Went to a game in San Francisco in 2008 and saw him playing for the Phillies.
Hell yeah, my sibling in Fredbird
I love it!
I still remember the game in Chicago (had to look it up: July 20, 2004). Pujols hit 3 HR, then late in the game, So Taguchi hit a HR. Team was going wild. I always loved have Taguchi on the team.
Hell yeah one of my favorite memories of going to a game is getting him to say hello as he walked into the dugout in Autozone Park
Very cool!
Interesting that it’s not also signed in Japanese.
When I was younger (like 12-14), my parents worked for Anheuser Busch, and the company did a family day at the ballpark where employees and their kids could meet players and get autographs.
My sister (who was like 8-10) loved So, so she and my mom waited in line for his autograph. He signed her baseball in English and Japanese! Maybe he stopped doing that at some point. I’ll have to have my sister find that ball.

I was given a work assignment in 2006 that took me to Manila for two and a half months. When I left in August, the Cardinals were not in contention, but I still packed a Cardinals cap. Once in PHI, I mirrored East Coast hours and worked from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM. When the Cardinals made the playoffs, I watched the NLCS on a feed from Taiwan with Taiwanese announcers in the morning after work. When the Cardinals made the WS, another local station in Manila added the WS coverage on CBS, but the station that had the Taiwanese feed during the NLCS switched to a feed from Japan with Japanese announcers.
I switched back and forth between the stations. The Japanese station chose different camera shots, including anything that showed So Taguchi in the dugout. Even though I didn’t understand Japanese, it was obvious that the announcers sounded much more excited when So was shown. I was absolutely floored when the announcers saved their loudest and most excited commentary when the camera caught So adjusting his cup.
The return flight back home had a stopover in Narita, so I had arranged for PTO in Japan for two and a half weeks in Japan after the work assignment. I had heard that foreigners were generally ignored in public, but I received a steady stream of comments and well wishes from random folks in the crowd who yelled “St. Louis Cardinals, World Champions!” Or just “So Taguchi!” When I wore the cap.
