The Philadelphia 76ers Backcourt Is SPECIAL…

There are a lot of fair questions and doubts about the 76ers this season. Will Embiid play half the year? Is Paul George the washed version of himself we saw last season? Can they return to the playoffs? But one exciting turn is that the back court looks elite. The 76ers had their preseason finale tonight and it was a big deal because of Embiid’s return to the court. But it was the young guards that stole the show. We already know Maxi is an elite talent. He averaged 26 a night last year and has already made an all-star team. He showed up tonight, finishing with 27 points and seven assists. There’s a lot of anticipation heading into the year for third overall pick VJ Edgecom, who I already compared to Dwayne Wade. He had 26 points and five steals tonight, scoring 13 straight points for Philly at one point. He looks ready to be a real contributor right away. Despite Gwent Grimes just officially being resigned like a week ago, he doesn’t appear to have any rust. He added 22 points and five assists in this game. It was 20 plus for each of the young guys in the back court. All three are 25 or younger, setting up Philly to be stacked for the future. That’s not even including Jared McCain, who looked like a budding star in his own right last year before going down with injury. The 76ers seemed to be in the back end of the Joel Embiid era, but they’ll have successfully set themselves up for the future in the meantime. It doesn’t look like we’ll be going back to a process level rebuild anytime soon. The Philadelphia 76ers have found their back court of the future. Now, let’s take a deeper look before we get more into Philly’s stacked backcourt. This is not the same slow, methodical Sixers team we’ve seen in years past. Sure, they were up against a short-handed opponent on the second night of a backto back, but the difference wasn’t about who they were playing. It was about who they’ve become. The Sixers made a clear choice this summer to get younger, faster, and more athletic. And already that decision is starting to shape their identity. At the center of that shift is VJ Edge Cone. From the opening tip against Minnesota, he was everywhere. three first half steals, jumping passing lanes and blowing up sets before the Wolves even knew what hit them. And the second he got a stop, he was gone, sprinting up the floor to give his teammates an easy outlet. Tyrese Maxi found him over and over on cuts with Edgecomb finishing at the rim like a natural. His confidence only grew as the game went on. After a cold start from deep, he buried a smooth catch and shoot three in the third quarter, then followed it up in the fourth with a tougher, fading corner jumper off a loose ball. Nothing but net. One of the preseason talking points has been how Edgecomb treats playing hard like a skill, and it showed all night. He hounded Minnesota for four quarters, flying past, over, and through defenders until his final shift. When he checked out, the Philly crowd made sure to let him know they noticed. But this wasn’t just the VJ show. Adam Dembona got a surprise start with Nick Nurse leaning into a true too big lineup for most of the first half. It wasn’t perfect. Spacing and fouls are still real issues, but it supercharged their defense and rebounding. Dominic Barlo added to that energy, crashing the glass relentlessly and pulling defenders out of position. the second quarter moment where both Bona and Barlo went up for a putback dunk at the same time. You’d be hardressed to find a recent Sixers game where that happened. With this kind of athletic depth, the mandate is simple. Run. Maxi got a handful of easy buckets just by outracing Minnesota. And the play of the night might have been a bona block that led to a Maxi outlet pass capped off with Edgecomb soaring in for a two-handed slam. That’s what makes this team compelling. Even without Joel Embiid or Paul George at full strength, they’ve got an identity beyond just waiting for their stars to bail them out. Last year, the Sixers were defined by one hope. Pray and be saves us. This year, it’s different. Faster, louder, more fun. Thanks for watching. I’m Herm. Have a good one. [Music]

  1. Great video title. No annoying, “it’s not fair” like they broke some rules or something, or everyone is “scared” forgetting it’s just bball, not a slasher movie

  2. Sixers can't even maximize their roster and salary cap. We are playing handicapped. On a 15 man roster, we have 14 men and 1 podcaster. We are paying the podcaster $50 mil a year.
