Gutsy win over Colorado proved the Carolina Hurricanes can battle through adversity

I started the show with the optimism about how sports and professional sports especially in the state of North Carolina got got something going on, right? Hornets won their opener. Panthers are over 500 for the first time in years. Uh Canes are traditionally really good and are again this year. Uh it it just seems like a good time the the Charlotte FC getting it done. Um, with that in mind, and it’s a Friday, and we got a weekend coming up, my kids got a trunk or treat tomorrow. Like, we’re just vibes are high, right? The candy is flowing this time of year. In the interest of positivity, could we positive spin zone the the effects of last night a little bit for the Carolina Hurricanes? Obviously, the win, and we’ve already talked about it, right? Uh, I love that the top line came out early in the game aggressive, right, with Jarvis and Aaho both scoring early. Eers probably deserve most of the credit for the Aaho goal. Uh, his aggressiveness was was noticeable. Um, I really liked that because it felt like they understood, all right, our blue line is struggling here. Let’s try to give him a little little insurance runs early. You know what I mean? Like, let’s get some let’s get some goals. I I liked a lot about the fortitude, but hear me out on this. We’ll start with a cliche and we’ll build from there. What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Right? We’ll start with a cliche and we’ll build from there. The Carolina Hurricanes beat a team that has I mean we could McKinnon Mar. We go on and on, right? They played three blueliners who combined for singledigit regular season appearances prior to last night. half of their blue line combined for like nine uh regular season NHL appearances. Alexander Nikian is is being talked about and and and thought about by the fan base as if he’s like like some seven-year veteran. has seven regular season games played, but compared to Nestrom who landed in in Colorado like 20 minutes before he was suited up and ready to play, Nikeshian is a grizzled old vet. And and LGO, he he’s sitting there, he played just last game against Vegas and he’s being treated as like, hey, show the new kid, you know, how how to make his way around here. There were times where where two of those were out killing penalties with a combined one previous start. Go and Nstrom were out there killing penalties. Yeah, it’s uh as I believe it’s Tyler in our chat said, it’s the Carolina hurt at Canaines right now. Not a bad pun. I’m usually not a pun fan, but that one I wasn’t expecting. Not bad. I was uh I had a a hockey game of my own last night. Actually started around the same time as the Canes game. Uh so I get in my car to come back to the house. It’s like second period I hear it on. I hear them saying uh Nestrom. I’m like, “How’d he how’d he get it?” I know they called him up. I didn’t think he was going to play. I didn’t even realize Miller was out. And at that point, Robinson and Carrier were both also already out for the game. it I mean it was it was one of those games where uh I almost think it operates as like a like a like a really hard conditioning day in training camp or something where as long as you make it out on the other side you’re more bonded because of it right the the the clip and if you were watching the game you you you may have saw it if not it’s gone viral a little bit here uh of of Sebastian Aaho on the bench right at the end of the game where he literally like uh the only way I can describe It is like a toddler falling asleep, like sitting in a high chair or something, and they just boom. Uh he he like tilts over with his head down. It looks like he’s falling asleep. Now, obviously, he wasn’t, but it just showed how exhausted they were, right? And it showed how how much effort they had put on the ice. And and everything that goes into it is a bummer until you’re on the other side of it. and and that game can be a microcosm with what they’re going to deal with because like Slavven and and Gostaspear even if they can come back soon, right, that those guys it’s going to take time to work their way in. Uh there was some hints that that perhaps some of the injuries are are are not going to be gone quickly after the game. Do we have Rod Brenammore updating on the the injuries? I I think I may have put the wrong clip in our rundown here. Um, I’ll call for an update on Robinson, Kerier, and Miller. Do we have that? Perfect. Max is on it. This is Rod Brydemore updating uh the media after the game on Robinson, Kerier, and Miller. All who either did miss the entire game or left the game with an injury. They’re going to be out both those guys, Robbie, and Will for looks like extended period. So, you know, tonight was a tough night for the injury thing. And Miller missed two. I don’t know what’s going on there. That that could be a while. So, it’s uh it’s tough tough on the injury front right now. So, if in case you can hear there’s a little little uh static there. Um it sounds like Kerier and and um Robinson could be a while and Miller is more of a complete unknown. He didn’t really know how long that could be, but obviously a complete unknown within the range of those options is out for a while. Yeah. And you never know with Rod, too. He could say, “Oh, he’s a little banged up.” and then he’d be out for three months. Or he could say, “Oh, it might be a while.” And then he all of a sudden he’s out next game and playing 22 minutes. So that’s kind of a kind of a crapshoot there. I like tweaked something. When he says he tweaked something that that means anything from 2 hours to two years. I think that’s what happened to Slavven in that last home game and he he hasn’t played this whole road trip and now he’s on IR. So I think that’s what happened to Yesper Fost a couple years ago and he hasn’t played any games something in that in that and then he retired. though. Um, so there’s like obviously a little bit of, and it’s a good point by Max, a little bit of uh, uh, vagueness there, but if they miss some time and if they miss significant time, it is a real bummer when you’re in it. But if you can come out on the other side of it still alive, you’re better for it because then the guys I mentioned that were out there with nine career appearances or whatever it was combined that they now have 30 career appearances combined or 40, right? They now have uh time on ice in every situation. They have chemistry with Walker and Chapfield and they and they know what it’s like to play in the NHL. So, if you get into a situation like the Canes did last year in the postseason at the end where you Jaylen Chatfield’s going down and and you’re you you have to choose between Morrow and Nikian and it’s the you’re choosing the lesser of neither of these guys have been in this situation before. You have players that have been around and have been playing well. Injuries stink, but if you make it on the other side, they build depth and they build uh callous, right? They they they build determination. I’m not I’m not going to sit here and say, you know, last night is what you want to have happened, but on a day where, you know, vibes are high, I I I do think there’s a world where it can help, but it’s going to get harder before it gets there. This next game against Dallas is tough. If who I mean any games where you miss if it’s just Jacob Slavven, that’s tough. You don’t replace a Jacob Slavven, but then when you start taking away all of the guys who were trying to replace Jacob Slavven, it just gets more difficult. It’s it’s, you know, we’ll talk about it throughout the show. I don’t know who they call up, particularly at the forwards. I don’t know who they call up, right? But I do vividly remember before the season when Bradley Nadau didn’t make the opening day roster and fans were super angry. Uh my first thought was and and I said it on air is the NHL that it’s not like the forwards on the opening day roster are the only ones that are going to be called upon this season. If Bradley Nadau is ready to play in the NHL and and they just started him in the AHL, it’s a benefit to have a guy who’s ready to play in the NHL in your AHL, right? It is a benefit. It is a a work of master GMsmanship to have guys that are ready to be called up when you need them. And you just hoped it wouldn’t be this early that you needed them, but if you do, great. That’s why they’re there. Yeah. And uh they got a guy who brings uh some sandpaper and Gavanni Smith that they can bring in as well. And uh I know there are some fans I saw some buzz like they they should call him up uh and just send him out there against Mo Ranton in first shift and and let him set the tone. I I’m not going to like say this for sure, but there’s a world where this group with dealing with the injuries is a edgier sandpaperier, tougher, whatever you want to call it team. LGO is a big dude. Yeah. And they’ve been playing a little grittier, too. AO had the hard shoulder check on uh on Jack Drury there late in the game, too. Just no no love lost there. What I loved about that and and and if you listen to the show often, thank you. You’re awesome MVP. Uh but you know, I I love angry Aaho. I and I call for angry I I I would if I were a teammate, I would insult Aaho on the ice. I would make up I’d have I’d have a friend make a blog for NHL news just to post fake articles about insulting Aaho so I could show him my phone be like to see what this this guy wrote. I love angry Aaho. Uh what I like about him checking Drury is it did seem like Jury was going after everybody that wasn’t his teammate last year on the Canes. He was attacking Hall. He was like he was getting physical with the guys he didn’t know and Aaho very much was like well those new guys are one of us right and and and was coming like I I really liked so much of what Aaho did obviously I’ve like darn near everything Jarvis has done this year uh I I saw the Canes posted a like I think it’s time we start the Seth Jarvis is a superstar conversation I was like start we’ve been having that conversation he’s been a superstar from the moment the puck dropped this season uh and he and showed signs of it last year and beyond that. But there’s a lot to like about the attitude of this team and I think if the physical stuff isn’t knockout blows, right? If if injuries don’t become seasonl long at crucial positions, if they if they miss time, let the Canes learn lessons and then come back, it could be in the end one of those blessings in disguise that seemed like, you know, a really bad deal when we were going through it and then looking back, you know, at the end of your journey saying, you know, that was actually a turning point for us. But you got to get there. And and I was saying I was just saying having this off air with a conversation with Paul Iander off air. I don’t care if they don’t win the Metro, right? I don’t care if if they don’t have what whatever seating you want. If they make the postseason, everybody is healthy at that point and the guys who had to play a ton when the the the health wasn’t there are are chomping at the bit to contribute. That’s the most important thing. And he was uh he was making a point too like if uh some of these guys especially on the back end are out for a while about going into the trade market and exploring that. I don’t know if they necessarily need to make that leap just yet. I think they have great organizational depth uh particularly on defense that they can bring in a guy like a LGO or bring in a a Joel Nestrom and you know obviously they’re not looking like veteran allstars out there but they looked comfortable enough that they were able to do their job and play that role and they ended up getting the win and uh who knows it may not even been that close if they were able to play with a full roster for the whole game. So, and two more things on that. One, it’s also it’s nice to know you have that club in your bag if you need it, right? If you need to go trade for somebody, you have the picks, you have prospects, you have cap space, it’s nice to know you can if you need to, and you hope you don’t need to. Uh, secondly, we haven’t mentioned this guy enough. I promise we will. Freddy was good. It was excellent. Freddy was good, and I’m underelling it. Yeah, it’s not that often you can say your goalie probably won you the game when you gave up four goals, but you can absolutely say that it’s the most shots he’s ever faced with the Canes. Most shots he’s ever saved with the Canes. Yep. And then he uh he was good in the shootout. Didn’t allow a goal in the shootout. And we we already talked about shootout. I Once it gets there, I’m expecting the worst. So, it was a pleasant surprise for them to to get it done. Freddy was good. I’m I’m with, by the way, if you watch the game and and listen to uh Mike and Trip or you listen to it here on 999 The Fan or the app, uh I’m with Trip. If he wants to wear the the old school pads for the rest of the year, they’re so clean. I would encourage it because he they played great, looked cool. Maybe that’s it. Look good, feel good, play good, right? That’s what Dion you say.

Tim Donnelly & Max Goren recap the Carolina Hurricanes’ crazy win in the shootout over the Colorado Avalanche, despite losing multiple roster regulars to injury.
