THE HERD | Colin Cowherd STUNS, Seattle Seahawks Are NOT GREAT With Sam Darnold | NFL
officially late October. That was ugly. No longer September 15th. Warm air, crisp feeling. That was awful. Sam Darnold was inconsistent. Four total giveaways, 12 penalties. They called a dumb trick play. Cooper Cup throwing the ball. The good news, their defensive line, Seattle defensive line for three and a half hours, manto man dominated Houston. I feel bad for CJ Strad. CJ Strad sits in the pocket, throws a beautiful ball. He’s under total duress. They can’t get the offensive line right. And Seattle’s defensive front dominated, but Seattle was up 15 points at home in the fourth quarter. And what followed was a punt, a fumble, an interception, and a punt. So the you know what Seattle’s trying to do? They lead the NFL in rush attempts. They want to be a rush and a playaction pass team, but they also lead the NFL in giveaways. Last night they had four. And they are just too mistakrone at this point to be an excellent team. They’re a good team, but they should have won last night 33-6. A Darnold fumble, a Darnold pick late in the fourth quarter. The only thing if you look at it this year, they should be 7-0. But Darnold had the fumble against the Ners and then Darnold had a late pick in a game. Otherwise, they’re seven and0. That and and I love Sam, but Reckless is what not only Darnold’s history is, it’s what Seattle feels like now. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. All right. Seattle Seahawks fans. No. No. No. No. No. No. As someone who actually watched this game and stayed up late and was up until like 3:00 a.m. making videos, we need to have a real conversation right now. Cuz you know what? I’m not married. I don’t got kids. I’m not 55 years old yet. Um, and so I I actually stayed up and watched this game. And I guarantee you a lot of people did not uh on TV, okay? Especially the East Coasters, okay? I don’t think they were up until, you know, whatever the time the game ended. I think they were going to sleep because they actually got to wake up and actually go to work and they got wives and kids and whatnot. So, no, no, no, no, no. I sat through and watched this and I watched the the seven hours of football last night. Okay. Watched every minute of it. We’re going to talk about this. Um, and Seattle Seans, I I I feel your pain right now. Uh, with the Mariners and all of that, I just got this was my hat. This was my lucky hat that I grew up wearing. I played baseball at a pretty competitive level. Uh, this was my hat. Okay. So, I I am I am with you here. I I feel your pain. I mean, this hat is has been worn a lot. This was literally my lucky hat. So, I had to pull it out. So, I I am sorry for your loss. It was still an awesome season for the Mariners. I mean, the Seahawks fan base has been Seattle fan base have been so awesome to me. Um, you guys showed me what was possible and what the potential for the growth of this channel. Uh, you guys, you guys have subscribed in such massive numbers. Literally thousands upon thousands upon thou. You guys showed me that when you guys show up, when you watch the full length of the video, we get numbers through the roof. Subscriptions through the roof. You know, the things go vertical. So, I I the Seattle Seahawks fans have left me so inspired and motivated just to keep going and going and going and so like I I can’t thank you enough. And so now, one, please keep going, please. But two, let’s get after this game right now because we’re we’re having the wrong conversation. And again, that game was a weird game. I I talked about it in the post game and then I thought about it even more. Um, and here’s the take now. Okay, here’s here’s here’s the grounded take for this game. Yes, this game absolutely, positively, undeniably shouldn’t have been close. It should have been an absolute blowout. It should have just been just run away with it undeniably. Okay, first off, this Texans defense is elite. The best defense in the NFL. They’re averaging 12 points per game and the Seahawks hung 27. Okay. The the the the the blitzing that they’re and the pressure that the that the that the Texans are able to do. First off, as they showed on the broadcast, the one uh fumble that, you know, on on Sam Darnold was just beautiful ball by the Texans. And yes, bad O line play and a bad block by uh I forget which running back it was at the time. uh you know for for Sam and it was just swallowed up which was also bad play calling because it was just like run run and then let’s have Sam drop back like that was a mistake and so you know I criticized the play calling and I absolutely ripped the trick play. I told you guys uh last night um I originally made a video in the middle of the game because I was so mad about it and I I decided to not post it because I was just like you know I this is ridiculous. This is this is absolutely insane. like Sam Darnold is balling right now. You have so much momentum and you take the ball out of his hands and you ask Cooper Cup to to to to throw the pass. Like I I it just drives me insane. And it drove me insane when he did the trick play against the Bucks. There’s no need for it. There is absolutely no need for it. But Sam Darnold did not play inconsistent in this game. His interception was one of the most unbelievable defensive. Again, the broadcast did a great job. this was a perfect game to have like true like two like uh football players who are who are really just there to talk ball like they’re uh you know Lewis Reick and uh Dan Orlovski like they they break down the game so much more technically and from an offensive defensive side of the ball. It’s just a different energy than what we see with like a Greg Olsen and Aman and I love those guys too but it’s definitely a little bit more technical and I think they did uh it was a perfect game for this because they really really highlighted how some of these plays unfolded. Um, again, specifically the fumble and the interception. And that interception was just just dirty, man. I mean, in in a positive way, just dirty. I mean, that was unbelievable. And Sam Dorton made an unbeliev I mean, that pass was actually perfect. Um, it was just a a better defensive play. That’s not inconsistent play. I mean, Sam’s connection with Jackson Smith and Jigba, I mean, is unbelievable. I mean, again, the one play that the one throw that Sam made uh down the line, um where it was third, it was third and seven. Um I think it was third and seven. Uh third quarter, 7 minutes in is what it was. That throw to Jackson Smith and Jigba was just I I don’t think I saw a better throw um the the the entire week. Uh the fourth and one for 20 yard pass uh to JSN again. Like that that’s the one other problem. they’re so dependent on Sam and and JSN’s uh connection that you want to be able to see other other players get involved more, but it’s obviously working for them. Uh and so obviously lean on and and and Sam’s smart enough to know like let get, you know, I’m going to get the ball to my number one playmaker. You would you would like to see other guys get involved as well to open up the field more, but this game was not in this was not an inconsistent game from Sam Darnold uh at all. And again, the one fumble against the 49ers was a great play by Bosa. An elite defensive player game wrecker. Okay. And that’s what happened. And it was the first game of the season. And then again the Bucks, uh, the one interception was such a fluke and was an amazing also blitz call by Todd BS. Like sometimes you just got to shake the hand of the other team. Um but again a big problem with that was also the the the the um the trick play that took points off the board uh and gave points to the Bucks, you know, uh in that game as well. And so those are self-inflicted, you know, it was self-inflicted decisionmaking decisionmaking. And you know, listen, there’s only so many takeaways for from a defensive standpoint because the Texans are such a mess. defenses was awesome and was great and you know all the big stops the third and one the fourth and one like we can praise all that but I just don’t respect the Texans offensively and I actually do like Colin this is what I said yesterday I was like I do feel bad for CJ Stout I I genuinely do because he’s better than what he’s able to do with the Texans and again credit though to the Seahawks where they didn’t really give them uh any real opportunity to show it but they gave them four turnover you know it was like four turnovers and yet the score was still 27 to 19. Like, and that’s what they also kept saying on the broadcast, like you don’t see that. Like, it’s not really possible to turn the ball over that many times and and also score game. Um, and so the the the Seahawks absolutely positively, undeniably need to be better and specifically just decision making decision making. Um, but to say that they’re too inconsistent to be an excellent team or that they’re a good team, not an excellent team, I reject that completely. The juice and the talent and the quality is through the roof. It’s there. The defense and again the coaching is there too. Like that’s also like we saw moments of this game both offensively and defensively, but specifically offensively where you’re like offensive masterclass, play calling masterclass, unbelievable. This is perfect. This is great. And then you have pockets where you’re like, “This is awful. What? Like, what what are you doing? What are you doing?” And I do think that comes with just maturity and growth, right? I mean, I I I’ve seen the Ben Johnson’s. I’ve seen the Shanahans. We’ve seen the Andes, you know, like we we we’ve seen that those play callers and and coaches, they need to grow. They need to develop. They need to mature. They need to make their mistakes. And that is where Clint Kubak, you know, that that’s where Clint Kubak is at this point of his career, right? he’s still going to have plenty of mishaps and make mistakes. You just hope that he can mature right before your eyes and and grow and evolve uh with Sam in this Seattle Seahawks uh offense. But I mean, listen, I look at a game like this and I’m so less concerned. Honestly, under normal under other circumstances, I’d be like for a turnover blah blah blah, you know, like I could I could really rip them for it. And you know there there there is there there are things to criticize which I which I which I believe I’ve done here. But I just don’t watch that game and just say the Seahawks were bad. They struggled. They’ve now come back down to earth s you know like Sam Darnold’s inconsistent. Like Baker Mayfield like that was a bad game. And again I’m not trolling um Baker. I’m going to defend Baker because that was an outlier game for Baker as well. But like and but yet like you watch that game, if you watch both games and you compare both box scores, I’m sure technically Baker probably has like maybe technically uh a better box score, but yet Sam Darnold wheeled and dealed this game. I mean, like he made some breathtakingly beautiful throws throughout the course of the game and he managed this game really incredibly well. Um, like I said, for his own mistakes was just a a brutal uh interception and then, you know, the the the the touchdown was really just he was backed into the end zone, backed in the corner. It was a bad play call uh and a great blitz, bad blocking, and nowhere for him to go. You know, there’s just nowhere for him to go in that moment and it was just you’re trying his best just to like not get a safety there and, you know, he he he he gets kind of tagged with it. Um, but I I see those as as a fixable problem. I don’t I don’t see it as like inherently like, uh, I don’t know, man. Is this team just good enough? Yeah, the team is good enough. It is just up to the coaching staff to consistently put these players in positions to succeed. That’s what it comes down to. It did get ugly at times. No, you know, not denying that uh at all. But, um, this was a tough, gritty Texans defense. Um, and the offense actually did play pretty well, but you there was just a couple bad decisions that that made it look worse than it was. Um, so yeah, I don’t I don’t I don’t think we have to come in too hard to with with with kind of the energy that Colin is is is saying right now. Like he seems to now just be completely like cooled off on the Seahawks. And I don’t watch that game and feel that way. I feel um especially when you look around the league and see how everyone else is playing. Uh I just I think we take things too extreme, you know, left, right, left, right, left, right, up, down, middle. Um cooler heads I think prevail in in this moment of time. But those are just my thoughts. I’d absolutely love to hear yours. What do you guys all think about the Seattle Seahawks? Um, are Darnold and Seahawks flaws a real concern? Oh my god. Good thing I did not see that sentence at the bottom until now because I could I could just rip for another 20 minutes right now. Oh my gosh. Unbelievable. I’m going to just end it here and we’ll make we’ll make way more Seattle Seahawks clips. Don’t worry. Don’t worry. Uh, but let me know your thoughts in the comments below. I'm still confused about the non safety call when Uchenna sacked Stroud in the inzone.
Well, offense was sloppy and left points off the board that they should have had. Texans have a really good defense. We should sign Lockett back now he is being released!
When Hawks lost 2 Sam was Elite. He wins 2, now hes a bum Colin? This guy is so wishy washy.
Very sloppy game. Very disappointed in the play selection and very disappointed in the overall production of the offense. We should be 7-0 and it was 2 costly mistakes by Darnold that pretty much cost us the game. Happy with Sam overall happy with the win but we need to clean some a lot of shit up. At this point of the season we shouldn't be making these kind of mistakes. If we clean them up we are elite until then we are just a pretty good team😊.
If it's a fixable problem then fix it. It's week 7 not week 1.
Good point about Texans #1 d going into the game. Great on creating turnovers.
Wait until 2 weeks from now when Love and Whitherspoon are starting and the Seahawks have their full secondary back. First time since week 1.
Colin Clownshow Cowherd. Very unserious person
Kudos for the Seahawks defense and starting 2nd string backups!
I think Kubiak got too cute with his play calling a bit last night. There honestly was no reason to keep throwing the ball allowing Houston opportuinty after opportunity in the late 3rd and 4th stopping the clock. Play like this against 49ers and Rams youll easy have 3 more loses in the conference.
Darnolds pumpkin moon is half showing
I'm just feeling nauseous with this back and forth flip-flopping by Colin.
He just lost any remaining credibility with me.
Watch him sing Darnold's praises in two weeks when they go up to Washington and Sam doesn't have to deal with Stingley and that Texans pass rush. He'll be the Sam Darnold that was the most efficient QB in the league again.
I was up until 1am watching this game. What hurt us was Bradford yet again. Lucas is trying to pick up the slack that Bradford is leaving out there. Mistakes happen but overcoming them is what happened.
lol Sam had a bad game vs a good Texans d, good thing it’s a team sport and defense had his back, baker had a bad game don’t hear shit about that
Bradford is crap, 27 was not cheating. Oc needz to stop those stupid fake plays. everyone has gone for a turnover. The Dline was freaking awesome. The secondary was lights out. Darnold was gold through out this game. He got smashed as he threw that deep pass for the int. I was so happy seeing this team. Coach Mac needs to tell Kubiak to quit messing around with 1,2 down runs against that texas d. Needs more screens, more short passes and then sneak a run in. Yeah i loved those announcers, damn near best game calls i have ever heard, i go back to65 as a kid watching the old football leagues
He's a click bait merchant, a cheap one at that. Can't stand this guy
Sam played an okay game. His only option throwing looks like JSN. Kupp isn't getting many looks. Horton isn't getting many looks. It seems to be A.J Barner, JSN, Charbonnet show. Darnold needs better ball security. HOWEVER! He is playing overall, very well. The turn over issues are there of course but all Darnold needs to do is be willing to step up in the pocket and run if he has to. I think the Hawks played a good game. Darnold made some mistakes sure but against Houston I can understand that. Darnold coughed the ball up in a fumble once. He was picked off by Stingley in a GREAT EFFORT play. Darnold turned the ball over but he didn't play a bad game in particular.
How can you say Seattle's offense isn't great when they hung 29 points on a defense only allowing 12.2ppg up to that point. Seattle more than doubled their defensive average in one game. Even ignoring the crap teams, the played the Rams/Bucs/Jags to start the season and still averaged only 17ppg allowed. Darnold did what good quarterbacks do, after messing up, he bounced back and made plays, didn't let it become a spiral or a trend. This is easily a top 5 NFL team looking at both offense and defense as a whole.
Can't stop wont stop
Let’s go hawks 5-2 into the bye week…..LFG!!!!
JSN 🐐🐐🐐🔥🔥🔥
LOL..JOSH ALLEN JUST THREW 2 INTERCEPTIONS A FEW GAMES AGO, IS HE RECKLESS😂😂😂
If we can just have better ball security then we are fine it wasn't even that bad to think bout it cause the Texans have a top three defense or somewhere close to that if atleast top 5 mininum
Can someone explain K Walker III to me? His numbers can be impressive, but his runs only happen when there is a lane wider than my next door neighbors ass. When the red carpet isn't rolled out, Walker can't make a run – he never surprises and makes something from nothing. Time to move on from Walker, ASAP!
Weird take by Cowherd and disrespectful to that Texan defense. They’re still the number one scoring defense this season and our 27 points were the most a team has put up on them so far. Seattle made some mistakes, but Darnold still looked good from what I was seeing. Idk just an overly extreme takeaway he had from this game. My only takeaway was our front seven are great and JSN is amazing.
Bro I literally watched this mf praise Darnold all year wtf 😭😭😭😭
So, Tampa got stomped by Detroit! Is Baker all of a sudden not Elite? Colin is so inconsistent it makes me wanna puke listening to him!.. Sam is gonna keep Ballin out Colin! Great game Seahawks, you just beat a top defensive team!…
Colin picking chiefs… surprise!!!! This guy has a boardwalk from one band wagon to the next!!
#Sam put in 27-pts! Both Seahawks Offense and Defense worked together to win the game!
What I assume is Kubiak possibly heard the outside noise of being too conservative in previous games by running the ball too many times towards the end of games and taking the ball out of Sam's hands even though he was ballin. Kubiak prob felt he wanted to prove that they can play either style and still win. This is prob why there were some unecessary forced passing plays.
