A Look At What’s Going On With The Jacksonville Jaguars Offense | WIll Trades Help During Bye?

And I am absolutely thrilled that you guys uh come along with me each and every day. And if you’re new here, we’ll give you a reason to come back. Let me give you a quick rundown of exactly what we’re going to do today. Um, it’s a Q&A. I asked people for questions. I can’t get to all of them individually, but I kind of encapsulated them all and put I hope that’s the right word, by the way, encapsulated. But I put them all in uh sort of this mixed bag and I pulled out some that I thought I that I where I could extract exactly what you guys were asking and could give you the answer. So, at the end of the show, uh, final word on Trevor Lawrence. Y’all, y’all, everybody got up in a tizzy. This is the only place that you can say something and be accused of saying something that you didn’t say, but that’s fine. I understand it. I’m not mad at any fans for having passion, especially the Jaguar fans. Y’all know that. Uh, we’ll get to the ins and outs of that stuff. Um, how to run the ball more. Uh, you need to run the ball more. That’s how you do it, but it’s a little more nuanced and tricky than that. So, we’ll get into that. Also, trade possibilities for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Uh, that’s where we’re going to start. The Jags need some help. They went out and made a move for Colin Saunders early in the year. He’s been inactive a lot. And, uh, shout out to my man uh, Ross Jackson from Locked on Saints because I was very straightforward and I asked him what it was going to end up being like and it’s kind of ending up exactly. I ain’t gonna tell you what he told me, but the way this has turned out is the way that he kind of expected it to. You say he’s a great guy though, but you wasn’t going to get a whole bunch out of it. And uh uh we haven’t. And uh the Jags still need interior defensive line help. I did not see the Greg Newsome uh thing coming uh when they moved Tyson Campbell. I just didn’t do it. I didn’t see it coming. I I think it was more scheme scheme specific thing. And then it was the one game against the Chiefs, man, where it wasn’t it wasn’t even about the plays that happened. It about the ones that could have happened. Uh, and Tyson would have been the one. They could have won that game. Hollywood Brown catches that ball. He’s still running and they would have, it would have been all over the place and the Jaguars would have been, you know, a team that just blew it. When the Chiefs didn’t have very much hope at the end of that game and he ended up getting up out of here, um, I didn’t expect it. And that that’s what leads me to, uh, who are they going to trade for and what are they going to do? because I think there are some obvious names out there. Uh I think Jacobe Meyer’s name keeps coming up. Uh if that’s the receiver from the Raiders, uh he wants out. U there are a lot of other players where it seems like it’s really really super super obvious that okay, yeah, the Jags seem like they need help in that area. That’ll be a good move to make. It’s not always the case. So, the reason why I’m saying uh I’m going to tell you I don’t know what they’re going to do and I don’t know where they’re going is because I didn’t know about those last two. I had no idea that that is what they were going to try to do and what they were going to uh look to do. So, I I do think James Gladstone and the crew have their own thinking, their own mindset when it comes to this. They got their finger on the pulse of it way more than we do. So, it’s easy to sit here and play, and I know we do it often to to play armchair GM, but when you’re asking me seriously what they should do or who they should go out and get, when it comes to specific names, I don’t know because I know that they’re all about fit. They’re all about what it means for the future. And there’s two things at play here. Are you trying to build the team for the rest of this season, or are you doing it the way most NFL teams do it? And that’s like a dynasty league sort of like they’re not going to mortgage their future. If they get a guy in, it should be a guy that they want because if you only get a guy who’s a rental, then if he works out, you either got to pay him a whole bunch of money to keep him or you’re going to have to go find another person who has a similar skill set. So, is it about patching this thing up quickly or is it about making moves that are actually going to help you in the future? I can tell you one area where you can pretty much forget about them getting any help unless they trade for like last week I suggested Trent Richardson. Trent Richardson. I did it again. Trent Williams because I thought the San Francisco 49ers were going nowhere because they had all of those injuries. Well, every time I say that they win and they have won a couple of games in the road now. So, they’re not going to mortgage or or or swap a whole bunch of parts out. My people in Philly told me that AJ Brown, my man Louis AJ Brown ain’t going nowhere. better be a disaster for them to trade him and they need him to win a championship. And then if you get AJ Brown, you got to give up a whole bunch of stuff that I don’t think the Jaguars either have or willing to give up. So I think you you can forget about about the alpha receiver or this mystery offensive lineman that has value that can help your team. What you going to get? You go you you start moving around for offensive lineman, you get Cam Robinson’s and you get Ezra Cleveland’s and shout out to Ezra because he’s been a lot better than I thought he was going to be. But I traditionally don’t see, and I’ve said this for years, the only way you get impact offensive linemen is you got to draft them and develop them or draft them and they’re ready to go. And even that requires some development, but you got to hit on some people. So, it has to come from internally. And maybe this answers two or three of y’all’s questions. Uh, Wyatt Milm, maybe. I’m not ready to push Pat McCary out like a lot of y’all are. Uh, I think he’s playing with with He’s a little bit banged up and uh he’s trying to It’s not the type of banged up that put you on the injury report, but I think he I think he’s trying to work through some things like most NFL players do. Uh, like Robert Hayes came back last week. Anton Harrison has been banged up. He’s been in and out of games. And you can tell when guys are getting shuffled in and out of games, man, that they just need to regroup and and try to and try to do what they can. What they need is to make sure Chuma Idogga is ready to go and ready to play because he was brought here to be a depth guy who’s supposed to give them a little bit more and then just continue to work with Walker Little and hope that Walker Little continues to play well in a passing game. In the running game, he’s fine. His numbers suggest that in the running game, Walker Little is doing real well. So, um, could there be some help at Edge Rush? that’s where you need to go and call the New York Jets because I think the Jets have a couple of dudes uh that are situational pass rushers that aren’t going to start for you but can come in and help you out a little bit. With their offense being the way that it is, the Jaguars ain’t going to make a move for a backup quarterback. Uh somebody better than Nick Mullins. They’re just not going to do it. I’m sorry to tell you that. You know, I I don’t foresee that happening unless somebody gets banged up or gets hurt. So to to those questions, you got to make sure that you’re not just trying to patch it up. You can do that if you think you’re a Super Bowl team right now and you need that one extra dude to give you that push. But I I wouldn’t be I wouldn’t be so quick to to give up draft capital or um or young players that are still in development in order to go get a dude just because he plugs a spot in a year where you’re still trying to fix things on your own that will allow you to get to the championship. and then you’re gonna forfeit some things into the future. Remember, this wasn’t supposed to be a one-year bill. And I know expectations go up when when when the team started out so well, but you got to not get sucked into if you’re the brass. I believe they can’t get sucked into being uh thinking about things from a micro perspective. They continue to look at things from a little bit of a macro perspective. Um but do I expect them to do something? Yes. I do I I expect them to do a couple of things because they’ve shown a propensity to be able to do that. How do we run the ball more? A lot of people talking about the running game and we’ll get into how much of how much of a culprit the running game is for their recent struggles. In fact, it’s not even the recent struggles. It’s a struggle that they’ve been having all year outside of a couple of games with the offense in general. Although they’re four and three, they were winning games because their defense was showing up and showing out. We’ll get to all of that in just a second here on Locked on Jaguars. All right, today’s show is sponsored and brought to you by Game Time. Man, listen to me. If you need tickets to anything, Game Time is where you ought to be getting them because Game Time is the absolute truth. Like I said, make sure you use the code locked on NFL for $20 off your first purchase. Moving and grooving here on Locked on Jaguars. Way to your team every day. Running through a little bit of a mailbag today. Um, normally my shows, you know, of course, it’s a monologue unless I have a guest or we’re doing a a crossover. U, I do that so that I have 30 good minutes to get clarity so there’s no confusion. Uh, too many times on social media, I can tell who listens to the show and who doesn’t or who is just willfully ignoring what I’m saying. You get accused of saying things that you’re not even saying. And when you try to defend yourself now, the thing that they think you’re saying is the thing that you are saying because you’re defending yourself and not really the initial point. So, I want y’all to know that I know that the the struggles that I have talked about uh have other things that are cause and effect that the cause of it is his and the effect is this, right? So, we’ll get to Trevor in segment number three. I’m going to talk again like I did yesterday about the things around Trevor Lawrence that also have a negative effect on this game. and and maybe even when you look at it from a situational perspective, more of a negative effect. Like for instance, they can’t run the ball, right? Well, can they not run the ball because the offensive line isn’t getting any push? It’s not necessarily the case. It may be uh you don’t win all the time. So, in some of these cases, yeah, they’re getting stuck behind the line and getting stuck behind the sticks. Sometimes calls just are like that. you know, guys outplay other guys or it’s perfect call for whatever you’re going to run. Other times they’re getting behind the sticks because of pre- snap penalties or just penalties in general. They want I think they’re the most penalized team in the league when that happens on first and second down. You’re almost predicated then after that to pass or to throw the ball. What good is running the ball on first and 20 and now it’s second and 18, right? If you run, you’re supposed to be able to run in that situation. kind of catch them by surprise a little bit and get six yards. Now you’re in second and 14. And then if you get five or six after that, well now you’re in third and manageable. Third and seven, third and eight and that’s what you can deal with, right? But once you get behind the sticks at first and 20 because of a holding penalty or first and 15 or in some cases first and 15 and then a holding penalty and now it’s from the spot of the foul is like first and second and 23 or something. They have been getting themselves into that situation so much. And one of the things that I noticed about them early was when especially with this new staff when they get down like that early in the year, they were able to get out of those long down and distance situations. And I was like, well, that’s new. Well, now you have Trevor and you have speedy receivers that have confidence. You’re no longer before under Press Taylor and Doug Peterson if it’s first and 20. Oh yeah, you might as well go get you some ice cream because they’re gonna be punting in three in three downs. It’s not like that anymore. At least it wasn’t like that, right? But when you get into those situations because of those penalties, they haven’t really been behind very very much this year. So that’s not the reason why it seems like they abandoned it. I I want to push this on Liam a little bit because even he said it after the Seahawk game where the Seahawks came in and they were they have a real good front seven. There was cons some concern from their folks that I had spoken with because those guys weren’t all healthy at one point at the same time and they really really were under pressure to perform well and stopping the run and rushing the passer because they have so many injuries in their secondary. So what Liam did is he did what everybody does. He says, “Okay, most coaches, okay, they’re weak in this area. We’re going to test them in that area. We’re going to see. We’re going to They probably wanted to run the ballers against the Seahawks, but they probably wanted to test the Seahawks secondary and then force the Seahawks to kind of start playing the kind of defense that would help and assist the inexperienced guys they had on their back end, therefore opening up the run. You can use the pass to set up the run. The Dallas Cowboys in the 90s did it all the time. If you look at Troy Aman splits and they were known as a running team, Troy Aman would throw the ball the most in the first and the fourth quarter. In the second and third, they would use that time to lean on the teams that they were playing and beat him down. And that’s where EMTT Smith got most of his 18,000 yards in those two quarters. So, you can use the pass to set up the run. The first thing you do doesn’t mean that that’s the thing that you really want to accomplish, right? You can it’s it’s all about setting stuff up and and that’s one of the things that I’ll get to here in just a second. I think the Jaguars have to be more deliberate and come out and say, you know what, nah, we ain’t setting nothing up. We’re just going to get right to our stuff. That gets to another question that someone asked me. Someone said, uh, how does who who’s the best 11 on offense and defense? I’m not going to go through the depth chart. Y’all can do that yourself. All right? and and and circle whoever you think are the best 11 people because then we’ll start debating that and then we’ll have another argument. So, what I’m gonna tell you is this. I think the best 11 means coaches often set plays up. You saw them set up the the little fake screen touchdown to Brian Thomas Jr. against Seattle. That was set up by a lot of horizontal passing and a lot of early screens, right? So, when they did the same thing, it Seattle thought they were getting it and it wasn’t. It’s like a little pump and boom, Brian Thomas Jr. popped out wide open. I think you’re going to see them doing less setup stuff. I think you’re going to see a little bit less of them um rotating guys in and out a whole bunch early in the game just to kind of get all of your stuff out there. So now you can start play calling based on how the other team is reacting. I think they’re going to be really really deliberate when they come back from buy. I think they’re going to be like, “Nope, we’re leading with our stuff.” Y’all always hear me talk about what do you lead with? Nope, we’re leading with our absolute best. I think they’re gonna force the ball to Travis Hunter, and that’s a good thing. I think they’re going to, if they want to run it, they ain’t going to try to set the run up with the pass. They’re going to come out and try to establish the run right away. They’re just going to punch you in your face to see if we can move people, right? and and then once they get you like that and you counter, then they can go to some of these other things that they know can work against what you’re doing. But I what I think you’re going to do is less situational substitutions and we’re just going to nope, we’re going to start this game. We’re going with our best players and everybody else, you’re going to have to be ready when we need you. When somebody needs a blow, but right now we’re gonna lead with the best things that we have. I think that’s a good thing, you know, and they’re trying to figure this out. They’re trying to figure it all out. I also believe that you’re gonna start seeing more Travis Hunter, not only on offense, but on defense. This is where the unicorn stuff is going to come into play because now he should be on boarded enough that he can be in on every single play. I hope, and this is something I said last week, I really hope we get away from the situations where you see Travis Hunter on the sideline in critical situations on defense. the defense makes a stop and then you go to offense and he’s still on the sideline. They got to figure out a way to run whatever they need to run that he knows well you need to run that while he’s in the game or use this bye to really really get him caught up on whatever he has to do. They’ve admitted in the past that they didn’t know what it was going to look like and then they even admitted before where okay he was spending too much time over here. We need to push him over here a little bit and we’re kind of learning our lesson because he’s a little bit behind. This has nothing to do with his capability, his endurance, his want to nothing. This is all about whether or not he knows what he’s doing. And not only does he know what he’s doing, do the other players on the team that depend on him, do they know that he knows what he’s doing? Because they have an expectation. Like Trevor, you throw the ball one way, he goes another, boom, you might have an interception. So, and we don’t need that because everybody will obviously say, “Well, T-Wig, that wasn’t Trevor’s fault.” And that’s where we’re going to go now. I’m going to give you a final word on Trevor Lawrence and uh clarify. The good thing about clarifying this stuff, you can always go back and listen to old episodes to see exactly what I really really said. Uh when I spoke on Trevor Lawrence, uh we’ll touch on that and talk about it in just a second here on Locked On Jaguars. All right, third and final segment here on a mailbag Q&A type of day here on Hump Day. Uh, as we are in the bye week. All right, let’s just get to it, man. It’s been three days now of nothing but back and forth with a bunch of people in the media. Uh well, the fans and the media and um to be honest, I started talking about something Sunday, but is a realization I may have had for a couple of weeks. And my I’m not allowed, if you will, to do this show based on what I want and what my desires are. I have to always come on here and be I won’t say as honest. No, it’s not as honest. It’s honest. And tell you my true feelings. I don’t mind if you disagree with it. I do mind if you think that I’m doing it for some kind of clickbait or I have some sort of agenda. That’s when that’s when I kind of draw the line and I just say, “You and I ain’t going to work out. We need to just unfollow each other. You you move on and I’ll move on. I ain’t got time for it.” Uh because there’s too much of that nasty stuff going around in in stuff that doesn’t relate to sports. And I just I choose not to participate in people that want to uh communicate with each other that way. So that that’ll explain uh ain’t nobody running from smoke. I’m running from smoke and I’m the one that started the fire, right? And other people in the media. What you’ve seen though is other people in the media start to say out loud what a lot of people have been saying behind the scenes. What you’re seeing is um and it looks like we’re picking on somebody and it’s and and it’s coming out of nowhere. It’s not. It’s not. There’s a very very wellrespected person that told me after week two or three we were actually standing up. I had to stand up sometimes because of my hip and my my back. And I was just stretching in the press box and and this person said, “I don’t think they think he’s very good.” And and I said, “You know what? I I wouldn’t go that far. I think it’s more of we just have to re realign and adjust what we think.” So that’s when I started calling him Gritty Trev. If y’all remember, I said, “If this how we got to do it, if I like that I like Middle Georgia, Trevor, I want to talk about Sunshine and the Prince that was promised. If this how we got to win, we got to win. That’s that’s fine.” And then he has the game that he had against the Chiefs. And I said, “There he is, Mr. Gritty.” Right? So, it’s a readjustment and a realigning of how I thought we needed to proceed. Right? So over the last two games and and he wasn’t awful. I said, “You know what? That’s that is where we have to be. This this team and if you really pay attention, I was saying those drops, all of those things. There are some quarterbacks, there are handful of people that can kind of overcome that stuff unless they’re playing another great team. He’s not one of them. doesn’t mean that he he he that they need to get rid of him. Doesn’t mean that they made a mistake by signing him to an extension. The one that I agreed that they should have done. The one that I was like, “Yep, I totally get it.” Even though he hasn’t quite shown yet, he’s had so much stuff go wrong. He still has that raw talent. And I said the other day that Trevor still makes throws. And so people that hit me with the what about the throw down the sideline to BTJ or what about the check down and the crossing route to BTJ? What about him using his legs against the Chiefs? And I’m thinking like yeah, you’re proving my point. He can do that. He can do that, right? But the guy that everyone wants to defend is not a guy that just does that periodically. the guy. Y’all are defending him as if he does it all the time. I said variance. I said highs and lows. I said consistency is his problem. He doesn’t even have to be that high all the time. I just don’t want him to be low as low as he is when he’s low. And that includes those drops from other people. That includes the defense making boneheaded mistakes. That includes him running for his life. I’ve included all of that in my thought process. I’m not forgetting anything. Just because I’m not saying what you want me to say or because I’m not feeling about something the way that you feel about something, which you’re entitled to, go for it. Doesn’t mean that I’m forgetting something or I’m handicapped at something or there’s something I’m missing or there’s something you’re failing to understand. I understand all of that stuff. In fact, I’m not talking about the plays where people drop the ball. That’s clearly on them. I’m not talking about the plays where he’s running for his life immediately. That’s clearly on the offensive line. I’m not talking about any of that. Talking about the things that I see that he does when it’s just on him. I never said that they need to give up on Trevor. I don’t even know where that narrative came from. I never said they need to get rid of him and trade him and start talking about cap ramifications. I don’t know where that came from. I think they can still win with Trevor Lawrence. It’s just going to be different than you all imagined and thought it was. And you’re somehow still holding on to that and you won’t let it go. And I think that’s a disservice to him. I think it’s a disservice to him when you’re expecting him to get to beat Patrick Mahomes or you’re expecting him to beat Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson and even Joe Burrow. I I just think it’s I think it’s the expectation is just too high. And I think the longer you do that, the more you’re going to be disappointed and the more you’re going to blame other people that he’s not that. Even other people that do things wrong. Even a play caller. How many coaches we going to go through before we just realize that the thing that we imagine Trevor Lawrence being, he’s not that I’m good with middle Georgia Trevor who gets dirty and downright dirty and runs the football and fakes the throw and dives and tries to dive into the end zone and gets the ball knocked out of his hand and and even the one that throws the ball when he’s beyond the line of screen. I don’t care. I’m good with that because he’s trying to do something. I’m good with the Trevor Lawrence that doesn’t quite play as clean as we all thought he was going to when everybody was comparing him to John Elway and Andrew Luck and and Payton Manning and Tom Brady. I’m good with the fact that he’s not that. I’m fine. I’d be fine if he turns into some sort of Baker Mayfield Jared Golf mix or blend where he gets strawberries on his elbows and and he just he just does it and it doesn’t look right like like they did when they were 4-1 this year. I’m fine with all of that. Are you? That’s the point. That’s the question. Are you good with it? I never said that they couldn’t win with it. I just said it wasn’t going to look like how it how it’s been looking and that the mistakes that they were making was going to doom this team because he’s not the type of dude and there are very few that are that you can make those mistakes and he’ll be like, “Don’t worry, I got you.” Baltimore scored 37 points or 40 points or something like that on Buffalo and Buffalo still won the game when they were down 15 because that dude that doesn’t have a number one receiver in Buffalo says I got it. All I’m saying is if you think he’s that I can’t help you. That’s not what he is. That isn’t what he is. Can he get help by the coaching staff? Can he get help by those guys dropping the balls? Can he get Yes. But in order if all of those things go away, the Jaguars are super competitive team. But in order to win it, Trevor Lawrence has to be more consistent. Doesn’t mean he has to be that Brian Thomas Jr. throw, the throw that he made the other day to Travis Hunter. It don’t he don’t have to do that all the time. He just can’t do the misses all the time as often as he’s doing now. That’s all I was trying to tell you that everybody got all up in up in their feelings and it ain’t about Trevor versus Travis. No, but you don’t want me to get started with what those Colorado fans are saying about why Travis isn’t getting the ball and I have to fight them off and tell them it ain’t what you think. They ain’t doing him disservice. Oh, they blaming number 16, some of them. And you don’t want me to also tell some of those people what people that support Travis Hunter are what that support Trevor Lawrence is saying. You know what they’re saying? We suck at receiver and ain’t none of our receivers good. See, I sit back and I I let all of these folks chirp and then they all come turn in on you when really they’re saying things against each other that aren’t even true. Travis doesn’t suck. Brian Thomas Jr. just having a bad year and he needs to fix it. and figure it out. And I don’t know what the hell’s wrong with him, but he he needs to figure it out. Travis Hunter doesn’t suck. I mean, Trevor doesn’t suck. He just ain’t the next coming to John Elway, and I’m fine with it. My question is, if you’re a Jaguar fan, are you fine with it? Make sure you tap in locked on Jaguars. Best pod in da City on bro 💯
It's pretty simple really. Pre-snap penalties are taking away the run game and making an already shaky offense one dimensional and easier to disrupt. It's just simply near impossible to sustain drives when you constantly put yourself behind the sticks.
Is it any surprise that we dropped 31 in our least penalized game of the year?
The Truth Sermon From The Man!
I totally get what your saying
But you are saying He is NOT that guy in a roundabout way
He is this guy!! So basically what you’re saying is we can win some games with that guy but we won’t be good enough to win a championship with that guy because he won’t be able to overcome the obstacles.
So basically what your saying is in a nutshell he’s just ok mid which is fine
So If mid won’t win championships so if that’s our goal than we are in trouble
I’m feeling you he’s not the prince that was promised he is the alcoholic uncle who can’t get clean. He does amazing for short periods of time then falls apart . Gotcha expectations understood
So we the jags can need to be prepared for weekly high blood pressure and possible stroke. lol that’s a joke but no seriously.
In my opinion no quarterback should be paid unless consistency has been moderately to strongly established
My son plays professional soccer and you aren’t even considered unless consistency has been shown.
But obviously they are different sports
Thanks Tony your takes are always 🔥
I’ll reup my high blood pressure medication and starte Trevor Lawrence experience meditation 🧘
Problem is I don’t believe he’s the gritty guy either I just don’t see it
He ain’t baker my brother
😊
I’m on-board with everything you said about Trev.
It's not the losses we had its the way we lost the last two games. I hope that the beat downs are over
