Liam Coen Recaps Loss to Rams | Jacksonville Jaguars

Yep. Sure did. It was everything we said we we didn’t want to do um did occur and so starts with me. Got to figure it out. Got a long flight home and some days off to do that. How tough was it just to try to get anything going to get into a rhythm? Yeah. I mean, precisely when I talked about what it took to win this game and did a whole film, you know, my my meeting yesterday, um, it was everything about staying on schedule. Um, being able to get multiple runs off back to back so that we can run it, run it, stay on schedule, stay balanced. Um, and we didn’t do any of that again. Distressing is it for you? it all out of the week. Yeah, it’s it’s definitely frustrating, but you you just like everybody else in that in there, you know, you got to look inward first. Like, what am I doing as the head football coach that’s not clear right now? How am I communicating these things? How am I and how are we practicing these things? Um, that’s what I’ve got to look at, right? I mean, I’ve got to look at the whole thing ultimately, but um not going to stand up here and blame these players. It starts with me. You talked about earlier that you kind of knew what this team’s identity was earlier in the season. Physical. Yeah. Have you lost a little bit of that? I mean, I definitely think that some of the over maybe physic some of those things have hurt us like being over aggressive and being amped up in the last couple weeks has actually been a negative in some ways in terms of the penalties and some of the mistakes we’ve made. Um, you know, I definitely, you wouldn’t have guessed that we were here for a week prepared, ready to go play in this atmosphere. Um, by looking at it in terms of the way we started the game, I I’m very proud of our defense specifically in the second half of the game, like played their tails off. Obviously had a couple moments where, you know, we got the one obviously thrown over our heads again in a short yardage situation, but they gave us some stops and some opportunities in the second half. Uh, and we drove it and did some things with it. It’s just ultimately um didn’t execute once we crossed the 50. typically we weren’t being able to execute. So, um yeah, definitely frustrating this level of concern over this week, second week. Yeah. Yeah, it’s um you know, you feel for the guy in terms of wanting to um put him in a position to be successful. Um you know, I thought about that decision a little bit because it was 21 nothing at that point. um you know, you just kind of wanted to get some points on the board to to see a little positivity when you looked up at the scoreboard. Um and we ended up missing it. So, um I I just got to go talk to him before I comment on it. Concern drops today. Yeah. Um yeah, we got we’ve we’ve obviously need to make sure that um we’re in a position, you know, with our hands, with our violent to the tuck, with the way we’re looking the ball in. Um you know, and also ball plays, making sure the ball’s in the right spots and not, you know, all that stuff. I think there’s a combination of things. Um you know, still we got to keep throwing it though. I mean, can’t go running it, running it, running it. So that’s just the way it goes. loss obviously to take his heart reflect on the positive offensively but some of the big night he went over 100 yards for his first touchdown was that part of the plan or was it was it more result of lack of productivity elsewhere you know how do you see were you happy with his with his progress in terms of this yeah early on it was hard to get anybody into a rhythm offensively and then you know in the second half there definitely was a a plan going into the game that we wanted to utilize him more on the offensive side of the ball specifically trying to get the ball into his hands. Um and then the you know the first half was just kind of funky the way we couldn’t get anybody the ball consistently um and get into a rhythm and then he was able to make some plays in the second half. Trevor was uh able to find him on some things that were obviously designed to go to him in some ways. So uh happy that he got his first touchdown. Tough to to see it come in that moment. You guys have big plays taken off the board like Yeah. Yeah. How much is that? Yeah, it it definitely kills it for sure. Um, got to go watch the tape and see how he how we can coach our uh our guy Jarian differently on on the punt return, how we can coach him differently to to communicate how to play that play differently in order to not have a penalty there. um you know and then we had the punt return where they obviously we go you know they knock into them or whatever it was and nothing end up occurring. So it’s just we’re trying to figure out how to coach them and and communicate that stuff to our players but clearly um we’ve got to be more disciplined. You talked about fixing a lot of things. How important is it going to be during this by week to sort of get that process going moving forward? Yeah, I mean that’ll start on the flight home. you know, that opportunity to watch the tape, flush the feeling in some ways, which won’t go away for a little while, I’m sure, especially on a on a buy here. Um, so we’ve got to look at the self scout in all three phases. We’ve got to look at personnel in all three phases, how we’re utilizing it, how we aren’t utilizing it, where do we need to use guys more, use guys less. Um, it’s all going to get evaluated. um you said you spent seven days out here. I work with young people and um like I get to take them on residential trips and you get to see like a different side to young people when they’re away from home. some of the players that you said this probably their first time like away from home like is what have you learned about the sport that’s different from when you get to travel around America like you taking them across the learn Yeah I think just the like you’re saying the opportunity to see the world throughout the game of football obviously it’s frustrating to to lose a game right that’s the result that we’re not hunting up um but I think it’s still pretty cool experience to be able to have the opportunity to to this game of football has maybe brought some of these guys some opportunities that maybe they wouldn’t have ever had. You know, I definitely hadn’t traveled much as personally in my life and football has definitely given me the opportunities to do so. Two quick in your season as a head coach, what has been the biggest challenge in moving from offensive coordinator to leading the whole operation? Um, you know, I think making sure you know, the relation, not the relationship piece, but the communication overall just in making sure you’re you’re present in communicating with not just the offense, but the defense, the special teams, the players, the coaches, the staff. uh making sure that the standard is continuously being communicated at a high level and that those standards are being upheld every single day in terms of the details, the fundamentals, the schedule, all that stuff that goes into it. You know, used to live in a little bubble on on one side of the ball and now that is is definitely expanded. You guys played played a lot of soft defense in the first half. Was that part of the game plan? And did looking for anything. Um yeah, we tried um playing a little bit more man and and it seemed like when we did that we were getting a penalty called on us some way, shape or form. So we were uh trying to find the balance between going zone and man u the balance between sending pressures and playing with foreman rush. Um so that that’s a balance. When you play a guy like Matthew, you have to mix up the looks. give him different looks pre- snap and post snap. And Matthew was on one today.

  1. The Colts looked great today against the Chargers. No doubt they're going to win the division. That's who we want to be. But you have to remember that coach, who took the Eagles to the Super Bowl as the OC, is on his third year. Each time it was a different quarterback. The whole team has had three years to master their offense and we clearly have not. But it's just the first season the Colts looked terrible then too. Even with good old min-shu as the QB coming with him from the Eagles.

  2. Woah. Good to see this response from Coen, after being at the game and watching the way the play unfolded. The Jags were outplayed by basic, simple play. At some point the players should have realised this in the 1st quarter or even the 2nd one, after that it was too late to adjust. Things weren't coming off for them and they just didn't pressurise the Rams' QB until the 4th quarter. It was a long train ride home!!! Both teams came into it 4-2 and the Jags just didn't look like they were switched on.

  3. This guy is just another waste of money shad khan paid. Dropped passes. Horrible play calling. Over thrown passes. Terrible blocking offense and defense. This is still the same old team that we’ve seen for years. Funny how money didn’t change anything when they got the big bucks. BTJ is a bust.

  4. Regardless I feel "Travis Hunter is only going to get better as the season goes on.."..he's incredible talent and speed! Hunter out runned 2 Ram players smoked them.on that T.D!

  5. Line can’t block. WRs constantly drop. QB over throws / makes odd choices. Kicker got the yips. The whole offense has been a clunky mess all season.

Defense has covered on every win but isn’t elite as a unit. They can’t force every game if the offense can’t sort it out.

  6. There are some players on this team that don't think quickly enough to play in this league. Unfortunately our QB may one of them. But I have faith in this coach and office to make the right moves and bring some of these issues to fruition. We are lucky to have LC in Jacksonville. Pull the trigger and go with the youth and development. Time to put some of these "veterans" on notice

  7. I stand with our coach and I stand with Trevor . I hate to see people already turning on our coach ! I mean really? We have four wins and that’s all we had through the whole damn season last year! Ruff past two weeks , I think coach c will get us back to where we need to be!

  8. Its 1000% not coen
S fault. He is the best coach jax has had by far.

It honestly doesnt matter who you bring in if you have a bone head as a qb and recievers who consistenly drop passes

  9. Don’t lose hope boys and girls we are a much better team than before we just gotta finish the tweaks , I 100% believe in Liam he’s trying to fix balkes years of mistakes and terrible draft picks

  10. Hey Jags OC. How about you make the #2 pick in the draft a priority EVERY week? How hard is that?!? The week before last you had him as a decoy, blocker or standing looking over to the other side of the field as Lawrence was throwing check downs and useless screen. You all have the media calling him a bust when you don’t even utilize him. Now he has a 100 game – in a loss – and you want to praise his effort? TF?!? That’s what he has always done, but your quarterback either can read his progressions to find him or he is not a feature in the game plan the day before the game. Either option is ridiculous. Play the man and open up the offense!
