Michael Penix Jr. on challenges of Atlanta Falcons vs San Francisco 49ers matchup | Press Conference
Um I feel like we had an opportunity a lot of opportunities to win this game today. I feel like we didn’t capitalize on uh the big time ones, you know, the the big fourth down, you know, late late in the game. And you know, it’s different times, you know, just small things that we missed as as a offense to to be able to come out victorious today. I feel like the defense gave us a lot of opportunities to take advantage of, you know, um the the opportunity that we had, which was to get the lead, and we just didn’t capitalize whenever we needed to. Something took away. I don’t know. I feel like that’s something we got to go look at the film and, you know, see see what it was and how how we can be better in that aspect, you know. But um I don’t know. We’ll have to we’ll have to check the film out to see what what it looks like. How much does not able to run the ball consistently like you guys want to how much does that kind of affect what y’all ultimately want to do? I mean what we ultimately want to do and want to be we want to win. You know I feel like whenever you you try to think about it as like okay we we couldn’t run today so you know we weren’t like at the end of the day we got to find a way to win. you know, if it’s on the ground, if it’s in the air, you know, whatever it takes, that’s what we got to do. And um you know, they they they did um do good on the in the run game, the uh the 49ers, they did good in the run game, you know, like you said, but um we got we got to find a way. We got to find a way. We got too many good players uh on this team uh to to not find a way. What happened? Yeah, I don’t even know what happened. I just got rolled up on. Um I feel good right now and um we just keep it pushing. Huh? I don’t even remember. I guess we’ll find out. Right before the half, um did you think you were outside the box on that throw? Um I don’t know. I don’t know. Uh we feel like we was in an ozone situation, which is basically um you know have a either we got a completion or we don’t. and and get rid of the ball. And that’s that’s just what we taught in that situation. And um I don’t know, I just can’t I I didn’t I knew I couldn’t take a second that in that in that situation right there, but obviously the 10-second run off didn’t help. So, it feel like that kind of night that there were, you know, seven plays that you didn’t make today. For sure. For sure. Like I said, man, I feel like the defense gave us a lot of opportunities. Um they they had a lot of big time stops and like you said, man, we got to take advantage of those those key plays, those big time moments. Uh if if we want to win football games. What were they doing to take Drake away? What were they doing to take Drake away? Yeah. Yeah. Um I don’t know. That’s something I have to go look at the film and see. Um but you know, a player like Ken, we got to find a way to get him the ball and we will. Were you surprised after coming off the basketball game last week? I know. It’s football. It’s the NFL, you know. It’s it’s tough. It’s hard to win. Um, you know, but we do everything uh throughout the week to to strive to do that. And today we fell short and now all we can do is go back to the drawing board and, you know, find a way to win next week. All right. Thank y’all.

He needs to grow up and take that damn durag off and become a real man!!!
The offensive plays calling got to get better if not hear we go again.. Shannon would of played our players the right way
Bijan is the offense, Penix is a game manager who almost always throws to the side.
Talks tough, but you put that helmet on him and he’ll fold everytime!
I am real tired of this…
Not the guy. Slow too
The Falcons didn't focus on the details, situational football. Ineligible players downfield, the offensive line didn't have a good game. Penix throwing the ball away and not knowing to be outside the pocket hurt putting points on the board. Divine Diablo going down hurt the Falcons defense. Kaden Ellis tried to do to much in his absence. Betrand and Ellis left their assignment and McCaffery beat them for a touchdown and a first down.

Rise up 🏹3-3
Your offensive coordinator let you down Mike
Way to tell they ass….. They thought you was gon mope about the lost. Ask them how do most teams fare against the 49ers.
A little accountability would be nice. 100% on Mike tonight. He has to start taking those next steps. I thought tonight was the night so wrong.
Not sure how he can’t answer the question about why Drake wasn’t open. You got your first read and then you got your second read on the play He gotta learn to read the defense and the field . Hopefully he’ll learn from this
Gotta fire z rob and lure mcdaniels from Miami to be OC. Z Rob have me saying wtf at least twice on every drive and it only takes one dumb play to crush all momentum. WAY too many screen plays to Pitts when the middle of the field was open most of the game. (Shouldn’t be throwing multiple failed screens to our TE, period.) just heinous play call.
Why no high point balls to Drake and Pitts? Just doesn't make any damn sense.
This guy isn’t ready
IF YOU SEEING THIS OUT OF THE POCKET AND MOVE AROUND YOU STAND IN POCKET WAY TO LONG AND TAKE SACKS AND THROW BALL IN STANDS !!!! RUN AROUND AND MAKE PLAYS SCHOOL YARD BALL COME ON
Absolutely infuriating loss
As a falcon fan it’s just time to accept the fact that the falcons are a joke. We can’t stay consistent to save our lives. We have all the weapons we need on offense and defense and we can’t get the job done. It’s sad and it’s hard to actually think we can be a legit football team because we’re not.
Learn from ur mistakes kid
Get out the pocket and get yards with your legs stop being scared, you running for 2 yards. Also your passes is off target 🎯. You have been playing football your whole life. Move the ball. You smiling but we ain’t we tired of losing. That was a busted up weak 49ers team. And you look tired out there and complaining. Get to work man ! The time is now
Michael "you know" Penix Jr., we don't know, so please tell us. I don't think you can read defenses. When D blitzes, he is like deer in the headlights.
I don’t like these “I don’t know” responses he’s giving. He sounds either very naive or PR trained not to answer questions. I’m not jumping off the wagon like a lot of these so called “fans” in the comments, but Mike has a lot of growing to do still fr. He’s only 9wks into his pro playing career. I think his real test will be when he plays New England in a couple of weeks. Right now Drake Maye looks like the best QB in the draft class. If Mike can outplay him I think a lot of the fans will quiet down. If he can’t, and he looks bad, then people will stop believing in him. I think by a QBs first complete season you can see if he has “IT” or not. So far I don’t think we’ve seen Mike have a GREAT game where he’s in complete control. He’s been a roller coaster of good moments and bad ones. I need to have faith that when we’re in tough situations he can make SOMETHING happen. Right now we’re like a basketball team that lives and dies by the 3 ball (Bijan). Even as is I still see this team winning 9 games because the schedule is easy and there’s too much talent, but it’ll feel hollow if we only beat bad teams and can’t beat good ones unless they are flukes (injuried best players or referee help etc.). Out of our 11 games remaining 5 are against playoff contenders. We have to be able to win at least 2 of those games for me to trust and have faith in Mike going into 2026 (Pats, Colts, Seahawks, Bucs, Rams).
I've told my family and friends this from the beginning. The QB class Penix came out with goes like this. Nix, Daniels, and Maye came in ready for the NFL. JJ, Penix, and Williams will need help to succeed in the NFL. Penix doesn't read the field well. Once you get him off his 1st read, he struggles. He misses too many easy throws. If you watched the game last night, almost all the balls he threw to Pitts were below his knees. He is 6'6. He doesn't give the players the ball so they can get Yac. He is a project QB who needs good coaches around him to make it.. We definitely don't have that in the head coach or OC.
Dude, is not the franchise solution. Hoping we can figure out a solution to get a first round pick this offseason because a QB is going to be a need. Can't throw to the middle of field, errant throws and poor accuracy, stiff in the pocket, terrible footwork. Man is an older low ceiling prospect. Was worth taking a flyer on him but he's not going to all of the sudden get better.
Mike gonna be alright. Gotta go through ups and downs. This the nfl. Outside of mahomes , all the best qbs in the league now, goff, Mayfield, darnold, Daniel Jones all had to struggle
When was the last time Bates made a play? Everyone seems to overlook his inabilities due to his veteran status. Hughes lacks the skills at this level.
Penix, I have been patient with you; you need to seek the skills to extend the plays, if that means run the ball; run the ball. You're not a 40-year-old man, stop acting like it.
I normally don't mentioned names in my comments, but as you can tell, my frustration level is boiling over after losing to the 49ers.
At the end of the day, good teams find a way to win the game.
Penix is nervous and afraid to take off running . He is not a dual threat . If the offensive line doesn’t block well and let him sit in pocket we in trouble . Everybody will be blitzing this dude and he will collapse in pocket . The film says he is not gonna run . I don’t know if more games and experience will make him mobile , he just DONT WANT TO DO IT 🤷🏾♂️ Again he will get Blitz
He needs to learn more pocket presence more than anything, run out side the pocket more or something, you’re a sitting duck by standing there
If Penix is going to be a pocket passer he better get a better understanding of how to reset the pocket💯
Lock in Falcons! 😤
Find a way to hit the easy ones. This is not your fault. Yes, you have played poorly but the coaching is not helping you. Raheem has tricked people his whole career.
Yall know damn well MPJ9 ain’t the problem 😂😂😂 we are an offensive coordinator away from winning the Super Bowl
Starting to think Penix just isn't the guy. Overall, he's actually horrible. The amount of passes this dude throws straight into the dirt is more than I've ever seen. It's time to bench him imo.
Yes he is a young QB and just 9 game in, but he's still talented enough and everyone has to work together to win the game. That's the goal.
he doesn’t progress in his reads and his accuracy
I believe the Atlanta falcons will bounce back we just have to too many mistakes that were made couldn't stop the run the offensive line couldn't do anything to propel what needed to be done Miami dolphins dirty birds rise up
Falcons build the offense up next season he deserves it
No matter what happens the rest of the season, the offensive line has got to be the offseason priority.
