Quentin Grimes Preseason Debut Was INSANE

Quinning Grimes made his preseason debut yesterday. Played 26 minutes, had 22 points, five assists, and three steals, four three-pointers as well. First time we saw him make an impact was after this VJ steel. Maxi finds him leaking in transition and it results in two free throws. And this is where I think you’re going to see a lot of value out of Quinn Grimes. This is a lineup without Tyrese Maxi and Joel Embiid. There’s really nothing going on throughout this possession. until Grimes gets this screen and then he’s acting like he’s going downhill. Extend that leg. A perfectly executed between my goodness. And look at the separation created. And now you got a solid mid-range jumper. He missed it, but we’ve seen he’s capable of hitting that shot. And having a guy with that ability in the lineup without Tyrese Maxi and Joel Embiid is just going to help the Sixers survive those minutes. Bona comes up with the offensive rebound. And look at this. The Minnesota defenders are so afraid of his three-point shot. And this right here is really his elite skill. This quick first step. He can get around defenders in a blink of an eye because of that. Especially in the closeout situation. And he draws another foul. Two more free throws. Once again, little things like this without Maxine Embiid on the floor is huge. He grabs a rebound, pushes the pace, and throws a nice lefty pass to Kelly Ubé. So now early in the shot clock, you got a paint touch. Nice pass from UB. Bona can’t finish it, but eventually he cleans it up and finishes the job. Let’s just appreciate this play by the Sixers. So much movement. And then Maxi being used as a screener, opens up a wideopen driving lane, decking a center. I mean, come on now. And just props to Nick Nurse for this play. But more importantly, the execution was elite. And now look at the defense early in the shot clock. Just wasting time. Rob Dillingham is a mess out there. The first pass of the possession comes all the way away from the basket. And also there’s only 13 seconds on the shot clock. Another little detail defensively I enjoy. He fights over this screen, stays locked on to Rob, which forces a quick pass, and that keeps the Sixers defense set and out of rotation. Sixers get the ball up quickly. And now Grimes is catching with space. And look at his defender. So worried about the three-point shot. A slight hesy burst of speed and he’s to the basket. He just smoked the layup. But again, the quickness attacking that close out. Look at Barlo on the offensive glass trying to fight for it and draws a foul. VJ Edgecom scored off the same exact play in the first quarter. Minnesota’s third stringers are caught sleeping again. Barlo working on the offensive glass, tips it to VJ. Great one more pass and then just a quickness catch and shoot and fire away. Nothing but net. Arguably the best catch and shoot shooter on the team. He’s operating the Spain pick and roll. Maxi screening again popping. He gets the rock. Great job of Maxi using his head. He’s looking to the left, but he knows the whole time he’s passing right back to Grimes. Because of that, Quinn Grimes is catching with so much space. And once again, the quickness attacking a close out. This time he’s side stepping, not driving. Wide open three created just like that. He can really create in a pinch. One dribble, wicked between. Two dribbles create some contact, get enough airspace to fire away. Unfortunate miss. And now he’s using his eyes against the defense. He’s just staring down that screen, acting like he’s going to take it. Boom. He’s going the other way out of nowhere, and he’s just too quick. No one can catch up. I mean, on this one, I don’t know what the defense is supposed to do. Locks up Dillingham late in the shot clock, gets the steal, and then he passes to VJ, who does the rest. He’s just a great basketball player who has really found his confidence in Philly. This was his game coming out of college. It just took some time, just like his college career, by the way. Started at Kansas, didn’t really work out, and really flourished once he got to Houston. Also, everyone likes to act that the 20 games at the end of the season last year was the only time he showed promise. No, he had an entire season in New York. He was playing that complimentary role. He was mainly a defender at that point because offensively he was just kind of a catchandoot threat. And I think some nights he was shying away because he just wasn’t as confident as he’s been in Philadelphia. And then next season he got replaced by Josh Hart because Thibido had a heart on for Josh Hart. Pause. And I think that situation really affected his confidence as well. He really found something in Dallas and he just took it to another level when he got to Philly because of the extra opportunity. I I just think he’s finally believing that he can be a guy in the NBA. It just took some time. And if you play basketball, you know, the more you age, the more confident you get as a player. I can’t wait to see what he does this season for the Sixers because with his skill set, whether they’re healthy or not, the Sixers badly needed. I mean, this this team is not a great shooting team, especially when they’re not full and one of their stars is missing, which in reality is going to be happening consistently most likely. So, yeah, let me know your thoughts below.

  1. I think the sixers will try to retain Grimes after this season. Most likely they won't bring back Oubre, Drummond, Lowry, and Gordon. There should be money available and Grimes said he wants to come back.

  2. Once McCain comes back, he becomes the 4th guard. This commentator foolishly claimed he was the best catch and shoot player on the team. McCain is a far better shooter.

  3. I do not see why Maxey, VJ & Grimes cannot all start since VJ & Grimes can alternate at the 3 given their defensive prowess… A healthy starting lineup with Joel & PG with McCain be the 6th man can be lethal in this wide open East… Just friggn stay HEALTHY one friggin year!!!

  4. I'm honestly surprised Quentin Grimes didn't go home to play PG for the 🚀🚀 but I'm glad he's staying one more year with us, dude is gonna get PAID next off-season!

  5. I wish Grimes had the touch at the end of those plays…missing the two pts consistently can lose you a game. But I’m just picking those plays. Still a huge positive impact, so I’ll just shut up.
