It went from “lol dodgers can never finish the job what a bunch of losers” to “dodgers are ruining the game” real fast
Frank McCourt bankrupt us. Houston demoralized us.
2020 satisfied an itch, but it left something to prove.
The Dodgers became both desperate and methodical following those three major events. This has ultimately culminated in the product you see now.
Cubs fans need to band together and bully Tom Ricketts into opening his fat fucking juicy wallet. Then we could be the evil empire. “People think we have money to spend like the Dodgers and Mets. Truth is we don’t” he says while he owns a whole neighborhood and a bank and the third most lucrative team in baseball.
Anyway money talks and it’s time to bully old tomcat and his whole family
That cheap bastard
Baseball needs an evil empire. That’s what other teams and fans thrive off of.
EDIT: The term itself fuels narratives. You can’t have any heroes without a villain. It’s compelling storytelling that’s baked into our psyche.
Also, “evil empires” drive the evolution of the game as other teams have to adapt their strategies to an organization that buys a lot of high priced talent (though in the case of the Dodgers, also develops it). What happened in Oakland, for example, changed the approach to the game.
One thing is for sure, Pat Murphy remains undefeated
I dont get the Dodgers hate. It’s a great team to watch. Their owner is willing to spend and ASFAIK, they are not doing anything illegal or cheating. what’s wrong with spending money to put up a great team to entertain?
Yeah what an evil empire. They have the best facilities, scouts, medical, invest in their team, invest in their staff, invest in their fans, and spend money to win. How evil. They should be more like the Pirates and bargain bin everyone, barely spend money on anything, or like the Angels, no even have AC in their clubhouse. Those are the real good guys, the guys who don’t spend anymore, and just pocket all the money they make and the shared revenue.
Seriously, the evil empires are the Pirates, A’s, and Angels. Teams with multi-billionaire managers that mismanage their team. Doing everything right to win isn’t evil. You know what did ruin baseball for a lot of people? Stealing signs, not being punished, and than got to watch the players walk around and laugh about it. You know whats evil? Tracking down fans, cornering them, and forcing them to give baseballs they caught. People are so salty they are letting the evil empires win.
Nice try. There is only one evil empire and Shobae isn’t in it
Yeah, totally not the teams that are too cheap to pay their players well.
An actual evil empire (News Corp., owner of WSJ) has nerve to publish this.
Can someone explain to me why the 90s Yankees are loathed/hated (core of four homegrown players + outbidding everyone for elite FA talent) and why folks are indifferent towards these Dodgers teams (fast track to elite Japanese talent, outbidding everyone for elite FA talent, deferring 90% of the salary of best baseball player ever, minimal homegrown talent).
I never believed in the “Yankee hate” but am starting to lol.

That’s ok, I’ll take being the villain
I don’t care if the Dodgers win — I just need the Jays to lose.
As long as it’s not a NY team winning.
Not even close. The Yankees are/were the evil empire because of almost a century of winning and spending. They had been in 5 of 6 World Series and won 4 of them at the time they were coined The Evil Empire. You don’t just take that title because you go to 2 in a row and spend the most. That hadn’t even won this year yet. Not to mention the Dodgers are a very likable team. People are just too sensitive these days. I can’t imagine how they’d be in the early 2000s.
“New”? WTF? They’ve *always* been evil.
Being mad at the Dodgers for spending is wild. Many of they’re players could’ve stayed with their old teams had those old teams paid them.
That said Jays in 6! Also let’s relax with going after Springer for having been part of the ‘17 Astros when you have a member of the ‘18 Red Sox. Not saying cheating is okay but be consistent.
It’s just showbiz, baby.
We already went through this when we watched them sign every free agent. We’ve been saying this for almost two years now. What’s changed? How are people still writing about it?
They’re so damn enjoyable to watch tho
I don’t think a cap will magically fix things but I also feel like it’s unrealistic to just say “lol just spend like the Dodgers” as well.
It would be cool to have a strict floor and cap but I think it’s much easier said than done, there is probably a lot of behind the scenes stuff that needs to be addressed.
NGL I am no longer opposed to these evil empires. If some teams want to spend enough to be competitive, they absolutely should do so. If other teams don’t, they absolutely have the right to exist for the purpose of other teams farming wins off of them.

Baseball was popular when the Yankees were the evil empire. If every MLB team was within five games above or below .500, people would say baseball was dead because there are no great teams anymore.
No, the Dodgers are how most teams SHOULD be operating. I’m not talking about everyone spending a billion on a player. I meant actually developing a good system too to bottom, spending money on facilities, constantly pushing their brands, and many other things. The Dodgers are the best ran sports organization in this country, and sure, I may be annoyed at their fair weather fans but I don’t actually hate the Dodgers. I envy them, hoping my team can operate like them one day, whether we are competing for the World Series or not.
Well of course they’re hated. Yeah they spend a lot of money but that’s because they get 300 million a year from their TV deal alone. They get 300 million because their TV market has 18 million people. How can small markets compete with that? Heck my Padres don’t even have a TV deal right now.
A salary cap could stop this and add parity by spreading out talent throughout the league. Until then keep sipping that copa-cola
How can they be evil , they are paying ohtani 2 million this season any team could have signed him for more
lol
Only in America is a business paying their employees well considered *evil*.
MLB let those assholes in houston keep their cheat *title even though they got caught. Dodgers literally had that title stolen from them. Didn’t hear a peep from most MLB fans who are very vocal about this. Houstons been doing alright ever since, but once a cheater…
Wasn’t a big deal when the Dodgers were slumping, even at the start of the playoffs. Did the Dodgers cheat like houston did? So why is this such a big deal to some folks. Baseball history is easy to google, and every MLB fan should already know it takes more than the top payroll to win it all.
Similarly, the Chiefs replaced the Patriots
Its the deferrals that does it for me. Its not like they are actually spending the money now. This is the difference between them and the Yankees of the past.
Everybody’s acting like LA already has 20+ rings. Not saying it can’t happen…
I always wonder what the guys who put out these articles were doing in 2017. Dodgers were truly swindled out of a WS and “pundits” and “fans” compare spending big bucks to soiling the game
In an era when billionaires run a significant number of teams, it’s a lot harder to cry “Evil Empire”. Plenty of these guys could compete money-wise. They choose not to.
This team is seriously too strong, and as a Japanese person, I wish Roki Sasaki had joined the Blue Jays.
Not new at all
Nah if they have money and they can use it fair play to them
Eh, no. The Yankees still are.
Don’t get me wrong – the Dodgers, just like 28 other teams, suck hard.
My only real gripe with the Dodgers is the deferred Ohtani payment. That’s some bullshit.
The LA Dollars
As a Diamondbacks fan, I really hate The Dodgers. We used to have their number, we would beat them regularly in the desert and in LA, both of which were always packed with Dodger fans. It was so much fun. Oh yeah, we smoked em a couple seasons ago when we pushed them aside to reach the WS! Haha suck on that LA! (actually crying on the inside)
