The Carolina Hurricanes Head to the Vegas Desert to Face the Golden Knights
The Carolina Hurricanes head into the Monday night game against the Vegas Golden Knights on a fivegame winning streak following their win over the weekend against the LA Kings. What can the Hurricanes really learn from the game and hopefully kind of carry that over and get their sixth straight win against the Golden Knights? Who are the players to watch as the, you know, team from the desert of Las Vegas are on a bit of a run themselves? And what are the keys of the game for the victory for the Hurricanes? Well, we’ll talk all about that here on a Monday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. You’re Locked on Hurricanes, your daily podcast on the Carolina Hurricane, part of the Locked On Network. I’m the credentialed Carolina hurricanes beat writer over at the hockey writers also the co-host of the searchcast which is a weekly Carolina hurricanes podcast along with all my duties here at locked on hurricanes like I said at the top of the show we are going to kind of reflect a little bit from the Saturday night game against the LA Kings came out of that and what can the Hurricanes learn to hopefully continue their winning streak against the Golden Knights. Speaking of the Gold Knights, who are kind of the players to watch as they have been on a winning streak of their own and they remain unbeaten in regulation, how can the Hurricanes kind of stand defeated and give them their potentially their first regulation loss or just beat them in general? And then what are going to be the keys to the game for the victory for the Hurricanes if they decide to keep this thing rolling? But before we jump into all of that, today’s episode is brought to you by FanDuel. Download the FanDuel app now by visiting fanduel.com and win $300 in bonus bets if your first $5 bet wins. Now for the Canes, obviously on Saturday night, we all know the Hurricanes won in overtime over the Kings 4 to3. Now this is a very weird and wonky game for sure for the fact that the Hurricanes at one point were up three to nothing. Of course, that was on the back of Jordan Stall scoring two goals in three minutes and 58 seconds, which was the fastest by one player for the Hurricanes. So, congrats to the captain for that. Plus, he did get goals number 3301. And then just Coke Y less than four minutes into the second period made it three nothing. However, the Kings did rattle off three unanswered goals between the rest of the second period and 11:02 into the third. Two forks overtime, but then thankfully they scraped out the win with a Seth Jarvis game-winning goal for his six of the season with AO getting a six assist and of course Kandre Miller Keandre Miller picking up his second assist of the season as well. Now, according to Walt Ruff, Seth Jarvis is the first AHL player in history to have four game-winning goals in the team in a team’s first five games of the season. So, elite company for Jarvis when you are a one of one to be able to pull that off, which is like I’ve always said recently, Jarvis is inevitable for the Carolina Hurricanes to get a win. And unfortunately in that game you do lose Shane Gossespare early you know during the first period doesn’t come back with a lower body injury and afterwards it was revealed and it was mentioned on Sunday by Ro Brendeore that he tweaked something. Now outside of that we don’t really know essentially what is going on with that. They had a you know practice on Sunday. No early update was given. So I’m guessing they’re still re-evaluating. They do have a morning skate on Monday at 11 a.m., you know, Pacific time or however you want to look at that. You know, it’s going to be basically, you know, early afternoon Eastern time is when they’re going to actually hold their practice. You know, with them being in Vegas at the time. So, whenever you guys do listen to this episode, maybe it is in the morning or maybe it’s sometime in the afternoon before the game. Hopefully, we’ll have an update at some point if Shane Gosspar will be ready to go for the Hurricanes. If not, they do have Charles Alexa go who they did call up before the road trip with Pierre Kachchuck of being out due to injury and the fact that Jacob Slavven also did not join the team on the trip. So, at that point, I wouldn’t be surprised if you hear some news of a potential seventh defenseman getting called up if you know Gossip Bear isn’t ready to go and they just need an extra defenseman just in case who that could be. Who really knows? Because the only guy who who I feel like was NHL ready right now is Legote. So, I don’t know where the Hurricanes go in terms of who could be a seventh defenseman or if they just feel like, okay, we’re just going to run with six. Hopefully Ghost is back at some point on the road trip because the fact that you got, you know, you got Vegas on Monday, you got the Avalanche later in the week on Thursday, and then you got Dallas on Saturday. So, only time will tell, but hopefully at least get an update at some point on Monday in the afternoon of what’s going on with Shane Goss. But that is a big blow to lose him because right now he’s been kind of one of the hottest defenseman for the Hurricanes in terms of goal scoring and defensively playing really well. It’s, you know, a really great start to the season for him. you know, unfortunately loses his four-game point streak due to having to leave the game early on Saturday, but the the team still did get the win, you know, and it was you kind of wish it didn’t have to go into overtime, but it’s just one of those things where the Kings were just being, you know, a team that kind of had the hurricanes number last season and, you know, the usual cast of guys of, you know, Kevin Fial scoring against the team and everything else like that because he always finds a way score against the Hurricanes on course you know Andre Kusmano gets a power play goal Trevor Mor love scoring against the Hurricanes as well so it was the usual guys but you know the Hurricanes did manage to hold on to get the win you know they did have 20 block shots which was good like I said unfortunately the only power play goal that the Kings scored was one for one so the PK went 0% of course the power play is unfortunately still struggling for the Hurricanes overall all. They’re trying, but it’s tough when you also lose one of your power play quarterbacks and it’s just you’re trying to figure out how to score. As of right now, the power play, like I said, we’ll talk about later on does need to get better. But thankfully that the team they’re facing, their PK isn’t the greatest. So, I said, we’ll talk about that later on in the show. But as of right now, what you can take away from Saturday’s game is is the fact that you can’t let if you’re up three nothing, you can’t let the other team get back into it. And there was a lot of not there were some pretty bad turnovers, you know, couple defensive lapses to let the go the, you know, let the Kings have some opportunities in your own zone finding, you know, leaving guys kind of open on the back door and you really could have put any of the goals against Brandon Busy. Now maybe the third one on the Kevin Fiala shot. You know, it was just a good shot. It just kind of got under his arm. I maybe that’s the only goal you would hope you would love to have back, but I wouldn’t even put that much on him because you could tell that the Kings were putting a lot of pressure on the Kings and it’s just finally broke at some point for them to get the tying goal. But he made a lot of huge saves and even like even the first goal of the game that you know on the Trevor Moore goal it was a drive by screen by Warren Fogle you know he didn’t even know the puck was there and then the second goal was a mad scramble right in front of the crease Kuzme was on the back door nothing honestly there was nothing really Brandon Blessing could do he did make a lot of big saves he’s now two for two in his career in terms of wins and you know they they pulled it out and got the dub But it’ll be interesting to see how the defense does because if you are out of Shane Gospare for that game against the Golden Knights, what do you look at? Do are you looking at Miller Walker and then is it going to be Nikesian Chatfield and then Riley Loat as your defensive pairings? I probably would see that. It it’ll be very interesting to see how it plays out cuz I think Lagot is going to be really good. It’s just that’s a tough ask for a guy to come in, you know, first game of the season for him with the Hurricanes actually dressed and you’re playing against a very hot Golden Knights team, but it’s next man up in tally for the Hurricanes and they have one without, you know, Jacob Slavven. It’s just now you got to play without, you know, one of your hottest defenseman right now to start the season. But, you know, if the Hurricanes, you know, can do what they’ve done so far and and people want to look at, okay, well, the records of the teams they faced weren’t really the greatest, you know, it’s, you know, when you look at the Flyers, you look at the Sharks, Ducks, and Kings, but it’s like in this league, anyone can beat anyone. And the Hurricanes went into Vegas last year after losing to Colorado in a heartbreaker and took care of business against the Golden Knights. So, they have done it before. they have gone against the odds as they say, you know, and beaten Vegas. So, it’ll be very interesting to see how that plays out. Now, that being said, who do the Hurricanes have to watch in terms of keeping these guys off the score she get the win on Monday night against the Golden Knights? Well, stick around. We’ll talk about it here in a second on a Monday edition of Locked Down Hurricanes. So, we know of the, you know, guys for the Carolina Hurricanes that have been playing really well. Seth Jarvis, eight points, leads the team, leads the team in six goals. Sebastian with six assists. Now, when you look at the Vegas Golden Knights, the guys that you really need to keep an eye on for how this game is really going to go is the fact that they have a three-handed monster right now that’s kind of in the way with some other guys that are helping out in the back end of things. But right now, a lot of people are talking about Jack Eel, who is on a, as they say, a heart run to start the season. Now, he does have five goals, 15 points, and is a plus four in the first six games, playing over 20 minutes, and has 30 shots already. So, that is a uh pretty strong start for Eel after getting that contract extension with them over the off season. and kind of helps why the Golden Knights have not lost in regulation yet. They are they are 40 and2 and that is kind of you know beneficial for the fact that you know your guy who leads the in basically right now in points with 15 in has five goals already in six games that is well over two points a game already. Now you go look at their schedule too they have beaten Calgary twice they’ve also beaten Boston, Seattle, San Jose and LA Kings. So, if people want to look at, well, who look at the who who have the Hurricanes played? Well, you could almost say the same thing for who the Golden Knights have played. Like I said, they did lose to the to the Kings in a shootout to start the season. Also beat San Jose in overtime, also lost to Seattle in overtime, and then they have won three straight with playing Calgary twice and also Boston. And they dismantled Boston pretty easily. So, it’s kind of you want to look at them be like, well, if you want to talk about the Hurricanes having an uh a interesting schedule to start the season, well, you can almost say the same thing for the Golden Knights, but they’ve lost to the Kings. So, the Kings really haven’t. So, that’s why the Hurricanes are 5-0 compared to the Golden Knights, who are 40 and2. Now, the other guy to look out for is Captain Mark Stone. two goals, 13 points, is a plus two, averaging right around 18 and a half minutes per game. Did leave, you know, relatively recently in one of the other games. It’ll be interesting to see how he is against the Hurricanes as well. But when you have two guys that are well over two points per game, it is very glaring to be like, okay, these are probably the two guys. If you’re the Hurricanes, you kind of want to keep them off the score sheet or limit them as very much as possible. Now, Eel doesn’t have a power play goal. He does have a game winner, but Mark Stone does have a power play goal and no game winners, but that’s something to keep an eye on when those two guys are a combined plus six, but they’re kind of not the guys that are getting the game winners necessarily, but they’re still making an impact enough where they have already 28 points combined in the first six games of the season. So, it helps if you’re the Hurricanes to kind of hold these two guys, you know, off the score sheet as much as possible because that might give you an opportunity because past that, you know, you do have, you know, four guys that have eight, seven, and two and a couple guys who have six points. Past that, it’s a lot of threes and ones and stuff like that. So, right now, it’s kind of I call Stonley in the way with Deoyv who’s another guy has four power play goals, which is out of his six for seven points. Another guy to keep an eye on or even Tomas Hurdle and Barbashev who both have six points each. But the one guy they really need to keep an eye on is the new guy on the block, Mitch Mner. Two goals, eight points, and he’s a plus seven for the Golden Knights. Does have a power play goal. No game winners yet, but he’s also averaging 21 and a half minutes per game for the Golden Knights. And that’s like that’s fourth on the entire team only behind Brandon McNab, Shay Theodore, and Noah Hannifan. And those guys are playing 21 and 37, 23 and 33, 33 seconds. And then, of course, Hannon 24 minutes. So Mner’s getting a bulk of the minutes. And yeah, while his, you know, it’s only two goals and eight points, that’s still well over a point per game right now for him. That’s, you know, when you look at DeFi, you have Hardle and Barbashev who are also at least a point bringing guys themselves. Mner is another guy to keep keep an eye on because he does have six assists so far and he’s a plus seven. So, he’s been on the ice a lot recently to, you know, see the team score some goals and get some points. Like I said, Deoyv does have four power play goals. Tomas Hurdle has two. So those are two other guys to keep an eye on because you know DeF like I said has a lot of power play goals which is out of his six he’s scoring on the power play a lot and Hurdle does have two power play goals out of his three and both of those guys are a combined plus 13. Now all that to be said you have to look at the goalending and I think this is where it’s probably you considered as a weakness for the Golden Knights in Hill is 10 and2. He does have a 2.86 86 goals against average. However, his save percentage is at 882. Then when you look at Akira Schmid, who the Hurricanes know very well because they’ve played really well against him in the playoffs over the last couple seasons and done pretty well for themselves. He is 3 and 0. However, he does have a three goals against average and his same percentage is 879, which is less than Aiden Hills, which gives you the indication that yeah, while they are 4-0 and two as a team and have gone unbeaten in regulation, it’s basically because of the fact that the the Golden Knights are a team that gives up three goals a game, but they also score 4.33 goals per game as well, which puts them second in goals four, but 16th in goals is allowed. Essentially saying that the goal Knights have to basically outshoot the other team and outscore them in a pretty big margin to win a game because right now their goalending, like I said, is three goals a game on average, which is basically dead middle of the league. But you do have the second best scoring unit in the NHL behind the Carolina Hurricanes. So, we’ll talk a little bit more in segment three about the keys of the game, but that’s a big indicator if you’re the Hurricanes, the fact that if you get to the goalending and kind of keep their big boys off the score sheet because outside your outside their top six guys who are a point per gamer or more, everyone else is three or less. So you’re the Gold Knights are having to rely on a very small handful of guys to basically out basically just have to shoot the lights out to get a win. And you know, like I said, people want to talk about what the Hurricane schedule look like. Well, the Golden Knights have played Calgary already twice, who some aren’t really considering an okay hockey team. You know, they’ve beaten the Sharks. They’ve beaten a Bruins team that have been really up and down this year. Yeah, they have lost to the Kings. They’ve lost to Seattle, but those are also two teams that are also somewhat struggling a little bit as well. So, you know, this is going to be an early measuring stick game for both of these teams because you’re looking at two teams who people are considering Staling Cup contenders. You know, Vegas out of the West. When you look at between them, Colorado, Dallas, who the Hurricanes have to face in the back half of this road trip is three cup contenders and Vegas is now playing the one of the hottest teams and the most and the only undefeated left in the Carolina Hurricane. So, it’s a big it’s a big weight title fight between these two teams and say, “Okay, where are we at to start the season?” Yeah, some people look at the early schedule saying, “Okay, well, who they’ve really played.” Now, it’s all right. Now it’s probably two of the best teams in the league starting this thing off early. Six games into the season at least for the Hurricanes, seventh game of the season for the Golden Knights. So that’s kind of what you’re looking at. You got to look at keeping Marner off the board along with Stone and Eel. And then, you know, if you limit them on their power plays, maybe you kind of get De Foy away from doing what he does best and scoring on the power play. Now that being said, what are the keys to the game for the Hurricanes to get a win against the Golden Knights and stay undefeated? Well, stick around. We’ll talk about it here in a second on a Monday edition of Locked on Hurricanes. The NFL season is here and Fandal has an offer you don’t want to miss. All right, so we kind of talk about the Hurricanes and kind of what they learned from playing the Kings on Saturday night and kind of what they have to rely on going into the game against the Golden Knights. And then we kind of talk about which Golden Knights players to watch if the Hurricanes want to get the win and stay undefeated. That all being said, what are the keys to the game for the Carolina Hurricanes to, like I said, stand defeated and go 6-0 to start the season and go 4-0 on the road trip. Now, I talked about a little bit goals for goals against Vegas Golden Knights are second in goals for 4.33, but they are 16th in goals allowed with three. On the flip side, the Carolina Hurricanes are the number one team in the league in scoring with 4.6 six after scoring four against the Kings on Saturday. And their goals against their goals against did go up from two to 2.20, but still fifth in the league. So, the Carolina Hurricanes as of right now are a team that’s pretty much shutting down a lot of the their opponents. Now, that said, if this goes into a special teams battle where, you know, DeF’s got four power play goals, Thomas Hurdle has two, Mark Stone’s got a power play. This is where it’s going to get very dicey. Now, thankfully the Carolina Hurricanes are at 86.7% which is eighth on the penalty kill. It did go down from the ‘9s after Saturday night because they only had one penalty, but Vegas scored or the Kings scored it pretty quickly thanks to Andre Kouseno. So, that’s kind of where yeah, you were fifth, now you’re eighth, but it’s one power play. What can you really do? You know, it’s just one of those things that happens. But the pill and kill has been pretty solid for the Carolina Hurricanes now with you know they I know they don’t use Gosh on the PK but with him gone some of their PK guys that they usually rely on are probably going to be used in different situations. So this will be very interesting to see how the PK does. The Gold Knights like I said you have to limit them 37 and a half% on the power play which is second in the NHL. If you can limit the penalties and you keep to foy and all the big boys off the off their opportunities, like you said, if you you gave the Kings one penalty, if you did it to the Golden Knights, I think you’re in a good spot because right now the Hurricanes are a very good five on five team where Vegas is a team that has to rely on a handful of guys to score goals, but right now their goalending isn’t really been the best. So, if you keep if you control the tempo and keep this as a 5v5 game, I think you’re in this good spot if you’re the Carolina Hurricanes because if you give the Golden Knights too many power play opportunities, they could potentially burn you. But your caveat is you are a top 10 penalty kill in the entire league. Now, if you take out Saturday’s game where you gave up one for one, technically the Hurricanes are the fifth best penalty kill in the entire league. So, you know, I think the Hurricanes are in a good spot at least on that side of things. Now, this is where it’s going to get very interesting. If the Hurricanes, well, they did get three power plays against the Kings and didn’t come up on it, especially when you had a five on three. This is where they might have a chance to kind of write the ship. The Golden Knights are 29th in the league on Pelicill at 66.7%. The Hurricanes are 29th in the power play with 11.8. They were 25th going into the game on Saturday against the Kings going 0 for three. Now you’re back in 29th. This is basically the battle of who struggling special team unit might hold out. Like I said, 29th on the power play for the Hurricanes, 29th on the pill to kill for the Golden Knights. If you’re the Hurricanes, you have to take advantage of here because you got a team that is, you know, shooting the lights out on their own power play and having to do so 5v5 and having to rely on just scoring a lot with a struggling goalie. If the Hurricanes want to get out of this rut of their power play, having two power play goals in the first five games of the season, getting doing it against Vegas might be very helpful for the Hurricanes if they want to secure a six straight win. If you at least get one power play goal, I think you you’re setting yourselves up really well if you’re the Canes to be able to pull that off. It’s just are you able to is the big question. So, only time will tell. But this kind of goes into the same point with special teams. If you go into a special teams battle, you’re going to have to limit your penalties to the Gold Knights to not give them more opportunities. And then if you’re the Hurricanes, you have to take advantage of yours because the Gold Knights are a struggling team on the PK. You don’t want to give them more opportunities to essentially, you know, give them more opportunities to blow the game out. You don’t want to do that. you want to be able to take advantage of your own while living to them as well. So, I think special teams will be a very huge game, but hopefully it’s one where the Hurricanes are going into having to kill more pelonies instead of playing five on five. Now, that said, this is a game where you’re going to have to play 60 minutes of Hurricanes hockey. You can’t have what happened on Saturday night where you’re up three goals, KK gets the thirds, you’re kind of feeling pretty good about yourselves, but then slowly as the game progresses, the Kings get back into it. You get Trevor Moore scoring from a, you know, essentially a shot from the left side near the blue line on a, you know, fly by screen of Warren Fogle or a lapse on letting Andre Kusbeno on the back door basically tap it into the goal and then defensively just keep letting the team surge and surge and surge until they finally put one on you and then you’re going into overtime because the Kings get back into it and then you have to rely on Seth Jarvis to basically have his, you know, magic to get you back into it. This is where the Hurricanes have to play a full 60 minutes. They cannot let the Golden Knights kind of work their way back into it. You got to control the tempo. You got to keep this thing five on five and you have to kind of get to the goalie early. And I think that’s goes into the third key point is the fact you got to get on them early. Both of these goalies aren’t really playing phenomenal right now. Yeah, Akira Schmid is three and 0, but he’s three goals against average and an 879 save percentage. It’s not like he’s, you know, stealing games for these guys. It’s just the fact that the Gold Knights are having to basically score, you know, four, five, six goals a game while letting in almost just as much or at least three or four, you know, to to get these wins. Yeah, they haven’t lost in regulation, but they’ve had to go to overtime twice where they’ve lost to Seattle and the LA Kings and the Kings game was in a shootout, but they also had to beat the Sharks in overtime. So, like their first three games were at least going into overtime or a shootout. Yeah, their last three have been in regulation wins, but it’s Calgary twice and Boston. You know, a lot of people look at those at those two teams being like, are they really good? But even Aiden Hill, he’s 10 and2. He’s lost both of those overtime games that you know or shoot game of the Golden Knights have been in. Yeah, his goals against is a 2.86, but his save percentage is 882. Still not really the strongest either where where you look at the Hurricanes. Anderson’s 3 and0 with a 227 and 8.99 save percentage. Of course, that’s because he’s not facing a lot of shots and letting a couple in, but that was very early on. Be like a Brandon Busy, you know, a 197 goals against in a 911 save percentage. He had one goal against in his win against the Sharks. Yeah, he gave up three against the Kings, but you can’t really put any of those three on him at that time, but he’s he’s still a sub two with the 911 save. So for the Hurricanes goalending, that’s a 904 save percentage as a team, but you’re 5-0. So the Hurricanes do have an edge in that. So, it’s just if you get to the goalie early, get the crowd out of it, and you limit the other team on their special teams opportunities to keep this thing five on five and don’t let them have to shoot the lights out to beat you, I think you’re going to get spotted for the Carolina Hurricanes where he could get the sixth win of the season. It’s just you’re going to have to probably rely on Shane Gosper if he’s not ready to go. And then you got, you know, really hunker down if you’re the defense. You know, we all know Tim Gleason can do that with his guys. It’s just can they do it? And for the Hurricanes, you know, it’s great that Seth Jarvis is scoring and he’s, you know, four game winners in the first five games. And you got Sebastah who’s over a point per game as well. You know, hopefully get Shane Goss back, but if not, you know, you got to hope that, you know, Nikolai Elers gets on the score sheet, but he’s been very close. I think he’s going to be able to get one eventually because he’s doing all the right things. It’s just it’s that triary assist that doesn’t count or he has those opportunities to score. It’s just the goalie’s playing out of his mind. you know, can Andre Fetchikov get rolling? That’s kind of the big question for him right now is can he get rolling? And then, you know, got to rely on, you know, Jackson Blake, Logan Stanov, and Taylor Hall, Eric Robinson, all those guys score goals, too. You’re looking at, you know, Kudger Miller, Alexander Nisha on the defense side of things to hopefully, you know, potentially get goals or at least get the setup as well. Then also look at goalending. Can the goalend keep up the way they have been so far? So, it’ll be very interesting. You’re looking at a undefeated Carolina Hurricanes team taking on a team in the Golden Knights who have not lost in regulation yet. They’ve are on a six-game point streak going into this game. So, it’ll be very interesting to see when you’re looking at two heavyweights on a Monday night to see who, you know, keeps their season rolling. you know, you know, are the Gold Knights going to lose their first regulation game or are they going to stay, you know, unbeaten and have a point streak still rolling and, you know, or can the Hurricanes keep their winning streak alive or at least, you know, keep a potential point streak alive as well if this goes into overtime. So, only time will tell, but it should be interesting. It’s Canes After Dark once again. It’s a 1000 p.m. start on Monday night. The Carolina Hurricanes head into the Nevada desert to take on the Vegas Golden Knights after defeating the LA Kings 4-3 in overtime on Saturday night. What can the Hurricanes learn from the game to hopefully beat the Golden Knights on Monday night? On the Monday Edition of Locked On Hurricanes, host Zach Martin starts the show by going over a little bit of the win over the Kings and how the team looks coming out of the game. What happens if Shayne Gostisbehere is not ready to go against the Knights? What could the line possibly look like? Secondly, Zach discusses which Golden Knights players the Hurricanes will need to stop if they look to collect their sixth straight win to start the season. Finally, Zach gives his keys to the game for the Hurricanes to win. Will special teams be a factor, and which guys will need to step up in a total team win? All of that, and more, on the latest episode of Locked On Hurricanes.
