Colten Ellis Set To Make Buffalo Sabres Debut Against Detroit Red Wings

coming for you. You’ve been through the minor leagues and the whole thing and it’s finally arrived. What are your emotions? Uh there’s been a lot of emotions the last couple days um since finding out, but um you know, something I worked my whole life for and just super grateful and happy for the opportunity. Are you going to have family here? Yeah, I’ll have uh quite a bit of family coming. Um obviously my my immediate family and then fiance is already here. Um some of my uncles and a lot of her family, too. and um um a couple other friends. How have you stayed sharp? I mean, you knew you’re going to get a game eventually. I don’t know how early you knew it was going to be this one, but how have you kept yourself sharp? Because it’s been a little bit in between games now. Yeah, for sure. But at the same time, you come to the rank every day. Like you’re playing the next game. I think that’s that’s what’s helped me throughout my career. And um just kind of sticking to everything. I like I I know what I have to do every day. I come into the rank. So, um not looking too far ahead and just taking it day by day is is all part of the process. How have you prepared for this first in the short term, let’s say of the last week, but in the long term as far as your dream and goal of reaching the NHL and doing this? Well, like I said, um something I worked for my whole life. So, there’s a lot of um blood, sweat, and tears that that went into this moment and uh just happy that I get to live the dream that I’ve been dreaming um since I started skating tonight. So, uh just looking forward to it. Just going to take it all in and uh at the end of the day, like time I step on the ice, want to win a hockey game. So, um, that part of the game doesn’t change. Are there are there things you’ve learned just from being around the team these last couple weeks? For sure. I mean, just like whatever you can pick up, how guys take care of their bodies, um, how they approach each day and, uh, how much work they put in. I think that’s all, you know, I’d be I’d be stupid if I didn’t try to soak it all in. So, um, definitely been watching guys and and just pick it up on things they do and and see what works for my game. In that same vein, as a goalie, how do you study and prepare for the opponent you’re facing tonight? Um, it definitely changes from who you’re playing. Like the biggest thing for me is kind of looking at the handness of of which guys they have out on the ice and knowing if they’re a lefty or righty. But, um, obviously you’re aware of every team’s top guys. So, um, just kind of being conscious when they’re on the ice and and just playing the game. the end of the day is we’re just playing a game and um just got to read it as it comes to me. I’m sure you’ve had butterflies before a game. Does it basically get the first shot and they go away and you’re into the game? Do they go away pretty quickly usually? Well, I think build up before the game. Yeah, there’s going to be nerves. I’m human. It’d be be pretty crazy if I didn’t have any nerves, but um as soon as the puck drops and you know the clock starts ticking down, that’s kind of when you get into the game and um you kind of throw all that out the window and and just live in the moment and play the game. spending two weeks in the NHL just the opportunity to watch and soak things in. What has that done for you? It’s been great to just soak it all in. Um obviously getting acclimated to all the shots. It’s nice. I’ve been here for a few weeks now and um just get acclimated to the speed and and you know, guys releases and everything like that. So, um yeah, it’s been helpful to to skate with everybody and and you know, get a little bit of work in um extra work in after practice with guys. So, um, just taking that all in and, um, just using me to help myself. How have the guys treated you so far? It’s been great since I got here, right from the get-go. Um, you know, staff and all the guys have been great and very welcoming. How about the goalenders themselves? Puka Lucan is in Rochester right now, but him and Alex Lion, how how’s that gone? They’ve been great. Um, I didn’t know either of them coming into it, but um, they’ve definitely like welcomed me with open arms and being able to just chitchat with them about different things. um you know we played with we have a lot of mutual friends I guess like the hockey world’s so small so um just talking to them about those other guys that we’ve played with that we both know and um just picking their brain about um you know the nuances of the the NHL have you talked to about scouting this was his team yeah I know I know I know he was here for a bit so I’ll have to get the report from after with

Buffalo Sabres goaltender Colten Ellis spoke to the media after morning skate on October 22, 2025. He spoke about potentially making his debut against the Red Wings that night at KeyBank Center, and more.
