app to bet is Circa Sports Illinois. Circa Sports, it’s sports betting the way it should be. Go on that playoff run starting right now. That’s right. I said it. Yes. There you go. See, we’re back on CHDL Blackhawks presented by Bet 365. We have one mailbag question down. We need to move at a faster pace than this, but uh this is how this is how mailbags usually. We’ll try to get three in. This is how we stretch them out into mailbag week. It’s mail package day apparently. Excuse you. Uh all right. This one is from Whiskey TF66 says, “Thank you for zooming in, Sarah. NHL predictions. Top 100 is out and Conor Bard is the only Hawk on the list.” That’s the top 100 players. Seeing some of the defenseman on that list, why do y’all think Alex Vic needs to What do you think Alex Vic needs to do to start getting mentioned with those? Uh, play more on national TV, I think, is one thing. Um, I I I think it’s it’s always funny with defenseman because it’s just like putting up points is a is like a big marker for a lot of people with defenseman. Look at the the Norris Trophy. Like a lot of times it’s who’s the defenseman that scores the most, not necessarily who’s the best defenseman of the position. Um, and Vassic is not going to be a guy that puts up a lot of points. So you look at some of the best like defensive defenseman in the league and he’s going to have to be in that kind of conversation and that’s that and that that being his play style, he’s going to have to be in the conversation with some of those players. The guy that for me comes to mind at the top of the list is Jos not Josiah Slavven, Jacob Slavven, his brother. Um he’s one of those guys that it’s just like for probably three or four years you would look analytically and be like he’s one of the best defensive defenseman in the league. And it wasn’t up until just maybe a two three years ago that people started to be like, “Oh, Jacob Slavven’s really good.” like like it takes a while for people to for defenseman of that style to really notice and recognize um their abilities in in in that way. If Alex Lasser is going out and being the defenseman that he is while also putting up 40 and 50 points, yeah, he’d be he’d be on everyone’s radar, but he’s just not going to be that kind of defenseman. I feel like you think back to like Nicholas Jmerson who was undeniably one of the best defending players in the NHL and he never got any national credit even when the Hawks were winning cups because he was overshadowed by Keith and Sebrook who were better and put up more points. Um, and I do think like Vastic, I think his best shot is if he does get on an Olympic team and is able to sort of showcase that in front of everybody and they’ll they will certainly if he’s playing for team USA in the Olympics or when the World Cup comes back, whatever it might be with a big because world championships are one thing, but they don’t have the eye like people aren’t really watch only sickos like us are watching the world championships. Well, yeah. I mean, and people in Europe, right? Um, yeah, but on a big stage, international stage, I think that would be somewhere where Vasic could shine. But honestly, if we’re looking 2, three years ahead here, I think that Levanov is going to have a higher profile than Vastic. I think that Renzel is going to have a higher profile than Blastic. And if Wy Kaiser keeps going the way he’s going, he could have a higher profile than Blastic. And I think Vastic’s fine with that. I like I saw that he was asked the other day about like wearing the A and he was like, I don’t know. It was kind of weird. Like I think of all the guys that have worn this before and I don’t feel like I’m one of those guys. Like he’s kind of got this imposttor syndrome about himself when he absolutely deserves anything. He’s a he’s a very humble Yeah. guy, but I don’t I don’t think he seeks it either. Yeah. Which I’m not saying like there are players in the league that are seeking the spotlight, but I think there’s guys that gravitate more towards it or want some more of that. I think Alex Vic is very content in his space where he’s at right now. And I do think there is a leadership role for him down the road. I think he’s going to have an A or a C on his jersey at some point here permanently very very soon. Um, but I don’t know if he’ll ever be a guy who gets a lot of national publicity unless the Hawks start winning consistently or contending consistently is probably a better way to put it. Um, and then you just definitely have the uh the national exposure too cuz Slavven really got a bump in front of Nations. Yeah. Well, and and Carolina going to the playoffs year after year. more people seeing seeing him and recognizing his his game and and yeah getting the the recognition through team USA as well that like that helps. So I know you know Vic H was you know in the conversation for you know lower on the list but potentially in the conversation for the Olympic roster. I don’t think that that’s actually going to be happening for him. Maybe not this cycle, but four more years he’ll be 28. You know, this this could that could be a time when it’s just like he’s going to have a chance to play on that kind of stage. Um if he keeps going on the trajectory he has year over year and the Blackhawks keep going up and up like there’s going to be more exposure, more more eyes on him, um more opportunity to, you know, potentially play in the playoffs or play in the World Championships again. whatever it is. Um there’ll be ways for him to get more exposure that way. Yeah, he’s good. We like him. And uh so Oh, yeah. Sprout says, “When is Vlastic coming on the show?” We are things are we’re a little delayed in that negotiation. We’re we’re figuring it out. It’s just been kind of a hectic start to the season with all the uh you know, Centennial stuff, but we’re definitely working towards that efforting. Efing we’re hoping so. Um but we can say we’ve got a deal with Tony Granado to be here. Yeah. Tony will be part of the show this this season uh a number of times. First one next Monday should be coming up on uh yeah next Monday. That should be fun. 27th. So we’ll have Tony back in. Keep an eye on that. All right. Easy. Ev’s uh username is Evan. Oh, that makes sense. Uh when can we have a conversation about Wyatt Kaiser? He’s been unbelievable. Is it possible he has a long-term top four potential for a contending Blackhawks team? Uh, I could see him as this team’s forward number four defenseman very easily. Yes. You would say in no particular order, Renzel Vassic Lechnov Kaiser. I’m pretty comfortable with that. for the long term. Yeah, I I I think you I think you the way he has played the end of last season and started up this season, uh he’s for sure in that conversation and I think as things have kind of played out the way that his arrow has pointed up and then you look at how you know you have those guys and then you’re kind of still have to figure out Allen and Delmro Kaiser through training camp took himself self out of that group of defenseman and put him into the next group of defenseman. Took him out of the h rotating guys maybe to established NHL defenseman. So I think that’s a big step for him. Um and yeah, I mean they they’ve they’ve tasked him with with being the not babysitter but being the reliable guy alongside Ardum Levchenov. And that is a job that is supposed to help the development of Lechnov and turn and help him get to that point where he is Lechnov, one of maybe the top one or two defenseman on the team. And Kaiser is going to be a guy that they’re saying like, “Hey, like you, can you help him get there?” And so far he’s been able to do that. And like that’s a big feather in his cap for his career, for you know, how he stands in the organization, everything. He’s he’s been he’s been great. Money well spent. Yeah. I mean, and the fact that a guy at that age has already been trusted with that 23 years old, we’re putting our top prospects development partially in your hands, like you’re going to be his guiding light throughout this rookie season on and off the ice and he’s accepted it. And man, I if you get to go to a Hawks game and you can with game time or our takeovers, um, watch Kaiser. This has been one of my favorite things to do this year is to just watch Wyatt Kaiser a shift of his. He does so many little things that go unnoticed in a box score or you know even watching on TV unless they choose to highlight like just little stick checks just being the right place positionally taking an angle on a guy to prevent what looks like a scoring chance to you know defending someone who’s got a step on him without taking a penalty. He has been outstanding and I think we talk about this with Alex Velasic a lot too. I think there is a lot of untapped offensive potential for Kaiser too. I think he’s got the ability to score some goals. I think he will score some goals as his career goes on. But like I know they can’t yet, but can they just resign him already again? Like can we get the long-term extension done? It would be July 1 of next year they could do it, right? It would be this July 1st, I think. Yeah. Yeah. So, let’s just do that. I mean, let’s just take care of it. Maybe. Yeah. Just by the way, if you happen to go back and watch old episodes, just ignore the ones where we said like, who does Wy Kaiser think he is holding out money, waiting for camp? He hasn’t proven it himself. Yeah. Most of the September episodes, those were doed. You Those are AI. Those are deep fakes. All right. That was not us. Those aren’t us. Uh we were definitely uh edited and AIed. So, that was not us. That was definitely not us being wrong about hockey. That’s never happened ever. No. ever. Um, all right. Can we get one more quick one in here, Sarah? All right, let’s do one here from Brian. This is to use. Yeah, this is easy. He says, “Where can one acquire a Mr. Blackhawks Noodle Man? Is it a one-off? Would love to buy one for my crotch or even front yard for when the Hawks start playing again into June?” Yes. Uh, we only play Mr. Noodle Man when the Hawks win. So, you got to be here postgame wins, which is a lot, which is a lot these days. See him on Thursday. Got him at Rally House. Uh, they had it in Chicago Ridge Mall. So that’s where I saw it and then I came to work and I said to Jake Flanigan, “We need this. Can we buy this?” And he ordered it from Rally House. Uh yeah. So yes, you can get them. I think it was a hundred bucks. That was a little That’s why I asked Jake in this economy. Yeah. Right. That’s That’s right. That’s my That’s my groceries. I mean, that’s a that’s a 100 bucks on groceries. I’m one person. She lives in the city. Yes. Yeah. She shops at Whole Foods. No, but I shop at Trader for one person. I’m I’m thinking of for a family anyways. Yeah, I I’m alone. Just me. It’s a big It’s a big noodle, man. So, he’s pretty big. 100 bucks for that. I mean, I I guess Yeah, I guess that that’s all right. I hope the new edition has a little bit like a sound muffling. He is quite loud. But yes, you can get it at Rally House. I I’m sure if you just Google waving noodle arm Blackhawk guy. Yeah, you’ll find it. Yeah, definitely get yourself one and uh put our logo on there so people know we invented it. Yes, we there Thomas says it’s on Fanatics for 90 bucks. There you go. You can do that, too. Yeah, you might get a uh Seattle Kraken one with the Kraken spelled wrong. Sure. You can get one from Fanatics for sure. All right. Can we get one more in before the break? Or do you want to go to break early? What do you want to do? Oh, this one’s gonna take some time. All right. Uh, from J. You want to do this one quick? I got my answer for yours quick. Sure. Okay. All right. JZP jerseys says, “First mailbag question. If you were to do a jersey swap the same way that what the what Chaos guys are doing, what jerseys would you get each other?” Doesn’t have to just be Blackhawks jerseys. This one’s easy for me. Which jersey do you have? I would get Mario a uh Tony Ammani jersey cuz he’s the greatest number 10 in franchise history. And it would just be a history lesson a little bit. So you’d represent the proper number 10. We all love Patrick Sharp and he’s very handsome. He’s the handsomest number 10 in Blackhawks history, but the best is Tony Amani and I would get you a black Tony Amani jersey so you could recognize the greatness that was Tony Amani. Uh I would get you a Utah Mammoth Tusky jersey. Fair enough. I would wear that. I actually I do like now that I’ve seen it. I like the Utah hockey club uniforms. I really liked their colors in the game. People are saying it’s some weird AI thing, but I’m like I honestly think it’s kind of the logo did look a little like the default logo put in video games and the blue, but it looks good on it. Looks good on you. Good color scheme logo is looks fine on the jersey. Take that mammoth haters. And Mario did bring me uh he did bring me a jerseyish gift. He brought me a Samuels of Rockford Ice Jersey shirt. Jersey. A jersey as the kids call it. Yeah. So yeah, he already did it kind of. So I guess I got to find you a Tony Amani jersey. That’s fine. You I’ll go on eBay. Gently used covered in mustard stains. All right, we’ll talk to you in 2 minutes. Hit that like button if you’ve not done it yet. We are right there at 100 likes. By the way, uh, Giggy’s good reminder uh, announced today Paul Lewinsky from Rockford uh, is out for the season with some torn ligaments in his left knee. That sucks. Not great. And I know uh Greg Boyce was having a conversation with Mark Bernard, the Rockford GM ahead of the season at the UC and said he was expecting huge things from Lewinsky. Had a really good preseason. Had a good start to the regular season. Sucks when you see a player get a set back like this. So hopefully he bounces back and finds a stride it looked like he was finding this year. Yeah. Uh two points through the first three games of the year. Um that’s just that’s just a a really tough blow uh for him. But yeah, hopefully the the recovery is is back to 100% uh and he’s ready to go for next season. That’s God. And just seeing the the collision goes down awkwardly. It’s it just it sucks. So hopefully all all’s going to be good with with him and um yeah, just gets gets back to it next year because that I mean that’s that’s a guy in Ludwinsky where you know his his wheels are his biggest thing and knee injuries can take some take some air out of those wheels. So hopefully he’s able to bounce back and uh gets healthy and gets right. Yep. Uh good thoughts out to Paul Lewinsky. That’s that sucks. All right, ready to have our annual conversation about this topic? the logo. Oh, no. Nope. Not that one. The other one. This one. Uh, from Featherhead 88. Is it time to retire Chelsea Dagger as the Hog Skull song? Every time I hear it, it takes me back to the banner years. While I love it and think it was a great song for the banner years, things like music have such an effect on her memory. I think this generation should put a stamp on their legacy now by making something like a new goal song completely uniquely theirs that can trigger new memories for fans. I think the new goal song and we can get some we we can trademark it and get some royalties off it is uh the frat house on Madison. Oh yeah, that should be the new goal set. That is a good one. That’s pretty good. And it’s right free. I don’t think they they don’t have to pay for it. Well, we can put the right shoe. There it is. Goal scored by Conor. That’s my Gene Honda impression. Spot on. If you don’t ask, I really thought he was in the room with Yeah, pretty good. That was amazing. Um, no, I don’t think you need to get rid of Chelsea Dagger. I think that is you’re not so far removed from that team and th those teams and those players that made that song iconic in its time. I think it still sticks with the Blackhawks. It still sticks with fans. It still sticks with the United Center. Um, and it still sticks around the league that people associate it with the Blackhawks. And as as things progress, like yeah, you could say this, you know, this team and this generation needs to have their own um stamp on it. But I I still think it’s a song that resonates with with the majority of the fan base and people still get up for it. Um it’s it is still I think an iconic song within the organization. I don’t think you need to get rid of it now. Unless the team says like, hey, we if the team says it that we want to do something different, organizations on board with it, then I’m I’m open to suggestions. But I I for me, I’m still keeping it around. I am starting to feel like it’s time for something new because of the new identity of the team. Um, but it doesn’t bother me. I’m kind of in I would say I’m indifferent on it, but I’m more willing now than ever to move on. Sure. I don’t know. I just But it’s it’s become synonymous. It depends on what you change it to. I would like the guys to have their own songs. I know that’s kind of a nightmare from a in arena production standpoint. You’re really putting putting a lot of uh work on DJ Oreo’s plate. Hey, he can handle it. He can handle it. Um, that would be a I I some teams have done that and some players choose songs, some some don’t and they just play generic goal songs. Um, I think that would be a lot of fun. It is a logistical challenge, but it’s it can be done. Um, but yeah, I mean, if if they were just if they were to change it and it was just something like, you know, generic like uh you know, Zombie Nation or something like that, it’ be like, “All right, like that song gets a pop. Sure, but everyone plays it like you you’d want it to still be something unique as Chelsea Dagger was when it when it, you know, became a thing for the Hawks. Someone mentioned uh they changed the songs they take the ice to this year and they did. Last year it was the Four Horsemen by Metallica and Money for Nothing by Dire Straits. They I mean they cycle through a couple. Uh this year it is from what I from what Shazam tells me. Shazam. They take the ice. The song is called Disco by Davided Misilli. That’s like a EDM song. And then when the game is starting at Separate Ways by Journey. Oh yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So there’s there So when they first come out, start doing their line, you know, after they announce the after the anthem and the That’s that song disco. And then right when they’re about to line up, the puck’s about to drop. It’s Separate Ways by Journey, which actually sounds pretty good. That’s a That’s a great song. Not the biggest journey guy in the world, but that song played at full volume that undeniably rocks. Uh, and Tom Sawyer is a song on the intro video. That so good. It is so good. But I got to say this, take notes. I know the Hawks are listening. They always do cuz I always hear when I say something wrong. Um, the intro has like boom, like big bass drums. Yeah. And then Tom Sawyer starts and it’s like just a whatever, just a standard version of the song. They gotta add some hard-hitting bass drum for the arena so it hits as hard as the opening video’s music hits. Boost it. It’s got to be that boom that like shakes the building. They got to find a way to do that cuz I feel like when Tom Sawyer starts playing in full, it loses a little bit of the steam that the intro video had before that. Just my two cents. Yeah, you could do that. Or I think if you do that, you run the risk of blowing up the speakers at the UC, which they’ve done on a number of occasions. It’s always fun. John Hansen’s trying to do it too sometimes. He could be trying to blow speakers out. I I the the intro video with Tom Sawyer is great. Uh the other intro song that they’ve been using for their like pregame video packages was uh with Rise Against I think is awesome. That’s a Chicago connection as well. Um yeah, I think the the songs and the music that they use within the game is usually all done really well. Um, yeah. So, I mean, I think Chelsea Dagger can be a part of it if you want to change it. I’m open to suggestions. I just want it to be something unique. Yeah, definitely. I I mean, they were they weren’t the first team to have like their own goal song, but Chelsea Dagger really kind of became, you know, like the not the Blue Jackets tried to make their own. It was a similar kind of a song that was used in like a nationwide car insurance song that was their goal song for a while. Did the Maple Leafs use that, too? I don’t know. And here’s what I’ll say. Don’t do this. Don’t have a band write a song for you. Ah, it’s always lame. The Rangers goal song is stupid. No, I like the Rangers. The Dallas Stars one is dumb. I like the Rangers one. No, I No, just find something cool. I I just say let let the players pick their music. I want to ask the players, too, like, do you recognize a single song when you take the ice? I’m sure some of them do. I don’t know, man. Did you see the video they put out where they’re trying to spell names of former Blackhawks? Yeah, I was enraged. Oh, yeah. Well, cuz Rutu and Jamnov both got disrespected. They’re all spelling Jamnov with a J. Like, you’ve never heard of Jamnov? Jamnov. He was a captain. Jamnov. Yeah, when they were in diapers. I don’t care. Mino was the only one that got any of them right. Well, yeah, because he’s old and he has respect. Uh Jay Strazner points out that the Dallas Star song is Panta. That’s true. And I’m a fan of Panta, but that song sucks. Dallas Star. I’m sorry. Dallas Star. It’s not a song. It’s just the team’s name. I I love it. Yeah. And Ryan says, “Ministry put out a Blackhawk song, Keys to the City.” I like Ministry. I like Al Jorgensson. huge legitimate Hawks fan. He was at the bad the opening night. Yeah. Yeah. That song was not great. Yeah. Uh now maybe see if anyone can do this is Tom Mel. Tom Mel could come up with that would be good. Some unique riff that gets the crowd jumping. Get Rage Against the Machine to do something. I don’t know who that is. Who? You know what Rage Against the Machine is? No. Come on. I truly like I’ve I don’t really know what you guys You can see right when his heart breaks. [Laughter] Sean just screamed, “You’re old.” I’ve never heard of those people in my life. You’ve heard their songs. Maybe I’ve heard the song. You’ve heard Bulls on Parade. You’ve gone to any sporting event. You’ve heard. You’ve heard Rage Against the Machine. Sure. You You know them. You know them. You just don’t know. You know them. Saying those names to me mean nothing. Well, Tom Mel is a is the guitar player for Age against Machine. Okay. And Audio Slave. Nice. Nice. And he also had his own project called The Watchmen. Yeah, it was good. I saw him open for the hold steady. He played his Watchman songs and then between songs he would play rage riffs and the crowd would go insane for the 30 seconds he’d play the rage rifts and then he go back to his own stuff and be like crowd goes and back to the rage rifts and everybody goes crazy. Uh it was awesome. Yeah. Like we just got to we got to educate. Like when I grew up I knew what music from the 60s and 70s was. Yeah. Even though I was young when it came out, it didn’t mean I didn’t do my research. That’s it. Sarah, I’m making you a playlist. Sarah’s homework playlist. I can’t spell courtesy. I don’t know who whoever that name you just said is. I already forgot. You would know. You will know. I’ll play you. I’ll play you 15 seconds of Rage Against the Machine. You’ll know it. Okay. How How much can we play on YouTube before getting uh our channel canled? Yeah. Oh, boy. Yeah. There you go. Big Yeah. Killing in the name of You know that. You know it. You do. You know it. You gota after the show just go on. I’ll play something else. All right. We got I know what I’m listening to all the way home now just to make me feel better. Yeah. Uh Vince Loma says, “With how well the season has started, even if they most likely will miss the playoffs, how much consideration should Jeff Flashall get for the Jack Adams award?” I mean, without looking it up, has the Jack Adams award ever gone to a team that didn’t make the playoffs? a coach to a team that didn’t make the playoffs because I feel like it’s usually it’s usually the award of like we thought your team was going to be totally ass this season and they made the playoffs so you get the award because teams that are supposed to be good and then are good like you know how many years had you know John Cooper probably should have won it because he’s just probably the best coach in the NHL or you know Rod Bindammore or Jared Bettinar over seasons like just have just some of them have won it but not year-over-year because those teams are expected to be good. So Google AI tells me AI again Brian Sutter won the Jack Adams in 91 with the Blues who did not make the playoffs. Bob Murdoch with the Jets in 1990 did not make the playoffs. And it says Joel Quenville won the award in 2000 but was fired in 2004 after the Blues lost in the conference quarterfinals that year. I don’t understand how those things are related. Um, but I think Bob Murdoch and Brian Sutter are two. So, not since the early 90s, but I think if I would say this, if unless some team has a big, you know, uh, unexpected run to the playoffs, through the playoffs, and I know that Jack Adams is named before the playoffs started, regular season. Yeah. So, some unexpected team has a playoff run. And if we’re looking at it right now, is there anyone that really Well, we don’t know. has been shocking out of the gate. We don’t know yet. If there is, it’s the Hawks. Yeah. If there is, it’s it’s Chicago. So, if the if the Hawks are in the 80 point range when they were predicted to finish dead last by pretty much everybody who picks, I think he definitely has to get some consideration for sure. Yeah. I I I think I think you’ll get consideration um if that if that happens if they miss the playoffs, but I still think it’s hard for in this day and age um because there’s always there’s always teams that surprise um or there’s teams that like oh maybe they might be in in the playoff hunt and then they go on a dominant run like if let’s say the Red Wings keep the front runner right now then you’re saying yeah maybe maybe he’s he’s in the mix too but yeah if this if this team finishes with above 80 points I think you’re talking about JeffL threshold squarely in that conversation. Yeah. Um the Red Wings are five and one. Yeah. Pretty good start to the That’s that I mean that was unexpected. So if they if if the Red Wing they’re not going to stay five and one. I hope that would be bad um for everyone but them. Um I would think Mlullen as of right now is the front runner. But there’s definitely some I think there will be some smoke around Jeff Flash if they’re in an 80 point category. Win it probably not. consideration. I think certainly yeah, especially considering the market and everything, you know. I mean, you could you I mean, you could say Martan Sam the Wii could also be in that conversation, too. The way that the Canadians have started and also started also considering market and exposure. Yeah, they had some expectations, but maybe not to be as good as they’ve been. They’re 52 and0. Mhm. Um Boston. Yeah. I mean I mean through seven games, six, seven games of this season for most teams. Um I mean the the most surprising team that is doing well is the Blackhawks. Yeah, there you go. That’s what I would say. I like that. Sweet. Beautiful. Pat Jewers says, “If Oliver Moore continues his pace and ends up called up by Christmas, who do you think comes out of the regulars?” We were kind of having this conversation a little bit. Yeah. Yesterday looking at how Jeff Flash’s really liked using the 11 forwards, seven defenseman setup, and the fact that you have about 14 healthy forwards uh available to you, there’s very limited space. So, I don’t know. I think I think for Oliver Moore to force his way into the lineup without there being injuries or trades or whatever, um I think you got to you’d probably have to get Sam Laughaferty out of the way, which if Moore keeps playing this way and Sam Laferty keeps sitting up in the press box, that’s easy for him to do. Um, but then you also probably say he’s got a he’s got a leaprog Rielle and he’s probably got a leaprog Ryan Green. And there’s got to be some sort of opening in that top six for Oliver Moore to kind of step into and play in that play in that role or third line you could say as well. Yeah. But I mean I I think you really have a good thing going with that Donado, Dickinson, McKay setup as your third line. You also have a really good thing going with the guys in your top six right now. Um well they had MV up with Bedard and Bertuzi last game too. So well with Dickinson out. Yeah with they shifted things around a little bit but well and so I just I just think that there will be the way that the NHL group is going right now. There’s not a lot of those prime lineup spots in the top nine that you would say are open for interpretation. It’s really that fourth line or that bottom group. But I don’t know. I mean, maybe with the 11 forward setup that Blasher likes to go to, you get a lot of rotation. So, you could throw Oliver Moore in there and he kind of rotates around. He doesn’t have to be stuck with with a lot. Yeah. I just But I don’t know if that’s maximizing for me if he’s here though, he’s got to be playing most every night. Yeah. And I will tell all this just tell everybody in the chat this too, like don’t worry about Sam Laferty. If it becomes a necessity to move on from Sam Laferty, they’re they will do it. They’ll they’ll bury him. They’ll wave him. They’ll trade him. They’ll do what they have to do. If if if Sam Laferty is truly becoming a problem. Like he’s been on a team all year. He’s played two games. No one has sat so Lafy can play that you wanted to sit that you didn’t want to sit, right? Like it’s right. You could say Riel early on, but okay. Riel’s been back in since then. I mean, they’ve played seven games and he’s sat for five of them. So, yeah. I I don’t I wouldn’t worry too much about the presence of Sam Laferdy. The only thing I worry about is, and he’s there, by the way, just to be clear, there’s no signs of this at all, but if he starts becoming disgruntled or frustrated, does it become a distraction? Does it become a problem? But he doesn’t strike me as that kind of guy. I think Sam is pretty aware of where he is at this point in his career. He played only 60 games with Buffalo last year. He was scratched a lot there. I think he I think he realizes that this is kind of if he wants to be in the NHL, this is going to be his role. 13th, 14th forward. You come in maybe once a week or when injuries happen and you just kind of deal with it. Yeah. Is it fun? No. But you’re getting an NHL contract and you’re flying NHL planes and staying in NHL hotels, so it’s not so bad. But if they have to wave him and he clears and get sent to Rockford, they’ll do it. Or if he wants a buyout, sure, fine. They’ve got nothing but money. Yeah. Nothing but money to spend. So you could totally do that. So I don’t don’t concern yourself with Lyd but but with more I wouldn’t mind him on the bottom six because I do think he plays a style that is conducive to that like he he is a willing defender. He is good in all zones. Um, I’d really like to see like maybe him and and Landon Slagert together with that combination of speed and tenacity and yeah, you know, I I think Oliver Moore is like a significantly more skilled Sam uh Landon Slagert in terms of the desire out there. Like just kind of a yeah, just attacks attacks attacks. So, I don’t know. I don’t think it has to be top six or bust for him, especially with the willingness they’ve shown to throw Reicho in there. And we’ve been noticing over the last few games whenever they’re four on four rifles out there with all that open ice. Yeah. So they’re they’re kind of cherrypicking their opportunities to use these guys and more gives them another opportunity like that. So and look, maybe when he’s here they go to 12 12 and six cuz you’ve got someone who deserves to play. Yeah. And you know, if it’s, as the question said, by December Christmas, um maybe you’re in a situation where the defensive rotation you don’t need four right-handed shots, maybe you’re down to, okay, we can play with six because these guys can kind of handle things uh on their own more than having to kind of split up responsibilities. So things things still need to play out. Uh we’re we’re not to the end of October yet, but I think early on what you’ve seen from Oliver Moore in the AHL has been really good. Same with Nick Lordis. Like you want those guys to keep going in that direction, keep on that trajectory. You don’t need to be ahead of schedule for any reason. Like there’s no rush uh for those guys right now. Um same thing with with what Frank Nazar did last season. He played 21 games in the AHL and was was up I think early December. Yeah. Is he up before or after they fired Richardson? Uh that’s a good question. Let me see. I’m going to find his game log here because Richardson was beginning of December or was it end of November? Uh his first game last year was December 14th. Okay. So, and I think Richardson was out like the first week of December. Uh, that was December 6th. There you go. So, yeah, he was not here with So, so after they made that change is when Nazar came up, which was Paul Oliver Fire Blast. Sure. That’s what has to happen. Um, no. I just I I think that was that move with with Frank was both warranted based off of what he was doing in the AHL and also the like that change of philosophy. Yes. Get Joey Anderson out of here philosophy. Yes. S Joe Anderson get get your young guys up here and more acclimated. So I I I think I think Oliver Moore will take a little bit more time because the team’s in a different spot the NHL team is. But I wouldn’t rule out that he’s he’ll find his way up here probably before it’s, you know, end of the season, give these guys their Yeah. And Giggles brings up a good point, too, and says Nazar was well over a point per game, too, when he got promoted. Clearly the best player on the ice night after night. Warren Lardes still need to prove that consistently. And I mean, look, they’ve only played six games. There’s no there is no need to rush either of them. And I know we are hungry to get as many young players on this roster as we can, but it’s okay if both those guys spend the entire season in Rockford. It’s all right. It I don’t think it means anything has gone wrong. Just let them overcook a little bit. It’s fine. And there’s a potential that this roster is playing well and this this group is clicking and they’re getting positive results. They’re getting wins. like there’s a potential there that they don’t want to necessarily blow things up for the sake of blowing them up just so all the young guys can play. For the record, Oliver Moore has six points in five games. So, he is over point per game. Um, but it’s six games. Let’s see how it looks early. American Thanksgiving and Halloween and all. They’re playing well, those guys to start the year. And Nick Lord, eight points in five games. Yeah. Leads the AHL in scoring. Um, is that good? That’s pretty good. and and Lardis today talking with with Ice Hogs Media um was mentioning about how focused he is or wants to be um about being a good two-way player because he knows that doing that and being trustworthy that way allows him to get more offensive opportunities both in a coaching and situational standpoint and also a on ice performance standpoint which is what we hear from Jeff Blashel and his philosophy and it’s, you know, so to the to the points of, you know, when people say like, you know, do the ice hogs do things differently than the Blackhawks and blah blah, it’s it’s uniform. Yeah. What they’re what they what they’re teaching is across the organization because you want those players that you’re developing or that are going to come up to the NHL to know what’s going on here and what the expectation is so that the messaging is not different, the schematics aren’t different. When they get on the ice, they don’t have to teach them something different. they they run it the same way. Um, which is kind of a little bit different than what things were, you know, a handful of years ago where the Ice Hogs were trying to operate kind of as a AHL team to compete with the guys that they got that weren’t in Chicago rather than they’re using as a development uh development ground. We got one more Sarah. All right, let’s get to it here. This one from Mr. Potato Head. Mr. Potato Head. Bedius Balius Dallas the Dallas sure day Dallas be dead Dallas Mr. Potato Head says, “NHL expansion is a question of when, not if. Rather than speculate on which city gets a team first, I want to know how you think GMs will react to the expansion draft. Probably not the panic of the Vegas draft, but also probably not as dull as this Seattle draft. My conspiracy theory is that it’ll be two teams at once. How would that expansion be handled? Does that change how many players are protected? Thanks.” I would imagine that it would it would be tricky to do that because you have two teams selecting. So, you’d probably have to you’d probably only be able to protect fewer players. Yeah, because two teams need pools to select from. What year was that? Was it Ottawa and San Jose came in the league the same year? 92 expansion sounds about right. Didn’t the duck Isn’t the Ducks come in that same year, too? Here, let’s see. History of expansion 9293. I want to make sure I get it right. I mean, I know it’s Yeah. But those expansion draft rules were a lot different back then. It wasn’t Ottawa and Tampa. Okay. Ottawa and Tampa. So, it was 92. Yeah. I mean, those rules were a lot different. You were you were getting actual scrap heap NHL players, not oh, we’re leaving Mark Country Flurry unprotected like you Well, it’s I mean the salary cap changes everything. Yeah, of course, you know, so that you can’t even really compare, but yeah, I mean you’ll have to leave more exposed. You’ll have to That would be really interesting. And I especially now with the exploding salary cap and now the potential of two teams joining NHL at the same time, which would mean two $1 billion price tags paid to the league to expand. Yes, which is $2 billion. And then that’s even more league revenue, which means an even higher salary cap, which means I I I can’t even I I’ll be honest with you. I am too dumb to figure out how that expansion draft’s going to work. Yeah, I have I’ll leave that to the Elliot Freeman’s of the world. But that that’s going to be when you consider if we did this 5 years ago when the cap was pretty stagnant, we kind of knew where things were going, how things it would be a little bit easier to figure out. But now with the new CBA, the rising cap, rising revenues, everything, it really is going to make it complicated and difficult. And I think I would imagine that some really good players are going to have to be exposed. I’d imagine so they might force it, right? If I’m if I’m remembering some of the rules, it the protected players was anyone on a no movement with a no movement clause and also on their entry level deal. I think that was it for protections. And then you got extra players that you could select whether it was eight skaters or like four forwards. Here’s the So this is the Vegas expansion draft. Uh clubs will have two options for players they wish to protect in the draft. Seven forwards, three defenseman, and one goalie or eight skaters and one goalie. All players who have currently effective and continuing no movement clauses at the time of the expansion draft and who declined to wave such clauses must be protected and will be counted towards their club’s applicable protection limits. All first and secondyear professionals as well as all unsigned draft picks will be exempt from selection and will not be counted towards the club’s applicable protection limits. So maybe if you’re having two teams simultaneously in an expansion draft, you might just be like anyone who’s on an ELC or who has a no move clause is protected otherwise everyone’s free. Could be. That would be because you need because you need to have that talent pool open because two teams are going are going after it. But you so you would you’d have to give GMs a heads up on that now though. Oh yeah. You wouldn’t you wouldn’t say we’re expanding and you have one month to figure it out, right? Because you know an expansion draft is coming because then you might have some you might have some chess to be played with some teams being like, “Well, we’re signing this guy to a new contract. It’s, you know, a three or four year deal or something like that, something you might not normally put a protection on. But if you know an expansion draft’s coming and you really don’t want to lose this guy, you might give him a no movement clause or something like that, which inherently runs its own risk because if the guy stinks and you can’t move him. Yeah. Then you you know it’s it’s it’s a gamble thing. That is that would be interesting. Yeah, it’s a really good question. Appreciate the question. And the people saying, you know, they don’t need to expand. It doesn’t matter. It’s falling on deaf ears because money is is money. We all agree that they don’t need to expand, but they’re going to. They didn’t need to expand when they had 30. They didn’t need to expand when they had 26, and we’re at 32. Speaking of expansion, remember the Whalers and Nordiks? Yes. They’re going to play Thursday at the Ball Arena in Denver. The Avalanch Time Machine works. The Avalanche will be wearing Nordik’s uniforms. The Hurricanes will be wearing Whalers uniforms. Is this Stolen Valor? Uh, I mean, they both franchises kind of sucked, so never. It’s like I mean is there any valor in the Whalers franchise aside from Brass Bonanza? I don’t think so. I wonder if I hope the Avalanche honor that if the Hurricanes score they should play Brass Bonanza just for fun. Who would be mad about that? That’d be fun. Um but two greatl looking uniforms. I know the Hawks play the the Lightning that night, but be nice for your second screen to watch the Whalers and Nordies battle. Uh the Fanatics did a great job with the uniforms. They look really good. So that’ll be fun. All right, we’re going to be back tomorrow and a reminder our first visit of the year with our pal Steve Peters. He is going to break down Wyatt Kaiser and some of the other systems that Jeff Flashel has put in place. So do not miss tomorrow’s show 2:30. The Sharks did this year what the Hawks did last year, bring in a bunch of 40 year old vets, how’s that working out for y’all?
Yes Jay, Tom Morello would be great to come up with a new song for the Hawks! Sarah, it makes me so sad!!! Tom and Rage are an amazing Chicago based band. Please listen to them!
Kaiser is really like a mini Quinn Hughes
The most notable example is Jacques Demers of the Detroit Red Wings, who won the award in the 1986-87 season. His team had a record of 34-36-10 for 78 points, which was not enough to qualify for the playoffs in the Clarence Campbell Conference that year. (Jack Adams) source: Gemini
Money for nothing and Metallica should be brought back, journey is fine but both of em were better last year
I thought Kaiser was Hawks best D man last year. Great stick and board play. D. Keith
definetaly
I love the play of Kaiser. He is sharp every game. His speed and anticipation are top-notch.
I can never spell "receive". And I used to write it every day lol
where can i get mario's hat? it's dope
Hawks coaches recently moved Donato to the third line, and Dach up on the first line with Bedard. I don’t think
Lardis/ Moore are quite ready yet, I wonder if Lardis is used to the physicality of pro game yet. Moore has to work on his finishing skills.
Nice they gave Dach a look in top 9 last week but he’s not long term solution in top 9…
Personally, I think Frondel/ Kantservov will get a look at that spot when he comes up in the spring. But that is months and 60 games from now. What do you think?
The Hawks are moving up in the various NHL power rankings this week, so the recognition is starting to come.
