There’s a lot more to George Springer than his association with the 2017 Astros.

The one thing I want to discuss here is how we view George Springer as a former member of the 2017 Astros. I will admit in writing about him, it’s been a little problematic. The first time I mentioned him with regard to the 22 postseason home runs that he had then he got to 23 with the game seven homer. I mentioned that three of those homers in 2017 were at home. That’s when the Astros were found to have banged the garbage can. And actually because of that, I felt had to mention it. To me, when you mention the 23 postseason home runs, it’s kind of hard to ignore that he was a part of that team. And this goes to Springer’s legacy. He was a part of that team. Jose Altuve was part of that team. Jose Altuve is going to be a very strong Hall of Fame candidate. Springer has had an extraordinary career. How much do you factor that into how you perceive these guys in the entirety of their careers? I don’t know the answer to that. That’s one year. They made a horrible mistake, these guys. Okay, we don’t even know the extent to which they were helped by the trash can banging. We don’t know if Springer directly benefited or not. I’m not excusing it and I’m not diminishing it. But at the same time, it’s 8 years ago. George Springer is doing wonderful things right now. He is a leader on that team. He is one of the most respected veterans in the game. As a personal aside with him, he of course grew up a stutterer and he has overcome that. He has been an example for kids all over the country and an inspiration who have stuttered. So, there’s a lot more to this person.

  1. Altuve chose not to benefit from the cheating. Ken, who broke the story, knows this yet never clarifies. George definitely benefited. There should be a distinction made

  2. Other than Marwin Gonzalez, the main core of players from that 2017 team has had the SAME type seasons they had then well AFTER 2017. So did the trash cans really help? Geesh people get over it already. They did it for like one month only during home games. Where did they play Game 7 of the World Series in 2017? I’ll wait….

  3. Nonsense. Tired of this "scandal" as if the Astros were the only MLB teams using MLB installed monitors to guess pitching? A pastime as old as baseball itself. Just an excuse for monotonous sports pundits to complain. The Athletic has gone on to prove that gotcha reporting is more important than just reporting about baseball.

  4. As a life long LA Dodgers fan and remember staying up late at night watching that World Series. I was deeply disappointed by the entire incident and saddened the players were never disciplined. I just don’t know how they ignored the fact they were clearly cheating and turned a blind eye to it. I hope none of them make the hall of fame. Go Dodgers.

  5. Hows that different from Pete Rose gambling on games?

Whos to say they didnt do that all season using sonething to cheat?

I feel they shouldnt be allowed to the hall of fame at all. Cheating is cheating.

  6. Somehow altuve gets a pass for being onthe Astros and springer, bregman, Correa, beltran don't. Anyone on that team should absolutely get some of the stink on them.

  7. To be honest, I am over it by now. But their records of that year needs to be stripped and their championship has to be stripped, that's the minimum a league can do be fair to all the other teams. Also hand one year suspension without pay. I think that's enough. Springer has been good in the postseason this year and thats indeed impressive, I shall no longer poke holes into what he is doing now. This is the same way when usain defended gatlin when gatlin came back after his PEDs suspension, gatlin got his punishment and accepted he was wrong. For others to forgive what they did, they should accept that what they did was wrong, ask for forgiveness and get punished.
