DETROIT RED WINGS FIRST PLACE TEAM | Woodward Wings, October 17th, 2025
Welcome to Woodward Wings. I am Justin Satawa. I’m joined by special first place Woodward Wings. Hope no one has that one on their big card. Just like we all thought. Exactly. Red Wings currently. Web Wings. Red Wings are currently 3 and one. This is being recorded on Friday before the Red Wings play Tampa Bay, which should be a great game. I will be in attendance. I’m very excited. This hasn’t been looking good so far this year. the what? Vasillesi. He has not looked good. He’s not looked good so far this year. So, he’s getable. He is giddable and so are the Lightning, especially with how the Red Wings are playing right now. We get Gibson in that tonight, which I’m am excited for because Sean brought up something that that we didn’t talk about on our postgame show the other day, and that is the fact that Cam Talbot is playing great. Yeah. However, John Gibson’s better. John Gibson is better, and you can’t rely on Cam Talbet. We’ve seen these stretches before. time and time again from Camta where he comes out and he’s playing like a bonafide number one goalie in the NHL. He’s really lightened up, but then he fades. We have seen the sample size enough where we know it’s going to happen, but he did what he needed to do. And Gibson is your number one. He went out there, he got [ __ ] shelled. Like it was bad. He looked out of place. He looked timid. He didn’t look like he was reading the right lanes. And then you have Cam Talbot go out there and win you three games in a row. That is what you need him for. That is what cuz that’s going to happen to John Gibson again at some point this year where he’s going to have a bad game. He’s old too. He’s not what he used to be. You need Camtal but to be able to keep you alive for a couple game stretch while he gets his [ __ ] together. And that’s exactly what he did. So hopefully John Gibson goes out there. He stops, you know, 24 25 shots tonight and and then he’s good to go. And Mlullen came out and he said it. He said that Cam Talbot earned the right to play that second Toronto game. It was always planned for him to get two games after John Gibson, but he earned that that that last start and he deserved it because he played unbelievable. Shout out Cam. But at the like we said, he is a spot starter. He is when there for when you need him to be and when you need him to be there, he’ll be there. But Gibson tonight needs to take a step towards becoming a 9point and higher say percentage goalie. And I think he will. I think that as we get more and more away from that first game, the more and more we realize that was just an off night by the entire roster. Yeah. The entire roster wasn’t ready to go. No, absolutely. Like we said, they showed up and it looked like they thought uh that Montreal was going to give them that game because it was the home opener because it is the 100red-year anniversary and they looked timid. They looked slow and they got bullied and it was just a flatout bad game. the rest of these games against much more physical teams than Montreal. When you look at a big physical Toronto team and you look at a big physical Florida team, even without a couple of the other guys, they still obviously have Bennett and and and and uh Reinhardt and [ __ ] uh Verhagy and Rodriguez and all of those guys that could still do some damage to you. They didn’t look timid. They didn’t look like [ __ ] They were out there playing physical and strong through the neutral zone, making sure they weren’t getting bumped off of their spots so they could go out there and run offensive sets efficiently. So, uh, yeah, it was it looked like they needed that first game, that kind of slap in the face and they woke up and they’ve been playing great hockey for the past couple games. Absolutely. And the odds for at Vegas on the Red Wings make the playoffs do reflect that as well. They have gone down from plus 250 to plus 175. Wow. So they are showing life in Vegas as well, which is what you want to see. You don’t want to see them stay the same. Like the Bruins have the same even though they’re buzzing a little bit, they have the same odds as they had before. So I think that’s good to see. I I believe we are trending in the right direction. Um in terms Absolutely. in terms of this roster. Absolutely. They’re playing fast. They’re playing physical. We talked about it on the postgame shows. You’re getting very very good contributions from the guys that you brought in. Like Appleton leads the team in goals. He’s obviously got a gamewinner. You look at JVR, that that second period of hockey against the Florida Panthers might be the best period of hockey I’ve seen the Detroit Red Wings play in 10 years. Like, I’m not even joking. They had at one point it was nine scoring chances to nothing. They dominated in the offensive zone. They were strangling the Panthers out. They scored a couple goals. It wasn’t just like opportunities that happened. No, they cashed in on a couple of them. And it was because of guys like James Van Remsteike who were playing on the PK and the PP and in five on five. Dylan Larkin won you a tough a ton of clutch faceoffs either in the zone or on the penalty kills. So uh that second period against the Panthers was an extremely impressive outing for the Red Wings. Absolutely. And they’re showing the style that Mlen wants them to play as well. Every aspect of the game that he preaches, they are playing at a high level. right now. You see the way that they’re not backing down. They didn’t back down from Florida physically at any point on in the game. You also are seeing the they are dumping and chasing, but not to the extent that they were under London. They’re doing it with a purpose and they’re doing it with aggression and with physicality. Like when you were dumping and chasing under Loland, you were hoping that it would go long or hoping it would continue around the boards, not going in and diving on the forche. They are diving in on the forche. They’ve got guys like Emtt Finny who are just [ __ ] shooting in there like a missile and digging pucks out of the board and and setting up great offensive sets. Like they they are actually getting into offensive sets and creating plays, which is something that we failed to see from them time and time again over the last two years, which is so crucial to being able to manufacture those five on five goals when you are in zone trying to attack. And it’s it’s so good to be a Red Wings fan, man. I’m like gushing. Yeah. They are playing great hockey. They’re playing great hockey. And obviously, it’s an extremely small sample size, but this is what you wanted to see with Todd Mlen having the offseason, having the training camp, having the preseason to actually establish his system, what he wants to do, and what he wants to bring to this team. And you’re seeing them be uber physical, even like they were out hit by the Florida Panthers, but it didn’t feel like that because they weren’t letting the hits that the Panthers were laying on them throw them off stride or destroy their whole sets. When you were looking at London and Blashel teams, if you phys if you out physical the Red Wings, they would back down and and they would tuck their tail and turn around. But no, they have been fighting back, not letting it affect them offensively, and it’s been awesome. It has been awesome. Something that has not been awesome has been Lucas Raymond. Obviously, he’s continued to be dayto-day. He has been skating with the team though. Has there been any word on today? Today? No. Yesterday? Yesterday he was skating, but it was as a fourth forward alternating with Appleton on the first line. Yeah. Well, I I mean today as in Friday because it’s yesterday for them. No, they have not posted. Probably not playing tonight. Yeah, probably not playing tonight, which That’s fine. Don’t you keep him out tonight. Give him the day off on on on Saturday and then have him on Sunday. I would I would rather them take the most amount of caution possible when it comes to Lucas Raymond because he is such a catalyst on this team. He is your best off. He’s your best forward and he is humong. you saw in the the power play, the power play kind of fell apart a little bit when he went out. He’s so important to the power play. He’s so important and shout out to Mason Appleton for holding it down on the first line in his absence, but like he is your best forward. He has grown so much defensively and he’s gotten a lot of the Zetterburgian assets of protecting the P. like he’s not this big huge physical imposing presence much like Zedberg wasn’t, but he uses his body to win puck battles and to protect the puck so well and that helps him become such a good decision maker and distributor of the puck. So, uh, you need him back because he looked really good to start off this season. Hopefully, like you said, if he needs the rest of the week, if you have if he has to miss Friday and Sunday, that’s fine. Let just make sure he’s good. He’s good to go. Especially because going into this stretch and even Mlullen in his his presser yesterday talked about how like hard they knew this this first end of their schedule was going to be even if they were to lose to to Tampa and to Edmonton three and three with this schedule still a very good start. You are still going to be in prime position in the East and and so if you keep Raymond out I’m not too worried Sunday and then Buffalo’s after that. Yep. Okay. Um, I would love for him to be ready against Edmonton. Yes. But if he’s not, again, those are big, physical forwards. So, you don’t want to put him out there with a banged up shoulder. No, you do not. But someone who is doing a bangup job on that first line is Dylan Lin. Dylan Lin has come out and he has been I mean, not boo Dylan Larkin. Boo the pun. I was booing your pun. That’s fine. I don’t really care. I love Dylan Lin. Dylan Lin has been playing extremely well. He has come out this year. He has been carrying the load in terms of Yeah. taking pucks from zone to zone with great entries. He has been able to control the puck when it is in the offensive zone. He’s doing a lot of great things being a great distributor with Raymond out. I I’m very proud of Dylan Lurin stepping up. I mean, he’s been in the news for the entire off seasonason. I’m sure he did did not, you know, blissfully pay attention to it, but he knew that the talks were out there and now he’s come out. He’s playing well and you got to give him credit. He’s doing what a captain does and for everyone who says that he doesn’t deserve to wear the stand on this jersey, he does. He proves it every day. And he’s playing like the 1C that he can play like right now. And we’ve seen this is a such an impressive arc of Dylan Lin’s career from last year to where we are now. Like seeing him call out Steve Eisermanman in the media like he did like some people didn’t like it, but that’s what a captain does. Yes. And also a captain doesn’t let that affect his relationship with anybody. And Steve Eisermanman knows that and that’s what Steve Eisermanman said that because Stevie knew he [ __ ] up with the free agents and went the trade deadline last year. So he didn’t let it affect him. And Dylan Lin hasn’t come out come out and pouted or anything. He’s playing at the best level of his career through four games. Yes. And that’s what you got to do because like you said, he was talked about a lot. He’s the captain. That’s what’s going to happen. And he knows that. He’s been wearing the seat for a little while now. Now he’s comfortable in it and yeah, like you said, he’s been physical. It doesn’t m you take away the best forward on the team and you give him a rookie and a fourth stringer and they’re still looking like the best line out there. And that’s because of Dylan Larkin. Because of Dylan Larkin, that’s what a one seat does. That’s what a one he elevates the players around him. And you see the the the Patrick Kane goal on on the penalt or on the power play. That’s because of Dylan Larkin winning that faceoff and getting it over to Kainer in the slot. He has been so impressive. Not only and I know it’s just four games. Does look like he’s improved his face offs as well. It looks like he’s improved his face offs especially with the like important ones. The 30 seconds left in your own zone on the penalty kill. You need to win this face off to clear the puck. He did. 30 seconds left in a five on three. You got to score quick to take advantage of the other power play as well. He did it. Those are the the moments that you need to see and hopefully he can continue this for the rest of the year cuz he’s playing great. He is playing great and I I can’t wait to see what Lucas Raymond is able to hopefully elevate Lin even more. If we’re talking about the the third piece of that line finally bringing out the 1C in Dylan Larkin and elevating Lucas Raymond to the level of consistency that we’re looking for. That is how you make the playoffs right there. And EMTT Finny looks like that guy. He does. He does. He looks like he’s doing everything that he needs to do in order to support those two guys to playing at the all-star level that both of them are capable of. and and that’s exciting. But two other guys who I think are playing in all-star caliber right now are Mo Cider and Simon Edmonson. Both of them, not just one, both defensively, they both have been absolutely locked down and and it needs to be pushed into the mainstream media, especially Simon Evans because a lot of people do know about Mo Cider. He he was a one that called her. Everyone’s been waiting for him to blossom, but Simon Edmonson has had a ve much more quiet path into being one of the premier defenseman on this team. But he is also playing to that level and it’s only helping ASP. Yeah. And we talked about how much that’s going to help ASP because that’s an insulator for him to [ __ ] up. We’ve seen ASP make some rookie mistakes. We’ve seen him blow some assignments, miss some coverages, miss some reads. But Simon Evansson is there to pick him up because he’s, like you said, he’s playing like one of the best defenseman in the league. And I know again it’s four games. You got to continue this for a long, grueling NHL season. But we’re talking about what we’ve seen so far. And what we’ve seen so far is Simon Evansson looking like he’s taken a step to be an upper echelon defensive player in the NHL. His size, his length, his ability to use his stick and skate freely on the back end. It’s so impressive. In the neutral zone, he is getting his uh stick in passing lanes. He is pokechecking people so they can’t get offensive uh sets going. Um this is what I wanted to see out of Simon Edson. This is what I needed to see out of Simon Edmonson and what I expected. Honestly, I I said a couple years ago that I think he could be better than most cider because of his offensive upside. Now, he needs to continue to do that, but we talked about how Axel Saninka and Simon Evson are the fifth best defensive pair in the NHL and Mosider and Ben Sherro are the seventh best defensive pair in the NHL as we sit right now. So, like if if you would have told me that through the first week of the season, we’d have two top 10 defensive pairings, then I would taken that in a heartbeat. And these guys just continue to show the growth and they continue to show that they’re uh really reaching those heights and those potentials that we expected them to. Yeah. And then I have a I have a really funny stat for you. The best offensive uh defensive pair for the Red Wings is actually Docker and Johansson. Shout out Eljo. What is Do they just not have any points? Is it just based off points? It’s based off their goals percentage. No, that’s offensively. Yeah, Eljo’s plus two on the season. Yeah. Where’s Docker? He’s got to be high because you Yeah, Docker’s plus four because he didn’t play that first game. Damn. If you take that first game out, Eljo’s probably plus four, too. Yeah. Damn. Yeah. ASP’s minus three on the season. Yeah. But those were from his turnovers. He’ll he’ll get better. And the one thing that I think is minus three systematically where the Red Wings need to take the biggest jump is in their defensive zone getting pucks out. Yes. That is something they are struggling with right now. Their breakouts penalty. Yes. Sometimes it just completely breaks down and we’re just [ __ ] pucks and and shooting pucks off the glass, which there’s nothing wrong with that in certain situations. However, like one of one of the biggest culprits is ASP. I mean, like straight up, one of the biggest culprits is ASP. However, he’s going to get more and more comfortable turning back, reversing the flow, cuz the biggest thing on the on the breakout is being able to reverse the flow, change the direction, change the way that you are going to go out of the zone. Because if you just constantly go up the same wall, it’s predictable. Especially in the NHL, these players are too good for you just to continuously go out the same side. That’s why when you’re working on breakouts, there’s usually six to eight variations of ways that you can break out. And ASP is your zone breaker. He’s got to play like a zone breaker. He’s got to get the puck and he’s got to take three strides hard, bring some defense to him, and then just move the puck out and clean breakouts will just appear out of nowhere. And that’s the next step for ASP because he already is comfortable defensively with with Edmonson. Edmonson’s holding it down for him now. I want to see him take the puckility. Use his ability with the puck and his skating ability to make plays and get this team cleanly out of the defensive zone. Yeah. Yeah. They need to do that. They’ve spent a lot of time on their heels so far, even in these wins. And obviously that is part of the the growth process of learning how to do that, you know, on the smaller ice. That’s something that you see that effect there. You know, he’s used to having more room. He’s used to having more opportunity and more space to work with, but you don’t on American ice. And you only played out what, a handful of games for Grand Rapids. So, uh, that’s something he’ll learn how to do. He’ll learn how to pick his spots and he’ll get his strides. But he’s a rookie man and there are things that he is going to take a little while to gain, but what I’ve seen out of him so far has been extremely impressive. Absolutely. I thought it was going to be much steeper learning curve and it’s definitely uh credit to Simon Evansson for picking up a lot of the slack, but you could see they love to play with each other. Like all all of these kids have done so much for the psyche of the rest of the team. Like JVR and Patrick Kane playing like they’re still in their prime. You look at at Dylan Larkin playing at a higher level because he knows that these kids are so hungry. And Michael Bran segard like if he had a somebody with a pulse on his line, he would be talked about as one of the best players on this team through four games because he’s all over the place. He is laying hits. He’s being aggressive. He’s he’s fanned on a couple shots, but he’s playing with Andrew Cop and JT Conffer. And I saw some some very niche Red Wings Twitter account. I forgot who it was, so I’m sorry. I I didn’t get the name, but whoever you were, you were It was great. They said that that line is now going to be called the Dirty Mike and the Boys line because it’s Bren Michael Brennard and then a couple old [ __ ] and I just can’t wait for Danielson to be healthy, who is skating with Grand Rapids right now. So, we’ll see what happens with is he going to be the 3C? You move Conford down to four maybe send that’s fine. Let just make sure he’s good. he’s good to go. Especially because going into this stretch and even Mlullen in his his presser yesterday talked about how like hard they knew this this first end of their schedule was going to be even if they were to lose to to Tampa and to Edmonton. Three and three with this schedule still a very good start. He’s doing a lot of great things being a great distributor with Raymond out. I I’m very proud of Dylan Larkin stepping up. I mean, he’s been in the news for the entire off seasonason. Like seeing him call out Steve Eerman in the media like he did, like some people didn’t like it. But that’s what a captain does. Yes. And also a captain doesn’t let that affect his relationship with anybody. And Steve Eisermanman knows that. And that’s what Steve Eisermanman said that because Stevie knew he [ __ ] up with the free agents and went the trade deadline last year. So he didn’t let it affect him.
