Chargers and Vikings are ‘opposites’, Should Minnesota be jealous of Los Angeles? | The Herd

So, um, I’m watching the Chargers last night play the Vikings. And, and my takeaway. By about the 3rd quarter, they’re actually opposites. The Chargers and the Vikings are opposites, and not just because they’re in different conferences. The Chargers love their quarterback. All they hope is that his teammates around him can occasionally stay healthy. But they know he’s the North Star. He’s the franchise, he is the bedrock for 15 years. He is worshiped in the building. The Vikings love all their players around the quarterback. But have no idea who’s gonna lead them in the next 10 years. They flirted with Aaron Rodgers, they settled for Carson Wentz. They had Daniel Jones in the building. They wanted to keep Donald but wouldn’t pay for him. So whatever’s happening with JJ McCarthy, the messaging is weird and he’s never available. So quarterbacks stabilize the franchise. So last night, the Chargers finally get Joe Alt back. What a, what a shocker. They can run on the left side. What a shocker. The blitz packages by the Vikings didn’t work. So the Vikings love their coach and their defensive coordinator and their left tackle and their weapons, and the Vikings love everything around the quarterback, but the, but the franchise has, it’s not stabilized because they don’t know what’s going on with JJ McCarthy. The Chargers are the opposite. They’ve got the most important part of this league. Quarterback 1, coach 2, and they’re both gonna be there for as long as they want to. Foreseeable future, decade if they want. Harbaugh may retire, 89, Jim’s got great energy. They just can’t keep anybody healthy for any extended period. So as I watched last night, 1000 out of 1000 times, I would take the Chargers situation. They’re making Justin Herbert throw more than any quarterback in the league because that’s what they have right now and slowly but surely, Joe Alt came back and they were good. But the Chargers know the truth in this league is that Joe Burrow got to a Super Bowl with a bad old line. Justin Herbert doesn’t need both tackles. He won’t have Slater this year. Just give him Joe Alt and they can blow out anybody at any time. Just to give you a sense, I’ve always said, once you get your head coach, quarterback’s the most important person, left tackle is next, then a pass rusher. Look at this. Joe Alt’s impact on the Chargers when he’s on the field. They’re 4-0 if he starts and finishes a game, and Herbert is a pro bowler. When he’s not, Herbert is OK and throwing 55 times a game with a passer rating in the 80s. So, quarterback, left tackle. Somebody to rush the passer and a weapon or two. It’s just that the Chargers have struggled outside of the quarterback and the coach to have anybody available on, on Thursdays or Sundays or Mondays. They did last night, and look how, look how easy it looks.

The Los Angeles Chargers beat the Minnesota Vikings 37-10 on Thursday night, led by Justin Herbert’s 3 TDs. Colin Cowherd discusses how the two teams are similar and different, and if the Vikings should be concerned with their QB situation.

  1. All true, but Colin may be overlooking how good Herbert's weaponry is in comparison to last season, when it was basically McConkey and nobody else. Keenan Allen is back and looking like he's 22 again. Quentin Johnston has figured it out. And Oronde Gadsden is looking like the steal of the draft.

  2. I know the Vikings went into this game with serious health problems with their offensive line, but it's hard to feel empathy for them after all the problems the Bolts have had. The Chargers have gone to two and even three tight end sets and added Matlock as a 300-pound fullback to help with the running game and protect Herbert. Playing more tight ends opened up an opportunity for Gadsden and he's looking more like a steal every week. They still have serious issues at right guard and right tackle, so I wonder about their ability to beat good teams like the Colts. They need to make some moves before the trade deadline if they want to go to the Super Bowl.

  3. I refuse to believe the Vikings are cursed, but this Franchise has arguably the worst misfortune at being any consistent playoff threat. Then anytime I see them make a playoff appearance, it either ends with a quick exit or a Heartbreaking loss in the NFC Title Game. On average the Vikings make the NFC Championship Game every 9-11 years. I’ve seen appearances in 1987, 98, 00, 09, and 17, so hopefully they’re due soon. We’ll see. 🤷🏽‍♂️
