The Mariners Season Just Ended So Badly Their Players Were Screaming In Agony Postgame
For one fan base, it was always going to be exceptionally painful. And in yesterday’s game, it ended up being Seattle’s, who came just eight outs short of going to their first World Series in franchise history, only to have the walls collapse in around them in a manner that was so painful, one of their star players could be heard literally screaming in agony over it postgame, having gone further than any other team in franchise history. When things began, you wouldn’t have assumed this would be how it would end up as Julio Rodriguez let off the contest with a double down the left field line shortly after being driven in by Josh Naylor. They were off and rolling, but Toronto seemed unfazed as the team who managed to rebound from a two games to none deficit tied things up almost immediately after on a two-out single from Daltton Varo. The Mariners seemed like they were going to return the favor in the second when they got backto-back singles to lead off before JP Crawford moved both runners up on a sacrifice bunt, bringing Leo Revas to the plate, a player who’s pretty good at putting bat on ball and not chasing. But this would not be the case in this AB as he went way out of the zone on a slider for strike three before Victor Robas grounded back to starter Shane Deber. After a fairly quiet bottom of the second, Jay-Rod came up with his second big hit of the night, a 423 ft tank to left center field, giving his squad back the lead. This is where he would stay going into the fifth as M starter George Kirby proceeded to settle in a bit while Louis Varlin came in to work out of a jam in the fourth. That meant that when the big dumper hit his fifth home run of the postseason, Seattle had managed to extend their cushion out to two runs. This takes us to our first real notable managerial decision of the night as Kirby, despite being at just 65 pitches and only having given up one run to that point, got yanked in favor of righty Brian Woo with Dan Wilson starting the team’s bullpen timer potentially a little bit early. But Woo would do his job for the next two innings, including inducing this double play to JP that featured a really cool leap over the base runner. This takes us all the way to the seventh, where after a nice escape job from starter Kevin Gossman, one that was partially self-induced by intentionally walking Cal Raleigh with nobody on, Addison Barger let off with a walk. Then Isaiah Ker Fa single to center field. Toronto then decided to have their nine-hitterter Andre Simenez push both over with a wellexecuted sacrifice, chasing Woo from the contest entirely with Wilson deciding to bring in Eduard Bazardo to face George Springer. This was his second controversial move as Springer had already seen Bazardo multiple times in the series and had been 0 for three with two strikeouts versus the Mariners closer Andre Munoz who in the last game of the season was obviously available. This decision ended up proving massive almost immediately as on the second pitch of Bazardo’s outing, Springer got a fast ball middle in launching it out to left center field to give his team the lead with one swing of the bat. The Mariner offense had to answer back, right? They had to put up some kind of fight, but it wouldn’t come in the eighth when another starter, Chris Basset, retired the side in order. Then after Munoz pitched a scoreless frame with the help of a line drive double play, arguably one frame too late. It was all left up to Seattle’s 891 hitters versus Jeff Hoffman. Revas did a good job to fight to a 3-2 count, then struck out on a fast ball. Pinch hitter Dom Kzone only got the 22 before doing the same. This brought JR to the dish with his team’s entire season on the line. How would one of the faces of the franchise perform in the biggest moment possible? Well, as you can see from this screenshot, not very well as he would end up striking out despite seeing six pitches, really nowhere near the zone. And just like that, the Blue Jays were going to the World Series for the first time since 1993. And the Mariners were heading home. This obviously was exceptionally painful, and you could hear as much during Brian Woo’s postgame interview when a player screamed so loudly in the background that it actually interrupted Brian being caught clearly by the clubhouse microphones. Having gone further than any other team in franchise history, Aaron Lavine would later tweet out that he thought it was Julio himself. It’s obviously going to be a long offseason for a Seattle team and fan base that will now have to grapple with the fact they had a two nothing lead in a best of seven series and then a 3-2 lead going into game six and just couldn’t manage to put this thing away. As for Toronto, I want to wish them good luck going up against the Dodgers. I anticipate a really good series and they’ve truly earned a shot at playing in it. All right, everybody. Dan Wilson is to blame.
Even when they went up 3-2 in Seattle I knew deep down that there was no way the mariners would close it out in Toronto
I’m a Jays fan, but understand how painful it must be for Seattle players and fans. I take no pleasure in their loss. Sports can be so cruel. Mariners had a great season and it sucks that anyone had to be eliminated.
I'm so glad they lost. Was getting sick of Cal Raleigh and his pathetic self driven story that the league tried pushing. They would've gotten stomped by the Dodgers anyway, but it makes me happy Cal still can't say he has made the world series.
There is a lot of Jay Fans that feel Brian Woo’s pitch hitting Springer was intentional. The way Springer was struck and Woo just turned away casually, was very suspicious. In the final game Naylor jumping to stop the ball from a double play. Cheating usually catches up to the team. Karma’s a bitch. 🇨🇦🇨🇦
I am a Mariners fan and I was pretty invested the last 5 or so years and especially this one. I put aside a lot of time to watch their games and my girlfriend was really starting to complain about it. I thought it was worth it if they could reach their first World Series and potentially use some magic and win against the Dodgers like anyone before last year did. However, after game 7, I realize she was right. I’ve invested so much damn time into this fucking sport and I’m fucking done. I done watching and I see all the extra time I have that I could’ve spent more productively. I’ll be in a nursing home or dead before I see them blow it at this big of a stage in about 24 or so years from now anyway.
Especially since you ,woo the pitch that almost took out springer n thought you did the job 😅but springer got the last laugh young woo 🤣
It's an epic choke to be up 2 games to none and going home for three straight and then lose in 7. I think they got ahead of themselves thinking that they would win the series after the second game.
That’s called passion
So close to their first WS. I feel for their fans.
How fitting that Springer, an Ex-Astro, did the deed of continuing the curse.
For once this one went the Jays way
it is just a game , get over it, you still get paid your millions upon millions, it isn't like their income dropped, get back to the golf course an you will be better in a few days.
Don’t worry Seattle fans, LA will crush the Jays
Classic Wilhelm scream.
Was there a trash can banging before that homer?
Your beloved trendy analytics may have cost the Mariners the game.
Damn, almost as bad as Buffalo
Great recap!
Bazardo had faced springer multiple times, and that hr was coming, Woo was a better match even if he would’ve failed it would’ve been a good decision
Now Bazardo is the villain and Woo is free of guilt
Poetic justice for Springer hitting a home-run, after the Mariners fans had cheered the night before when he took a pitched ball in the knee.
Sounds kinds squachy to me
Let's Go Blue Jays
Toronto Fan here. Seattle was a tough team it was close and to go to a game 7 means that it could have gone either way. Its a tough loss. I hope we get to play them again in the finals next year. We just had the luck on our side this time around.
F them and the fans!
Mariners 🤝 Canucks
Forever cursed Cascadian franchises
someone stubs his toe and a fake story is born!
they had a great season. of course it hurts for those fans, but they had a VERY successful season
Dodgers paid for this. Glad to see Jays finally make it.
manager Yanked Woo superficially without question
Maybe there can be a little revenge mixed into this narrative. Remember when Toronto dropped the wild card game to Seattle after being up 9 nothing? That one hurt for a while.
Toronto fans know how you feel. They are also Maple Leaf fans
That was probably just Scherzer screaming at Scenider again after stubbing his toe or something.
"AAAAAAUUUUGHHHH!!!"
that off camera scream was hilarious 😂
Couldn't Springer have been intentionally walked?
I was not happy with pitcher Woo taken out when Springer came up to bat. Woo and Raleigh knew how to pitch to him and Woo earlier had struck him out. I think that was what changed the whole game. Springer hit the home run to take the lead and Toronto held on to win.
Seattle deserves nothing but misery
BigJigglyPanda ahh scream 😂
To be fair, maybe the scream had nothing to do with the game – maybe Julio just realized that Hector finally looked him in the eyes…
That sound you heard was the metal gear solid GAME OVER screen 😁
Dodgers vs Mariners not competitive
I'm a Jay's fan. You boo Springer when he's hurt. That's poor sportsmanship. Bad Karma. Karma waited until the 7th inning of Game 7 to bite the Mariners in the ass. I love it. God Loves the Blue Jays.
I'm a Jays fan, and have to say the Mariners played amazingly throughout. That leaping double play for instance. I had to look back at 3rd game highlights, because we were looking cooked after the 1st inning, especially down 2-0.
DA MARINERS LOSEEEEE
Well Seattle now you know how we feel. If Woo was left in the game Seattle wins this game. You have no idea how many times that idiot Schneider lost games for the Blue Jays because his analytic told him to make a change. I'm not sure how up to date his analytics are. Who cares that Little has been pitching like shit over a month now. Who cares that Dominguez is a total crapshoot and and more likely than not to give up one or two runs immediately. Who cares that Rodriguez is even more of a crapshoot. Schneider is certainly no Cito Gaston that's for sure.
Could this be considered the Bud Selig curse? If the Brewers can't make it, then the Mariners can't as well.
You and me both, brother. You and me both.
