Go. Enough talk, enough hype. Let’s do this. Your first period is set to go. The Red Wings will start with the puck as they win the opening face off here. The Oilers get a hold of the puck along the boards. Big hit that frees up possession. This is a great heads up read at center ice and there’s the save. I tell you, some fast muscle fiber in there because I’m telling you, he makes that save. I thought that was going in, but he just reacts and keeps it out of the net. The Oilers played along the boards. Oh, he knocked him. Made the save on the play. Some players get into the game by physically engaging early. There’s a fine line there, but that was executed perfectly. Big time stop there. And the puck’s knocked loose. takes the pass and it’s stolen by Larka. Makes the save and putting out the fire in front. As we look at that hit, you can certainly see the adrenaline running through his body on that one. I mean, he elicited all of his power into that hit there, James. But I really like the timing of it. You want to make sure that you’re dictating tempo and pace right from the onset of a game. That’s how you do it. We’re still in the early stages of this period. We’ve still got zeros on the board. Edmonton’s taken possession in their own end. Takes it and looks ahead. Oh, look at this. Here they come. They’ve got numbers. What a block as he lays out in front of it. The Oilers take possession in the neutral zone. Quick pass to Edmonson. Here’s a shot. Makes a save. Great positioning by the goalender to redirect it to the corner getting it out of danger. Great punch on the reach. The Oilers gain possession. Steve here on the attack. Might turns it aside with the glove. Goender covers it up. We get a whistle to slow things down. Detroit’s got possession here in their own end. Great read by Fredo scores and they are on the board quickly in this one. Well, it’s because they were ready, James. I I mean, the first five strides right from puck drop were urgent and when you’re aggressive and you are urgent on the puck, you find a way to put it in. Honestly, James, if that was me in that situation, I would have intercepted the puck and looked to pop it to someone else right away. But he he wants to get activated into the play. He’s made a great defensive play, which turns to offense, and now he wants in on the action that he created. Well, he does, and he finishes it off. Edmonton’s aggressive start has resulted in the game’s first goal. Look at this one, Cheryl. Yeah, and it’s impressive the entire start by this team. and they knew that they had to come into this barn and be ready to play because when you’re the away team, not only are you the underdog, but you need to take advantage when you get it. And execution, that’s the name of the game. That’s why they get the first four. The Ori have it from their own end. Taken by Walden. Moves it over to Frederick. Moves the puck to Rasmusen. And they’ll go on the attack. Bring pressure and scores. Incredible. Two goal 30 seconds apart. Quick response back to back here and the team is humming. Yeah. And talk about putting your opponent on their heels. Wow. Coach is going to love this play because you’re in good defensive posture and then you read the play. Good. Have a good active stick to be able to intercept and get a tally. That’s a remarkable play. Lots of time left in this period. Edmonton’s been the better team here over the last few minutes, increasing their lead to two and tries to make a diagonal pass to Yanmar. The Red Wings have it behind the cage. Here’s a short pass to Sherro. carries it into the offensive end up the middle. Kicks it away with ease. Trying to clear and they get it out of harm’s way. Picked up along the wall by Cider. Slides it over to Captain. Puck dumped in. Detroit’s got possession of the puck. The Redskins take it across the blue line. Takes a shot. Oh, what a chance. And puts it just wide. Well, the pup was right in his wheelhouse. He only had a small margin and wasn’t able to hit it. And a great save. Well, timely save is everything to your team. And this goalender, he rails his team out. Oh, what a save in front. A player should never be left alone in the slot, but man is the goalender to task here. Gets out in front of it and makes a save. They’ve got numbers here. Here’s a shot. Denise with a save. Taken along the wall by Mapani. Detroit’s got the puck. Moves it quickly over the breaker. They bang, but they don’t break here, James. This is a 200 ft play. When you take care of business in your own end, it ends up going the other way. It is something that coaches look for. How you defend, how you can turn pucks over and get going north. They capitalize, they execute, and they wind up on the score sheet. Lots of time left in this period. The Red Wings still trail by a goal here, but they are back into this one. Only down by one. Edmonton’s got a hold of the puck off the draw. Takes the feed. Slides the puck across to Manstein. Quick feed to Johansson. And now he moves it to Larkin. Oh, and he tracks it perfectly in the offensive end. Nice zone entry from the middle. Grabs control of it at the point. Puck grab by Dry Cycle and that’s broken up. Rips it. Oh, he’s stopped on deflection with the one. They are really buzzing here in the offensive end. And look at this circle here in a huge offensive zone face off here. They’re going to try to maintain all that momentum that they had just moments ago. And it all starts with the face off. They need to get a win here and they have to look to attack right away. James, the Bulls are just fatigued. I mean, he’s been standing on his head, but he he can’t continue to do it the whole time. They got to find a way to put it by him. slides it across. Slides the puck over from the point. They take control of it. Too much congestion. Blocks the shot. Oh, just a great heads up play by Wman. I get when you’re losing, James, that you want to get something going. You want to spark your team. You have the puck on your stick, but sometimes you can try and do too much. And I think that’s a product of that as he loses the puck. Oh, love the defensive stick work there to poke that one away. Detroit’s looking to break out of their own end from the right side and up the middle. Grabbed along the board by Frederick. sends the pass over to the game plan with good habits and there are kinds of I love the goal on this play but I think I even like the assist better. I mean the contact that is initiated to be able to get possession of the puck is the reason why the whole play starts. Just love that initiator. Detroit’s got to be feeling good about their game once again, evening the score so quickly. Yeah, and that’s a counter punch, right? And that’s what the coach wants to see. You can get down by one, you’re in a deficit. But you don’t dig the hole deeper or further down. You find a way to be assertive. What I like about their game is they found a way to get physically engaged and with that is more opportunity. Quick pass to McDavid, puts it on and they got caught up in traffic and hits a stick. Moves it to Barren. Takes the feed up ahead. The Oilers gain control of the puck. Looks to make a play over to Menapani. Moves the puck into the attacking area. There’s the whistle. We’re ready to get things back going again. Sneaks away with the puck after he was tangled up on the draw. Tremendous plus save by Gibson. Who wants ice cream? Get your ice cream. And they take possession here inside the offensive zone. Made that stop. Ben Reikes moving it ahead. The Oilers look to start the transition game. The energy is certainly there. Well, this is a goal that’s going to rally the bench as well here, James, because it’s about being in good defensive posture to be able to intercept the puck. You also have to have an uncanny sense of when to jump. So, it’s timing as well, but activating, getting involved, getting the helper. All of it starts with that initial play. Detroit’s gone up by one after that goal here in the first. Yeah, and it certainly changes the mindset. You got a little bit of jump to your step. You’re more confident. Now you got to attack. You got to push when your opponent’s down. Across and that’s intercepted by Echo. Edmonton’s in on the offensive attack now. and skilled using the stick to put the puck away. Tenacious battle for the puck along the wall. Gets it over to Van Remsteike. The Red Wings are hanging on to this onegoal lead. They’d love to add another. Detroit’s won the face off deep in their own end. Scoops up the puck here. passes it over to Kane. Oh, the spot on that pass. When you take the initial shot, you follow up, you still have the eyes to find the stick and then bury your chance. Such a great play all the way around. In today’s game, the goalenders are just so good. You don’t often beat them oneonone, which is why you got to follow up on your rebound. You got to hound those pucks. He does it. He buries it. some last second communication before both teams get ready to drop the puck here. The Red Wings going to hold to the puck off the draw from the neutral zone. Now a little dipsy doodle and he loses possession of the puck. He’s by such a slick set of hands. He’s trying to manipulate his opponent one by one, but he tries one too many, James, and he loses the puck. And that’s a great head play by Nurse. Playing with confidence is one thing, but then you can be overconfident as well, James. When we have a look at it, James, it looks like it’s redirected. And that’s just beautiful timing and get the hands away from the body, be able to get it to go the opposite direction of the goalender. Edmonton’s come to life here as they finally got a goal of their own. Well, they certainly have and they’re showing that offensive production, the ability to get to the net and they’ve countered, gotten within one. And now he angles it across to Debrink. Here’s a chance to make something happen inside the neutral zone. Sends a pass over. Great use of the twig as he puts that one away. Detroit’s got a hold of it along the wall. The Red Wings look to be on a mission tonight. Already up by two here and we’re still only in the first. Well, the mission is possible because they’ve been dominant out there tonight, James. Here they come through the neutral zone. There’s an injection of energy with that hand. Detroit’s got the puck along the boards. The Red Wings gain control of it. denied by the goalender. Wow, James. I mean, not everyone can elicit a thunderous hit like that. I mean, he just clobbered his opponent. Some last second communication with the D as centers get ready to drop the puck. They take possession as he locks him up off the face off. Nice zone entry on the left side. Loose by the check. Oh wow. That’s incredible save. I don’t even know how he got to that. That’s fierce athleticism to be able to get back to the net and make that save. James, that was amazing. Got to love how both of these teams are playing so fast right now. I mean the quick counters in the transitions are creating a lot of speeds which are generating scoring chances at both ends. Detroit’s won the faceoff deep in their own end into the attacking end. fires it. Oh, he knocks him with the save. I think he got the blocker on it. Goenders headed to the bench. They’re going to go for the extra attacker here. Oh, and he tracks it perfectly. The offensive end. Oh, what a great save on the play. What a great job of tracking the puck up. One but two from the save. The Oilers haven’t stopped putting pucks on net and they lead it here late in the third. inside of the final minute here in the third. Right in front and that won’t go as it hits one of his own teammates in front. Brings the puck into the offensive end now. Moves it quickly over to Walman and tries to make a diagonal pass to McDavid. Oh, and a misfire as that goes right out of the zone. Here’s the across to the middle and that’s stopped. We got a whistle as the puck’s frozen. Official signals for the players to get into position and we’re about ready to drop the puck. And they win the draw here in their own end. Quick pass to Tricidle. A shot at the empty net. Scores into the empty net. This was right in my wheelhouse, James. These were the type of moments that I played in. Everyone can take a breath now. But the insurance marker has hit the 4×6 as that empty net goal went in. Everyone on the bench and on the ice knew that that put the game to bed. The Oilers wanted to focus on putting more pucks on net going into tonight’s game. They have done just that and then some here in the third. Detroit’s going to start off on the puck here in the neutral zone after winning that face off. That’s a good heads up play at center ice. Takes a shot. Oh, he has the answer on that one. Here’s a chance. Sends it in front. What a chance. But they can’t connect. Oh, what a stop there with time winding down. There’s the final horn and this one’s in the books. Detroit’s got a lot of soul searching after that third period meltdown tonight. Cheryl, when you’re playing against elite players, you got to start strong, but you got to finish strong, James. And this was a tale of three different stories. And that third period is one that they’ll want to put away behind them. Hope everyone had as much fun as we did here tonight. For all of us at EA Sports, I’m James Sabolski saying peace.
