If you watched our episode yesterday, our first segment was on the aggression of the Royals this off season. What level would that aggression be? Would this be a team that could put itself top 10 in spending, maybe top five, or are they going to go more along the lines of little moves here and there? I gave my stance. I believe this will be an aggressive offseason for the Royals more so on the top 10 half of it where you know you are one of those top spenders. You’re one of those busier teams uh of the off season. Now I don’t know yet what players they’ll be targeting. Hence why we do segments like this players that might fit. Does it make sense? Would they be in the price range? And I feel it would be kind of ridiculous of me to talk about being aggressive, to talk about spending big and then the very next day do an episode on a very affordable one-year deal type of guy that isn’t going to be that interesting to talk about. Now, that player may be a likelier sign for the Royals than who I’m going to bring up, but that’s the fun of the off season. You can dream a little bit until those players find other homes. So, if the Royals are going to go big, if they’re going to spend and they choose to go the free agent route and not the trade route, I feel the biggest fish they can get for the outfield, a realistic candidate would be Cody Bellinger. Bellinger coming off of an incredible year in New York, posted a five war season. He had close to 30 home runs. really a tremendous replacement for Juan Sodto who many people told the Yankees they couldn’t replace that production and you’re going to actually try to replace it with Cody Bellinger. It was laughable at the time because of how good Juan Sodto was and Cody Bellinger was good as well and coming off of a fine year with the Cubs. In fact, a fine couple of years in Chicago. But that’s Juan Soda we’re talking about and it’s Cody Bellinger uh that we are comparing him to. So, I feel that the Yankees, and I I hate to give him credit, but we have to give them credit when credit’s due. That was a fantastic signing for them, and he was a big reason why they were able to have the season that they did. Now, it didn’t end where they wanted to, but Cody Bellinger was not the issue. He really wasn’t. You go over the numbers that he posted this year, hit 272, had an OPS of 813, an OPS plus 25 points above league average, and that’s now three straight seasons of having a well above average season offensively. The other reason why this is the biggest fish they can get is he is an outfielder. He can play all three outfield spots. If you wanted him in left field, he could play left field. You wanted him in center, he could be in center. You get the point and where I’m going with this. the other guys that would be big fish, right? You would have to to make it work with the guys you already have. They wouldn’t be bad signings by any means, but if you went after and got Kyle Schwarber, well, Kyle Schwarber is a DH only. So, if you’re going to DH Kyle Schwarber every single day, that means that Salvador Perez is behind the plate every day and it therefore takes it bats away from Carter Jensen. Now, would I rather have Kyle Schwarber in the lineup over Carter Jensen? I would. But long-term, I would rather have Carter Jensen in there pretty much every single day and having somebody else that could play the field in left field so that we’re not worrying about taking at bats away from some guys on this team. You also have your Pete Lonzos of the world. Pete Alonzo doesn’t make any sense for the Royals because Pete Alonzo is a first baseman only. Alex Bregman who we talked about would make sense for the Royals. You would have to do some shuffling though. He’s a third baseman and a second baseman. You’d have to move some guys around. It wouldn’t be the end of the world. But with Bellinger, you could sign him and put him somewhere and you’re not worried about it. You have already filled a hole on the team. And as I said, the fun part of this segment is we get to dream a little bit. What if the Royals did give that big contract? And Cody Bellinger is 30 years old. So, it’s not as uh favorable to give a 30-year-old a five to sixyear deal cuz you know that you’re going to be probably paying for that. No pun intended there. Year four, year five, maybe year six of that deal. No, it’s it’s just always going to be that way. We know that when players reach their mid30s, they’re just going to have a a downward trajectory and it it’s going to hurt your lineup at some point. It’s going to hurt your payroll. But the Royals need to operate with the mindset of we may be giving this big contract out to a guy like Cody Bellinger, but we’re really paying for the first three years of this deal, right? We really want to maximize the team we have now, and Cody Bellinger could help this team a lot. And I I’ve come to this realization on my own that no matter who I bring up in free agency, there will be multiple people in the comments going, “Ah, that’s a terrible idea. I I would never give that type of contract.” Because the beauty of doing this podcast is I get to see all of your opinions, who you believe is a great fit, who you believe is a good trade target. And that’s the fun part about this because it also sparks ideas for me. And Cody Bellinger was brought up last off season because he was a free agent. Yankees gave him the or he might have been actually acquired in the trade. I believe he was still with Chicago and they had some trade happen or it was a free agent signing. It’s aside from the point. It was his first year in New York. That’s what I do remember. But Bellinger is that guy that I feel if you are to throw your money at you are to get the most value out of a player, it feels like that would be the best option. Bregman, you would get incredible value. But Bregman took that one-year deal with Boston or the the multipleear deal with the opt out, right? The opt out in year two so that he could make $30 million a year. Are the Royals going to be that team to give Alex Bregman $30 million a year? I would say it’s doubtful even though they were seen as a sleeper team. What that entails, I I really don’t know. Is Cody Bellinger a $30 million player? I don’t believe so. He will be an expensive player. It will be a multi-year contract, but you were willing to give a big contract to Anthony Santandere last offseason as your middle of the order bat. Why not try it with a guy like Cody Bellinger this off season? I mean, I really feel that his bat would play nicely at Kaufman Stadium. Having that flexibility defensively helps Matt Cotero and this coaching staff out a lot. As we’ve said with so many targets this off season, he can hit top of the order, middle of the order. I don’t know if I would put Bellinger, you know, after the the six hole, but I would love to see him hitting in the top five spots of the lineup and think about having maybe a lineup where it goes Michael Garcia, Cody Bellinger, Bobby Wood Jr., and Vinnie Pasquantino, then Salvador Perez. I mean, one bat like that can change how you feel about the top half of your order. And yeah, it it is that expensive contract that he’s going to have to play well right off the bat. You’re not going to give someone making 20 plus million dollars a year the benefit of the doubt all the time. You’re not going to say, “Well, you know, it’s a slow start in April, but we know he’s great and he’s going to be fine, you know, as the months go on.” Yeah, that may be the case, but guys making a lot of money had the pressure reform immediately. And Cody Bellinger hasn’t gotten that massive contract in a long time. he is and this would maybe be the last big contract of his career. Now, there will be plenty of suitors. And the last point I wanted to say here, because I’m sure there’s people going, “Well, how could the Royals outbid the Yankees, right? How could the Royals outbid one of these other top spenders, maybe it’s it’s the Phillies, maybe it would be the Dodgers, god forbid, maybe it’d be, you know, one of those other East or West Coast teams that see Cody Bellinger season and go, we need an outfielder as well and we need that middle of the order bat.” The reason I could see the Royals maybe swooping in is is Cody Bellinger is not seen as the big fish for everybody. Kyle Tucker is. Kyle Tucker is that corner outfield bat that I’m sure the Yankees are going to try to go and get as well. and Cody Bellinger would probably be the the casualty, if you will, if they go for Kyle Tucker and land Kyle Tucker cuz you’re not going to be paying Kyle Tucker to play left field and then you’re going to be able to pay Cody Bellinger, not the same type of money of course, but a lot of that money to go play center field. Maybe they would, but you would have an odd man out. Maybe they would go with Trent Gisham on a cheaper contract, go for Kyle Tucker, let Cody Bellinger walk. Now, there will be other teams that miss out on Kyle Tucker and then pivot to Cody Bellinger. But who knows, maybe the Royals could throw their weight around a little bit and try to be in on a guy like Bellinger because if we’re talking about free agent outfielders, as I’ve said before, there’s no perfect fit. But valuewise and not the Kyle Tucker money that we’re talking about, Cody Bellinger is is in that wheelhouse of if they’re going to go big, give out that massive deal. I feel he makes the most sense out of what’s out there in free agency. Do you believe that would be the right move for the Royals? Let us know in the YouTube comments below. Let’s take our first break of the show. When we come back, we have our World Series decided and my goodness was it a brutal game for the Mariners last night. I want to recap that a little bit and just, you know, give my sympathy, give my condolences to Mariners fan cuz here’s the harsh reality. You never get over losses like that. World Series talk, ALCS talk coming up next on Lockdown Royals. You are tuning in to Lockdown Royals and the Lockdown Podcast Network. Uh Falcons are a seven and a half point favorite. I am going to take them to cover that larger spread. And then in the Jets and Bengals game, I’m going to go money line again. Uh actually, I’ll go money line and cover here with the Bengals. Six and a half point favorites over the Jets. feel Joe Flacco is going to be able to light it up over his former team and a winless New York team over there. So those two picks I will have Falcons money line and covering over the Dolphins and Bengals moneyline and covering of course over the New York Jets. If you had the pleasure of watching last night’s thrilling game seven in the American League Championship Series, you would have seen both sides of of of the coin really with winning a game like that and losing a game like that. You saw the euphoric moment of George Springer leaving the yard in the seventh inning, a three-run blast. Uh, we can debate it later on in this segment if that was bigger than the Jose Bautista home run in 2015. I’ve certainly got my thoughts. I know you do as well. You saw the the joy, the pandemonium, the chaos at the Rogers Center when Springer hit the home run. You’re also seeing the depression, uh, distraught looks on the faces of the Mariners players. just everybody in Seattle. Those those shots of watch parties and the one at T-Mobile Park. I mean, total dejection. And you had seen it through the first six innings that quite the opposite. Mariners fans are getting anxious. I wouldn’t say dejected or depressed at that point because they knew they were still in it, but anxious, you know, uh uneasy, not as chaotic as it got there in the seventh inning. Uh, but that is the beauty of baseball. It’s also the horror of baseball because when you see both sides of it, certainly from a bystanders point of view, right? I’m not a Blue Jays fan. I’m not a Mariners fan. And to see that, you can feel joy for Toronto. Maybe you have your ill toward Toronto and you didn’t want them to win in the first place, but as a baseball fan, you can see a a franchise that hadn’t been in the World Series in 30 plus years. I mean, Royals fans could somewhat sympathize and not being to the postseason or the World Series in uh 30 plus years or 29 to be exact back in 2014. So, you can understand the strain and frustration of that fan base knowing that man, we’ve had many teams that were close could never get it done. And then to hold on to that one-run lead. I mean, I said I didn’t have a a rooting interest in this game. I had butterflies in my stomach that entire ninth inning. I mean, that was so fun to watch and that’s what you hope for. and in the postseason where you almost put yourself in the shoes of those two fan bases and what they may be feeling. So for Toronto, I tip my cap. I nobody really picked them to win the American League. I certainly didn’t. I had the uh Mariners, I believe, coming out of it. So the Mariners, I was close. I wasn’t even close at all in the National League side, but on the American League side, I I didn’t give Toronto much of a chance. We didn’t talk about them enough uh really in the regular season to be picked as a World Series favorite or for me even to consider them being a World Series favorite. They were a top seed, but everybody said, “Well, you know, they they have that early exit written all over them.” And credit to them, they smacked the Yankees and then came down 20 or came back from being down 2 and then came back from being down 3 to2 in the ALCS. And so now to lead me into the other point here with the Mariners, I cannot imagine waking up this morning, going to work, going to school after watching that last night if I was a Mariners fan. I could not imagine it. And our final segment will be about losses that haunt you. But the harsh reality of this because you’ll have the the friend, the parent that tells you, oh, you know, give it time. Th those wounds will heal. You’ll feel better in a couple of weeks. Your life goes on. That’s that’s the thing with sports. These games are played again. You have a chance to do it again. But that’s also the other part to this. You don’t know if you were going to get back to that point again, right? Even though it’s a baseball podcast. I’m going to bring up what Dan Campbell said in the 2023 NFC Championship game in San Francisco. Detroit had that miracle season, became America’s darling, and they lost. They blew that game. They were up big. blew that game late and he said maybe the most candid and honest thing I’ve ever heard a coach say in a postgame presser which was that might have been our only shot. We hear coaches all the time, well we’ll be back, right? We’ll be back. You don’t know if you’re going to be back. And for a Mariners franchise that has never been to a World Series, I cannot imagine the pain. I really can’t. You had a year where they were unbelievable, so talented, great chemistry with that team, front office, put the chips in, they made deals at the deadline, an elite pitching staff, a great bullpen. And if you would have told me after that AU Heno Suarez home run in game six, the grand slam or game five, excuse me, the grand slam, the final home game of the year for the Mariners, if you would have told me the Blue Jays win that series, I would have called you stupid. It would have been harsh and I don’t call people stupid, but I would have had to have said that. I would have had to have talked you off the ledge of believing the Mariners were going to blow that series even though they were going back to Toronto and they were down three to2. They had won the first two in Toronto and all they had to do was win one of them and I thought they had the pitching matchup in both of those games. And when you have a moment like that, it can crush the other team. But Toronto is a team you just couldn’t bury. even as uh we saw in in game seven where you had him buried for six innings and then George Springer who’s done it so many times in his postseason career flips the game upside down. But I truthfully feel so gutted for Mariners fans cuz back in in 2014 with the Royals in game seven of the World Series to be 90 ft short of tying it, you had that moment creep into your head of will we ever get back here? And of course they did. They won it the very next year. So they lived up to that we’ll be back. But that’s not how sports always works. You have a team that makes a remarkable run and then you’re not back for a long long time. And for a franchise that yes was looking to win the the whole thing, everybody’s goal is that, especially when make it that deep into the postseason. Sometimes just winning your league, you can, you know, fly a flag for. You can celebrate that. We were the American League champs. The part that stings about this is you don’t have that luxury of even saying you won the American League pennant and your World Series drought continues. And I thought Cal Raleigh summed it up in the way that many Mariners players are feeling. I hate to use the word failure, but this was a failure. And when you get that close and you have a lead in that series, you were two wins away two games into this series and you blow it. I I can’t imagine what they must be going through and you can feel for that a as you know a fan base that went through a lot of suffering for a long time and the Mariners had an extraordinary year not just record-wise and how deep they made it but the season some of their players put up. Is Cal Raleigh going to hit 64 home runs again? Maybe he does. But there’s also a high chance that never happens again. There’s a chance that the Mariners don’t go allin like that. at the deadline. There’s a chance they don’t get Josh Naylor back. There’s a chance they don’t get Au Haneo Suarez back. Jorge Palano. Which is why in baseball they always say, man, when you get there, it is so vitally important to cash in on everything. Like when you have everything go right, you can’t end the season and say, well, you know, we gave it our best effort and we can be proud of that. Yeah, you can be proud of that, but those are the type of seasons you got to capitalize on cuz it feels like that magical season. Mariners still put together one heck of a run. Uh they became a lot of people’s favorites. That 15 inning game was remarkable, but last night you saw both sides of it. Unbelievable joy for the uh the Blue Jays and just unbelievable horror for Mariners fans once again. Who are you going to pick to win the World Series, the Dodgers or the Blue Jays? Let us know in the YouTube comments below. Let’s take our final break. When we come back, we are going to talk about the losses that haunt you and if you can really get over them. And I scrolled through I, you know, Twitter has a way of doing this where if you search, you know, a team’s video, they start giving you on the for you page, they start giving you, you know, that fan base’s Twitter. And I saw a lot of Mariners tweets last night and nobody, and I don’t blame them one bit, I didn’t see one tweet that was so thankful for the ride, so thankful to to watch this team and and you know, have this October. It was truly a remarkable memory. And it is one of those things where a month from now, two months from now, you are able to say you are you were able to say publicly. And maybe you’re just a a total optimist and you’re never, you know, brought down by these things. You can get over losses quickly. Unfortunately, I’ve never been able to be that person. I have never been able to be that person to turn a game off and just go do something else and not even worry about it anymore. It is a a personality trait I wish I could take from other people, but I can’t. losses really stick with me and losses like last night never would have left me. I would be telling my kids and grandchildren about that game being the most pain I’ve ever felt in a sports game, right? Not the most pain you’ve ever felt in your life, right? You’ve been through through much tougher, I’m sure. But last night, game seven, no less, to have a lead and then it disappear like that and to be a one-run game and to know you had a series lead. Those are the losses that just unfortunately haunt you forever. We’ve all been there. We’ve all been there, whether it be baseball, basketball, or football, that you have a lead, you blow that lead, and it just sticks with you. And every time you see that highlight, every time Mariners fans will see George Springer, they will think of that moment. Every time they play the Blue Jays, they will think of that moment. In the same way, you know, as a Royals fan, there will never come a time that they play the Giants. I do not think of of Madison Bumgardner. He is the first guy I think about when the Royals play the Giants. Now, if I watch a Giants game on my own, I don’t think about Madison Bumgardner. I might think about Barry Bonds. I might think about Buster Posey. I might think about Tim Lindum, right? I I could think about all those players. But when the Royals play him, it’s different. And when the Mariners go to the Rogers Center next year, first thought they’ll have. And maybe it’s the the earlier you just come to terms, you’re never going to get over it. There will never be a win, even a World Series win, that totally takes away the pain. And Royals fans can speak to this. The Royals didn’t waste any time in trying to cover up the pain of 2014 in winning it in 2015, right? But really, in my heart, as great as 2015 was, and them winning the World Series solved a lot of that uh solved a lot of those issues and cured a lot of that pain, that pain is still there. to lose in game seven, to lose at home, to have what happened in game six, Yordano Ventura tossing a seven inning shutout, the Royals bludgeoning the Giants, and then the very next night they lose by one in game seven. That’s a loss to this day that will never leave me. And I told people at the time and I still stand by it. There is not a win, even a World Series win that will completely it, like I said, if it was the u I’m even blanking now on what will be the best medicine for it, but morphine maybe, right? That’s pretty strong that we’re talking about here. But 2015 definitely masked that, right? I I don’t I don’t think about 2014 every single day. I I don’t think about Madison Bumgardner every time the Royals play a baseball game cuz when you have that flag fly, right? You have it it raised over the Hall of Fame. You know that you won a World Series and you’re not in any kind of drought. You’re not cursed. You won the World Series. But that 2014 team was so special. And to lose in that way, you you never thought they were going to lose. They were just riding this this magic carpet, if you will, all the way to the World Series, sweeping everybody. and they ran into the Giants who they actually had home field over because the Giants were a a lowly wildcard team on the National League side and they ended up losing that game. And so that is a loss that haunts me. The D Ford being off sides against the Patriots in the 2019 AFC Championship game, it’s never left me. And the Chiefs have won three Super Bowls since then, but it never leaves you, right? And that’s a part of being a sports fan. a sports fan that is so invested and you you just put your heart and soul into a team like that. And for the Mariners, they put everything into this team and so you can understand the heartache cuz even though Blue Jays fans are saying, “What are you talking about?” Right? We we’ve had three decades of not getting a chance to play in the World Series, right? We we have been starved for a year like this. And I totally agree with it. But the Mariners have been more snake bitten than you. And so to come up short like that, I it’s just it’s really even and painful to talk about from a bystanders point of view, right? Because you could see the the faces of those fans. Now, maybe you’re listening and you’re an Astros fan or a Rangers fan and you say, “Well, screw them. I I don’t care. I was rooting for the Blue Jays.” And that’s that’s a part of sports as well, right? It’s a part of the fandom. You had people last night that were laughing at at the Mariners’s misery. Looked like it was Julie Rodriguez that was screaming in the clubhouse after the game that was caught during a a Brian Woo interview. Those players understand as long as they play, they will remember this team and they will remember this game. And it it’s what it’s what makes sports though also so glorious. And baseball is the best at it in my opinion cuz it’s such a long season. And if you do watch every single game, I mean, it’s it’s a grind. It’s a marathon. And so when you lose a game like this, you’re almost mourning a death. It it feels that heavy if you are that invested. Of course, there’s some people that, you know, they they might have cried when when the final out happened. Same thing goes in Kansas City when Salvi popped up. There were people crying. There were people on their knees and just face to the pavement. There were people that maybe threw something at the wall, but it’s because you were so invested from the start and now you know that the season’s over. So, I absolutely feel for Mariners fans. I feel for any fan base that goes through that that crushing uh just wrenching loss that you never get over. But I will say this, speaking as someone who’s gone through some heartbreaking losses before, and I know for many Kansas Cians prior to this you dynasty run by the Chiefs and and the Royals winning the World Series, there was nothing but heartache. But let me know in the YouTube comments the loss you’ve just simply never gotten over, the loss that has haunted you to this day. Can’t wait to hear the responses. Belli plays the outfield
When I think about the Giants besides Madison Bumgarner, I think about the 2002 World Series when the Angels won their one and only World Series. Probably because a former Nebraska cornhusker played for the Angels. You can bet I was cheering for the angels that year.
Thanks Jack! I think the Bellinger trade is a great idea! “ MAILBAG FRIDAY QUESTION” I think to move our infield from top ten to top 1 0r 2. This means a gold glove type second baseman. Do you think we can make a move to up grade defensively?
Game 7 2014 is absolutely the worst memory. The home plate umpire was horrible in that game. I'll never stop being pissed about the zone changing every half inning.
Game 7 of the 2014 World Series will haunt me even though the Royals won it in 2015. Looking back, the Royals could have been repeat champions if not for Madison Bumgartner. When the bullpen gate opened and he came out, my hope went up in smoke.
Bellinger is opting out of the final year on his contract with the Yankees. New York won’t be able to make him a qualifying offer because he already received one from the Cubs after the 2023 season. Bellinger won’t be attached to draft compensation and should pull a larger contract than Grisham, potentially in the nine figures.
By the way, he’s a lefty
I’d rather go after Harrison Bader he’s a righty and we need a righty not another lefty
