  2. Don’t know how you choose to define it so it’s black and white opposed to subjective. But there’s a difference between a guy playing multiple spots in the field to get his bat in the line up and a guy who can play multiple spots in the field. You’re not really a utility guy if you’re a liability in the positions you’re playing.

    Playing different positions at an average to below average rate is fine. But burley had a bWar of 1.9 and fWar of 2.1 despite his hitting because his defense is that bad while only playing the 3 positions that are the least athletically challenging. His defense rating on fan graphs is -39.

    He’s a first baseman / DH who often has to play outfield so you can get is bat in the line up.

    Granted if he played outfield all year he’d be eligible for silver slugger there despite how awful he played the position. So sure, I guess he’s a first base outfield utility guy. I don’t know what to think of it. But it feels silly.
