Mickey Loomis FINALLY ADMITS Saints Are Rebuilding! | New Orleans GM Evaluates Kellen Moore, QBs
[Music] So Mickey Lumis was a guest on Saints Hour radio show on Tuesday night and it’s it’s not often that we get a chance to to hear from the Saints general manager and full disclosure you all know I’ve not been the biggest fan. Um he is however the general manager of the team and is going to have a tremendous amount of say so over what happens with roster decisions and the trade deadline and draft and all different types of stuff. So when he speaks it’s it’s going to be interesting. So, uh, Mickey Lumis spoke and you know, one of the, um, the interesting things is from an from an organizational approach. The thing that they have consistently said is they are in they’re in win now mode. Now, now that phrasing, I’m choosing that phrasing, but the same and it’s clear as I always say, actions speak louder than words. It’s clear through their actions in the last, you know, certainly the last half decade at the end of Payton Breeze through Dennis Allen that they were not in in a hurry to rebuild and I I’ve shared my opinion on that at the be at the end of Breeze. I totally understood you were all you were mortgaging the future to win now to try to get one more under Drew. It didn’t happen. You had a lot of really disappointing playoff exits. Um, and I also understood trying to take the approach they did with DA. Look, you had good culture. You still had a good core of players. Allen had been a head coach before. You learn, you hope learn from some of his mistakes. You were able to maintain Allen and Pete Carmichael. You you bring it. You brought in Jamus to learn behind Drew. There it was reason to believe that could work. Um, and it didn’t. So, I was okay with that approach then. What I was not okay with is subsequently the la the subsequent two years of continuing to double down behind Derek Carr when you were clearly an aging, eroding roster. Your cap was a mess. You were nowhere near competing, but they were spending and and behaving like they were. And I think that only set them further back, which makes Kell Moore’s job now even more difficult. But it was interesting because on this show uh Mickey Lumis acknowledged for the first time that I’ve heard him acknowledge in any way that yeah they’re in a reveal. Well, first of all, it’s hard to get by the record, right? Particular if you’re a fan, you have a lot of passion about your club, then being one and six isn’t very much fun. It’s not very much fun for us either. And I would say, hey, we, you know, we didn’t expect to be one and six. But we also recognize that in a lot of ways this was going to be a development year playing a lot of young players. We got a new coaching staff trying to develop, identify, and develop a quarterback. So, there’s been a lot of good things, but again, it’s hard to look past the results. Like I said, especially if you’re a fan of the the New Orleans Saints. Did we just hear Mickey say it’s hard to look past Did he Did I hear that right? It’s hard to look past the results. That’s what he said. Yeah. Do you have the look past the results? One of the things that good organizations do, man, you look beyond the results. Boy, I tell you, when your own words bite you in the ass, it is really got to sting a little bit. Um, good organ. I’m I don’t want to get derailed here. I don’t want to get derailed, but I got to get derailed here for just a second. Just a second. So, remember remember when angry, bald, redfaced, screaming Italian guys on the radio were calling you out for how bad you were at your job, you said this. One of the things that good organizations do, man, you look beyond the results. Ah, you look beyond the good organizations look beyond the results. And then on Tuesday night, oh, Mickey said this. Said this again. It’s hard to look past the results. Like, but that’s what good organizations do, right, Mick? Your words, not mine. Your words, not mine. Okay. I’m Get it back on track. Get it back on track. All right. We’re not going to look past the results. You’re one and six. But he said there’s two things. You had a young coaching staff and you’re trying to develop a quarterback. Okay. Um also, so that’s from Lumis. The day Kell Moore was hired and introduced as the Saints head coach, he was asked if he felt this team was close to competing. That was one of the attractive pieces of this is, you know, I think this is a talented roster. We played here week three. Uh we took it down to a minute left to to finally score a touchdown when I was in Philadelphia. It was a really challenging uh challenging game. And so uh throughout this season, you’ve seen it. Obviously, injuries uh injuries were a challenge this year. And those things sometimes are uh challenging, uncontrollable circumstances. And so uh we recognize there’s so much good going on here. We want to embrace the good. Don’t lose any of the good while building this thing the right way. Okay. maybe a little more optimistic than he needed to be, but you can understand also introductory press conference optimism abounds and all that stuff. But again, the two things really that Mickey focused on in that comment were young coaching staff and developing a quarterback. Let’s start with the followup on the young coaching staff. I definitely think the right coaches in the building. Absolutely. I love the staff. I love the things that they do behind the scenes. I love the the deep thinking, the intelligence of the group. You know, I love the way that they’re approaching each week. Look, we’re we’re trying to get better inc incrementally and not take steps back. Um, I got asked earlier today what I think about the job Kellen Moore has done so far. And I don’t have a good answer for it. I I am not going to sit here and cr and crush Kellen Moore for being one and six because this is not a talented Saints roster. Um, for what it’s worth, there’s different power ranking metrics. I mean, you could choose whichever one you want. Uh, I’m looking at this one right here from uh team rankings. It’s a uh it’s teamrankings.com and they use their power ranking system and they have the Saints 31st in the NFL ahead of only the Titans. That’s just one. You pick whichever one you want. But the reality is when you look at the roster 1 to 53, the Saints are bottom three, bottom five if we’re being generous in the NFL. I mean generally it’s Jets, Dolphins, Titans, Saints, Raiders, Browns, kind of all in that mix, right? So you’re you’re at the bottom of the league in talent, which is why if you were realistic, you you didn’t think this team was going to win a lot of games this year. So I’m not mad about the one and six. And it’s hard for me to look at Kell Moore as failing because they’re one and six. Like you have to have a roster that can compete. He doesn’t. Hopefully they get there. The things that I don’t like are like the double- digit penalties in multiple games this year, not using your timeouts at the end of the half against Arizona week one. Like some of those things where I look and go, “Okay, man, like you’re the head coach. These are the things you need to be in control of.” And sometimes you wonder if they’re not. But again, small sample size. I like what Mickey said there. The deep level of thinking, the all the the football knowledge. You’ve got experience with Brandon Staley having been a head coach. You just got to get the right players and that’s going to be more on Mickey and the front office to make sure they build a roster that they can compete with. Now, I don’t have confidence in Mickey Lumis’ ability to do that, but that’s my own personal opinion. The other part he talked about was developing a quarterback and uh can we five, please? This was Mickey talking about Spencer Rattler through seven games this year. Particularly with quarterbacks, every experience is a learning experience. And I think they just have to go through it. And there’s growing pains and and you’re you’re hoping that you can be good enough in the run game, you can be good enough defensively and in the special teams to to win a lot of games while you’re developing the quarterback and and you’re, you know, you’re waiting on his his development. And so that hasn’t really happened. That’s, you know, the reason for the record. I think Spencer’s made a lot of progress. He’s done a lot of really good things. And the hardest thing to do in in sports is be patient, you know, while your guys are developing. But that’s what we have to do. We don’t have a choice. So be patient while the guys are developing. And guys, that’s plural where you’re talking about Rattler and and Chuck. So as a follow-up to Rattler, here’s Lumis on Tyler Shuck’s development. You know, the things that, you know, the fans can’t see is the daily practices, the things that have that happen um you know, each week during practice and and obviously during training camp as well. There there’s a lot of things about Tyler that we really love. We’ve got I think we’ve got two great prospects uh in our building and uh you know, we’ll see eventually how that shakes out, but but um it’s just about development right now and and you know, I think that’s going well. It uh it’s he’s right in the sense that fans can’t see it because Shuck’s not playing. We’re not at practice. So, it is hard to see th those development pieces. Um, you know, my feeling on it has been eventually you’re going to have to play Tyler Shuck. Uh, and I I’ll reiterate this so there’s no confusion. I’m not saying the Saints are one and six because of Spencer Rattler. I’m not saying that. I’ I’ve said very consistently that I think Spencer Rattler has played efficient football. He hasn’t necessarily elevated the team. Obviously, he also hadn’t gotten a lot of help from his playmakers, but he’s also not the guy that’s getting you beat. Now, the four turnovers this weekend was terrible, and if he consistently does that, he’s going to lose his job. But organizationally, you invested the 40th overall pick in Tyler Shuck. You’re going to have a top five pick in this coming draft, and you have to know if you’re going to use that pick on a quarterback or if you’re going to use that pick on another player that’s going to help you win at another position. Well, the only way to know that is to look at Tyler Shuck in game action. So unless if this team goes on a heater, you’re going to have to play Shuck eventually to see what what you have. Again, I’m not anticipating like I don’t to be very clear, I don’t think you’re playing Tyler Shuck and all of a sudden you’re going to win six of seven. It doesn’t matter if it’s Rattler or Shuck. Neither of these guys are helping this team win games. They’re not good. Now you have some winnable games on the back end. You got the Dolphins and you got the Jets and you got a couple of games against the Panthers. So, there’s some opportunities there that are more manageable than than other going to Seattle or going to Buffalo, which let’s be realistic. Um, but it just feels like at some point you’re going to have to to throw Shuck into the deep end to see how he fares to know if you’re confident enough moving going into next year with these two guys or if you’re going to have to look elsewhere. Um, and the one other thing that’s certainly notable is here in a couple of weeks is the NFL trade deadline. So, a year ago, the Saints were sellers. They traded Marshon Latimore. I I doubt seriously they’re going to be buyers because you’re not looking to add anybody to make you better this year. You’re already out of contention for everything. So, what is the approach to the trade deadline? I, you know, I don’t know that we go in with any uh particular philosophy about the trade deadline. You know, here’s what happens is that, you know, the teams that aren’t doing well, everybody presumes they’re sellers. And the teams that are doing well, everyone presumes that they’re buyers. So, you know, we we obviously’ve been the subject of a lot of rumors. Um, and I’m I’m assuming and we have gotten a few calls about different guys. And look, we’ll look at each, you know, we’ll look at each thing individually. We’ll discuss it, but I don’t think we’re in the business of trading away good players unless the deals are just too good to refuse. That’s a decision I’ll have to make. Do they have young cornerstone players they want to build around or are there players that they’re not confident they’ll be able to resign so you get an asset in place of a player you wouldn’t resign anyway? Um it’ll be an interesting exercise because you have a and you have Shahed and you have Alante Taylor and you have Pete Wernern and you have Carl Granderson. got players that are young players that have some trade value, but are they more valuable on your roster than whatever asset you would get for them? That’s the type of decision Mickey Lumis and the staff will have to make as you approach the trade deadline here in a couple of weeks. Hey, thanks so much for watching. Please leave your comments. Matt Moscona reacts to Mickey Loomis’ surprising comments on the Saints Radio Network — where the longtime GM finally admitted that this might be a development year in New Orleans. After years of insisting the Saints were in “win now” mode, Loomis now points to a young coaching staff, a developing quarterback room with Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough, and a roster short on talent. Matt dives into what Loomis’ remarks really mean for the future of the Saints, whether Kellen Moore can survive this rebuild, and what fans should expect heading into the NFL trade deadline.

He didn't expect to be 1-6!? He's crazy! What did he expect? Does he know his roster? I was expecting 3 or 4 wins. What did he expect?
He needs to go!
Gum Smacking Mick at it again.
He would've won nothing without SP.
It's because dropping the ball and not putting more points on the board and coaches not making better choices for the offense and defense
This team is at least 5+ years away from competing for the division again, and that’s if they manage to start drafting better. They have the worst roster in the league and need better players at nearly every position.
I’m not holding my breath considering the team’s poor drafting and Loomis’s habit of giving big contracts to bad players. Loomis needs to go.. Gayle Benson is clueless.
Mickey Loomis needs to go. Hire Drew Brees.
THIS IS NOT KELLENS ROSTER ITS DA & MICKEYS KELLEN SHOULDNT BE GETTING BLAMED FOR LACK OF TALENT
I see all
The Saints and the Bears had so many penalties it was atrocious! I really wanted Rattler to beat Caleb Williams-then we got Dennis Allenned! Looking like tha 86 Bears defense! 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
Sell the tight end, the kicker, I won’t name names….and Werner. Keep the rest of the defense
Will he do the honorable thing and resign? Hé's responsible for horrible drafting and salary cap issues every year.
Mickey Doomis 🥸
I'm shocked the Raiders offense still sucks, with the additions Geno Smith and a first round RB.
Mickey Loomis should move to another front office position, because he's not doing soo good since Sean left.
I think this “rebuild” will last the resto of the decade. I hope I’m wrong. I really do.
It’s a rebuild.
This team will go nowhere until Mickey Loomis is gone
Rebuild? Retool? Tween? Upgrade? Whatever, we need help and need to get younger.
Loomis is in pure denial if he is at all surprised by the 1-6 start.
But I guess when you are entitled and can’t be fired that must be what happens.
Who in their right minds thought we weren’t in a rebuild ? Saints roster is BAD….we need some good drafts. I don’t think the team has given up on Kellen. We are talent poor….I think Kellen will grow into a good coach though. I like Kellen and hope he succeeds.
Who dat congressional tries to say Micky don't do anything he lets the coach do eveything so we shouldn't be blaming him lol
Mickey = Better to be LUCKY 🍀 than good. Payton + Brees = Luck of a Lifetime
Wait! Mickey assumes we’ve got some calls about trading some of our guys?
He should ask his GM. You know if he had a competent one….
I just don’t think they are taking a qb in the draft.
So now we know Payton covered his ass a long time
Why is he trading our future picks then?
So funny how scared these media clowns are to say anything negative about Rattler. They’re absolutely scared of getting cancelled.
I thought Darren Rizzi should have been given the head coaching job
Can we bring back the finish strong propaganda? I know it’s a different roster from the Super Bowl but we need that winning mentality back that each individual matters and can help affect us winning
A stricter coach MIGHT command more respect if the guys don’t have the natural discipline themselves
No shit Loomis and he using the rebuild as a excuse for his bad drafting and bad contracts
Now he done back tracked
Trying hard to justify playing Tyler right now and struggling to make it make sense after the GM just told you we don’t see what’s going on in practice is funny to me 😂😂😂😂 ….
Special Ed Loomis has to go
