Is Guenther offsides here on the Cole goal? Surprised this didn’t get reviewed

  1. It’s pretty damn close from this frame. Reminder too it has to be “definitive proof” to overturn the call on the ice.

  2. Skate might be barely touching the blue line. Considering how fast some teams are on most of those offside calls, the fact their isn’t a challenge strongly suggest that the skate was still on the Blue line but barely.

  3. Its blurry but I can’t confirm his skate isn’t still on the blue line when the puck crosses.

  4. Half a frame back when the puck leaves the blue line, I’d say Guenther was on side. Also I believe the rule was updated that a skate could be in the air over the blue line, not necessarily in contact with the ice, and be on side.

Edit: fixed autocorrect from “gram” to “frame”

  5. It’s so close I don’t think they would’ve been able to definitively say he was offsides

  6. In this freeze frame, the play is *DEFINITELY* onside. The puck and the player are both fully in the offensive zone. It doesn’t even matter if Guenther is touching the blue line because the puck is in the zone.

    >NHL Rule 83.1: Players of the attacking team must not precede the puck into the attacking zone.

Now, if a previous freeze frame shows any amount of the puck still touching the blue line and both of Guenther’s skates are fully in the offensive zone, *THEN* the play would be offside and the goal would most likely have been called back.

  7. At the bottom of the picture there is a camera on the blue line that the teams have access to and the coach can look at that view on the bench to possibly challenge for offside. Looking at the play by play, they decided not to challenge it as his skate was probably on the blue when the puck crossed as I don’t see a failed challenge delay of game penalty

  8. I thought in game and in the highlights he was offside, he may touch the line, maybe not, but I guess I just take it

  9. There’s no way this frame alone could prove it was offside because we don’t know how long the puck has been over the blue line.

  10. Andre talks all the time about how good our video coach crew is. Apparently not all teams are that good or fail to challenge when they have an opportunity.
