Maiocco: It almost feels as if Kyle Shanahan already has a lifetime contract. Shanahan almost assuredly will become the longest-tenured coach in franchise history. And while nothing lasts forever, it is difficult to envision this union having an expiration date.

  1. Jed learned from his mistakes. Kyle would have multiple interested teams the second he were ever dismissed.

  2. Great. Keeping Kyle and Lynch is the best decision Jed could ever make. Kyle isn’t just an excellent coach, he also knows how to build a great coaching staff (except for the special teams, lol). Today, I have no doubt this is the best-coached team on both sides of the ball, no one else would be 5–2 with so many injuries and in the toughest division in the NFL.

  3. Yeah Kyle is never getting fired, as long as he continues to be one of the best head coaches in the league, he can stay here as long as he wants, I do wonder tho if we end up eventually winning a Super Bowl, would Kyle end up taking a break? Then he’d have accomplished basically everything here, would be a similar situation to Bill Cowher, he ended up retiring after the Steelers finally won a Super Bowl with him in 2005.

  4. Kind of an odd take considering that 2-3 seasons of underachievement is all it takes to end the tenures of coaches like Bill Belichek and Pete Carroll.

KS has never won the Super Bowl so I think the leeway he gets would be considerably shorter if we start sucking for more than one season.

  5. He will win a Super Bowl eventually, whether it’s with the 49ers or somewhere else. Better to keep him.

  6. I mean look where the organization went from before Kyle to just a couple years after he joined. It was a huge mistake to fire Harbaugh but luckily we got Shanny not too many years later. You don’t let a coach who consistently gets you into deep playoff runs and was only a couple unfortunate turnovers/plays away from a title go.

  7. Why get rid of him? He is very successful and doing a hell of a job this year.

I disagree about him being a lifetime coach. If he produces back -to-back 6 win or fewer seasons, if he doesn’t deliver in the third season, he will be out the door. 2 seasons of bad records in a row may be enough.

  8. As a fan old enough to remember Bill saying goodbye to make way for George, George leaving to make way for Mooch, Mooch door the dark years, and then the Harbaugh-hopeful years, this headline brings tears of joy to my eyes.

Fuck you, you’re the one crying.

  9. I don’t know about lifetime contract. I could see Kyle being the next Andy Reid, having great seasons but never reaching the top of the mountain, needing change, so he gets axed, and wins a Super Bowl with his next team. But I think longest tenured is in the cards

  10. Don’t even wanna think about him leaving. I’ve seen people (not here) saying they should transition to Saleh and it’s mind boggling to me. Even Saleh, who I really respect, still…just no lol. We’re so lucky to have a coach like Kyle.

Any other team not named KC or Philly would love to have been to four championship games the past seven years. And honestly as much as his playcalling in big games can be frustrating o truly believe we would’ve had two chips if Purdy and Dre don’t get hurt but that’s part of the game I know 😢

  11. I could see Kyle deciding he wants a break at some point soon. Maybe for a change of scenery or just to have a rest for a few years. He’s aged a lot in the last 10 years

  12. Good. I dont want Kyle to ever leave. I think the people always calling for him to be fired are loons. What else does he have to do? They get mad because he lost 2 superbowls but do they not realize how fucking hard it is to get there? We’ve seen how limited Jimmy G is now. Look what he did with those teams with him at qb. Under Kyle’s tenure hes developed lots of all pro and pro bowl caliber players. We always restock the cupboard. We just need Saleh to also sign a lifetime contract. Somebody get an ankle monitor on him and make a blood sacrifice just for insurance. We cant lose Saleh! We just need MM back when the dolphins fire him and we are all set!

  13. I thought McDaniel and Daboll would be the next Shanahan and Kyle’s star would fade over time. Boy was I wrong

  14. I had to look it up. Walsh is the longest tenured coach with 10 seasons. This is Kyle’s 9th season. So, Kyle becoming the franchise’s longest textured head coach seems pretty likely at this point.

  15. Honestly, he’s not perfect… but who else would you realistically take? I mean finding a good coach is hard.

  16. Remember how funny it was when the raiders gave gruden a ten year contract? It was immediately obvious he’d be lucky to make it halfway through

Anyways, give Kyle (and Steve Kerr) ten year extensions

  17. If we have another major injury the 49ers need to perform a blood sacrifice. I don’t care who but I need someone to be shit canned so that I can tell myself there is light at the end of the tunnel.

This injury voodoo shit is what is going to do Kyle in. We know he abuses RBs until their bodies are destroyed. Sadly, I can live with that. But all these other injuries is downright spooky.

  18. I know it’s a polarizing headline but are we surprised? For the people that actually want Kyle gone go ahead and ask yourself who you would replace him with? There are 30 franchises that would fire their head coach to hire him immediately

  19. Mike Tomlin is in year 19 and counting. Shanahan’s just under halfway there. Plenty of time left.

  20. He had a legitimate claim to being Coach of the Year every year he’s been in the playoffs, and should be a contender this year too.

2019 it was complete bullshit that he didn’t get it for going from #2 draft pick to the #1 seed when Stefanski and Daboll got it for falling on their face after getting a wild card spot. 2021 went from 3-5 and left for dead to beating the #1 seed. 2022 was #2 seed after losing multiple quarterbacks and being 3-4 to start the season. 2023 coached Purdy to nearly an MVP title and had one of the greatest offenses of all time. This year, the Colts probably get it, but if they fall off and Kyle gets to the playoffs with a rookie defense and 6 Mac Jones victories, it should be his.

Edit: seriously, compare 2023 Kyle to 2019 Harbaugh. The one fucking year they give it to a coach who was ALREADY COACHING A PLAYOFF TEAM who improved by like two wins because he took a first round QB that was controversial for being a “dual threat” QB and helped him get an MVP season. That’s about on the level of what Shanahan did with Mr Irrelevant, at least until that Ravens game ruined the MVP race. Jason Garrett went from 4-12 to 13-3 in 2016 and he got Coach of the Year, same thing Shanahan did. I’ll never stop being pissed about it until they finally give him one.

  21. When the roster is good we’re contenders. Until that changes I don’t foresee it either.

That said if we were to have 2-3 sub .500 seasons in a row then he’d probably be gone

If you’re not having success then the attitude changes real quick

  22. What is the record for the longest tenured coach? We are certainly lucky. Give this man time. LOTS of time. He has shown he can win with anyone. Jimmy G, last pick in the draft, 2nd/3rd stringers. Until he puts a string of 3-4 years of awful seasons, GIVE THE MAN SUPER LTD
