“Full-Team Effort” | Buffalo Sabres Coach Lindy Ruff After Win Over Detroit Red Wings

you’ll see your young goender go in and perform like that. I don’t know if you can take me back to your first NHL game, but what is how does it feel? My first time as good as that. Um I you know, I guess you don’t really know and you know until you play him and uh he’s done a lot of good things in practice, made a lot of good saves and he’s worked extremely hard. I just thought he looked comfortable. um got a little concerned cuz no shots for the longest period of time. Uh you know, one of the first big chances he faces is a breakaway and makes makes a heck of a save. And I think that that alone probably made him feel good. Uh but he he he looked solid all night. I thought uh handling the puck, he helped our defenseman out a lot. Uh breaking the puck out. Um and then he he made one unbelievable save there on that backside. They know a lot about Lion from the last two years. Throw them a change up or what was the thought about tonight for him? Just too many games for Lion. Uh you know, really we just felt we reached a point um no more than that. Um nothing to do with him and Detroit or anything. just uh really we got to a point where we just felt we got a busy week and we we have to get him in. Two breakaways. He makes that stop on to Brinket and then you know Jack scores the you know the fourth goal. I mean later on just I mean those are those those are kind of momentum swinging saves I guess. Yeah. And and I think that’s those are the type of saves you build off of. you know, you get a big save and then a lot of times you can go down the other way and score. Um, bench was fired up. Um, you know, I think the crowd was fired up uh when you see a save like that. Uh, so it it was a big momentum swing in the game, I thought, for us to find some open ice to help him get some off. You know, I think he’s been skating well. I uh there was a little bit I thought we as a team really skated well tonight. I it’s the first game since camp, the start of camp. I’ve liked the way we’ve come out in the first period. Um and we really skated. Um got the puck below the goal line. Didn’t turn pucks over. Um the puck support coming out of our zone was really good. I think when when Jack has ice, you know he’s going to make a play. uh when when Jack gets to the middle of the ice, we know we’re going to see a real good play. Uh but he is skating better uh right now than probably all of last year. I know I don’t want to over emphasize it. It’s still October, but that team had won five in a row. You’re in a tie game in the third period and it’s basically win a period to win a game. What does it mean to you about the way this team played in that third period in all all areas? Well, you look at the previous some of the previous losses where we’re, you know, within within a goal of either winning it or tying it. Uh, and we didn’t get the goal. Uh, I mentioned after the game that just to stay with it, keep playing the game the right way. Uh, the chances came. I thought we did a great job of just maintaining how we were playing. We didn’t do anything crazy. Um, I mean, obviously we we gave up the one play at the end of the power play, just, you know, weren’t quite alert enough to the guy coming out of the box, but I’ve said this before, you got to be comfortable in that uncomfortable situation, and I thought tonight we were. He’s just being evaluated. So, I I really don’t have any time frame or what what it’s going to be right now. Confidence do you have in Tyson Kak right now? I mean, he was on the isolate. you got another goal. It just seems like you can kind of put him in any situation. I I have he he’s he’s one of our best defenders. Um he’s a he’s a real good young centerman that reads the play well and he’ll he’ll block shots and physically he gets into people. Uh I have confidence to play him against anybody. Fact that probably every goal he scores is within two feet of the net. Well, I I think if you go back to those the disallowed goal heal he had, it was the same type of way he’s driving the net. His next goal he scored was driving the net. Uh you know, the ricochet pinball goal in Winnipeg, I I look at, you know, it sticks out. He’s around the net. Um he’s being rewarded for going to the right place and going to the right place hard. Thanks,

  1. After watching Kozak for the past 2 years in Rochester, I am so glad that the coaching staff kept him up, he can replace Greenway nicely, with Ostlund not far behind.

  2. Ruff never liked Levi. Let's be critical. Let's not get all giddy and emotional. Ellis showed many weaknesses. His glove hand is good but not as good as Levi. Levi also looked awesome his first game and the next 6 games. Ellis still needs work.
