LFR19 – Game 8 – Shorthanded – Maple Leafs 3, Sabres 5

I cannot believe you are shooting a Leaf’s Sabers LFR in the middle of a Jay’s World Series game. It’s called Dedication, Man. Wow, that’s crazy. Anyway, intro’s done. I’m going to go watch the game. Have fun. Let’s go. It starts with an A and ends with exciting off the chart levels of this with you wherever you are. Welcome to LFO. [Applause] Leafs lose 5 to3 to the Buffalo Sabres. And I don’t even know the outcome of the World Series game yet. Here’s what’s crazy. Here’s what’s crazy. I brought this up in the podcast today. The World Series is going to be done in like, I don’t know, a week, week and a half. The Leafs play games during that time. They play another game tomorrow. I don’t know if anyone cares. How many of the people watching this video right now are getting their recap of the game from this video and never watched it? or you watched like the first period and then the game started. Anyway, the Leafs are going to play a bunch of games and then win or lose, the World Series will end. And my question is, when fans start paying attention after the World Series is won or lost, what will the Leafs look like? Are fans going to be like, “Wow, that was fun. They’re 38 and one.” I sincerely hope not, but tonight was bad and got better and got worse. Let’s talk about it. But first, hey, hey, Easter Seals. I’m trying to raise money for Easter Seals. That’s a charity that helps out kids with physical disabilities. I promise I’m going to stop asking you for money soon. The link to donate is in the description down below. My team is Rachel’s Raiders, and we are currently in second place. The reason I have that little Stanley Cup back there, that’s actually the top fundraiser trophy, and Rachel’s Raiders keeps winning it. Right now, we’re running out of time. The cuto off for donations is the evening of November 6th, Thursday, November 6th. That is very soon. And we’re about $3,000 behind. Anyone who donates to anybody on Rachel’s Raiders is automatically entered to win a pair of tickets to Leaf’s sends December 27th. Any dollar amount. Just donate. And I’m going to ask it. You don’t have to donate to me. I’d be happy if you donated to anybody on Rachel’s Raiders cuz there’s a lot of people who are trying to reach the $1,000 threshold. We’re all trying to hit a,000 bucks. So, if you can donate, great. Link in the description down below. I promise I’ll stop asking you soon, but not yet. Okay, how to talk about that game. Leafs have a backto-back against the Buffalo Sabres, and it’s a mess. The start time of both games got changed because of the World Series. This game got moved up I think half an hour and then tomorrow’s hockey night in Canada game is at 5 because apparently there is a huge difference between the World Series and the ninth regular season game for the Leafs. The Leafs head into this game reeling. They’re not playing well and they’re not winning. And they head into this game without Chris Taniff. We knew that. Without Morgan Riley, we didn’t know that. And by the end of the game without William Knander, buddy, they are in one. On Saturday, I was screaming at the team and I I don’t maybe I shouldn’t have maybe it shouldn’t have gone that hard cuz that those were the frustrated rants of a man who thought the team was capable of better. Watching them over the last three games, I don’t I don’t know. I don’t know if they’re capable of better. I’m no longer in frustrated, angry, screaming mode. I am wholeheartedly 10 toes in problemsolving mode because this team’s got a problem. Now, their defense was absolutely abysmal in this game. And you lose Tan if you lose Riley. And Meyers and Mermis get into their first NHL games of the season. Yeah, that makes sense. Mermis, who is a player I like, was awful. I mean, he was Who was good? The correct answer is Oliver Ecman Larson was good. But their whole decor had a really rough night. There were some nice moments. Jake McCabe for the full twominute five on three kill. That was awesome. Started to get a little physical at times. That was awesome. The pace of the start of the game awesome. The amount of goals the Leafs allowed not awesome. It went Sabres goal. Oh no. Knander breakaway goal. Lol. Sabres goal immediately. Matthews gets a power play goal from the Matthews spot. A horrible angle, a dry sidelike terrible angle and he buries it old school. That was chicken soup for the Leaf fan soul. I felt so much better after seeing that he could still do that. But gaff after gaff after gaff on the defensive end and the team was playing on their back foot. Dakota Joshua ends up getting his first as a leaf late in the game. Nick Wah with a great effort there. Eston Cowan helping out. He was on that line. They get a late power play, but they blow it at the blue line and Tuck very short-handed. It’s not enough. That’s the Kohl’s notes. I I want to break down a couple of the storylines that I’m seeing. One, people complaining about the defense. Yeah, it was absolutely abysmal. And people complaining about Anthony Stallers. I will say this, Stallers called the team out, and I thought he was perfectly justified in calling the team out. Boy, the Leafs have not held up their end of the bargain since getting called out. They haven’t protected his crease. They haven’t protected their goalie. They haven’t protected each other. They don’t play like they like each other, but you need to stand on your head if you’re going to do that sort of thing. And Sters hasn’t. So, is this his fault? Well, you tell me. Goal number one, just less than 5 minutes in, Matias Samson is the most wide open any person has ever been. Eastston Cowan panicking. Oh, no. No, no. Yep. Too late. His first of the season. Sabres score. Knander, mere seconds later, makes it 1-1. Yes. A minute later, here come the Sabres. This is a threeon two and the Leafs gave up a bunch of these. And just Why are you watching the puck? Here is a clinic in puck watching. Paige Thompson has it. He has two options. Where’s he going? Ah, he goes to the far side. Okay. Ah, he goes to the far side. Okay. Look where everyone is looking. Look where everyone is looking. They’re all puck watching and ignoring the attacker soaring by them. And oh, there he is. There he is. And he’s got the puck and no one on him. Yuri Kulick scores his third of the season. Sabres have the lead again. Matthews ties it on the power play. It’s a power play goal. It’s a Matthews goal. We feel really good about that. And in the second period, the puck watching clinic continues. Once again, a threeon two. Stop doing it. I hate it. It’s Tage Thompson with the puck. Tage Thompson hands it off and everyone’s watching the puck and not Tage Thompson. He had over 40 goals last year. Are you nuts? He gets the puck with time and space. Ew, gross. Yuck. Rips it. Sabres goal. I don’t think I’ve mentioned Anthony Stler’s name yet. Whoops. Once again, the Sabres, they’re in the Leaf zone. And oh, when the Leafs got hemmed in, they were there to stay. I love Steven Lurren. Whenever you criticize Steven Lorent, I feel like you have to qualify it with you love him because you never criticize Steven Lorren, right? He’s great. He’s the He’s passion. Ew, boo. No. Matias is left alone at the point. This man walks in after getting the puck. There’s a screen in front like ew. Ew. Across the board. Ew. And he snipes his second of the season. I didn’t know Matias Samson got multi-goal games. And dude, that’s the eventual game winner here. Just just for fun. You want to see the fifth goal? It’s a bloody short-handed breakaway from Alex Tuck who wants $25 million a year. So, this might fall under you’d like a save territory. Like, okay, I know the Leafs are making a lot of mistakes. Can you make a save? Maybe. Maybe. But dude, the team in front of Stallers was awful. And I notice I said team because, and I almost did this, I almost got caught in the trap of blaming the Dor and blaming the new guys who I didn’t think had a good game, but oh, they don’t have Tanv. Oh, they don’t have Riley. That’s why the D was bad. For the two threeon twos that I showed you, both Dmen are back. Who left Samuelson alone on his first goal? A forward. Who left Samuelson alone on a second goal? A forward. I mean, it was Oel flubbing it on the power play there at the end, but like he had a really good game. The pass to Knander for the breakaway was stupid. Oel’s having such a throwback year. He looks miles better than he did last year. And now all of a sudden, he might become one of their most important pieces because everyone’s hurt. Machelli had an unreal chance to tie it. Knander leaves the game late. We have no idea what his fate is and they play tomorrow. Everything every single thing is bad news right now for the Leafs. The only silver lining, Joseph Wool is coming back soon. That people kept asking me like I know something. I I got to tell you something. No one knew anything. It was also one of those things where you don’t try to find out. Wool was away from the team. We don’t need to know why. All we need to know is that he was away from the team. But I did start to wonder, especially with Stallers getting increasingly frustrated, when’s he coming back, though? Well, he’s rejoining the team. He’s going to resume practices. He’s going to be on the ice, and that means that games can’t be in the tooistant future, you would think. I was getting really worried about that. I’m super happy to hear he’s back. We could use good news uh in Leafland right now. Blue Jay Land is a different land, by the way. That’s We’re cool there. A few things. Cowan giveth. Cowan taketh away. All in all, a a wash. I’d like to see him continue to be in the lineup. Nick Wah, that’s the most comfortable he’s looked as a Leaf. Dakota Joshua, that’s the most comfortable he’s looked as a Leaf. Fourth line, yuck. Hate it. Hate every part of it. Yuck. No. Max Doi is approaching healthy scratch territory. It’s bad. He’s not generating offense. He’s not hitting. He’s not fighting. He’s not He’s getting hemmed in every time he’s on the ice. Michelli didn’t have a very good game, but he he did have a scoring chance. Like, okay, the positives. Matthews, that’s the best he’s looked in a few games. Knander looked unbelievable until he got freaking hurt. N looked fine. Uh uh, who else? Oh, Tvaris has been solid as a rock. That was a game where the big guy showed up. But the team at large, they had this coach last year. They’re acting like they never played hockey before. We talked about this on the podcast. Lane Lambert was their defensive coach and PK coach last year. He’s now the head coach in Seattle. Holy cow. Sure looks like they miss him. Derek Leand is now the coach back there. Uh he did a great job when he was an assistant with Tampa. He was then the head coach at Detroit and was awful. But when he was an assistant coach, which is the job he’s doing here, he was great. Here’s the thing. Everyone’s saying it’s early, it’s early, it’s early. And they pointed to other teams and their poor records. like a team like Dallas, who you would never expect to be bad. They’re kind of mediocre, dude. I don’t care what their record is. I don’t I mean, I want them to be undefeated, okay? But I haven’t mentioned their record once, I don’t think. What’s their record off the top of your head? What’s their record? I know it. I didn’t say it, though. What I’m concerned about isn’t the results. It’s they look real bad. Even when there are things to be positive about, they look bad. And they got to fix those things through injuries and everything. Tootssweet because that schedule stops for no one. Questions. What’s the best seasonal dessert pie? I don’t want to talk about this team right now. Yeah, there there were a lot of uh non-leaf questions when I asked for LFR questions. I used to be exclusively a pumpkin pie guy. I love pumpkin pie. I know that’s very controversial because a lot of people don’t like pumpkin pie. Later in life, as I age, really like old school apple pie. Just a really I like a gooey apple pie, but I like to know that there’s apples in it. Um, I was going to say key lime pie. No, no, lemon meringue is what I was gonna say. I confuse the two sometimes. Lemon meringue, but that’s not really seasonal, so I’m gonna say apple pie. How do you feel about the construction in Toronto? So yo, uh, we had this thing where you could work from home and then a bunch of companies in the government were like, “Let’s not do that anymore.” And I started driving uh to the show in Toronto. I started driving from the suburbs into Toronto. Um, after they made that decision and I just got to say to everyone who made that decision, I hate you from the bottom of my heart. Step on a Lego, you suck. It’s oh my god, it got so much worse. I can tell you from before CO to when CO hit, the only silver lining was there wasn’t any traffic. But even when things started opening up and everything started opening up, it wasn’t as bad as it used to be because it didn’t need to be. You notice this, this has nothing to do with construction. There’s always construction. Construction is an inevitability. It’s something that needs to be done. Ending work from home did not need to be done. And I can tell you with certainty, oh my god, the Jay just hit a grand slam. Who was it? Oh my god, I got to wrap this up. Drive better. That is it for this one. Thank you very much for watching. 1. One thing about Max Domi that I'm surprised people have not started talking about is his career history. Weirdly looking at his year by year stats for a majority of his career his best seasons have been when he is playing his first season for a new team. After that first season his numbers start to fall off, whether it was Arizona, Montreal, and now Toronto. Some coaches get a reputation for being a short term coach, maybe Domi is a short term player in this league.

  2. They ran Marner out of town, he had no choice but to leave. Hand,Ed poorly as per the usual managing of this team. Marner set up 85% of Marner goals, was the best penalty killer, choreographed the power play and on and on. I think Berube’s managing style is not working. These players are not tough and some aren’t even good enough to be on the fourth line. They are beginning to show just how “slow” they are compared to other young, exciting teams. Montreal are exciting to watch with you young, talented, fast platers. Their coach is terrific and very encouraging. They play by his example and never give up. I have never been a fan of Montreal but I enjoy watching the young guys improving week by week and cannot watch Leafs. I recorded the game last night and watch Blue Jays but then looked at replays of Leafs……same old, same old……they stink.

  3. These videos remind me that even as a tampa fan with a poor start to the season and a bleak future i gotta remember since Steve started this tampa went to 7 conference finals, 4 finals, and 2 cups. Attest they got it done when they could.

  4. OEL was good? How? They were down by 1 and on the PP and he with tons of time he passes it right to them for a breakaway that ruined the chance of coming back

  5. Legitimately they were outplayed every single game last year and won because they had stupid talent

It was a coaching problem, it is a coaching problem, this team needs to be more aggressive with "oh this doesnt work, lets try something else" not slam its head into a wall for a decade and expect the wall to break

  6. Literally dried my hands to type this from the shower. Grape pie. Once this whole Trump thing is over would love to have you in Sunny Western NY for a slice of Finger Lakes Grape Pie.

  7. Stop talking about Lambert and how much you miss him. He is our coach now. LL is the hard ass the Kraken players have needed for 2 years. Youre not GETTING HIM BACK!!!

  8. People are surprised Max Domi is not very good? Isn't the fact that you would have to ask seven other teams for a confirmation sort of a sign?

  9. That Short Handed goal at the end was just the dagger in the back to Leaf fans.
Clearly there is a problem in attitude since that Stolarz outburst.
This team has 0 heart and 0 efofrt or care.
That play by OEL looked like he wanted to do that and didn't even care what happened.
Then add to that the back check of Maccelli was just embarrassing.
If Maccelli steps on the ice again I refuse to watch TOR lose anymore.

  10. Also, about the traffic: thank all the middle managers who were being exposed for being useless as the cause for returning to the office.

Now they get to look over the cubicle wall and ask "everything all right buddy?" and cash in their paycheck.

  11. I do love how your fans wanted to softball you and ask non-Leafs related questions for the video. ^_^
And I see it all the time with sports teams: one team in the city usually has to sap life from another to bolster their success. The Bluejays needed some of the Mapleleafs' mana for this run they're on, it looks like.

  12. Getting to the traffic problem. These guys had from 2019 to now (trust me they knew that they wanted people back in the offices the entire time) to build effective public transit and THEY BUILT NOTHING. Stop giving rich people our tax money so they can build castles (fuck Loblaws) and spend it on infrastructure/services.

  13. Honestly, I'm tired at this point. I've been watching the Leafs since the early 70s. Some of my earliest memories are in front of the TV watching them play, or at Maple Leaf Gardens. I'm sick of this shit. Every year the same. A few highlights – a few Gilmour years, a few Sundin years… – but just incoherent crap otherwise. I'm a few bad months of hockey away from throwing in the towel. It's beyond stupid to cheer for this team at this point. Show it or shut up.

  14. Leafs are killing me this year. Got mathews and Nylander in fantasy and they just lost me 150$ In a 5 leg parlay last night.. everything else hit and then the idiot sticks lost 5-3 against fricken buffalo.. what a joke bro

  15. Hey leafs fan are you still happy? You pushed out Marner off the team?
I still think it’s hilarious. You guys constantly complained about a 90 point plus player a year who basically did everything.
And oh yeah, didn’t he lead your team in points in playoffs yet? You said he didn’t do anything in pivotal games enjoy not making the playoffs.

  16. Leafs sucks so much. I predict a first elimination in 7 games. I guarantee that this will happen. I have a been a Habs fan since 1975. I remember the dynasty of the 70s, the 86 cup and 93 win. I remember seeing Guy Lafleur walking down Ste Catherine Street and we all yell "Guy!!!". At least Toronto has a true champion team – the Jays. They have heart and talent. Leafs will not see a cup in at least 25 more years.

  17. You guys are the delusional fans who thought you could lose Marner and it would be better for the team LOL

This is why in 5 years, you won't be on the Stanley Cup anymore lol
