San Francisco 49ers Get Some BAD NEWS That They Can’t Afford + Did The 49ers Find A Big Solution?

We have some bad 49ers injury news that I want to expand on here on the show. A big development for the Niners moving forward and did San Francisco discover something pretty meaningful on Sunday Night Football. It’s all coming up here on the 49ers report. My name is Chase Senior. So glad all of you are hanging out here with me. Earlier today, I put up the most insightful Niners Texans preview that you’ll find here on YouTube. Really doing a deep dive into both the Niners and the Texans. Big game coming up on Sunday. Be sure to check that video out. And don’t forget to hit that subscribe button. We preview every single NerS game, but we also give you very insightful, informative, entertaining, thought-provoking Niners coverage, bringing you shows every single day, year round. And let’s begin here. Bad news for the Niners, which was revealed last night. I talked about this a little bit in the preview, but this deserves to be talked about for a few minutes here because of the implications that it has for this ball club. Bryce Huff injured his hamstring against the Atlanta Falcons. And I’m not sure how this is possible, but somehow for the 49ers, which obviously they’ve dealt with so many injuries over the years, they always have these players seemingly who play in games. They play well in games. Sometimes they dominate in games. They finish games and they seem fine. Then the next day, Kyle Shanahan takes to the podium and says, “Yeah, that player who starred and played really well, he’s now out for a couple of weeks.” Bryce Huff dominated the Atlanta Falcons. He was a part of a Niners defense that generated 22 pressures on Michael Penn. Helped to change the game. And Bryce Huff has been a game-changing player for the 49ers all year. Now he has a hamstring injury and he’s out for a couple of weeks. And for a quick twitch player, you always hate to hear about some of these soft tissue injuries because they can linger. And with the hamstring, you never know how long it’s going to bother him. And right now, the 49ers only have these healthy defensive ends on their roster. This is both on the 53 and on the practice squad. Mike Williams, Sam Okuanu, Travis Gibson, Robert Beal, William Bradley King. Ladies and gentlemen, the 49ers are in a spot right now. They’re without Nick Bosa. They’re without Fred Warner. Now they’re without Bryce Huff. At some point, I know Robert Sal has done a great job, but at what point does it become too much to bear? I think the 49ers need to make a move. They might need to rush to make a move this week. And if they are forced to rush it, shoot. I mean, if they have to give up more to get a player sooner because they need bodies, and I’m not talking about some fringe body, they need a quality body there, then John Lynch, you got to do it because it’s one thing to survive without Nick Bos and Fred Warner, right? But now you’re also down Bryce Huff, who this year, as I predicted, is having a breakout year with San Francisco. Reunites with Robert Salah, and he’s been awesome for this team. overall PFF grade of 82.3, pass rush grade 81.4, run defense grade 65.7. He has 19 pressures on 135 pass rush snaps, 15 hurries, four sacks, and nine stops. And it was so great to see the collective effort that we saw from this Niners defense against Atlanta on Sunday night where the Niners had those 22 pressures and two sacks. And now once again, just like we were talking about after the injuries to Bosen Warner, other people are going to have to play out of their minds are going to have to step up. Sam Okuanu, five pressures, one sack against Atlanta. Bryce Huff, five pressures, one sack. The rookie Alfred Collins, he had three. Dwinnersy, Jordan Elliot, Kevin Given, two. Tatum Bethune, Chase Lucas, Mike Williams, all with one pressure. And this game coming up on Sunday, Niners going to be going up against the Houston Texans. They are now road favorites after that Texans ugly loss on Monday night against the Seattle Seahawks. And without Bryce up, it stinks too because this Texans offensive line stinks. He would have had another opportunity to eat for this Niners defense and hopefully the rest of the defensive line can eat. But obviously down another really important body. Let’s talk some Niners offensive line here. Matt Hennessy replacing Jake Brendle on Sunday night. I’ll give credit where credit is due. Jake Brendle played pretty damn well before he injured his hamstring against the Falcons. But is it an addition by subtraction? Because we know who Jake Brindle is. He was a journeyman and he’s an average center who isn’t really strong at the anchor. Can get pushed around and bullied by stronger interior defensive linemen. While he did play better against Atlanta, Matt Hennessy replaces him and it gave the Niners some juice at the center position, some athleticism, and Matt Hennessy is not some scrub. Played his college football at Temple University. I’m wearing a Temple hoodie right now by the by by the way, which is funny. Um, and he was a third round pick by the Atlanta Falcons. Now, it didn’t necessarily work out for him with Atlanta because of injuries, but when he was on the field, he played pretty well and he had a couple of really impressive reps against an Atlanta defense, which by the way has a much improved defensive line and one of the better statistical defenses in the NFL. And Matt Hennessy passed the test, man. And maybe the Niners found something here with him being an upgrade over Jake Brendle. 20 pass blocking snaps, no sacks allowed, one pressure allowed, zero quarterback hits given up, a 97.5 pass block efficiency, a 79.2 pass blocking grade, 64.1 run blocking grade. I’m excited to see what Matt Hennessy can do at center for the Niners moving forward. And then there’s Dominic Puny, who all year has been bad. And against Tampa Bay, it got to a point where he became a borderline benchable player. He needed a bounceback game for him mentally and physically against Atlanta and he did bounce back against the Buccaneers. Vea sununded him and Dominic Puny gave up six pressures and six hurries. He was so much better against Atlanta. And what the Niners did do, they managed his knee injury that he had suffered during the preseason a little bit more during the week as far as his practice schedule. If that’s what it takes for Pun to be ready for game day, got to continue to do it because the ners badly need him to play better. He was awesome as a rookie. The decline has been surprising in year two. Could have something to do with the injury, but if that is the case and it is injury related, let the man sit because I was impressed with what he did against that good Atlanta front. Still to come here on the show, did the Niners discover something on Sunday Night Football? We’ll get into that coming up just around the corner. All right, let’s get to this. Did the 49ers discover something with their ground game against the Atlanta Falcons? And this is something that may have been tested out and in the works the previous week against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but it didn’t yield crazy results. And this is the 49ers decreasing the amount of zone runs that Kyle Shanahan has called. In weeks one through five, the Niners ran zone in this patented outside zone scheme 61.2% of the time. The last two games against Tampa Bay and Atlanta, you see how much that number has decreased. The zone running plays went down from 61.2% to 42.6%. What you saw, and we all noticed this when we were watching the game on Sunday night, how physical and bruising the Niners ground game was, how quick McAffrey was to get up field and run in a north south direction. that changed from Kyle Shanahan and he deserves credit for this adaptation and this adjustment is that he called more power and gap runs. And when the Ners ran power, San Francisco averaged 7.1 yards per carry per Sumer Sports, I looked this up on nine carries against Atlanta. All year, this Niners ground game has been one of the worst rushing attacks in football. 32nd in yards per carry, 30th in rushing yards per game going into Sunday night. That is so shocking for a Kyle Shanahan offense when he can hang his hat on the run game and the run scheme. And how often have we seen this Niners team on offense be able to dominate teams, wear down the opposition, finding success on the ground? And so to start this year, it was a big mystery. Why can’t the Niners run it? I personally think it’s because of the offensive line. And last week we talked about this huge topic on the show, how Christian McCaffry’s yards before contact this year compared to 2023 down drastically. And it’s because the interior of this Niners offensive line was getting pushed around. They were not winning their one-on- ons. They were not holding up well run blocking. But when you run more power, I think it tapped into the physicality of this Ner’s offensive line. And for Christian McCaffrey, instead of having to display more patience, he was able to see hole, hitole, and get north and south. And this is so big for this Niners offense as a whole and the passing game. If this Niners offense can become more balanced, they become so much more difficult to defend. Because prior to the Atlanta game, yeah, M. Jones was averaging more than 300 yards passing per game and that led the NFL. He still leads the NFL in passing yards per game, but there was no balance to this offense and the Niners had become predictable. You knew they were going to throw it most likely and you knew they weren’t going to find a lot of success on the ground with chunk plays and M. Jones was going to throw it quickly. You start to establish the ground game, it can naturally open up the pass game. It makes the quarterback shop easier. Then it also opens up play action. Hopefully this is something that continues in this direction. Don’t forget to give me a follow on X and Instagram, Chase Senior. I’m always talking Niners here. I’m always talking Niners over there. Give me a shout.

  1. Why are we always talking about the defense. Robert Saleh got his wishes 5 straight draft picks on defense. Let's talk about putting more points in the first half of a game.

  2. Thanks Chase. I was there Sunday night and Bryce Huff played a bigger part than just the QB pressures and sacks. He ran down Bijan Robinson twice on run plays and was un-blockable on the edge. The falcons had averaged 136 yards rushing for the season. Bijan went for 170 on the Bills. We held him and Algiers to a total of 62 yards for the game. Penix was 1-10 when pressured. Our D-line set the tempo and Huff was "Him" all night. We need that dominate piece on the edge. The kids are putting in work on the interior line. Post game, Lynch hinted off camera about possible moves.

  3. When Mac 10 is under center like Joe Montana the Niner are light years better. The defense dosen't know if it's a run, pass, screen, draw, sweep, QB sneek, reverse…you get the picture. The shotgun is a losing game unless your QB is Roger Staubach, John Elway or Tom Brady.

  4. They overworked Huff and at the end of a game where he played double what he usually does. Aggressive violence necessarily means more injuries, especially if you have him do double overtime

  5. All the injuries occur in the legs. Shouldn't someone look at what training is affecting players compared to other teams? There are too many injuries affecting legs. New training group?
