We are back to even strength. Solid effort by the penalty killing unit here. Tremendous job by the PK units, James, to get out there and show hard work. This is exactly what it takes to kill a penalty and they did an excellent job. And they send it right back to him. Quick pass to Larkin. Scores. There it is. The go ahead goal. And how good of that feel. You can see the s the energy is certainly there and now it’s about dictating the pace going forward. Neck shift critically important. I love that he fights to get tight to the net here. And it’s all about accuracy and a quick release. It’s not about how hard it is and he doesn’t miss. Detroit’s push here in the second is paying off as they now lead by one. Well, you can certainly see the energy shift in the bench and the coaching staff talking to the team about continuing to push. Keep the pedal to the metal here. While you have your opponent down, you got to attack. Big time stop there. You know, the bowler dials in and he redirects the puck to the corner. Detroit’s got the puck. Slides the puck over. Great extension on his part to poke it away. Here’s a short pass. They gain the zone from the left side. And he uses his reach to disrupt the play. Goender covers it up and we’ll get a reset here. Gibson’s been outstanding tonight. Really standing on his head and giving his team a chance. Desperation save. Look at the sequence here, James. I mean, everyone in front of him has to find a way to clear that puck and give the guy a break. [Applause] Buffalo’s had a lot of good looks on net, but they continue to trail here in the second. And they win the face off and set up to go on the attack. Sends the pass over. Appleton’s crossed the line and is on the attack now. Passes it over to Kulich from the left side. They gain the zone. Quick shot. Stones him with the blocker. Delays him again. Throws one up to Comper. He’s got a step that falls apart. scores off the post and in. Well, that’s a real sneaky one that fooled the goalender, James. I had not much room available, but that one perfectly executed. [Applause] This is a prime example of seizing your opportunity and executing because listen, when you’re in your own zone, you got to weather the storm. That’s exactly what happens here. And they get the opportunity when the puck goes the other way. They capitalize, they execute because of their defense. The Red Wings are enjoying things in twos here in period number two. They’ve gone up by two, Cheryl. There’s been a lot of twos, James, and they’d love to get another couple goals to really pad the stats and increase their lead, but right now it’s about Havitz not giving their opponent any life in this game. Denied by the goalender. Gibson’s been solid here tonight, James. I mean, look at his save percentage. He’s been excellent between the crease and that’s making the saves that you need to and you want to at the appropriate moment. Man, his team has been effective going north. Look out. Here they come on the attack. Sends one up to Mloud. Throws it in. Takes the hit. He goes down to the ice and coughs up the puck. Handles the pass. dishes it off and the traffic jam in front. Lost the shot. Scrum along the wall. Pass in front. Picked off in front. Here we go. Off rush here. Detroit’s got the puck along the boards. Pass across to Albertton. How are they coming up here? Thompson’s going off to the box for two minutes. Well, the game is played at such fast rate that sometimes you want to slow your opponent down, but if you take too much ice, it’s going to be an interference call. [Applause] Another chance here on the man advantage. No, they haven’t scored on the power play yet. 100% is not a number that you see typically. So they got to find a way to just stay confident, trust the process and their skill sets. Scrum along the boards [Applause] from their own end trying to kickstart this power play. Here’s a short pass to Raymond on the slaves it quickly over to Mloud. Here’s another hit on the play. He’s going to feel terrible tomorrow. games over and over again. He’s been throttled. Moves the puck on the half wall and the goalender grabs that one for a whistle to try to slow things down here. One of the most difficult things to do in hockey is manage the pulse of the game. And when you’re trailing, you got to find ways to get back in it to fuel, to ignite yourself, to push and dictate pace. Well, that hit right there is sending a very clear message that they’re still in it. Benson’s gliding in for the faceoff as this penalty kill will continue. Nice job tying up his opponent. Gains the zone from the right. Here’s a chance. Goender covers up and will get a face off. Another big face off looming as this power play rolls on here tonight. [Applause] swoops in and grabs the puck with the center tied up in the scrum and the draw here in the late going to the frame. The Red Wings getting solid offensive contributions leading 3-1. Detroit’s won the draw and that’s picked off in the defensive end. Knowing how to protect a lead is critical, James. And you want to understand that you can create, you can still press offense, but you can’t get cute with the puck. You still have to distribute it and find the right openings. He’s picked up on the play. Referee’s hand goes up here. And they’re going to be short-handed once again, much to the secret of these fans. What is that? Is that three in a row now? Yeah, that’s three in a row. You got it. And the fans certainly don’t like it. But it’s not up to them, is it? But now they’re back to the PK. So difficult to get any kind of flow in a game when you’re marching to the penalty box. Detroit’s ready to go to work with a twoman advantage on a five on three with all that ice available and that defensive coverage in the middle of the ice. Have to find a way to pull them outside just a little bit. Sometimes a shot does that. What it does react to the shot and the rebound. Guess what? Open lanes. And they get that puck down the ice. The Red Wings have it against the wall. Here they come. Takes the pass as he banks it off the wall. Huge play in his own end to come up with the puck. Moves it to Raymond. What a blocker stopper point by range by Lieutenant. Puck cleared from the defensive end. Slides the puck across to Larkin. Shot. Oh, how did he keep it out? What a blocker stop by Luke. And that’s a great heads up play by. No, they didn’t like that. And here we go. They’re going to fight. I didn’t like it because it was a dangerous play, James. And you got to play her down as a result. And of course, you got to respond and it results in dropping the mints. Well, is this one of those analogies? You mess with the bull, you get the horns. I guess so. I mean, it’s certainly sending a message, isn’t it, James? I mean, really, it’s about retribution and governance and what happens within the rank and trying to make sure that this gets settled here and there and hopefully it’s done. [Applause] Cops ready for the draw. this man advantage. [Applause] Detroit’s got it in the offensive zone. Just Thompson’s penalty has expired and they’re joining the penalty kill as they remain short-handed. And the puck escapes the zone and they’ll be forced to tang up and that pass is redirected and he elects to play the puck. angles it over to Mloud. Tries to dangle and the puck skips away. The Red Wings kick it along the wall. Tries to feed it over to Mloud. Oh, what a block. He’ll get a P on the back from the coach when he gets off. If he can get off and that goes off someone up front that doesn’t reach the net and they continue to fight for that puck along the wall and that’s kicked up from the scrum. gets the puck in deep. The Red Wings gain possession along the wall. Quick pass to Raymond. The Red Wings played along the wing. Detroit’s got possession of the puck. Breads it perfectly and comes up with the takeaway. Quick pass across to Russ. The Sabers penalty killers come up huge. That’s a great job on the power play. maybe could have had a little net front presence in order to screen the goalender. As you know, the goalender came up huge there with all those chances along the half wall with the puck. Oh, and a good textbook hit there. Siders going to have to keep his head up, James. I mean, he caused that injury at hometown player and the crowd is frustrated and they’re booing every time he touches the puck. Takes the feed up ahead. Oh, a quick little pitch pocket on the play. skates across the blue line, works it across to Kulage and they turn it over in the neutral zone. Beautiful softer pass and a strong effort on that play. Here’s a short pass to Kulich. Norris carries the puck in his own zone. Here they are on the attack. Slides it diagonally to Timmons. risky claiming the paddic works and that body. Oh, it’s another consecutive save. Key rules for the game of hockey. One of them is you have to be aware of your surroundings and have your head on a swivel. He isn’t. And he takes that huge hit. Pes rings left the bench and is heading down the tunnel and took quite a hit there. And there’s head contact. We know that’s not good. They have to follow all protocols to make sure that he’s okay, you know. And and the good thing is is those protocols are in place now, Cheryl, compared to what we saw years back. And they’re in the final minute of the second. The Sabres gain control of the puck against the wall. Angles it over to Zuker. gaining momentum along the wing. Hooked away in the offensive zone by Zuker. Along the wing, up the neutral zone, tries to feed it over to Dali. The Savers looking against the half wall. Takes it to the right. Big time save. Oh my goodness. Well, throw technique out the window. This time it’s all about the competitive will to get to that puck. Oh, hell. A save like this, it’ll wake up your entire bench. I mean, this is a game changer, James. Talk about change the momentum of a game and a timely save. That’s one right there. Buffalo’s had a lot of good looks offensively, but they have run into one hot goender, which is why they trail late in this second. and gets a little boost to come up with the punt from off the wing with both centers tied up. Got a hold of it along the wall. Shots him down in the sequence of saves. I love how he’s in a set position here, James. You can see that he gets to the shooter and that makes the second save easier. Here they come on the attack. Shot him with the Red Wings will play it in their own end. coughs it up at center [Music] and that brings the second period to an end. Both teams will go back to their rooms and get a quick breather while man there’s a lot of fans looking forward to this intermission action coming up here. If you have the best decorated car or home, you could win ride tickets to an upcoming game. Ready, set, go. Oh Byum’s going to be out for the remainder of the game here, James. And that’s tough news to hear. I mean, earlier in this game, he was injured, but the likelihood of him returning is nil now. And he’s such a critical piece both within the room and on the ice. Hopefully, he’ll be okay. And this is just short term. And he’s got the answer for that one. The key to being a great goalender is not giving up second shot opportunities and it’s playing the rebounds to the corner. He does an excellent job here. And the puck’s kicked free. The Savers scoop it up along the boards. And he’s got that one. Scrum ensues along the boards. Dene’s got a hold of the puck behind his own cage and it’s a quick pass to Bolson. Takes control of the puck. Detroit’s Bruce Center in the offensive end. Sneaks by the puck check offside the call. We’ll get a face off coming up. Here’s a change. Bergrren’s been dancing with the puck on his stick all night long here. I really feel like he’s been a driver of play. He’s had multiple good looks on net and finally capitalizes. Love that he didn’t get frustrated. Love that he continued to get to the pockets on the ice and he gets rewarded for it. Kessle Ring’s not going to be able to return to this game here. James, we just got updated that the injury suffered earlier is going to keep him out. Unfortunate break there for them and they’ll have to push on through for the rest of this one. They go on the attack from the left side. Went for the dirty Daniel. It goes sideways. Edmonson’s got a lot of flash to his game in particular with his hands and the ability to manipulate his opponent, but he gets caught on that one and the puck dies on the stick. Shot handles that one. Quick pass across to Quinn into the offensive zone down the road and now he moves it to Pumper. Handles the puck. Buffalo’s got a hold of it against the wall. It’s a fancy footwork to kick it over to his teammate. Buffalo’s in now. The Red Wings have a hold in the defensive zone. works it across to Edmonson. Great use of the twig as he pokes that one away. The Sabres carry it along the wall. Here’s a shot. Oh, how did he get a glove on that? What a stop by Gibson. Well, I love what he’s trying to do here, James. He wants to separate the body from puck, and that’s exactly what you got to do. You got to play with a competitive edge and an intensity. [Applause] We’re still in the early stages of this period. The Red Wings are up 3-1. Off the TR, he ties up his opponent. Knocks it into the offensive zone. The Sabers get a hold of the puck along the boards. Moves it quickly over to Greenway. Lucin’s been fantastic in this game. It’s the timely big save and he’s a real difference maker, not just between the pipes, but also the message it sends to the entire team. Just a calm, right? Anytime you’re defending, you find a way to make that save and now all of a sudden you’re moving the puck north. I think you play differently when you have guy in the net who’s making those kind of saves. Buffalo’s had no shortage of offensive scoring chances, but they still trail here in this third period. Lkins won the draw center. Quick pass to Slider. Slides right across the blue line and that’s blocked in traffic. Scores. Make it three in a row. And they’re now. Well, they certainly are. Three in a row. They’ve got their opponents on their heels. It is a wave. You can feel it. The energy every single shift. They’re getting it in. I love when offense is generated from below the goal line. All of the coverage is facing the puck and he gets lost in coverage in that slot area and just fires it home. Detroit’s performance tonight still showing no signs of letup here in this third period. Well, they’ve had such a impressive performance, James. It’s been dominant in all areas of the ice. And there’s been no lag or no letup. The message has been clear by the coaching staff as well as everyone on the bench. Keep pushing. Here’s a short pass to sight on the play. Oh my goodness. Wow. Absolutely incredible that he could extend himself like that, James, to be able to get onto that puck. Incredible save. Buffalo’s on the attack. Lumps the puck into the corner of the offensive zone. Buffalo’s on the attack. Slides it diagonally to Samuelson. And a great save. Gibson’s got the puck and he’s going to hang on. Lots of hockey left to be played in this period. The Red Wings just recently adding to their lead. They’re now up by three. Oh, and he takes possession of the puck from off the wing with the centers all locked up there off the draw. Here’s a beat in front. Oh, and he comes up with a stop. Styled in right now. Just have a look at that last save. I mean, he had to be moving extremely well in his crease to be able to get to position to make that save. Buffalo’s had a lot of good looks on goal, but they still trail early in the third. The Red Wings take possession here inside the offensive zone. driving right to the front and a good save on the play as action continues. Both teams are set. They’re ready to drop the puck. Great save by the goalender to get a pat on that one. Keeping the puck out of the net. Huge steal at his own end. And he can’t hang on after that hit. Quick pass across to Greenway and he handles the cross ice pass streaking into the attacking zone from the right and that’s picked off all alone. He scores a stone cold finish on the breakaway and that’s the bottom line cuz it’s in the back of the net. James man is he ever flying James. It looks like everyone else is in quick sand and he is moving. He gets on his horse. He’s in all alone. One-on-one with the goalender. He doesn’t freak out. He doesn’t panic. Shows a ton of confidence and lets that shot rip. Detroit’s offense continues to shine here in this third period. Well, this has got to be a dream for a coach. You know that they’re telling their team in the intermission to make sure they stay to business, stay to task, stay focused. That’s exactly what they’ve done. And they just hammered their opponent. Scooped up by grabbed along the boards by Tuck. Works it across to that goes off. Huge above the exactly what they’ve done. Now they got to find a way to do something with it. I mean, they’ve been manhandled this game. I really like this shot, James. It’s about accuracy when you recognize there’s a screen net from the goalender. He’s down in the butterfly trying to make himself as big as possible. Not big enough for that shot. The Sabres are showing a little pride here in the third. Really, that’s all that it’s about right now. This game is over. And you can see they just want this game and the clock to tick down. They want that final buzzer to go. The Red Wings take possession after that neutral zone faceoff. Here’s a chance into the corner now. Balance that loose puffer on the boards. Takes that pass back to the corner. And he has the answer on that one. the game of hockey, you know that your opponent is told to attack and drive the net and really get in the eyes of the tender and get a goal here has put them right back into this one. Yeah, one more that’ll be one away from time this game up, James. So, it’s about building and continually finding ways to press and be aggressive on the puck. So much of the goalending position is tracking the puck and trying to get the sight lines, James. And with only one player in front, you might lose it for a second, but if you out battle and out will the person in front, you’re going to find it. Unfortunately, this puck, it beats him clean. The Sabers have to find a way to get a couple more here if they want to try to salvage this one. Taking calculated risks, James, in jumping into the attack and pressing upwards. Now, you may give up some opportunities the other way, but you got to go for it. And we’re going to get a face off after the off side. Buffalo’s run into a hot goalender tonight. They’ve had no shortage of scoring opportunities, but yet they can’t convert and they trail here in the third. Taken by Dolly, moving into the attacking zone. Makes his presence known on the ice. There’s another hit. And you get a sense that this was a game plan to go after him tonight. here. Well, he certainly has a bullseye or target on his back, James. Picked up along the boards by Lin. Oh, they telegraph the pass and he picks it off. But you play the game differently depending on the situation. And when you’re up, you got to know it. And you got to game manage and you got to puck manage that turnover. Coach is going to like that one at all. And he’s pulled over to the ice and loses the puck. Now a quick pass to Krebs. The Savers are across the line and into the offensive end. and he gets in front of that. Detroit’s got the puck in the defensive end through center along the wing. This is a frustrating situation. and James just taking a whackload of penalties and really unable to get any momentum in this game because they’re short-handed the whole time as we’re about to drop the pump. Power play unit back out onto the ice for another opportunity. Well, the power play unit steps out on the ice. They’ve got to reset mentally here, James, and just get rid of all the other opportunities that they’ve had and forget about them because the time is the present right now and they got to make good on this one. Off the stick and the kick. Stop by the goender. What a save from point blank range. I mean, he’s in fabulous position. Square to the shooter in the slot and he makes the glove hand save. Power play set to roll on as the Centers get ready for the faceoff. [Applause] The Sabres will go to work here in the offensive zone. Takes the feed. Coner’s already got three points in this game. Kane trying to get a little too fancy with the puck there and as a result he loses it. Buffalo’s got it across the line. The Red Wings take over on possession. Great job. Buffalo’s got the puck here in the open ice and serves up a little knock on the play. Gibson’s got it and he’s going to hang on as we get a whistle. We got a penalty coming up here on the play. Puts it on. Whistle blows. stopping the play. Larkin’s been flagged for crosschecking. You can play hard, you can play physical, and you can be an agitator, but you can’t dance to the penalty box. You’re putting your team in a vulnerable spot here, James. They got to figure it out. He won’t be there. The Sabres once again send out their power play unit. Specialy teams in particular, power plays, they can create so much momentum, but when you don’t execute, they can really go the other way in favor of your opponent. It’s really disrupted the flow of the game. They got to get back on track attempting to clear the puff from deep inside his own end. Passes on over to Jolene. Pulls the puck into the attacking area. Moves by the check. Oh, what a save by Gibson. Tucks back on the ice after serving that fiveminute major for fighting and it’s certainly appreciated to have a physical element to your game. You know, his teammates certainly appreciate it, but man, you got to find a way to generate offense and the only way you can is when you’re on the ice. Great read by tries to get the puck over to Sher. Here’s a clearing attempt from their own end. And the puck clears the zone. That’s why you want players with active sticks on your PK, James. They can close quickly and they can corral the puck and just fire it down the ice. gets it out of his own hand. There’s the whistle. Offside is the call. Can they capitalize on this power play? Here comes the face off. Buffalo’s got possession of the puck after that neutral zone face off. Can’t keep a hold of it after that hit. On her heels trying to clear and it stays in. Detroit’s going to be able to kill a few seconds off now with the pop. Quick cross ice pass to Power. Here’s a shot. Misses the net. Oh, I think he wants that one back. Oh, you know he does. Timing is so important in embracing the pressure of that particular moment, James. And this power play went out there. Looks like their sticks were held tight and they couldn’t find a way to execute. That’s a tough one. Detroit’s got a hold of it along the wall down the left wing across into the offensive end. Picks up the puck in his own end.
