Turn on notifications because the 2025 2026 off season is heating up and you won’t want to miss a thing. Now, let’s get to it. We just came off an exciting season, one that finally got us back into the October conversation. We got a taste of the playoffs for the first time in what feels like a while. And the feeling I’m picking up from sources inside Wrigley Field and specifically from Jed Hoyer’s office is not satisfaction, it’s impatience. Jed spoke publicly about the desire to get right back, but what I’m hearing privately is stronger. He views the 2026 window as not just open, but as one we must crash through. The 2025 run was the appetizer. He now wants to build a team that can win the NLCS. And that brings us to the first major strategic domino of this offseason, the Kyle Tucker situation. Look, we all loved what Tucker brought to the team, but realistically and based on the conversation circulating, it’s a near certainty, he is not coming back. The asking price is going to be astronomical and the internal focus has shifted. The front office believes that with the youth movement we’re seeing Pete Crow Armstrong establishing himself, Matt Shaw potentially on the way up, Owen Casey knocking on the door, the impact of losing Tucker’s bat, can be absorbed internally. But the money that won’t be spent on Tucker, oh that money now has a very, very specific purpose. And it’s not for a replacement bat. What the 2025 playoff run taught us. And what Jed Hoyer knows full well is that our rotation, while solid, lacked one crucial element, pure unadulterated swing and miss dominance. We lacked that guy who with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning of an elimination game could reliably get three straight punch outs. We had a lot of pitch to contact guys, but in October you need someone who misses bats. That is why the front office is shifting its financial focus to the free agent starting pitching market. And there is one name I am hearing repeatedly from my sources as being the perfect target for Jed Hoyer. That name is Dylan CE. Yes, the former Padres’s and originally white socks of course ace is now on the open market. Let’s break down why this is the move that makes the most sense for the 2026 Cubs. Remember the 2025 trade deadline. The prices for starting pitchers were in the words I heard absolutely ridiculous. Uh Jed Hoyer refused to meet the prospect price. He wasn’t going to give up a Cade Horton or other top names for a two-month rental. The Padres’s on the other hand held on to Cease even in his contract year and now they lose him for nothing but a compensatory pick. Hoyer’s patience paid off. Now he can acquire Cease by spending only money, not the future of our organization. But why CE specifically? He fits the exact need we identified. Swing and miss stuff. Let’s go to the data because the surface numbers do not tell the story. In 2025, CE may have posted a 4.55 ERA and a 1.327 whip, which looks mediocre. But if you dig deeper, you see what the Cubs front office is seeing. Dylan CE in 2025 led all qualified pitchers in Major League Baseball with 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings. K9, think about that. Nobody who threw enough innings had a higher strikeout rate. That is the kind of elite stuff we lacked consistently at the top of our rotation. He generates whiffs. He is the antidote to high pressure playoff lineups. The Cubs front office isn’t looking at the 455 RA. They are looking at the FIP fielding independent pitching which was certainly much lower and that elite K9 rate suggesting he was the victim of bad luck or poor defense in San Diego. And this is where Jed Hoya’s strategy comes into play. This is the classic Hoya special. Uh ceases down 2025 season, at least on the surface, is the best thing that could have happened for the Cubs. It suppresses his market value. If he had repeated his 2024 season, 4.2 BW, we’d be talking about a $200 million plus contract. But now because of that inflated 4.55 ERA, there is hesitation in the market. This creates the perfect buy low opportunity on an elite asset. I’m hearing the Cubs could explore two paths here. The first is a long-term deal that comes in say 30 $40 million cheaper than it would have been a year ago. Hya loves that kind of value. But the second scenario is even more intriguing and perhaps more likely. Echoing the strategy we’ve seen in the past. A high incentive one-year prove it deal. CE who is only 29 gets to bet on himself. He comes to Wrigleyfield for one year uh perhaps for$2530 million. rebuilds his value with that elite stuff and hits the market again at 30 for a mega deal for the Cubs. This is a massive win. We get an ace for our 2026 rotation with minimal long-term financial risk. It is exactly the kind of calculated analytics driven looking past the ERRA and financially flexible move that defines Hoya’s front office. They aren’t buying the 2025 performance. They are buying the 115k9 rate and betting the erra will correct itself. And there is one other factor that makes cease the ideal target for this specific team. Something that was a problem for us in 2025. Durability. The greatest ability sometimes is availability. And Dylan CE is a workhorse. The man simply does not miss starts. For the fifth consecutive season, CE made 32 or more starts. Think about the stability that brings. We saw a rotation get nicked up by injuries in 2025. Having a guy you can pencil in for 32 33 starts and 17180 plus innings. His career high is 189.1 is an unbelievable stabilizer for the entire staff. He isn’t just an innings eater. He’s an elite innings eater. Signing cease isn’t just adding a pitcher. It’s a multiplier effect. It defines the rest of the rotation. Imagine this 2026 rotation. One, Dylan CE, the swing and miss ace. Two, Sho Imanaga, the control wizard. Three, Justin Steel, the all-star bulldog. Four, Cade Horton, the rookie phenom. Five, the winner of the Jordan Wixs wore Javier Assad Ben Brown battle. That my fellow northsiders is a championship caliber rotation. That is how you win the central division and that is how you compete with the Dodgers and Braves in October. The addition of cease instantly changes the 2026 outlook turning a good rotation into a potentially dominant one. My final analysis is this. Jed Hoyer was patient at the deadline, absorbed the need for an ace during the playoff run, and is now positioned to strike on the perfect target. CE offers the ideal blend of elite stuff, pay proven durability, 32 plus starts, and most importantly, uh, buy low value opportunity due to a superficially inflated 2025 ERA. This is the move that takes us to the next level. But now I want to hear from you Cubs fans. What do you think of this strategy? Is Dylan cease the ace we need to anchor this rotation and make a serious World Series run or are you worried about that 455 ERA from last year? And do you think that Tucker money should be spent elsewhere? Drop your comments below.
