I set out to write about how generative AI is playing out in the NBA and how it raises concerns about generative AI in K-12 education.
After writing it, I have more concerns about Daryl Morey. The list of his mistakes since joining the Sixers is impressive.
Full disclosure: I am a Knicks fan.

Morey has been a great gm. Anyone who was here when that Ben trade happened understands how getting someone as great as Harden wasn’t even seen as possible at the time People wanted to dump Ben off as soon as possible for players like CJ mcCollum. Which was nothing compared to a player seen a superstar in Harden
He also inherited a team that had what seemed like a untradable contract in Al Hordford and within a day or a week or whatever he was able to get rid of it.
He signed Paul George which again at the time was a consensus obvious signing that everybody wanted to make
And let’s not forget this guy drafted Maxey, McCain, Edgecombe and traded Caleb Martin for a guy like Quentin Grimes. I mean you literally can not do better then that. Morey has his flaws like any other GM but I remember when guys like Elton Brand and Colangelo were running the whole thing and Morey is in a completely different league compared to those guys and it might be a unpopular opinion but I would not want any other GM to run this team
We really participated in the destruction of the environment and raised everyone’s electric & water bill just for 2nd round exits and Paul George 💔💔.
You clearly know how much the Sixers *shouldn’t* have offered Grimes, but you failed to mention how much should the Sixers *should* have offered Grimes.
Go ahead, tell us how much Grimes is worth when he’s a RFA, no other team is making offers, he’s played almost no mins with our franchise cornerstone, and he’s been a glorified tank commander.
Thanks for your concern, Knicks friend! I think I speak for everyone when I say that we are all heartened to know you are out there bravely being concerned for our team.
I respect one’s principles for not wanting to use AI and all, but this article is slop all the same. Suggesting that the Paul George signing was bad because Allen Iverson was more intense is such a bizarre non sequitur.
Morey is using LLMs as one tool among others. Like anybody working in an information-heavy field, he’d be a fool not to. They have serious flaws in mimicking human judgment, but they can add tremendous productivity gains through compiling relevant information orders of magnitude faster than a human or regular search can.
That was an awful read. You really use the word “critical” in your blog name? Clearly it isn’t critical thinking in any way.
schizophrenics are more coherent than that article
What I don’t understand is how you could link the Pablo Torre clip that ends with a joke about NBACentral tweeting “Daryl Morey uses ChatGPT for trade advice”, completely miss the point and then write this drivel that reads like your K-12 education could’ve used some work
Like as someone who works in machine learning the explanation he gets into is truly sooo unremarkable. I am almost positive any NBA team with an analytics department makes use of a similar approach to drafting and free agent signings.
It is ironic though that articles like these are essentially just using an LLM the long way (lazily aggregating other people’s content, misunderstanding some portion of it, and finally misrepresenting the content into some slop for whoever ends up reading it)
