Carolina Hurricanes have to figure out their power play

I would say there are three very obvious statistical silver linings. Now, obviously Freddy playing well is a good like there there are other silver linings, but just three kind of like super cut and dry statistical silver linings. Uh one, uh Sebastian kept his point streak alive. He has now had at least a point in every game this season. Two, Seth Jarvis kept his point streak alive. He has now had a point in every game this season. and three. Nikolai Eers started his point streak. Let’s go. Eers got a point. Just need to see one go through the hoop right now. He’s got one that can break the seal that can that can get take the lid off. Whatever your metaphor is. Nikolai Eers is officially in the stat column as having a point. It was a secondary assist. And uh I listen, I’m not going to make a huge deal. I have it on the broadcast. They made a uh some convincing arguments on how right the the the run he made and the everything he did to set it up. I’m I’m not going to dive all the way into that and give him all the credit for for a goal that obviously has Jarvis and Aaho’s impact all over it. But what I will say is I I didn’t care how that first point came. I don’t care if it was if it involved all the wacky uh uh yakidy saxy uh music playing ridiculousness. Whatever it took to get Nikolai Eers’s a point, I’m good with take a little bit of that pressure off off of him and now he can go play hockey because without the production, there has been quite a few signs of pretty good hockey from Nikolai Eers, right? There’s one or two passes a game where I think like, geez, that is an assistworthy pass that just didn’t get finished. uh Keandre Miller last night, right? Eers with the uh the leak out and and Miller has the opportunity doesn’t doesn’t finish doesn’t change the fact that it was an assist worthy pass from from Eers and I think there’s been a good amount of those and eventually right kind of similar to the all the breaks going the Kane’s way through five games and then last night felt like they didn’t uh eventually the the statistical regression to the mean will happen. Rod Brendenmore was asked about the uh that top line, right? Thoughts on Aaho’s line during the game. This is what Rod had to say. I thought they were pretty good. I mean, I thought they obviously got the one. Had a few other looks. You know, that that like I said, that’s uh they have to be on the score sheet and like to see us get a little more um you know, that the them on the power plays got they’re not really not connecting yet the way they need to to be to be real effective. But overall, like I said, the game was there for us. We Isn’t it funny how no matter what we talk about, it comes back to the power play after a loss. After wins, occasionally we talk about the power play and things, you know, it needs to get better. After a loss, every answer somehow works. It’s, you know, you come in the side door, you walk around the block and you end up, you always end up talking about the power play. Um, this is I want to be clear, it’s not 2020 hindsight. when they signed Nikolai Eelers, you can you can go back and listen to our our very first show after they signed Nikolai Elers. The the thing that I I don’t want to say concerned about, but the one thing that I was like, “All right, this isn’t, you know, the my dream scenario is he is not the unconscious volume shooter that I’ve always dreamed of for the Canes, right? I always I always say you got all these guys doing everything. Got glue guys, dirty work, you got all your forwards play every bit of the ice. And I’ve I’ve kind of dreamed of just that that uncon like Monte Ellis. I want for basketball fans out there like I wanted that Kobe in the years between Shaq and Pow where it was just like I’m launching shots. I’ve wanted that guy and Eelers isn’t right. And and sometimes I think Jarvis, Aaho, and whoever is that third guy, which obviously is Eelers now, they do get caught with the I can I may have a shot here, but I can make a better pass to set up a better shot to set up a better pass. Set up better shot. Set up a Oh, man. They got it. Eventually, I think they’ll they’ll learn each other to where uh it sets up the perfect shot and there’s a guy waiting for the perfect shot and and they’ll go ahead and make it happen. But that that takes more time than say dropping in the stereotypical I’m hunting my shot guy. Uh because you simply you need less chemistry for that guy to have success cuz he’s just sitting there yelling puck puck puck shot top shelf. You thought for a while it was supposed to be fetch. Yes. It just it just hasn’t turned out especially on the power play. Has not turned out. Not the way we expected. I think at at times, you know, I I I at times I wonder if if Seth Jarvis isn’t growing into that, if he’s not getting addicted to to feel, you know, feeling the the feeling of of finding the back of the net. Yeah. And I would I would tell him I would encourage him to. I’d be an enabler there. I I’d be all about it. Um I’ll tell Seth, you can never shoot too much. Absolutely not. I don’t think anyone on that top line can shoot too much. No, I don’t think anyone on that top line can shoot too much. And if and if uh heck, I don’t think Fetch can shoot too much on whatever line he’s on. Like I I think the the irony is the Canes are known for like stat patting their shots on goal. Yet so often when you’re watching the vibe is I wish I wish certain guys would take way more shots and and be a little bit more greedy. And I think that that bleeds into the the power play a little bit. And I think that bleeds into the top line a little bit. And I think those are things that, you know, we’re we’re being so nitpicky. Like I I I completely acknowledge that, you know, I’m talking about a line right now where two guys have had at least one point in every game this year and you’re through six games. And I’m I’m sitting here nitpicking that group’s production. Like, that’s ridiculous on its face, but I’m doing it anyway. And I can’t really I I can’t hold myself back. Well, that trio obviously playing on the power play as well, which I know is a big point of contention, Tim. Maybe they’re doing which is also weird. Go ahead. Maybe they’re doing the reverse of last season because in the first half of last year, first 41 games. Went ahead and rechecked the math. They were 23.4% on the power play. The first 41 games last year, that’s one of it’s actually top five in the NHL. Probably audio of us going, “Thank goodness they fixed the power play.” Hey, power play was hot. second half of the season, games 42 through 82, 13.5%. In the second half of the year, but then in the playoffs, they were 12 of 52, which is 23%. That’s Well, you know what the I mean, I don’t know how many were on the the power play, but got hot scoring in in the postseason. That could be a difference right there. Yeah, for sure. But anyway, so this team has had up and down a power play before. We saw it last year. Again, the first half of the season, they were cooking as good as any power play in the entire league. The second half of the season, dreadful. Can I Can I uh It’s along here, folks. Offer up an explanation. Go on. Martinez was cranking early. And then the postseason got rolling. Mhm. And in that group in the middle, they didn’t have that that scorer guy, right? They didn’t have that that, you know, hey, what’s my job on this team? Yeah, help out everywhere, but my job to score. uh they didn’t have that that that guy. And I I again, we’re being extremely nitpicky, extremely fine tooththed comb, but I want somebody to be more selfish. Somebody.

  1. Ik how it looks being negative about a 5-1 team but it’s the same issues that stagnate us every year. Rod can’t coach offense. You have to be able to get the PP points in the playoffs to win games that simple.

  2. So much invested in this team it seems to me another specials team coach is needed otherwise more of the same. Team isn’t tough, don’t stand up for each other, PP is terrible and the shoot from everywhere mentality doesn’t necessarily translate to goals. Svechnikov picked number two over all, six games zero points and a -3. Trade him.
