The way the season ended hurt. Losing to the Brewers in the NLDS in five games was a gut punch, especially since it was our first real playoff run in almost a decade. Seeing Wrigley Field electric in October served as a powerful reminder of what this team and this city are capable of, but from what I’ve gathered, President of Baseball operations Jed Hoyer is not satisfied. He’s hungrier than ever and knows he has to improve this roster for 2026. The 2025 season was a roller coaster. The offense carried us historically in the early months, but let’s be frank, the weak spot was and remains our pitching staff. We had some heroic performances, especially from Shoto Imanaga and a healthy Justin Steel, but the depth simply wasn’t there. The injury to rookie sensation Cade Horton, who looked like our emerging ace, brutally exposed our biggest flaw. We do not have a true dominant ace, a number one starter you hand the ball to in game one of the playoffs and just know you’re going to win. Hoya knows this. The free agent market this winter has some options. Maybe a max fried if he gets there. But sources are telling me Hoyer is looking for something bigger. He understands that to take the next step, to go from a playoff team to a World Series favorite, he needs an impact move. And that move, my friends, appears to be materializing on the trade market. What I’m hearing is that the Cubs are preparing to be extremely aggressive if the right piece becomes available. We aren’t talking about a mid-rotation guy. We are talking about a generational talent. The name I’ve been hearing repeatedly in my conversations with League sources is TK Scooel. Yes, that TK Scooel, the Detroit Tigers left-hander. The man who is almost certainly going to be named the American League Sai Young Award winner. We are talking without exaggeration about the best pitcher on the planet right now. His Arsenal is devastating. The fast ball explodes, the change up disappears and the slider is unhitable. And here is the crucial part, the John Haymon insight that defines the market. Scooble and the Tigers are in a very difficult situation. He has only one year of team control remaining before he becomes an unrestricted free agent after the 2026 season. And as you know, his agent is Scott Boras. That means 99.9% of the time he will test the market. Boras is looking to break the contract record for a pitcher. Detroit has been trying, according to my sources, for over a year to sign him to an extension, but Scubal is betting on himself. This puts the Tigers in an impossible position. and they can keep him for 2026, maybe make one last mediocre push for the playoffs, and then lose him for nothing but a compensatory draft pick. Or they can trade him now this winter at the absolute peak of his value and acquire a package of prospects and players that could set up their franchise for the next decade. The industry consensus is that Detroit will be forced to at the very least listen to offers. And if they are listening, Jed Hoyer needs to be the first one to call. This is the moment. The Cubs need is glaring. The player is a franchise altering talent and the market opportunity is aligning perfectly. I know what many of you sharp northsiders are thinking. Trade the farm for just one year of a pitcher. We saw what happened with the Kyle Tucker trade which cost us Cam Smith. It’s a valid concern, but this is different. First, we are talking about a SAI young pitcher in his absolute prime. Second, if the Cubs make this trade, you can bet Tom Rickettts will be immediately pressured to back up the Brinks truck and offer a massive extension. This is an all-in move, and my analysis shows me three main reasons why the Cubs not only should but must make this move. Reason number one, we have the ammunition. For years, we’ve heard about how Jed Hoyer was hoarding prospects. Well, this is why you build an elite farm system. You don’t hoard them to have a nice team in Iowa. You hoard them to cash them in for a tar scubble. If the Tigers trade school, they are going to demand a godfather offer. And Chicago is one of the few teams in the league with the combination of high-end prospect capital and young MLB talent to make it happen. Reason number two, the desperate need for an ace. Scubal isn’t just an upgrade. He redefineses the team. He makes us instant World Series favorites. Imagine a rotation that starts with TK Scubal followed by Shota Imanaga, a healthy Justin Steel, and the depth of Jordan Wixs and Ben Brown. That is arguably the best rotation in all of baseball. He is the stopper. He is the guy you give the ball to in game one against the Brewers and feel absolute confidence. Reason number three, we have to catch the Brewers. Let’s be blunt. We paid a historic contract to steal Craig Council from Milwaukee to win the division. In his first year, we finished behind them and got eliminated by them. The Brewers aren’t going anywhere. The division until further notice belongs to them. The Tucker trade was a good move, but it wasn’t enough. Hoya needs a move that unequivocally declares that the NL Central now runs through Chicago. TK Scubble is that move. Now, let’s analyze the real cost because it’s easy to talk about ammunition, but it’s hard to pull the trigger. A trade for Scooball would cost a fortune and fans might not be comfortable with the names involved. My analysis based on conversations and similar past blockbuster trades suggests Detroit’s opening ask will be astronomical. They are going to ask for Cade Horton. Yes, the rookie sensation. We just lost to injury. He would be the centerpiece. On top of him, the Tigers would certainly demand one of our top hitting prospects. Owen Casey, the power, or Moyes Balisteros, the advanced bat. They would also likely ask for another top arm like Jackson Wiggins. And finally, they would demand a young, controllable, established MLB player. We’re talking about someone like Pete Crow Armstrong, though I doubt Hoyer includes him, or perhaps a Hayden Wesneski, uh, or Ben Brown. A package centered around Horton, Casey, and Wesneski for one year of scubble. Will Jed Hoya have the guts? My guess he has to. The window of opportunity with Seya Suzuki, Niko Herna, Dansby Swanson, and Ian Hap is now. You cannot waste another year of this core. This offense is good enough. The bullpen is solid. The missing piece is the undisputed ace. This trade fixes our biggest weakness and turns it into our greatest strength overnight. Final analysis. This trade for TK Scubble redefes the Cubs contention window. It signals that we are moving out of building mode and into allout win mode. It’s a massive gamble, yes, but it’s the gamble Jed Hoyer needs to take if he wants to bring another banner to Wrigleyfield. But that’s just my analysis based on what I’m hearing.
