Philadelphia 76ers Just Put The ENTIRE NBA On Notice After VJ Edgecombe’s HISTORIC Performance!

What a way to start the season, Sixers fans. An epic come from behind victory in that fourth quarter for Philadelphia on the road against the Boston Celtics which featured some historic performances from VJ Edgecomb, Tyrese Maxi, and just a gritty tough win that we haven’t seen from this Sixers team in quite a while. And we’re going to break down some of the great signs that we saw from this team in that first game, some of the things that they can work on as well. But we’re going to break it all down here on today’s show. Before we do, I want to give a big shout out and a big thank you to all of our real ones, all of our subscribers here at 76ers. Now, last night during our watch party, if you were not there, be sure to subscribe. We’ll do more watch parties in the future. It was awesome and we surpassed 24,000 subscribers during the night. really really appreciate everybody who tuned in and everybody who is subscribed to the channel for news, rumors, analysis, and more watch parties like that as well. Be sure to hit that sub button, lock us in right here at 76ers now. So, let’s get to recapping and talking about this game that was really a thriller. And for a while there, it looked like the Sixers were going to let this one slip away. They had a halftime lead. Celtics went on a third quarter run. But in that fourth quarter, down by as much as 13, Philadelphia fought back, of course, led by Tyrese Maxi and VJ Edgecomb. Ended up winning this one by one after at the end a couple shots by Payton Pritchard went offline. That could have won Boston the game. They did not. And we got to start by talking about the rookie, the third overall pick. The phenomenal performance from VJ Edgecomb. Just absolutely historic. and 347 and three. You see the numbers on the screen. He just looked so comfortable, so in control, so aggressive from the start, scoring in a in a variety of ways right in the beginning. Had some catch and shoot threes, got him in rhythm, started attacking the basket, had a couple big dunks in that first quarter, and was a big first quarter for VJ Edgecomb, and then throughout the night, never settled. I love that he took 26 shots and 13 threes. That is what you love to see. And it was a record setting night for VJ Edgecomb. He accomplished all of this in his first ever NBA game on the road in a tough place to play at TD Garden in Boston. The most first quarter points ever in an NBA debut by a rookie with 14, beating out a record previously held by LeBron James. most points in a rookie in a rookie debut since Wilt Chamberlain in 1959. What are we talking about? Wilt most points in a rookie debut in 76ers history, beating out a record previously held by Allen Iverson, who had 30 in his rookie debut. And the only player to score 30 plus in a rookie debut this century, last one to do it, Lamar Odum back in the late 90s. man, watching him play, right? VJ Edgecomb really does have a chance to be special. And yes, it was one game, but some of the things you saw in this game against Boston, right, the athleticism was on full display. The finishing, which was a question coming into the NBA, has been phenomenal. The three-point shot was falling in. It looks smooth. It looks good. He was getting open looks off the catch, knocking him down. He doesn’t play like a rookie. And even going back to the preeason, right, he just looks so comfortable out there. And this pairing of Tyrese Maxi and VJ Edgecom looks to be a great one. VJ, man, to took him with that third overall pick. Starting night one, setting records in his first ever game. The sky’s is really the limit for this kid. I love how much better he’s already gotten. And that first performance was just something special to watch. Philadelphia got a good one. And funny enough, VJ Edgecom rising up quickly after one game in these rookie of the year odds. He was around these numbers here, closer to plus,500, I think about plus 1,200 before that first game. And then Cooper Flag and Mavs kind of had a stinker in their first game. Got dominated by Victor Webbyama and the Spurs. And obviously VJ had that crazy night. He shot all the way up the rankings to second. And that gap between Flag and VJ in the odds, that’s pretty close. A lot of people thought coming into the year, and I I thought this as well, Flag was kind of a runaway for for rookie of the year. And of course, it’s been one game, but man, VJ Edge can really really impress in that first game. And if he can keep doing, not he doesn’t even need to be that good, but keep doing the things and building on the habits he showed, he could he could win this rookie of the year race pretty pretty easily. So, man, what a performance. What a night. Just seeing Philly fans on social media, on Twitter, you know, in the chat during the watch party. Just get excited about something like this and and have some hope for this young kid. It’s it’s just so great to see after what happened last year. A spark of energy, a spark of positivity. It’s what this franchise really needed. So, spam VJ down in the comments section right now. Show love to the kid and let’s hope he can keep stringing together some good performances. But of course, we got to talk as well about his running mate, his backcourt mate in Tyrese Maxi, who came out and made a statement as this entire 76ers team really made a statement to the rest of the NBA, but made a statement in this first game. Maxi with one of the easiest and and most fluent 40 pieces I have ever seen in my life. Super efficient, 13 to 24, including seven of nine from three. And you know, a lot of his work coming off the dribble, playing fast in transition. He was uber efficient in transition. And some of the moves he put on some of these Celtics defenders, stepping back, hitting threes, deep threes at that, too. Man, it was just beautiful to watch, especially this pairing of Maxi and VJ together. And VJcom wasn’t the only one setting records here tonight. Tyrese Maxi tied with Hal Greer for the most points in a season opener for a Philadelphia 76er with that 40piece. Again, just played like a grown-up, I I think is kind of the best way I can describe this, right? Wasn’t playing too fast, was efficient with the shots he was taking, was getting to his spots, and was always under control. Like I mentioned, this duo, which already looks like one of the best back court duos in the NBA, setting records as a duo as well. The first pair of teammates to each score 30 points and hit at least five threes in a season opener in NBA history. It’s never been done before. Truly a historic night for Philadelphia in TD Garden. And look, I’ve talked leading up to this season about Tyrese Maxi needing to take that leap, right? I I felt like coming into the year, he’s obviously been a very good player. He’s been an all-star, but with the uncertainty surrounding Joel Embiid and what he’s going to look like, and we’ll get to Joel Embiid here in just a minute, I said Maxi really needed to take that next step and be that 1A alpha type of player, right? something like we’ve seen a Jaylen Brunson do for the New York Knicks or like we’re seeing Kate Cunningham do for the Detroit Pistons. These younger guards that are really taking over and becoming the number one options for their team. Maxi has shown that and showed that in that first game against Boston. Love what he did. You can clearly tell he is the leader. He is the alpha. He needs to keep on doing that again. If he does, this team can get to the heights that they want to reach in terms of getting back to the playoffs and maybe making a deep run. It starts with Tyrese Maxi and a great start for him in this season. Get down in the comments section, fill in the blank for me. I’m curious where everybody is at on this one, of course, just one game. Uh we’re going to overreact a little bit obviously with all these things. Want to see some more, but just so exciting. Maxi and VJ a top blank backcourt in the NBA. Are they already top five, top 10? Let me know what you think down in the comment section. Now, it wasn’t just Maxi and VJO, although they were the large reason why the Sixers won this game. I don’t think Philly wins this game without the performance of two-way player Dominic Barlo. He was fantastic. Another guy we had talked about leading up to the season, a super underrated and sneaky signing for Philadelphia. a guy who at that four spot started at the power forward for the Sixers in this game as a two-way player and made an impact with his height, his length, blocking some shots, dunking the ball, and playing hustle basketball, right? Grabbing offensive rebounds. And we talked about how badly the Sixers team needed a player like that with that skill set. And the coaching staff and players have been talking about it all throughout training camp, all throughout the preseason, how he gets these rebounds that you just never expect him to be able to get. And that is so so valuable. We don’t ever see that happen with the Sixers against Boston. 13 points, eight rebounds, five of those offensive rebounds. Also had five assists and four of eight from the field. Is a guy that doesn’t really need to do a whole lot on offense in terms of, you know, giving him the ball or expecting him to create any offense. No, he does this all organically, playing the flow of the offense and just playing hard. And he’s on a two-way deal. Are you kidding me? And shout out to Adam Aronson as well who post a lot of clips on his uh alternate account here on Twitter talking about what he saw from Dominic Barlo and of course started on opening night for the Sixers. Grabbed those five offensive rebounds as I mentioned in that again one-point win over Boston. Every single one of Barlo’s offensive rebounds led to points. He’s right. It completely swung the game. Right. Think about that. The Sixers won this game by one point. Barlo, five offensive rebounds, all led to points. Tap backs out to Quinton Grimes for a three, right? Those type of things. The Sixers do not win this game without that kind of individual effort from Barlo. Willing to do what it takes to win. He said that leading into the season. I’m not here to league lead the league in scoring. I am here to help this team win games. He did that on night one. As did fellow two-way player Jabari Walker. I also loved what he did. didn’t shine quite as much as Barlo did. But man, Walker in a similar sense, another guy at that four spot who really thrives on making these hustle plays and grabbing these rebounds that you don’t expect him to. Even if he doesn’t grab the rebound, there was one time I remember where he went to go for an offensive rebound, couldn’t quite get it, but because he fought hard for it, it went off Boston. Sixers did retain possession. And you know, the stat line doesn’t scream anything crazy to you. six points, four rebounds, did grab two offensive rebounds, three or four from the field, but just made a ton of hustle plays, played well for this team down the stretch when they were making that comeback in the fourth quarter. Played a bunch in that fourth quarter and solid enough defensively. Even made a pull up mid-range, which I don’t really think isn’t his game, but you know, good to see him confident enough to make and take that shot, even if it was at the end of the shot clock. Both Jabari Walker, Dominic Barlo, again on two-way deals. They both absolutely deserve standard contracts for the Sixers. Now, with them being on two-way deals, they can each only play 50 regular season NBA games before the Sixers must make a decision. Either sign them to the active roster for the rest of the season or multiple seasons or return to the GLeague, right? And right now, Philadelphia has one roster spot open. I expect Dominic Barlo probably by the deadline will get that last remaining roster spot and that full contract. But I think Jabari Walker deserves to be on this team and in this rotation especially come playoff time. So Sixers is gonna have to open up some spa some space for him. I think an Eric Gordon or an Andre Drummond who both did next to nothing in this game. Eric Gordon actually didn’t play at all. Drummond very minimally. One of those two could be gone in a kind of salary dumping roster move opening type of trade in order to free up space for both of these guys to be on standard contracts. They absolutely both deserve that. Still more to get to coming up around the corner. We’ll talk about Joel Embiid and his rough night. He spoke about it. Obviously, it wasn’t great. And I have other observations and takeaways that we can discuss regarding the Sixers Celtics game. Before we do though, want to give a big time shout out to today’s sponsor here on 76ers now, and that is our friends at DraftKings. And these were my picks that I had heading in to Wednesday night’s game. Unfortunately, this parlay did not hit for me, but this is how easy it is to play. And you know, an example of something you could go with. I took Sixers money line. Of course, that did hit. But you know, when you parlay them all together, they all have to hit for you to win your money. I took Tyrese Maxi 25 plus points. Of course, he had 40. That easily hit. The one that did not hit for me, Joel Embiid, five plus assists. That was unfortunate. Only played 20 minutes. And we’ll talk about Embiid right around the corner. If it had hit, could I have turn $100 into 465? Unfortunately, I did not. But that is how easy it is to play. Of course, odds and lines are always subject to change. Download DraftKings. Now, let’s get to Joel Embiid because it was a really tough night for him in his debut this season for Philadelphia. Now, look, he hasn’t really played basketball in a long time. He played that one preseason game for the Sixers a couple of Fridays ago, but before that, you know, he had that surgery what back towards the end of last season, March, April around that time frame. And so, you know, he hasn’t played a real basketball game in a very long time. And I think that did show against Boston. The statline pretty ugly, right? Four points, six rebounds, two assists. Shot just one and nine from the field, including 0 of four from three. was clearly hesitant. Was playing on the perimeter for a lot of the time he was on the floor. Didn’t want to get into the post. He had Jaylen Brown on him a lot early in this game. Clearly a mismatch, but didn’t seem to want to take advantage of the mismatch. Didn’t seem to want to get into the post and and get dirty inside. He wanted to play on the perimeter, which, you know, understandable with the injuries, not what you love to see. I thought he was moving around pretty well. Obviously, not jumping a whole lot. He he didn’t even take the jump ball in this game to start the game. That was Dominic Barlo. And Abid spoke about his rough night and look it’s going to be a process with him as we know as we go throughout the season. Abid asked about his rough shooting performance said look I’m good it’s going to take a while obviously being on a minutes restriction again he only played 20 minutes playing shorter stints it’s hard to kind of get into the rhythm but I got to figure it out. That’s the way they have it set up. It’s annoying but if I want to play I don’t really have a choice and I want to be out there as much as possible. And look, it is important for him to be out there as much as possible. Even if the shots aren’t falling, because Embiid’s presence alone does make an impact for this Sixers team. You know, even when he’s not knocking down shots, one and nine from the floor on the night, the Celtics are still setting doubles his way almost every time he touches the ball. And just his gravity alone opens up so much for Maxi, for Edgecomb, everybody else on this team. So, just him being out there and his defensive presence as well. There were a couple times where players would drive in. I remember Jaylen Brown in one instance had an open lane, drove in, saw him beat in there, had a kick out, right? Couldn’t get an easy bucket at the rim. So, just his presence alone is so important for the Sixers team. And I think eventually the shots will come along as he gets into actual real playing shape, but he talked about playing shorter stints, only played 20 minutes, and didn’t play a stint longer than six minutes at any point in time. So, clearly that’s the plan the Sixers have set up for him here at the beginning of the season. I will say this, like a game where Joel Embiid goes one for nine, 04 from the field, only plays 20 minutes and does not make really his impact felt all that much, there’s no way the Sixers win this game last year. They lose this game by 20 plus points. When the Celtics go on that third quarter run and the Sixers get down as much as 13 in the fourth, this game is over, right? Especially with Embiid not playing up to his standards. But the this year, man, it’s just it’s just different, right? The guys are more focused. They’ve talked about it all off season long. They talked and Nick Nurse has talked about playing hard, playing physical always. You know, you see the Sixers team play and you say, “Man, that is a team that played their asses off and you could absolutely say that with what happened last night.” Some of my other observations here before we round out today’s show. Justin Edwards out of the rotation only played uh what, like five seconds in this game. Came in at the end of a quarter as a defensive substitution for Andre Drummond. Outside of that, did not play at all. had a really really rough summer. Has not played well since the end of last season when he had that good stretch to close the year. Wasn’t very good in summer league. Wasn’t very good in the preseason. And getting out outplayed in the rotation by guys like Dominic Barlo, by guys like Jabari Walker, right? Obviously, Kelly Ubé as well. Even without Paul George and Trenon Watford, who also will take up minutes at the forward spot, Edwards did not get minutes. Something to monitor there. Kelly Ubé up and down in this game. He took uh six shots. All six of those shots were threes. He went two of six on that. That’s not his game, man. A 30% three-point shooter. I would like to see him get more involved making cuts toward the basket, getting downhill. That’s why I like him better offensively. But he was good defensively in this game, especially at the end of the fourth quarter. Quinton Grimes had some good, some bad. Finish with 10 points, five rebounds, five assists, but also five turnovers. I think you you can kind of see uh where, you know, him holding out for the entire summer, wasn’t able to practice with the team. uh still needs to get used to playing with his teammates and knowing where everyone’s going to be and being on the right, you know, communication with these guys, but he did make some big-time shots and also close this game as well. A Demona had 15 not great minutes, 3,000 that time and, you know, there’s a reason that he wasn’t in there to close the game as well. But I’m going to talk about this closing lineup to end this fourth quarter. So, at the start of the fourth quarter, this is what the lineup looked like for Philadelphia. You had Maxi Grimes, Ubé, Jabari Walker, and Joel Embiid in there. They were only in there with this lineup for just about three minutes. And then this is when the Celtics lead started to get larger and larger to start the fourth. And you’re thinking, man, this is not going well. But just a few minutes into the fourth, Nick Nurse made an adjustment. He took out Joel Embiid. He said, you know what? He’s played 20 minutes. This is around how much you want him to play. He’s not really helping us win this game. Let’s switch it up and let’s go with the guys that are helping us win this matchup. VJ Edgecom came in and Dominic Barlo came in to play the center. And in this stretch from 918 left in the fourth to 357 left in the fourth, the Sixers were able to cut down on that big lead led by this group right here with again two-way players on the floor out of the five guys out there for Philadelphia. And this is the lineup that really brought them back into the game. And then I love what Nick Nurse did as well at the 357 mark until the end of the game. put Kelly Ubé in for Jabari Walker despite the rough offensive night for UB. This was a big substitution for Nick Dick Nurse because Ubé made some big plays defensively down the stretch with his athleticism uh that you know Jabari Walker just not a great athlete despite all the the good things he did and this was your closing lineup in the final four minutes of the game. That is just crazy to think about with Barlo being out there and the three guard lineup of Maxi, Edgecom, and Grimes. So like I want to give a big shout out to Nick Nurse obviously you know first game of the year you’re experimenting with a lot of different lineups experimenting with different rotations and you know even doing something like putting Dominic Barlo in the starting lineup was a very very bold move and obviously paid off. I thought the adjustments they made in this one were great. I think Nick Nurse did a good job coaching this team in this game and then of course making those substitutions and those lineup changes in that fourth quarter as I mentioned. So shout out to Nurse. got some extra pieces to play with and I’m excited to see how it progresses moving forward, how it changes uh from matchup to match up, but you know, Boston is a smaller team, not a lot of great bigs. So, you know, when you go up against a team that has some bigger bodies, does that change things? We’ll see. But like what I saw from Nick Nurse in that first game in what is obviously a big year for this 76ers head coach. All right, that’ll do it here on today’s show. Before we hop on out of here, get back down in the comments section for me. I want your oneword reaction to this win over the Boston Celtics. Get down, let me know. One word. I think mine, man. Just phenomenal maybe or even like relieved just to see this team playing in the way they did fighting back. It was great to see you. Let me know down in the comments section. 3. Not afraid to say it looks like I was wrong about Grimes. He does fit this team. He does play defense. He deserves 12-16 range. This could be the best fit for him as well. He’s been other places. He did not get the same opportunity he’s getting in Philly.
