Josh Anderson’s mysterious unsportsmanlike penalty

  1. Maybe the worst officiating I’ve ever seen in an nhl game. The boarding call might be the worst one honestly…

  2. Sportsnet showed it, he went up to the ref after slapping his stick on the ice in front of him yelling at him

  3. 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike…..skating?

Happy Edmonton won, but fuck these refs need to be held accountable. They should be forced to answer media after every game. At the very least they can shed light as to why calls were made/not made

  4. Someone call Kash Patel because pretty sure the refs are in business with Bet360

  5. Is… Did they call the generic frustrated swat at the puck that pretty much every player does when they screw up and it creates a goal?

  6. Edmonton is good. They didn’t need the refs helping them tonight. They probably could’ve launched their own comeback win without aid from the stripes.

Winning is always fun, but it’s a lot less fun when it doesn’t feel like it was fair.

  7. As an Oilers fan…this is such a shitty way to get an advantage.

Edit: I genuinely cannot believe that was considered a penalty. Unless Anderson hit someone with the puck, I just see a frustrated player.

  8. The reffing was shit, but the amount of people believing Anderson got the penalty for digging the puck outta the net is sad.

  9. I’ve written this elsewhere, but seriously: Given the status of sports betting as a legal business now, the question of competition manipulation is actually an emerging societal issue.

What are appropriate safeguards against it? How is that verified?

I found the following white paper that summarizes the landscape: https://cces.ca/sites/default/files/content/docs/2024-03/cces-mgss-cm2023-whitepaper-e.pdf

The take home message: fixing a game isn’t even necessarily criminal in Canada. People are indeed pushing for better frameworks. But the league needs to have a more robust policy surrounding it. If not, stop advertising betting sites.

As honest hockey fans it may be best to become more aware of “competition manipulation” as an unregulated aspect of sport, as a systemic issue, and to understand how globally this has been recognized and addressed. This has been a plague on European Football for ages. Perhaps sequelae of this will finally resolve the whole Colin Campbell conflict of interest situation.

It took a few years to change the LTIR loophole. It took a few years to address headshots in the neutral zone. So I hope it can be addressed in some way, either internally or by legislation.

But if trust in the game erodes, not only does that harm the value of the teams, but also I bet people aren’t going to bet on games as much. It is in the interest of everyone to have an honest system.

  10. All the people who think it was pulling the puck out of the net and firing down the ice need to go watch some of the other feeds. This clip doesn’t show the part where he was banging his stick on the ice screaming at the ref. Which was when the ref put his hand up. I think he must have said something pretty bad for the ref to actually call the penalty. But even as an Oilers fan this was super soft and entirely fucked up. Whats even crazier is that refs dont have to explain anything, answer any question or face the media. Sorry Habs fans that was a great game with a brutal ending.

  11. Is there some secret bet between all American pro sports officials/referees/umpires to see who can be the most terrible

  12. Bet you it’s sports betting refs can change the outcome of the game just like that

  13. One early.penalty for Oilers, six straight for Montreal, four in third period.

Oilers second goal, Hutson cross checked in the back, falls, odd man rush leads to goal.

I hope the game fixing investigation comes to the NHL.
