Reaction: Winnipeg Jets lose to Seattle Kraken 3-0
[Music] Hello everyone and welcome into the WST postgame reaction. My name is Connor Rabjack joined today by Michael Remis and as you can see we are here at Canada Life Center breaking down the Jets three nothing loss to the Seattle Kraken and Ree I was saying to you before we started you know us being here doing it live on location makes it feel like playoffs but this game was hardly a playoff uh style game for the Winnipeg Jets as they lose three nothing. Yeah, the Winnipeg Jets coming in on a fivegame win streak and the Seattle Kraken coming in at the end of their six-game road trip. And you know, for the Winnipeg Jets, it looked at times, they were the ones at the end of the six-game road trip. Kyle Connor referenced in his postgame comments moving slow, didn’t have their feet moving. Jets had a push at the end. You thought maybe they would tie it up similar to how they tied it up in their last meeting here in Winnipeg in January, but it wasn’t the case. Joey Decord with the shut out in the Winnipeg Jets first loss in well there’s fivegame losing streak snapped. Yes. Yes. And uh coming into the game there was a question of whether or not Morgan Baron was going to play. He ended up playing and I thought actually was one of the better Jets on tonight’s game. We’ll get to that a little bit later on. We do have segments hardest working Jet and our standout stat of the game. So stay tuned for that. Um but what did you think was maybe the main reason the Jets lost this game and Seattle was so effective in shutting down the Jets? Remo felt like they, you know, for the first couple periods, a lot of shots from the outside. Yeah. You know, they had a couple chances. I’m thinking of the the crossbar one uh that went straight down and, you know, Gabe Valardi is just there a couple times just not strong on a stick and Seattle’s poking the puck away. Seattle was pretty good. They were pesky. Uh they played a little physical. Uh the Jets really didn’t have that push. They didn’t have that sense of urgency until the third period, I thought, and it was too little too late. Yeah, and that first period ended up 000, but that chance right as really time expired. Mark Shaley with a shot from the point, deflects off of Josh Morsian off the crossbar and Gabe Valardi, the puck is sitting there right there. He still hasn’t scored a goal this year and I’m not I’m not sure if there was a play on his stick and he kind of got tied up, but that would have been so nice and a great moment for the Jets uh topline right winger Gabe Valardi to get his first of the season, but he whiffs on it and Seattle clears that puck and really at the end of the of the game that play looms large because the Jets going up one- nothing. I thought they did a good job defensively on Seattle and Seattle obviously with two empty net goals. So that would have changed the trajectory of the game and Gabe Valardi still hunting for his first goal of the season. The power play tonight, Remo, um, also ineffective at times. You saw the second unit start one because the Shifley line drew the penalty. Um, what did you think of the power play? It’s been kind of up and down so far this season. The penalty kill has been elite. Um, do you have any worries about that unit, albeit without Cole Perfetti, but in this game a little ineffective and too many shots from the outside? Yeah, zero goals from Gabe Valardi. You know, what are we seven games into the season now? Not a total concern. I think he got off to a slow start last year, but you just saw the puck bouncing off his stick quite a bit. He didn’t have that touch in front of the net that we’ve seen. They’re still trying to figure out themselves on the power play since losing Nikolai Eers’s last year. And it’s funny, uh, you know, one positive you could take away from the Jets is penalties. We talked coming in about how they were taking too many. Uh really mo majority of this game being played at five on five, but the power play, yeah, they had trouble getting possession at times, couldn’t get set up, and credit to Seattle for, you know, neutralizing the Winnipeg Jets power play. So, wasn’t wasn’t their best game in that regard, Connor. Yeah, and the positive that you brought up there to take away. Scaril was asked about that after the game and said that it was their best game yet in terms of discipline and and that had been an issue. Yes, the penalty kill had been elite and Connor Hellbuck had bailed them out of some sticky situations, but not taking the penalties that we’re used to seeing the Jets take early in the season is definitely a step to improving that pen penalty kill even further and making it more sustainable going forward. So, I thought it was great like you mentioned the discipline. Um, I’m curious because I had in my notes here a few times in the first, second, and even the third period that I felt the Jets were generating, but every time I felt that you saw Connor and Shae and Valardi and Morsy on the ice and not really anyone else. What did you think of kind of the bottom nine forward core for the Jets in this game? Because I felt like when the top line was out there, they were generating, they were creating a little bit, and then when everyone else was out there, not much was happening. And that was my big concern for the Winnipeg Jets coming into this year. If you look at the top line, Mark Shaley, Kyle Connor, elite scorers among the NHL’s best uh in points and it was going to be a struggle without Cole Perfetti. uh you know moving on from Nicol Aers who was going to step up you know Jonathan Taves who hasn’t played in a couple years uh Nino need Rider Gus Nyquest you know not exactly you know top second line players here and you know they were able to get some wins early on and the last two games offense hasn’t really been there against a Calgary team you know that has had a really rough start to the season against a Seattle team as well so you know he didn’t see a lot out there Connor in terms of offensive a generation from those middle six lines. I saw a bit from uh Morgan Baron. I thought he had a pretty good game for a guy who was dayto-day and missed practice yesterday. We really didn’t hear what was going on with him. But I think that’s going to be a thing uh until they get Adam Lowry back until they get Cole Perfetti back. You know, who else is going to provide the offense on this team if it’s not going to be uh Connor and Shaley with Gabe Valardi on that top line? Yeah. And you know, the Jets will get another crack at the Calgary Flames tomorrow night coming off of a two-1 win. they had against them Monday. Calgary lost in overtime on Wednesday night to Montreal and they’re really struggling right now. So hopefully the Jets bottom nine can get going. I don’t want to just single out one player, but I do want to ask you specifically about Gustav Nyquist. This was a player signed to a one-year $3.25 million deal in the offseason. We’re through seven games now. Jonathan Taves has a goal. Nyquist doesn’t yet. Do you think there’s a little bit more upside there that we haven’t seen yet from Nyquist? Maybe. May maybe this is what it is. You’ve this is what is he’s an older player. I think on the power play you’ve seen the puck movement that he’s looked good but there wasn’t a whole lot from anyone. So it’s seven games. I’m willing to give it a couple more, but they lose Nikolai in the offseason and like you said, you know, the top line is coming back. Gustav Nquis was the one guy that they’ve signed him to a one-year contract and he kind of had that offensive upside two years removed from 75 points. We I just feel like we haven’t seen it yet. You know, the one thing they really missed on a night like tonight where as Kyle Connor said, the legs aren’t really moving. Like you saw Josh Morrisy be dynamic and be a top player. Kyle Connor, you know, had a lot of shots on goal tonight. Mark Strikeley as well. And I thought Morgan Baron brought energy on the fourth line, but who was bringing the energy in the middle lines? Who’s going to be that speedster when they get the puck can enter the zone? And you know, that’s what Nikolai Eer is providing. I don’t mean to harp on a guy who’s not on the team right anymore, but when they needed an offensive spark from someone, you know, was Brad Lambert going to be that player? Uh, I don’t think he provided that for them tonight. And as you said, the middle six is kind of just a bit it was a bit of a slo game, if I can use that term. Yes, I think you can. And I think it’s very accurate to what we saw tonight at Canada Life Center. You brought up Brad Lambert. Uh, he only played seven and a half minutes in the game against Calgary. He played more tonight. What did you think? I mean, again, really everyone outside of the top line I wasn’t very impressed with, but are you willing to give Lambert maybe another game this weekend with Calgary and Utah in town? I think I think so. You gave you gave the other guy Chibberov got a couple games and he you know didn’t really generate anything especially compared to you know he set such high expectations last year when he came into the lineup but there wasn’t much Parker Ford as well. You kind of know what kind of guy he is. Brad Lambert, maybe there’s some upside. May, you know, we saw the puck some flashes with some skating and maybe he needs some time to get used to the NHL game. But against Calgary, who hasn’t been very good this year. Mhm. Sure. Play play him again. And then maybe, you know, Utah, they scored more goals tonight than or Logan Culie scored tonight. Well, as many as as the Kraken did, so we’ll see what Utah is like on Sunday. M but yeah the you know I like is this a game that you just don’t want to evaluate or is this two games in a row for the Jets against lower teams like Calgary like the Kraken and they’re having trouble scoring goals? Yeah, that’s the thing for for me with the Winnipeg Jets to start this season that we knew they were going to be missing Perfetti Lowry and Samberg. I was almost willing to write off the first month of the season in terms of, you know, this team’s cup chances. Like, I don’t even think it’s worth evaluating right now what this team might be in May and April, right? Missing those guys. But at the same time, when you look at a guy like Nyquist, you look at Taves who’s coming along game by game, you look at Lambert and Chipperov and Ford who they might need to count on down the stretch, I think it’s worth talking about those guys in kind of a longer term picture, but it’s not really worth talking about, you know, taking this Seattle game and saying, “Oh, the Jets, they’re they’re they’re cooked because they they have these three very impact players coming back very soon.” the team that you’re watching now like most certainly is not going to be the team that you see after the trade deadline is not going to be the team that you see game one of the playoffs. So I think the goal for them is survive this start of the season and they did a great job maybe not playing at their best which they said but still going on this fivegame win streak. So, you know, they could had chances. You know, it does if that shot at the end of the second period goes in, right? It’s kind of a different game. Um, and you know, they just needed that one chance and Seattle got their chance, got a shot on net, big rebound, it be your man to the front and they were up one- nothing and they had the lead until, you know, the, you know, they had the lead for the whole game and the Jets tried to push. I thought they had a nice push at the third period. You felt like it was going to going to happen. Yeah. It didn’t. They pulled the goalie to try to get that extra attacker and it didn’t work out for them. Yeah. And I want to give credit to the Kraken as well. Scott O’Neal gave them credit. Same with Neil Pianc and Kyle Connor after the game. They were very physical on pucks. Their forche was all over it. And both Connor and Pian and even Arneal mentioned a lot of oneandds for the Jets offense. So they get a chance and the rebound would be there, but the Kraken would beat them to it. They would clear that puck. They would get the puck out of the zone. Uh, and you didn’t see that with the Jets allowing the Krakens one goal with Connor Hellbuck in the net in this game. The two empty netters came later, but the Kraken did a great job at kind of packing the house in, protecting the middle of the ice, and then when the Jets were shooting from the point, which they did a lot in this game, uh, there was no second chances, there were no rebounds, and ultimately that’s how you stifle the Winnipeg Jets offense. And that’s what they did on this night. And like I said, outside of the top line, I didn’t really feel uh that any of the other lines were particularly dangerous. I do want to talk about Josh Morsy. You mentioned him earlier. I asked Garder Neil after the game about Morsy and how he was kind of a catalyst for whatever kind of push that they did have in the third period. He was flying around out there. He played a team high 28 minutes and 13 seconds in this game and had four shots on goal. Neil Pian also had five shots on goal in just over 22 minutes of play. So, a lot of point shots, Remo. And when you hear Pianc, Connor, and Arneal all talk about the lack of second chances. Um, that’s really where it comes from. The Jets shooting from the point. Um, and looking for that rebound, but it just never came. Yeah. I don’t know if the puck was bouncing off their stick or not not in position. A lot of outside shots. Kyle Connor had a number of shots, but, you know, many of them from distance and there just weren’t the second chances. But Josh Morris, as you said, very, you know, look great tonight. Yeah. When he has the puck, he just makes, you know, a couple moves to make a defender miss and sets himself up for a nice pass. Didn’t result in a goal tonight. But, uh, it was a great game for Josh Morsy. I did see what Mike McIntyre note on X, formerly known as Twitter, that what team Canada GM Doug Armstrong in the building tonight. No, taking a look at Josh Moresy, probably Mark Shaley as well. Yes, probably. and and last year I remember Mark Shaley was not selected and then they played the Bruins shortly after. Their GM was the GM of Canada last year and uh yeah that was that was Mark Shiffley had a great game that night. Maybe not the same tonight. Josh Morrisy was fantastic. Mark Shyley like I said top line generated a ton but no goals for the Winnipeg Jets as they got shut out three nothing at home against the Seattle Kraken. Let’s get to our segments. Remis uh we’ve talked enough about this shutout game. Who’s your hardest working Jet from this game? This is kind of our hard hat award. unsung hero or it can be your player of the game. Whatever you want. Let us know in the comments down below who your hardest working jet of the game was. Remis, who was yours? Yeah, no doubt for me it was Morgan Baron. It seemed, you know, when they needed those bottom three lines to have some energy, he was bringing it all night playing the body. He was flying with this with his speed. Uh didn’t result in a goal. You know, they had some chances, but uh I really like Morgan Baron’s game tonight. So, he gets my hard hat for hardest working Jet. Nice. That’s a good pick. He was definitely on my short list. I’m going to go with Josh Morrisy. I just raved about him, how he was, you know, the Jets best player in that third period in terms of generating offense and getting shots through from the point. Like I said, four shots on goal for him over 28 minutes. He played a ton in this game. The kind of victim, if you will, of Morsy playing so much was Luke Shen. He only played nine minutes uh of of time on ice in this game. So Morsy getting double shifted, triple shifted in the third period. Um and it was great because he was skating smoothly, generating a ton, keeping pucks in, laying some big hits. He was doing it all for the Jets. So, I’m going to give Josh Morsy, my hardest working Jet, for tonight’s game, the loss to the Seattle Kraken. Do you have a standout stat of the game, Remo? Well, this isn’t a standout stat, but I we do have to mention I think the the loudest pop from the crowd of the game was when uh Big Stan Logan Stanley tow had that tow drag in the third period. Brought the crowd to its feet. You thought they were going to have a chance, you know, Pearson and Keepy making some nice plays to keep the puck in. That was the That was the loudest pop. Yes. Of the crowd. The big stand Danielle. As far as standout stats, I might have to pull my phone. I can go for mine. I’ll go I’ll go for mine. My standout stat of the game is nine combined shots for Neil Pian and Josh Morsy in this game. Morsy had four, Neil Pianc had five. And I think it really tells the story of this game. Uh I brought it up earlier, Scardell brought it up. So did Connor and Pianc after the game. There were no second chances for the Winnipeg Jets. And I asked Gardinil, you know, when there when that is what the other team is uh trying to accomplish, are you putting more of an emphasis on taking shots from the point? And he said, “Yeah, you’re you’re trying to get pucks through. You’re trying to get pucks to the middle of the ice, but they’re packing the house.” Uh and I thought Morsy and Pian did do a really good job of getting pucks through from the point. So, I’ll go with them. Nine combined shots, a lot of shots from the outside in this game for the Winnipeg Jets, but Seattle was making it tough. and I and Lane Lambert um head coach for the Seattle Kraken. Had his team ready to go with a good game plan on this night. So, a lot of shots from the outside, nine combined shots for Pianca Morsey, the two-time on ice leaders on defense for the Winnipeg Jets. That’s my standout stat of the game. I think it really tells the story of this one. What’s uh what do you got there, Remo? Sure. Uh you know, power play 0 for three. I could go with that. But how about this one? You know, we haven’t really talked about this guy all game. Connor Halbuck 25 saves on 26 shots against and the guy’s just been solid. He has all year. He’s been excellent. Uh he’s, you know, helped them, you know, number of their wins. You know what you’re getting back from. Zero concern. And how many teams in the NHL out there, you know, you hear have goalie concerns of flip-flopping goalies. You kind of set it and forget it here in Winnipeg. And uh you know, he signed for what is it? Seven more years at six more years. I think it kicked in last year. Six. So, six more with Shaley at this point. So, you’re not going to have to worry uh for a while if you’re a Jets fan. So, uh enjoy enjoy the Conor Hobbuck show while you can. He’s he’s pretty solid tonight. Yeah. And I I do echo that with Connor Hobbuk. Scott after the game said that the second period was maybe the worst for the Jets. He said that they felt as a team that they were too loose giving up too many chances in that period and this game could have really gotten out of hand if Connor Halib wasn’t Connor Halabuk doing what he does MVP level of play. He was named second star of the game. Joey Deord as well. 32 saves shut out for Seattle. Um we talk a lot about you know there being no second chances. A lot of the chances that the Jets did have he swallowed up and there were no rebounds. So and then when there was a rebound Seattle was able to clear it as well. So uh great game from the goalenders. Joey Accord is a you know younger and rising goalender in the NHL. Just signed a long-term extension with Seattle as well. Um so he he’s fun to watch. He’s having a great year so far. And Connor Halabuk doing what he does best. keeping the Jets in this one. He kept the Jets in the Calgary game as well long enough for them to come back in that one with the Taves goal and the Shely goal, but the Jets couldn’t muster up a goal for Connor Halabuck tonight. We’re expecting Eric Comry tomorrow when the Jets take on the Calgary Flames. Let’s transition to tomorrow. Remis, what will you be watching for as the Jets, who had their five-game winning streak snapped tonight, get right back at it right here at Canada Life Center. What are you watching for and what do the Jets need to do to get back in the win call? Yeah, I’m going back to Kyle Connor’s comments. I know Revan them a couple times, but he he talked about moving quicker, moving with speed, and trying to force those cross ice passes, and it just felt like they were slow, floating around at times. You want to see them get back uh to their, you know, fast-paced style of game, not just from that top line, uh from all the Lions. And uh Calgary, they lost in overtime on Wednesday to Montreal. hasn’t gone well for them to start uh the season, but there is a team also that has had trouble scoring goals as well. Dustin Wolf saying post game that, you know, he’s trying to stop all the Bucks. He he can’t play he can’t play offense. So, uh look, he’s had a great season last year. The Jets did beat Calgary earlier this week. I’m sure it’s going to be a bit of bit of a tougher test. Calgary, they’re pissed off. They keep losing. Yeah. But the Jets, I think playing with speed is going to be key for them. It just felt like felt like they were going for an afternoon jog at times. Yes. And and you used the word a slog earlier. That’s definitely it. It works though. It works for what this game just wasn’t. Maybe because the last time, you know, we did this standing here, we had the white towels everywhere. Uh this did not have that. No, it did not. Uh but I I will kind of agree with you on on tomorrow’s game in terms of Calgary’s what, one six-1 now, I believe, is their record if you want to double check that. Uh, I know they’ve only won one game so far, but this early in the season when a team is struggling that much and maybe had expectations of being a fringe playoff team, they’re going to come out hot uh and and looking to get back at the Winnipeg Jets who they the Calgary Flames felt they played a good game Monday night and the Jets stole one from them, scoring two goals late. They’re going to try and get back at them right here at Can Life Center. Again, expecting Eric Carry to start. We’ll see if there are any lineup changes for tomorrow, but I’m going to be watching the bottom nine. I brought it up earlier as a concern in this game in terms of not generating when the Sha Lands out there, you know that they’re going to generate offense. Who else in the bottom nine can get the offense rolling for the Winnipeg Jets and chip in some secondary scoring cuz I think they’ll need it. Maybe not against Calgary, but against the Utah Mammoths. So, this has been the WST postgame reaction. I’m Connor Rabchack. He’s Michael Remis. Thanks for watching. Hit the like button down below and we will see you tomorrow night after the Jets take on the Flames right here at Canada Life Center. [Music]

A few too many guys were in zombie mode until the third period. Daccord is elite. Kyle Connor was incredible tonight but his line mates were a little off.
